Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has talked about Newcastle United in some glowing terms today.

Luka Modric - can Newcastle close the deal?
Newcastle United are trying to sign Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Luka Modric, although the Evening Chronicle today suggest the fee has still not been agreed between the two clubs, and could prove a stumbling block.
The exciting 22 year-old Dinamo Zagreb star will move in the summer to a bigger club, and today Croatia coach Bilic is keen that it happens sooner rather than later.
The former West Ham defender has spoken very highly of Kevin Keegan’s new Newcastle side, and thinks Kevin’s Newcastle United could be perfect for the 22-year-old if the reported £12M move really does go through.
Bilac said today:
“I would be very happy if Luka finds a new club before Euro 2008,” “Well, I would want this for all of my players who are looking for new clubs and are at the end of their contracts.”
“As for Luka, Newcastle United are no doubt a big club - just behind the top five.” “Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton.
“NUFC are in the range of Chelsea, Leeds United and Aston Villa but can invest a lot more money in new signings than let’s say Tottenham.”
“Also it’s more likely that Newcastle will be English champions than Tottenham.” “Luka wouldn’t be making a mistake if he signs for The Magpies.”
Good words from Bilic, so at least he’s on board trying to ensure the deal goes through.
You’ve just got to remember what Kevin did the last time around at Newcastle, and you have to believe he’s going to make Newcastle great again. At least Newcastle fans think so.
So in that way, it could be an exciting move for players to Newcastle in the summer, even though we cannot offer them European football, at least not for next season.
Comments welcome.

bilic has got a shall we say weird view on who the top clubs in britain are. sounds as if he hasnt seen english football in years if hes saying we are in the range of leeds but at the same time chelsea lol. hope this modric comes what a signing he’d be, just what we need. fingers crossed.

it would appear that bilic is nuts. he has lumped us, chelski and leeds together and his ‘big five’ inc spurs and everton but leave out chelski again. the guy is obviously well ontop of affiars in the prem i would say. it matters not though, if we can get modric i would be suprised as he is massive and would draw interest from any champ league team i would think. i think this one will not happen, alas.

If you look at the form league for the last 6 games i bet we are up there near top 4… just gotta carry that into next season.
15 Nev // Apr 24, 2008 at 14:45
the only thing we can offer modric is guranteed first team football … the top 4 would rotate him and at 22 the best option is to play week in week out
another positive if we do get him for like £12-15mil we could easliy sell him for £20mil+ in 3-4 years!
i even think modric should be top priority … sack owen off .. he can wait !

Strange interview Bilic gave. It looks like the man is in the early 2000’s. Leeds United, they are going down and down and down. Chelsea not in the top 5.

17 Ross // Apr 24, 2008 at 14:48
if the modric deal gets agreed, and goes through within a few days of the window opening, it will create a massive bang and send a message to every other team in the league.
what a way to start that would be. us immediatly signing modric, when the likes of chelsea, fiorentina, barcelona, have all been very interested in him.

If KK is planning on using Modric on the left of the three midfielders - where Barton is playing now - he will provide pace and a quality pass from a deeper position. Looking at that team, a player who would fit perfectly into Geremi’s position of crossing pinpoint passes to Owen and Viduka is Beckham. I know it sounds silly and will never happen, but he’s in good shape for his age, is a determined pro and that position needs someone who can cross in comparison to someone like Lennon who can’t. With Owen and Viduka, they need a good service and one reason why they’re getting it at the mom is Geremi. With the 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 its rather narrow meaning our full backs do all the running while our wide midfielders pass it. With Modric on the left and Beckham on the right and Owen and Viduka in the box = a lot of goals. It doesn’t matter that Beckham is slow, so is Geremi.

The daily mail also said that we signed Kiko from Athletico Madrid on a 4 yr deal worth £9m, and we didnt even speak to him so they r rubbish. As for those Bilic quotes im surprised none of you are clever enough to realise they are clearly outdated rubbish. Leeds as we all know are in League1 and Bilic obviously was talking about us and them at that time in fact I think these were quotes from when we signed Maric that they have tried to update.

Daniel, sorry, but Beckhams history and going through the motions for a shed load of cash. Agree we could use some quality in that position, but why keep Viduka in the center - he is way past his sell by date.
We could do with a first rate CF to take that spot and open up the areas for Owen & Martins. Crouch woud do, but would obviously prefer Eto’o lol.

Great player, but I wouldn’t get too excited yet. I think that Bilic is talking it up in order to get some of the bigger clubs interested. Have you ever heard of a national manager talking up a transfer in the press before it has taken place?
I highly doubt that Modric wants to come to a club that is out of Europe.
I’ll be glad to be proven wrong, but I’d advise everyone to be prepared for a disappointment here.

In other news Gareth Barry was in front of me at a cash point today(I live in the midlands). He’s not as tall as he looks on TV.
I should have asked him if he fancied playing for NUFC, behind Nicky Butt.

Not saying that I know everything about this kid, cos I’ve never seen him play, but at 22 it’s not like kadar or baheng who shouldn’t challenge for 2 years realistically, he needs to be close to the finished article.
I think lots of us are getting carried away because we are talking about big money.
I would much rather have either terry henry or ivor goodjohnson for what is a staggerring amount of money. (Maybe only Man U, Chelsea, Arenal, Liverpool or Spurs would spend that on one player)

From Croatian press today:
Zdravko Mamic (agent&Dinamo boss) allegedly broke off the negotiations due to not being satisfied with Newcastle’s offer £12m offer.
A source in England has confirmed that Modric was also in Newcastle along with Mamic brothers.
After having lunch in a luxury Malmaison hotel, three of them plus Peter Harrison proceeded to St. James’s Park, where they had met with Tony Jimenez and Dennis Wise.
But after hearing what Newcastle offered, elder Mamic broke off the negotiations and returned with his brother and Modric to Zagreb early in the evening.
Apparently, according to the source, Mamic wasn’t particularly happy with the offer that was presented.

68 micepie // Apr 24, 2008 at 18:47
Did anyone mention The Times article? I’d say that that’s more likely to be realistic than the Daily Mail – though the Times say 20 million but Zagreb maybe holding out for more!! If we make that kind of investment then KK must feel very confident in him.
Anyway, if we have a chairman who is a reported billionaire, then why not? I don’t want to see us splash money irrationally (as Chelsea did on Ballack and Schevchenko) but KK did say we would be looking at quality but well though-out buys…
Modric deal
Despite being linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool, Luka Modric, the Croatia midfielder, has visited Newcastle United to discuss a possible move to Tyneside.
The 22-year-old, who is considered one of the best prospects in Europe, visited Newcastle on Tuesday accompanied by Zdravko Mamic, the Dinamo Zagreb vice-chairman. Modric visited the club’s Darsley Park training ground before holding talks with Dennis Wise, the executive director (football), and Tony Jimenez.
Reports have suggested the playmaker is close to completing a £20million move to Newcastle, although it is thought Dinamo could be holding out for a higher fee. If the deal goes through, Kevin Keegan, the manager, would once again smash the club record, which was broken when the club paid £17million for Michael Owen almost three years ago.
p.s - I was going to post this just before the Moric news (or non-news)…
If I could pick 3 creative players we could buy - all of whom we’ve been linked with - I’d go for Gudjohnsen, Arshevin and Reyes. Part of the reason
is that
a) I think Gudjohnsen could play the current Owen role if Owen got injured (or if we are forced to sell, which I hope not) yet could also
play the Viduka role with Owen if Vid isn’t fit (etc, you can probably smell what I’m cooking at any rate)
b) Reyes could perhaps play the Martins
role in a 4-3-3/4-3-1-2…he didn’t quite make it at Arsenal but still has lots of potential, has that spontaneity in his game that Martins has, but when
Martins is fit could also play on the wing etc (when we play 4-4-2) and
c) Arshevin could just be a useful mf and play various roles. I’ve not seen him
play much on t.v, but would take everyone’s word that he’s a very good player.
The system we’ve played the last half-dozen games has worked really well, even making us seem more secure at the back too - and I see no reason
why it can’t work for most of next season, with maybe just alternative tactics when we need them, (mainly against the big 4?). Perhaps we should be looking
for back-up for Geremi too, or someone even better, because allowing Beye to attack whilst covering the space behind him seems to be an important part
of everything. I like Milner but playing him would mean Beye has got to hold back, and he’s very strong in attacking situations.
Anyone got good suggestions for players who can also fill these roles when needed, players who we don’t just want to sign because we like them but
ones who can enhance the style we’ve already adopted? A lot of the Julio Geordio foreigners mentioned are ones that I personally haven’t seen play!
69 ToonKing // Apr 24, 2008 at 18:48
trust me michael, he is worth every penny (if he adapts to the Premiership). He is brilliant, why he is still at Dinamo is anybody’s guess but he’s leaving finally and leaving for the Toon.
If we break another transfer record getting him it will be money well spent. If you want me to compare him to somebody i’d have to say… Hleb or Zidane. There.
70 ToonKing // Apr 24, 2008 at 18:52
good post micepie i don’t want Reyes but i’d take the other 2.
As Geremi’s backup, id’s say move Barton on the right side and get Larsson of Birmigham for the left/center. cheap and good, very decent at set pieces too.

this has obviously been well planned by wisey , to hit our targets while the other teams are pre ocupied .
i just hope that the modric deal wasnt leaked to the press to get barca and chelsea to come in for him , but ill say again that god knows who’d wanna play for chelsea when they could come to a propper football club .
what looks good is the fact we had him at the training ground , bit much effort that just to get some other teams to come in for him .

its modric showing how inspirational he is in a CL game for Zagreb, its 8 mins but watch the lot it gets better as it goes on. His vision speed and ability to pass at all rangs with both feet make him quality his energy is immense too. All we need is strikers that have the ability to read his quality as Martins is too often off side and Viduka to fat to outpace the backline

Is Bilic on crack?
Firstly: Is it more likely we’ll be champions than Tottenham? No. We need a much larger squad overhaul that they do, but anyway thats inconsequential as neither of us will be champions anytime soon!
Secondly: Bilic talks of a big 5 Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton. Ok, maybe he is talking traditionally but i don’t see his point. If Modric is going to cost 20 mil then sure as hell Everton can’t afford it. Chelsea ARE a big club, whether we like it or not.
Next: We’re in the same spending league as Leeds United!!??? 100% he’s on crack!!
ps Modric is a great player can see him going to Arsenal or Liverpool. Would love him at St James Park

I am surprised by those who make fun of the comments made by Slaven Bilic. He was obviously talking about the clubs in general, past and present. Leeds might be in League 1 today, but they were Champions Cup winners right? Have we ever been there? We were also in the first division 15 years ago, and if someone started watching football just 3 4 years ago, would he consider us as one of top clubs in England? When was the last time Everton got relegated? I have been born the last time they were champions, even my father wasn’t the last time we were ones. So I don’t think he ment disrespect to us or Chelsea, just as he didn’t overrate the others. And you all know very well he is not from Mars.
As for Luka, he is like his mentor, and it means a great lot that he backs his transfer. So I just pray to God it goes through.

Seems to me I’ll be looking my favorite Modrić in Newcastle next season! Well, I’ll need to collect the money to buy an NU shirt! Hope the deal goes through :)))
Greetings from Croatia!
P.S. - do you really don’t understand what Bilić is talking about or are you just making fun

Can we sign players outside the transfer window? am i missing something?
88 toonarmy08 // Apr 24, 2008 at 22:12
Hey guys ,just watched modric v fs basel, this guy looks awesome, would be a snip at 12mill,the 20 mill price sounds more realistic.Hope the story about zagreb called off negotiations due to fee not agreed isnt true.Find that hard to believe as the quotes yesterday were saying the fee was fantastic. We need to get this guy,he would be a legend at sj park!!
89 wsq // Apr 24, 2008 at 22:17
could equally be a flop!
90 51times // Apr 24, 2008 at 22:26
wsq you’re always so negative, it’s just annoying now. Go away.
And yes you can open talks with others teams about players during the season, on a pre-contract.
91 ToonKing // Apr 24, 2008 at 22:35
you can even sign a contract but he will only move on 1st of July.

103 51times // Apr 24, 2008 at 23:58
Have some faith, after all that’s happened this season we could use a little optimism.
104 Avram Grant // Apr 25, 2008 at 0:22
Hmmnnnnnnn……
Hi guys….this Modric guy looks pretty good, maybe a good back up player for Lamps…..
I think I’ll buy him for £40 million.
Sorry to pinch him from under your noses.
I’ll pop back on here next week to see who else I can buy, I like your scouting system big style.
105 GloryMagpie // Apr 25, 2008 at 0:35
Just ignore wsq’s comments. He is just a moron who always gives negative comments even the team is winning. Proves what a retard he is.
106 y2j // Apr 25, 2008 at 1:45
Have some faith you flogs. Shearer.Owen. Who realistically thought they would land here?
107 keeganpleasecomeback // Apr 25, 2008 at 2:31
Modric is not suited for the premier league…hes too small and got zero physique…he cant run for longer periods (and he smokes)
hes just like kranjcar from portsmouth - exelent tecnique but cant run and is extremely poor in the air -well hes only 5 foot tall or so…Lets spend the 15mil on some other midfielder..van der vaart or Diego for me.
108 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 3:25
Modric IS suited to the premier league. He is strong for his size, and he can handle theh physical game. would be a class signing. but signs now are indicating it is not going to happen and probably never was. all we can do is pray
109 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 3:34
He had an interview on some show (don’t remember the name) months back and he talked about the club he went on loan to for a little while. He said he got kicked a lot and he had to learn how to handle the physical side of the game. I don’t think that would be a problem.
110 keeganpleasecomeback // Apr 25, 2008 at 5:08
way too overrated player…I used to live in Zagreb and watched Dinamo play quite often and he only looks good as he plays aginst mediocre opponents - hes not that prominent for the croatian side either….I really hope its not true we are signing him - If we are I really hope my opinion of him is wrong
111 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 5:44
Yeah, that’s why Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona want him too.
112 moomfan // Apr 25, 2008 at 6:48
woooo…woooo, we’ve not signed this lad yet and although i feel good about our chances with keggy at the helm, we could be getting sucked into that media bullshit.
hey, all i know is one paper say 12m another say 20m and another say 17m and another say 25m and the idiocracy continues. get my drift laddyyyyys. we are NEWCASTLE fans till the end. #&%! those dirty bastards for tickling us. but it feels twizzly and hhhmmmm. europe beware the MAGS are coming. howay the lads on saturday.
113 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 25, 2008 at 8:55
all u saying it looks like the deal is off are having a laugh, there is nothing to say the deal is off, its all about how the deal is on, also he has told everyone he is moving to the toon.
114 Rich // Apr 25, 2008 at 9:59
didnt actually say he was moving to toon did he? + if someone big comes in now they would well take him away. i want to hear keegan say summit!!
115 wsq // Apr 25, 2008 at 10:53
If you consider me talking about newcastle’s shortcomings as negative, that means your referring to Keegan as a moron as well.
I have equal no. of positive comments as well that praise our wins, the players and the players that we are rumoured to sign etc. But I always attach a caveat to some.
I don’t appreciate you calling me a moron.
May you have a good day today fellow magpie.
116 wsq // Apr 25, 2008 at 10:57
Yea I’m a retard and I’m sorry friend. I’m sorry i shall refrain from having a discussion and follow suit on attacking personally other commentators that are retarded and moronic like me.
I apologize.

118 stk // Apr 25, 2008 at 13:22
when keegan does eventually go, hopefully for another 10 years yet, bilic would be my shout for next manager. i really like the guy as he has a sensible head.
also he’s talking about the clubs historically and not just in the last couple of years
hope viduka had a few good words for modric too. one year of no european footy and a good squad, carling cup anyone?
119 ROBULON // Apr 25, 2008 at 13:59
Come on guys, have a little faith!
Remember how awful Man City were last season and as soon as they get a bit of money to spend, they get some top class players in - and they still won’t get into europe this year.
120 joel // Apr 25, 2008 at 14:17
will some just get some news about luka modric!
i have a headache and i just want modric too join us as soon as possible
