One Year Of The Newcastle United Blog

April 23rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 76 Comments

Today marks the first year anniversary of The Newcastle United Blog.

nufc-crest.png

For those of you who were readers back then, our first banner looked like this:

nufcblog-header.jpg

Yes, we know Alan Shearer is shown and he had already retired - but Michael was at least in there.

It’s interesting to note everything that’s happened at Newcastle United, since our site went live last April 23rd:

  • Glenn Roeder sacked as manager - 6th May, 2007
  • Sam Allardyce appointed manager - 15th May, 2007
  • Mike Ashley buys Newcastle United for about £133M - June, 2007
  • Chairman Freddy Shepherd resigns, Chris Mort takes over - 24th July, 2007
  • Newcastle lose to Derby 1-0 at Pride Park in a hopeless performance – and is the only win so far for relegated Derby - 17th September, 2007
  • Sam Allardyce sacked - 9th January, 2008
  • Kevin Keegan appointed Newcastle United Manager - 16th January, 2008
  • Mort appoints recruitment team of Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere - 28th January, 2008
  • Kevin gets first win after 10 games against Fulham - 22nd March, 2008
  • Newcastle beat Sunderland 2-0 – get 14 points from an unbeaten 6 game run - 20th April, 2008

And some stats on the site over the last year:

We just went over 4M hits last Monday.

We’ve published 2884 stories (posts) in the last year, and have received 79,008 comments from our readers on these stories. That’s an average of about 27 comments per article.

Our goal for the site is to expand and extend the support of Newcastle United throughout the world, and allow our supporters to comment and offer their opinions on the various stories of the day, associated with Newcastle United Football Club.

We just know that with Kevin Keegan back and a Billionaire English owner of the club, the times ahead for Newcastle are going to be great again, and we plan to follow that success every step of the way.

Thanks for your support over this last year - it’s been truly appreciated.

Upward and onward.

Ed Harrison.

Thanks for all your hard work Ed.

Been a tumultuous year for the club and I’m sure we’ve all really enjoyed your work in covering it!

    Keep up the good work!

  • 2 Toon_Ksk // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:17

    Congratulations. More good years ahead.

  • 3 Chris F // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:17

    Congrats Ed.

lets hope our fortunes continue to improve along with your hit count ;)

  • 4 Tom_Toon // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:18

    Ditto

  • 5 sparetheman // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:18

I suppose we can excuse this little piece of self-indulgence just this once, Ed. Nice job on somehow managing to write 2884 different articles on the Toon! Keep it up.

  • 6 Toon_Ksk // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:19

I think it will be good to have a forum with specific topics instead of having of us all flooding here. Just a suggestion :)

  • 7 Dr O'Style // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:19

Thanks for all your efforts Ed. Greatly appreciated.

Always enjoy coming to such a dedicated and friendly site to get all the news on the club. Been a tumultuous year and your work has been highly appreciated by many!

  • 8 Tom_Toon // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:22

Nah, this way is best. Not confusing and jumbled like many a forum.

  • 9 M. Stockley // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:24

good work ed. this holds crown for being the most addictive website along with nufc.co.uk and facebook.

  • 10 ObaFan2 // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:42

Congratulations Ed, one of the finest reads on the internet.

  • 11 Ian // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:44

As a Californian who was introduced to the EPL only two years ago, I must say this website has been invaluable in following Newcastle, a great club to support. Thank you, Ed.

  • 12 Jim // Apr 23, 2008 at 1:52

A staple site for all the latest (almost unbiased) editorials collected from the 4 corners of the web on one clean and accessible site.

    Happy birthday Ed!
    Fantastic!

  • 13 Dingo // Apr 23, 2008 at 2:15

Thanks for all your hard work Ed.

btw… I am now living in LA and working with LA Galaxy. If you are about this neck of the woods give me a shout.

  • 14 adam // Apr 23, 2008 at 2:18

congrats ed. your running a great website. its the main one i use.

seems like an army of workers is helping you. how many are there?

  • 15 Gloryhunter // Apr 23, 2008 at 2:25

Well done Ed. Bet you never imagined it would get this big (oo err missus).

  • 16 Gloryhunter // Apr 23, 2008 at 2:27

Ed. I live in Benwell. If you’re ever passing …. best to keep on passing :)

  • 17 Tripp // Apr 23, 2008 at 3:26

Well done Ed. It’s a smashing site and the first thing I do when I get to work in the morning is check in to see what’s new with the Toon. I rarely hit the other NUFC websites anymore because this one’s the best. Kudos not only to you, but to all the lads and lasses that comment on the articles. As far as web communities go this one is really solid. The vast majority of the comments are intelligent, even if we don’t all see eye to eye about our beloved club it’s a great place to share the passion for football, and in particular NUFC. Here’s to the next year and 6 million site visits! Can’t wait for the xfer season, it’s gonna be crackin’. Cheers again to all who put in their 2 pence and cheers to you Ed for all of the sweat and tears (and this season there have been plenty) you pour into this blog.

  • 18 Tripp // Apr 23, 2008 at 3:28

Oh, and Ed, if you’re ever passing through Denver, do drop me a note. Must be a little nicer than Benwell. ;)

  • 19 Spyro // Apr 23, 2008 at 4:16

congratulations Ed, Tripp and everyone else summed it up really, so i will leave it at that

  • 20 Callum // Apr 23, 2008 at 4:18

    Congratulations :D

  • 21 51times // Apr 23, 2008 at 4:32

Congratulations, here’s to another year of success!

  • 22 obamagic // Apr 23, 2008 at 4:37

Congrats! Great site! However, I think the comments section needs upgrading. I mean when you reply to someone’s comment, it should appear right underneath the comment that its addressing. Instead of saying @So and so

  • 23 Tripp // Apr 23, 2008 at 5:08

Obamagic, that’s the nature of a blog. It’s not a message board, though Ed, if you’re feeling up to it, I’d like to see something like that added. You used to have it but, alas, that went away when the rift with Ahmed happened. Each format has its pros and cons. The blog is great for what it does, but sometimes there are things that are better served by a message board. Whatever. Still a crackin’ site and cheers Spyro. ;)

  • 24 Spot The Zebra // Apr 23, 2008 at 5:31

    Congratulations Ed and thank you.

  • 25 Spot The Zebra // Apr 23, 2008 at 5:58

By the way Ed i think your blog format is fine the way it is and its format is what sets this website apart from the many NUFC forums on the web.
If anything may i suggest posters should have to register? This way names cant be taken by mischeivious imposters. It also means we could use a password instead of having to type in our e-mail address each time.

  • 26 Cyprus Mag // Apr 23, 2008 at 6:19

Enquan Des Aleh Ed. I have been out for some time, but i am happy this time has coincided with the fantastic performance the team is performing these recent weeks. And i am wandering what everything will look like the very next year.

    Keep up the good work!

  • 34 Vitorbarbosa // Apr 23, 2008 at 8:02

I don’t know if this is the best, but it didn’t seem like a newly created blog when I visited here last summer. I do not even look for other blog after I found yours, and yours is the first NUFC blog I read and there is no need for me to look for another.

I like it due to your articles very up-to-date, covering every little single area related to NUFC and of course, because you are one of us.

I like your comments very much, you are just like me, always see the positives things in NUFC.

Sometimes, when things goes wrong, or people criticize our players, you still praise them good, excellent and I must say, I agree to your remarks than the critics.

Keep up the good work. I believe we will have more traffics once the window starts.

  • 35 Nick Dryden // Apr 23, 2008 at 8:14

Great effort Ed. Long may it continue. I haven’t agreed with some of what you’ve said, but hey I guess that’s the point off a forum - some of us who think they are right and some of us who know we are!!! One thing though Ed, please no more talk of RIISE!!!!

  • 36 staffsmag // Apr 23, 2008 at 8:18

Congratulations Ed - only recently discovered the site but really enjoy it - long may it continue

A big thanks to you Ed and all those contributors who have made this site what it is today - I stumbled across this site quite by chance and look in on it daily - long may it’s positive and negative energies continue.

BTW just as an aside I hear Liverpool are trying to get rid of a left back on the cheap, apparently he’s good in the box at corners, just not necessarily into the right net ;)

I think I’ve been here since the start: crikey! I always thought the site had been around for longer than that. Anyway, congratulations on the one-year anniversary and long may it continue: this place has become essential Newcastle-related reading, and compliments NUFC.com rather well. You two should try to strike up some sort of contact. ;)

Happy 1st Anniversary Ed and many congratulations for all your hard work in producing this site. I love your positivity. My joint favourite site along with .com. Keep up the good work and I look forward to another year of even better Blogs.

I have also got quite fond of my fellow Geordie reprobates who are regular contributors.

Changing the subject slightly, can you not get hold of some footage of the prematch Blaydon Races prior to the mackem’s match? It was sensational, and for those who were not lucky enough to be in SJP it would be something to savour.

The “we” is the Royal “we” - the blog is just me - no helpers - but wouldn’t have it any other way.
We tried a forum for comments - and it just didn’t work.
Most readers - if they want to comment on something - go to the latest article. It works quite well - but nothing is perfect.

  • 74 Alan // Apr 23, 2008 at 17:48

As an ex-pat Geordie living in LA this has become my first port-of-call for info. on my greatest passion; NUFC.

Thanks for all your hard work and congratulations.
