Exciting new today that Croation midfielder Luka Modric seems almost a Newcastle United player.

Dennis Wise - reportedly led the chase for Modric
We broke the news yesterday, after getting a translation of a Zagreb news article on the transfer, and apparently it is Dennis Wise who is leading the deal. Dinamo Zagreb representatives were in Newcastle on Tuesday and are pleased, by all reports, with the £12M Newcastle have offered for the 22 year-old.
The news is all over the papers this morning, with most of them reporting it’s a done deal.
This just shows the wisdom of Chris Mort in appointing a 3 man full-time recruitment team of Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere.
The proof of the pudding of course will be in the eating, but these guys can earn their money every year, by ensuring a good supply of top talent, both youngsters and first team players, in the years ahead.
The fact that we seem to have a coup with Modric is just fantastic, and all due credit to the recruitment team. Wonder if the gossip press will ever realize how good the organization at Newcastle is, that Chris Mort has skillfully put together?
We liked it as soon as we saw it, and it could prove huge for us in this summer’s transfer window.
The Modric potential deal is certainly exciting for us all, and could be an excellent start to the transfer season for Newcastle United, which is just what we want and need.
We’ll just have to wait and see if there is any announcement from the club, that indeed the deal is done and dusted.

I can hardly wait for a new season, and capturing Modric will be one of the best deals in near Newcastle history because he will become a world class player, that’s for sure
2 Robert-Croatia // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:00
and he will be our most creative midfielder (if emre leaves)

for the first time i feel that we are going into next season fully prepared and with a solid plan behind it.
it seems like there are a number of players identified, some of which as mort said, wont be statement signings, but are still good enough to play at the highest level.
agree with you ed, i was behind the recruitment team from the start

yes
9 adam // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:11
is he left sided mid or central?
10 Robert-Croatia // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:12
he sometimes played on the left side for Dinamo but he plays best in central middlefield
11 Ross G // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:13
1) not to be the pesamist but this has happened before and never gone through, so dont get your hopes up if it does fantastic but it could be a croatian press trying to up his valuation or get others involved in a bidding war.
2) I agree its fantastic we are finally getting our transfer sorted early, I never understood our last minute Summer and January deals they rush the players and squad to adapt and that can never be good. The faster we bring in the players the more time they have to settle in, adapt, build inner squad relationships which then are mirrored on the pitch. And I for one can say when was the last time you saw an efficient early Newcastle signing???
12 broon ale // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:15
rob, are you in croatia now? are the reports in the croation press similar to the claims the english press have made? regarding modric being a certain signing.
13 Toonraid // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:17
Robert - would appretiate more details on this guy, style of play etc. All I know is that he was in the team that played england and he is left sided mid-fielder.
14 Robert-Croatia // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:17
this is the main news in Croatia, and i believe it is true because Kranjcar told Modric to come to premiership and Slaven Bilic said it would be better to go to Premiership and that’s a closed story for sure,I’m 99% sure he will come to Newcastle
15 Graeme // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:20
I’m waiting for Keegan or Mort to come out and say something on this one. Lets not start getting carried away about new signings for next season when this one aint over yet.
It has to be said, he looks a bloody good signing though, if its true and all credit to the back room staff.
16 Robert-Croatia // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:21
he is the best prospect in Croatia for many years,he is Croatia’s most creative player,he is very swift and has great pace,he can pass the ball better than any player in Croatia except maybe Kranjcar. He was Dinamo’s penalty taker this season and their captain and he is just 22 year’s old,and he can play good in defensive middlefield,he played there many times for Croatia

Like the look of this lad. I ‘ve only really seen him play the once (we all know when that was), but he just seems so damn fast.
Fingers crossed!!!
22 Spyro // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:36
he is an amazing talent. Strong, quick, great dribbler, two footed, great passer, amazing work rate.
I still refuse to believe this until i hear it officially.
23 marat18 // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:40
Jimmie
I don’t know croatian, but understand a little bit.
Nothing special in this article - Newcastle is going to offer 20-25 mill EURO and sallary around 1,2-1,5 mill p/a.
Liverpool, Spurs and City are also interesteed, but Newcastle are favourites.
That’s how i have understood this.
Waiting someone who knows the language for details.

Hope he comes. Waiting now for the nod and the smiles from Mort and KK. Simply do not want to be gazumped on this one. Too many wolves in the EPL who would take advantage of the scouting of others. This Modric is what I mean by we get our own players and not cast-offs from the Gang of Four. Well done to our backroom boys.
27 Leo // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:45
i like your team i would rather ashavin in right midfield though. only problem with the team then would be height….
28 Robert-Croatia // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:48
Newcastle gives most money for him,but Liverpool offers better wages.Tottenham,Man City are in the race too,but Newcastle is the main favourit, the deal will come to who offers better wages and transfer money.Slaven Bilić said to Luka to go to Newcastle because in his opinion Nufc is much bigger team then Tottenham, and he is right behind the top four, and Nufc has much better chance to win the tittle than Tottenham.:),And Silvio Maric who was in Newcastle, said that Luka would fit perfectly in Newcastle squad. It sounds good for me
29 Spyro // Apr 24, 2008 at 11:53

33 Spyro // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:01
hope your right marat, it would seem Tottenham and Chelsea are the real competition then. im worried about our lack of euro football. Also, i do not like the sound of us offering less wages than the others….oh god, i have been sucked into this very specualtion I promised myself not to.

I hope this is being done with the backing of KK and that he is having the final say in the matter. Until I read or hear about his involvement I will not be too enthusiastic as I do not ever want to see anything done over his head.
36 Hadrian // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:13
ive had luka down as the next peter beardsley for a few year now .
i dont think anyone has suggested buying him as we all expected him to end up somewhere like barca , and for fear of being told to stop playing FM or whatever game he’s popular on .
37 Whumpie // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:15
Ed - good question about the press. I think they’ll only start to realise that Toon-bashing is pointless a few matches into next season when the results just don’t leave any scope for it any more.
With you on the recruitment strategy too - it’s a typically well-thought-through reaction to the current market dynamic. The fact that Mort can do that one day and then get up on a stage and sing Blaydon Races in a pub the next just cracks me up.
My bro-in-law is a Liverpool supporter. Must forward that clip to him and ask what he thinks of our ownership situation…
38 Hadji // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:16
I just read that Liverpool have offered Modric 3 times bigger salary than us.
39 Hadrian // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:21
hadji
i dont think the salary is whats landing us him , there is alot more teams out there that want him (he and his agent know this aswell) who could pay far more wage’s then we are offering .
i think its more todo with walking straight into the team , 50 thousand supporters and a proper honest football club .
if i was a player atm , you wouldnt get me anywhere near chelsea or liverpool ,
one has no heart the other no soul .
were a propper football club .
40 David Z // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:21
I would not normally write stuff on boards - but according to wikipedia Modric is the cousin of Mark Viduka! could be a strange tenuous link?
41 CRAIGG // Apr 24, 2008 at 12:48
Hadrian youre right in one respect but i think Liverpool are a proper club still but spot on about Chelsea there an embarrasment to football there is nothing special about there club poor fans, stadium, history, manager what they have is lots of money and a bunch of moneygrabbing, overpaid long ball merchants i hate the fact that they can get 25,000 attendances for Champions league matches when clubs like us and dare i say it Spurs, Villa or Man City would relish the opportunity to rub shoulders with the big boys again and would never leaves seats free or make no noise in matchs of that importance.
Man Utd are a franchise that brainwash kids from young and without there foreign, Scottish, Welsh, irish, Cockney and Midlands based fans would never sell out. I have nothing against fans of clubs from different cities or countries but Man Utd is beyond a joke their shameless merchandise selling and fan inheritting in the far east and America is disgusting as are the TV stations who show their matches instead of giving weveryone a chance to get some TV money hence everyone watches man Utd and lots are taken in by them.

so then, any more news on the translation from the modric fansite?
43 aaron d // Apr 24, 2008 at 13:00
theres still nothing on sky sports website and they cover nearly every big story.
44 mrjay // Apr 24, 2008 at 13:02
Modric will become a legend…IF we can tie him down.
He is a replacement for Emre(5M), let Zoggy go(5-10M). Duff better anyhoo!!
Shorey (FREE!!!!) to challenge Enrique.
Let Carr go( NOW PLEASE!!!) would love a young Englishman as cover for the BEYEMEISTER (Hoyte a favourite!).
Let Cacapa, Diatta and Rozenhal go(hopefully we can get 2-3m for Roz) and look to sign a good defender as back-up to Faye and Taylor.
We still need a young Def Mid to cover the excellent Butt (Muamba of B/ham a favourite) and last but not least we need a R mid (F*****g love to get Bentley but would settle for Arshavin: more of a risk due to being Foreign but quality tells!!)
45 geordie nick // Apr 24, 2008 at 13:02
think our new scouting system could be really eciting for the future, for once it seems we may already know all our targets and we are starting to put the deals together now so tht the players can come str8 in wen the window opens instead of half way thro august, also gd to see us gettin the deals done b4 euro champs as players prices will inflate a lot, and as for luka modric, he luks like a cross between peter beardsley and hleb,

If you beleive the rumours, Liverpool are going for Barry.
50 Thomas // Apr 24, 2008 at 15:22
just hope Keegan had a say in the transfer. No point signing a player if the manager isnt keen on him. The less conflict of interest the better.
51 valle // Apr 24, 2008 at 15:23
tomo104… Very good team… Although i think we will replace Faye with Dunne or Metzelder.
52 valle // Apr 24, 2008 at 15:25
Thomas… Keegan has already stated that he is the one who gives the “go ahead” on deals… The other guys are an extension of his own hands and mouth.
53 Whumpie // Apr 24, 2008 at 16:01
All those stories about divisions between KK and others over the appointment of Wisey and co, and about player purchases being without KK’s approval, were complete garbage peddled by the southern press.
Mort and Ashley don’t make mistakes like that. You don’t get to make a billion by doing things like that. Everything that happens in the transfer market at NUFC will be the product of a well-designed process and clear responsibilities; you can bet on it.
But the press will, of course, print otherwise, because that’s what your average British paper-buying idiot likes to read, and because the Press Complaints Commission are a load of toothless, corrupt twunts who deserve to be gassed to death in Sam Allerdyce’s pants.
Point made. Tea required.
