Keegan Pours Cold Water On Top Transfers

April 25th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 278 Comments

Kevin Keegan has poured some cold water on two potential deals that have Newcastle going after both Thierry Henry and Luka Modric, but we wonder if the cold water is just on the Henry deal. We hope so.

kevin-keegan-628639.jpg

Kevin Keegan - didn’t say too much on Modric deal

When questioned about the recent reports about both Modric and Henry being linked to Newcastle Keegan said:

“Unfortunately that’s fantasy football,”“The Henry story came from a talk-in when a 10-year-old kid asked me if I could sign one player who would it be?” “I said ‘Henry,’ and from that we are now signing him.”

“And, with regards to Modric, if you put together a list of midfield players around Europe then he would be on it and he would be on everyone else’s list as well because he is a fantastic prospect.”

We think the Henry story was never too serious anyway, but we still believe Newcastle are trying, right now, to do the deal with Modric’ representatives.

Notice Kevin doesn’t say anything about the Tuesday meeting that multiple sources have said took place in the swank Malmaison Hotel on the quayside, with Modric Dinamo vice-president Zdravko Mamic in attendance.

We still have hopes that Newcastle can do the deal and if it goes through then Dennis Wise, who is said to be leading the deal on the Newcastle side of things, will have earned his spurs at the club, that’s for sure.

Comments welcome.

Keegan joked that he had had fantastic lunches at the training ground this week.

“Modric there with Thierry Henry….Deco has been in for a meal!”

Typical Kev, Thats why we love him Spyro and you other chipmonks

  • 2 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 17:49

By this time next week the deal could very well be done. I hope, at least.

  • 3 tdt // Apr 25, 2008 at 17:52

next week could be too late, get it done this weekend! b4 the hammers game! lol maybe?

  • 4 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 17:56

If it was up to me it’d be done tonight mate, haha.

  • 5 Chris F // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:01

yeah, despite what some places are reporting, he only dismissed the henry talk, but lavished praise on modric.

just have to wait and see.

  • 6 Leo // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:09

well before he came back as our manager he said in an interview something along the lines of

i am not going to be drawn into speculation, all i can say is that i love newcastle…

he is a man of clever words so just wait and see

i have a sneeky feeling the modric deal is going to be a disapointment because it doesnt happen. but i will wait and see anyway

  • 7 Charlie Bucket // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:10

He’s denied he had lunch with Modric at the club’s training ground.

He hasn’t denied that Dennis Wise has spoken to the player.

Also I hear young Fabio Zamblera is moving back to Italy this summer after failing to settle on Tyneside, hence why he was left out of the Northumberland Senior Cup final.

  • 8 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:14

Really? Hm, I remember reading he already thought of himself as an adopted Geordie…

  • 9 Bill F // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:23

I’m among the few who have not been getting too excited over the transfer talk. If it happens then I will.

  • 10 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:24

    its boring now craigg

  • 11 Yahya Ahmad // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:26

Are Newcastle gonna buy Luka Modric, im getting worried, i hope they do!

  • 12 Leo // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:27

zamrella i heard is just young and they were always going to put him into the under 18s to learn the league and settle in gradually

  • 13 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:47

we need a croatian speaker, i think it has taken another twist in our favor. http://www.net.hr/sport/page/2008/04/25/0604006.html

  • 14 harrier // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:53

Be aware, Keegan does not know anything about the transfer dealings. Himself, Wise, Jimenez, Mort and Ashley sat together to make a list of targets, then Wise and Jimenez were told to go out and sign them. Keegan says he will not know whether we will have our targets or not until they are signed or have snubbed us. He is in the dark as much as us, and all he can do is talk about what his targets were, which he confirmed Modric is one of them.

‘ Fresh from a series of meetings with Mike Ashley, the Newcastle owner, and chairman Chris Mort, Keegan revealed that he has targeted three or four top-class players he believes can take the club to the next level. The process of attracting those targets will now be left to Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere, the club’s technical co-ordinator. While that may not extend to an approach for Barcelona’s Thierry Henry, Keegan is now keeping his fingers crossed.

“We really put our two lists together because they have got a massive expertise in Europe,” he said. “While we on our list have got all the top ones, they are looking at the ones who maybe you can get who will be the next top ones, but are younger. When we out them together, it was quite interesting.

“That’s it now. If someone asks me how we are getting on with our targets, I can honestly say, ‘I don’t know’ because I am not party to that. But I will know the minute they are complete or have failed, I guess - hopefully complete.” ‘

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/article3816434.ece

I think its a credit to the new system, Keegan can focus on his current team and let somebody else worry about the wheeling and dealing. Furthermore, it allows Wise and Jimenez to use their knowledge of the transfer market to get gems at fair prices, something that we were worried keegan would not be able to do due to his long absence from professional football.

  • 15 tdt // Apr 25, 2008 at 18:57

what does that croatian report say??

  • 16 chris // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:05

hadji can you have a look at that new link mate? or the other lad from croatia?

  • 17 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:17

i dont know what it says but its got lots of talk of euros and newcastle

  • 18 consettmags // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:18

Sorry to put a negative spin on the Modric situation but sign him or not would he fit into our 433.Certainly away from home I reckon we need three grafters in there (like we have now).I would still test the water with Carrick as he is more of an allround midfielder.Dont get me wrong Modric is hot property and a KK type of player but £20-25 million on one player needs to spent very wisely.

  • 19 iain // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:18

considering keegan isnt actually involved in negotiations idoubt hes 100% sure how well the modric talks went.

now by the sounds of things from croatia, we actually have a vert good chance of getting him despite the fact so many top clubs have wanted him for a while as keegan pointed out today.

spurs sent some people to croatia for talks a while back they obviosly got nowhere near as we have to getting him so again id say getting the player to even consider coming here is a step forward.

  • 20 scott9 // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:21

ive come bak from a trip today ive been at the the lake district for 5 days and i come bak and were buying luka modric i hope this rumour is true

  • 21 Nick // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:22

    @ Geordie Gerrard7

I can translate some of that article.

    basic points are…

-this trasfer will be record breaking for a player sold from the Croatian league.

-Newcastle flew the Mamic brothers out to England, but Modric did not go there as was reported on Wednesday

-Tottenham want to know how Newcastle is offering so they can match or exceed the price

that’s about it. Nothing much to that article really.

  • 22 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:22

the 4-3-3 will likely not make it into next season.

  • 23 tdt // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:26

regards the question of formation… 433 is the tempary solution, as it works well with the players we have. i am quite sure the 442 will be next seasons formation, with fast accurate wingers, great creator in the middle and a sturdy DM to protect the back 4. dont u think?

  • 24 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:27

He will fit into our 4-3-3 he can play any midfield position.

  • 25 Hadrian // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:36

    4-3-3 ? u having a laugh ?

this is keegan we are talking about here , expect WINGERS next season , 4-4-2 all the way .

  • 26 belfast toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:37

  • 27 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:40

£12m? The latest fee is £20m mate.

  • 28 Tripp // Apr 25, 2008 at 19:59

this little fella is THAT good .
if there was a player out their that has a chance of doing half of what peter beardsley could do on a pitch , modrics the guy .
the only other player of his and style out there is maybe diego . but your never inclined to say those names incase you get tarred with the old FM brush

  • 32 nightfall // Apr 25, 2008 at 20:25

the article says modric’s representatives were in newcastle for 5 hours and they said that they’re not happy with our offer and that it needs to be improved…and that tottenham wants to offer more…

    damn..

  • 33 Robert-Croatia // Apr 25, 2008 at 20:28

the article says:newcastle sent the biggest offer in croatin first division history, and Mamic said that nufc are very close to securing the deal.sounds good, keep the faith

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 20:46

The only other player id have to Modric is Zlatan, but that is out of the question :(

What have croatian pundits been saying? Do they think he should come here?

  • 37 chuck // Apr 25, 2008 at 20:59

Interesting HARRIER , when I commented last week on whether all of the management groups including scouts, Mort etc., were on the same page I was told I had`nt a clue etc.
I think the truth is closer to your read on the situation, that here is our list KK being you don`t know the market take your pick a la carte, then we will make the deal.
I think that`s why KK seem a bit embarrassed about the whole situation, does this make sense?

  • 38 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:03

Its not boring Spyro i want you to admit that all your shitty remarks about Keegan were not warranted.

Deschamps is a joke with a ugly face like a pug and would have been on his arse if he had the stick that KK took from the bastard press.

Koeman is the most pathetic example of an big headed overrated manager ive ever seen maybe Alan Ball or Bryan Robson can rival him for their playing career carrying them to managers jobs and he is an ugly SOB.

Ramos also will be showed up and will be back to his ridiculous record of being sacked in 8 out of 11 clubs and lasting 5 games at Betis when Spurs see him for what he is and he is F***ing ugly as well.

Just say it you were wrong about KK being so out of touch, Poor tactically and he is the right choice for the job.

    Playing Career:

    3x English Championships
    1x German Championship
    1x FA Cup
    1x European Cup
    2x UEFA Cups
63 England Caps 21 England Goals
European player of the year 78 & 79

    Managing Career:

    2x Premiership Runners up
    2 Division 1 Titles
    1 Division 2 Title
    Euro 2000 Qualification with England

His record makes a mockery of the other jesters you suggested, He even won Superstars after falling off his bike and ripping the skin off his back and had a number 37 hit called “Head over heels in Love” it was crap but we still love him FFS

ADMIT IT YOU WERE WRONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 39 Toon1978 // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:07

Has Modric signed yet lol come on Ashley sort it please.

  • 40 Hadrian // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:09

chuck , every manager is given a list of whats out there and availible .
wisey and vetter are glorified scouts .
its unfair on keegan to imply he’s not got a clue , considering wiseys just spent the last few years in lower division mediocrity , wisey would have been given a list of targets to persue by keegan .

wisey and vetter will be racking them and stacking them just like every other scouting network .

  • 41 SteveM // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:20

Reading between the lines - and thats all I can do - I’d say that Newcastle are interested in signing at least 3 household name players of the calibre of Henry, Ronaldinho, Lampard, Gerard, Drogba etc. and 2 more bright propects. MO has said KK has told him about the type of Big Name players he’s looking to sign and is excited, KK has talked of top players and specifically hasnt ruled out anyone, MA said he was going to put £250 Million into the club over 5 years - that buys you top players - Now if I was a top player maybe I wouldn’t want to come to Newcastle if I was going to be the only world class player here - but if you are signing 3 or 4 top players then its a different matter - it becomes exiciting. MA says he want to challenge for the Premiership TITLE not just the UEAF cup places or even top 4 - but the TITLE and to win the title you need TOP players like rooney, ronaldo, drogba, lampard, fabregas, gerrard, torres etc

If MA is in it to win it at some stage he’ll spend big big big - and I think he’ll do it sooner rather than later - remember its “250Million + TV + Gates + Merchandise to spend mainly on players (transfers +wages)

  • 42 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:37

I feel Newcastle are seriously under represented on Sky Sports Review of the Year the only thing we have on the page is highlight of the year which was King Kevs return obviously.

Habib Beyes right back position in the team of the year has been robbed from him in favour of guess what a player from a southern team Glen (not good enough for Chelsea) Johnson.

Flop of the season has gone to Malouda when Alan Smith for £7M is the out of sight winner.

The low point of the season was Steve McClaren with his brolly, When it should have been Big Sams delighted face when we got that amazingly credible draw at the mighty Stoke City.

And the manager of the year Phil Brown a life long Sunderland fan and long term buddy of Allardyce why not try Glenn Roeder who took Norwich from relegation certainties to play off contenders in a few short months after leaving SJP with dignity.

    Damn you southern journalists

  • 43 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:50

Craigg your boring, no i wont apologise as KK has proved no one wrong yet, consistency is what makes a good manager. come back down to earth

like i said, a consistent season with UEFA Cup spot at the end of it is what i said he would not achieve, stop mentioning my name in your posts, its sad, move on

  • 44 micepie // Apr 25, 2008 at 21:51

We should really just be happy that we survived this season! If we get glamourous signings then great – I hope we do get the likes of Modric etc but if we just sold, say, Carr, Amoebi & Rosenzhal and got in players like Dunne, Riise, Sidwell and Crouch I think we should also be excited about that – and if we can keep the rest of our current squad (especially Owen and Martins).

  • 45 scotty // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:02

I’m just waiting for the “so called fans” on here to praise Little Dennis - after they ridiculed him and his position at the club………. Especially if he pulls this one off!!!

  • 46 John // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:05

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A35156388

  • 47 Toon1978 // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:05

Scotty if he pulls this off then he will get the plaudits but nothing has happenned as yet. Newcastle are dragging their heels over money so we are shooting ourselves in the foot. This kid Modric is meant to be world class yet M.Ashley seems reluctant to push this deal through fast IMO.

  • 48 John // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:06

We need to up our offer ..Seems like the spuds are sniffing round

  • 49 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:08

He has proved everyone wrong as he apparently would have walked away by now if we listen to the pricks in the papers

Consistancy makes a good manager does it how consistant is winning a league title in your first full season with each football club he has ever managed and also qualifying for europe in his first season in the premiership with Us and City.

No i’ll tell you what is sad is the fact that you dont call me deluded in every post anymore now KK has started to do what me and plenty of others said get the club back to winning ways and playing real football also making this club a top 4 contender again Starting with Modric coming in hopefully by the end of the weekend after we beat West ham 2-0 tomorrow.

  • 50 Leo // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:13

i never critisised the appointment of wise, i thought it was a good thing, check back to the previous article… might take you a while tho it was some time ago haha

    same as

  • 52 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:21

I didnt agree at first as he doesnt have the contacts or knowledge of the overseas leagues that i felt was required but Vetere does and Wise knows the lower leagues inside out so it overall was a good move.

  • 53 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:34

yet again another boring post by Craigg who fails to come down to earth. Proved NO ONE wrong. We win and draw a few games and you expect an apology, lol. be serious. I will make my judgement on next seasons performance. Most people who are smart will also

  • 54 Toon1978 // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:40

Spyro i must agree this season has been a disaster and any judgement should be made next season but on the Modric front i am still sitting with me fingers crossed hoping and praying lol.

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:47

We better get Modric the only player id rather have is Ibrahimovic or Ronaldo, both arent gonna happen.

Ibra is the best striker in the world.

  • 58 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:47

Toon1979 most people with sense will judge by next year and not let the moment swallow them up, you cannot judge a manager on part of a season

  • 59 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:49

Why kill yourself, kill one of those Spurs dogs instead.

Also Tom_Toon while Ibrahimovic is very good, Inter don’t allow him enough freedom imo. He’s also meant to be a complete wanker.

  • 60 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:51

i too hate spurs, i hope we beat them to modric, as some may know, my housemate is a spurs supporter and he was so angry when i showed him the luka modric articles linking him to us. they can f**k off!

  • 61 Toon1978 // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:51

  • 62 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:54

i dont know to tell the truth, i dont think any of us do right now. There have been signs that we will and signs that we wont. One thing is for sure, we will all know by the end of the month as apparently he wants to sort out his new club before then…if we dont get him, i dont want to see him at spurs or chelsea (especially SPURS), like salt in the wounds that would be

  • 63 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:55

Hes ‘meant’ to be a complete wanker. Yes he is a cocky bastard but only to the media and that how everyone sees him. There was this interview and the journalist said how did you miss that chance and he was saying, do you want a fight and stuff and you can try it. hahaha.

  • 64 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:56

  • 65 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:56

  • 66 Toon1978 // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:57

hahaha i know what u mean i hope with Viduka being his cousin he can persuade Modric to come here. Maybe playing in the same team as his cousin will attract him who knows.

  • 67 ScottyT // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:58

glen johnson was absolutely shite at chelsea.. hw has he all of a sudden became the right back of the year. hes not been great at portsmouth just OK. agree habib beye has been consistently gr8 all season and deserves it.

and yes low points of the season were that pathetic 0-0 draw we scraped at stoke afterwards fat sam saying he was happy with tht piece of shite. wat others shall we pick out from the fat sam collection…

liverpool home 3-0 shud hv been 8 or 9. didnt even go for a win at home pathetic.

sunderland away - local derby, play for a draw suicidal lucky for a draw pathetic.

derby away - total embarassment still their only win pathetic style of football sickening.

wigan, birmingham, villa man city home - lucky wins and draw and defeat respectably. played shite in all games and how villa didnt win is a mystery shocking football to watch.

reading and wigan away - play for a draw fkin pathetic h8 the feckin eedyit.

  • 68 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 22:59

    bacon? lol

i dont think Arsenal are interested in him, he is only being linked with them because of Eduardo.

Like Tom Toon said he wont go to chelsea probably because of their massive squad, and no one knows if the manager is staying or going, same with their star players.

which leaves only tottenham, i do believe tottenham are our main threats. We need to be ready to offer big money as Tottenham will only waste Modric playing him on the left wing.

  • 69 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:01

Ok agreed when the end of next season comes i will apologise if it goes tits up

Moving on, I think We will get Modric now but i still think we should drop any interest in Huntelaar it is too risky wasting our entire transfer budget on 2 players when we need at least 5 player in different positions.

  • 70 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:02

Better get Charlie on his way soon then. They can have him and we’ll have Modric and play him in his proper position.

  • 71 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:03

    Tottenham have a salary cap.

Arsenal wanted him but Wenger said when asked about him: ‘Croatians are very good but very expensive’ and thats when the price quoted was 10 mil.

Chelsea were going to buy him but planned to loan him to PSV and Modric said he didnt want that.

Barca and Bayern are barely interested in my opinion.

Liverpool probably dont have that money to spend on one player and cm is their least priority they need a winger, a striker and a full back.
Why would people want to go to man city.

Between us and Spurs depending on his wage demands, so we are favourites.

  • 72 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:04

Ibrahimovic is a complete w****r and i was happy when i heard Gattuso slapped him in 2004 or something. He always picks on the small players in the opposing team. However, he is a big talent and one of the best. I prefer Berba though.

  • 73 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:05

i agree Tom, Modric is a good player but hardly a must buy for teams like Barca, Chelsea and Bayern

  • 74 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:06

He is a very agressive player without being stupidly agressive and actually getting suspensions and stuff. He is very intimidating, thats why he is one of my favourites.

  • 75 Toon1978 // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:06

Tom toon you put that well and you have increased my optimism in getting Modric thankyou.

  • 77 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:08

Scotty youre right about all those away matches Reading, Wigan, Derby, Mackems, Boro, Stoke all pathetic as were the home matches against Liverpool, Portsmouth and Man City

We could have finished top 5 this season if we had played proper football and not rugby league shite.

I cannot wait for Allardyces next job and when his new side come to SJP.

His style of play will cause a bit of a stir in their league!

  • 86 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:14

Where did you hear that ?

  • 87 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:14

i believe Tottenham will compete with us in terms of wages if they have to as they have been following modric for a while now and wont want to lose out. However, Bilic recommended us and we are ahead in the race so hopefully that will be enough to see them off

  • 88 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:15

    My second team.

None of our good players are suited to long ball except Luisao.

  • 89 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:15

All the spurs fans say it!

  • 90 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:16

Spryo - They won break their wage structure for Modric cos then Keane and loads of other will want increases.

  • 91 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:16

I read on some player wages list that Bent was on £90k a week

  • 92 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:16

but Bent is on 95k, remember when the list of top football earners came out about a month ago?

  • 93 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:17

    Its a joke!

  • 94 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:17

By a portuguese power broker firm! the clubs didnt tell them the figures.

  • 95 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:17

Craigg you obviously saw it, the list was brought out just a month ago or something

  • 96 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:18

You can buy kevin davies to play up front

  • 97 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:20

It was on here to annoy people about Michael Owens wages that he didnt deserve a month ago

  • 98 ScottyT // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:20

exactly them matches we have dropped points in could have had us in with a chance of europe or at least intertoto.

for your sake tom_toon i hope benfica arent as stupid as they may seem to be if they are persuing this oaf.

he deserves a shitty league 1 or championship job cos thts the only teams hes capable of managing.

  • 99 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:22

  • 100 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:24

We have been linked to Strachn and Big Sam, absolutely shocking. Mourinho please! No chance though. Scolari, he will leave portugal, we need a fresh manager. Mourinho again please.

  • 101 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:25

TBH i thought that Spurs had a wage cap, Thats why we signed Duff as we offered him the same money he got a Chelsea when spurs wouldnt match it.

    But that list suggested otherwise.

  • 102 51times // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:25

Allardyce has to look abroad for a job, nobody in the UK will f*cking touch him after seeing what he did to us.

  • 103 ScottyT // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:26

true hopefully theyll be in tha championship tho .. also missed out derby home on there.

the whole derby thing is a total embarassment to our club. they have 4 of their 11 points off us! god ive been praying all season for them to just beat som1 else but they r just so shite! hats off to allardyce for doing his part in raising their points above double figures. tw@t!!

  • 104 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:27

Why dont you try for Souness hes out of work for some reason, He used to be your manager as well didnt he ?

  • 105 Spyro // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:28

i agree ScottyT the derby defeat does hurt.

however, if Derby do in fact beat or equal sunderlands record of lowest points as a result of our defeat it will give the cloud a silver lining of some sort, lol

  • 106 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:29

    Yep, he was shit.

  • 107 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:29

  • 108 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:32

Steve McClaren was having Spanish lessons maybe he could get some portugese lessons while he’s at it.

    What a record he has:

    Carling Cup winner
    UEFA Cup Finlist
    England Manager 06-07

  • 109 C // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:34

I would love it if we get Modric. But if we don’t we don’t. The only thing I can say that if all this is true, is that I am loving the new managements transfer plan. It seems that the days that we are buying over the hill players coming for the big paycheck are finally over. So Dennis and Tony sweep the smaller leagues and find the lump of coals that King Kev can mould into diamonds.

And can everybody stop bad-mouthing Ibra. He is one of the best players that Sweden has ever produced. He is a winner and he wants to win every game he plays. Just look at his record since he left Sweden he has won the league every year (if you count the Juve titles). The only problem he has is with the media and one newspaper in particular: Aftonbladet which he is boycotting. The paper wrote some stuff about a nightclub visit and spinned the story to the point that the paper said that he had molested a girl at the club. This was later proven that it was totally made up by the newspaper. No wonders he is angry with the media.

  • 110 Tom_Toon // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:36

Ibra is a legend if only we had players like that in england.

  • 111 AdamCF // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:37

Modric.. definitely yes. Henry.. a backward step.

  • 112 ScottyT // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:37

aye spyro spose but i very much doubt its gonna happen like cos they need 2 wins to beat it or a win nd a draw to equal it. nd they have arsenal on monday lol. we should have hammered them at home lyk we were lucky to draw in the end bad times.

playing the football we are atm we’d thrash them like villa did am sure.

  • 118 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:43

I think it may be decided by tomorow morning on whether we get Modric or Not i really hope we do but as si said we cannot waste our whole trnsfer budget on a couple of players, We need 1 CM, 2 full backs, 1 CB and 2 wingers thats why huntelaar would be a pointless signing IMO we dont desperately need another striker.

  • 119 CRAIGG // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:45

I think it is best to utilise Smiths attributes in CM like giving away free kicks on the edge of his penalty area and passing to the opposition constantly and needlessly diving into tackles .

  • 120 ScottyT // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:46

id go wit that craigg but id say we need 2 CM’s really cos emre nd zog will be on their way nd i dont rate geremi very highly tbh.

  • 126 geordie nick // Apr 25, 2008 at 23:59

nobody can prove ow much any player is on, just as u cant prove tht they have a salary cap, it was published along with the other top earners which all seem to be correct so why wudnt his salary be correct

  • 127 ScottyT // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:03

aye well thts 7 players there i think we need before weve got a complete squad of players capable of challenging for bigger and better things. 2 CM’s, 1 LB, 1 RB, 1 LM, 1 RM, 1 CB.

i dont think we should buy all of these players in one go however as we did that last summer and it took them a while to settle in. i think these are the positions we need to build up over the course of the next few seasons adding replacement signings in if players leave.

  • 128 51times // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:03

I guess my brain just won’t allow me to believe that a player like Bent is on that much money.

  • 129 Tom_Toon // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:03

It was by a portuguese power broke site, its estimations, they do not know.

    Tom_Toon, you are a cockney?

  • 132 Spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:13

tom i aint being funny but estimates are usually near to the actual amount otherwise it would just be a guess. 50k cap and 90k is a bit too big of a gap. Also, it doesnt matter what Spurs fans say when it comes to wages as they are oh so proud of being ‘the team that doesnt have to give high wages to get top players’, and they will not want to lose that title without a fight. as i said before, i live with one and he always brings it up at every opportunity…or at least he DID, until he found out about Bent

  • 133 Jack // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:13

Harry Kewell is one of the 50 highest paid footballers??? He never gets a game at Liverpool!

darren bent on 97k has got tobe bullshit ,
considering all the talk is how spurs are going to change their wage structure to keep the now 50k a week berbatov on the books , i cant belive the 97k at all . but i know its been printed , in the same lists tho not one other spurs player in sight .

spurs wage cap 60k btw .

Does it matter How Much bloody Darren Bent earns Modric is a £20m done deal for the toon:

The next matter is how we skank Gareth Bale off Spurs im thinking we give Ramos- N’Zogbia and £15m in Exchange for Bale and Aaron Lennon.

He would take it as he wants to bring in loads of players from Spain who will flop just like Liverpools spanish contingent bar Torres and Alonso.

  • 148 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:28

craigg , wish i was as confident as you on the modric deal , its funny how many times the suggestion was laughed off not so long ago , but if modrics even slightly possible , surely diego and VdV are aswell .
we also have the added bonus of keegan being an all time hero at VdV’s current club . ive said all along , the top 4 cant take them all .

we need another ginola scenario , someone world class but out of favor with a point to prove .

  • 149 Tom_Toon // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:30

Diego and VDV are incredibly unrealistic. Not only are they better than Modric, they dont play in croatian and nor are they croatian + their wage demands will be astronomical.

  • 150 CRAIGG // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:31

Hadrian the fact that we are being considered geniune contenders to sign players of Modrics stature around Europe shows we are going back in the right direction finally 4 years after Bobby was sacked.

  • 151 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:33

better than modric ? id strongly disagree with you there like , ill take the argument that its a poorer quality league , but id place modric above diego anyday , diego can be lazy for me at times .

    i want kuzmanovic mostly :)

  • 152 Tom_Toon // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:34

you’d want kuzmanovic over modric or diego?!?!? Now that is mad.

Diego is better than Modric. VDV is better than both.

  • 153 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:37

nah i want kuzmanovic aswell as modric.
we can go on all night , but no way in hell i agree diego tobe better than modric .
u watched kuzmanovic enough tobe able to say that aswell tom ? i dont think you have cos the young lads quality .

  • 154 CRAIGG // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:38

WE need more available players who want to play for us

Shaun Wright-Phillips not so long ago said signing for Newcastle would be a dream move maybe even more so to be reunited with Keegan

Maybe similar scenario with Dunne who calls KK his saviour

Shorey could be another who wants to play for us as it is a huge step up from Reading and would help his England chances again.

McGeady surely wants to try out The Premiership and geographically we are a lot closer to glasgow than London, Manchester or Scouse clubs.

Lots of foreign players would love the chance to play for newcastle as well.

We can still attract quality and we will need to as the teams above us wont stand still OK maybe West Ham and Blackburn wil but the others wont.

  • 162 harrier // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:58

i am on the fence, its the only article, newsnow haven’t picked it up even though its been out 24 hours, their source is just ‘A top Dinamo source told us late last night: “Everything has been agreed and Modric will be going to Tottenham. All the details are in place and the fee is £20m.” ‘

  • 163 harrier // Apr 26, 2008 at 0:59

  • 164 chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:03

yeh newsnow is normally pretty good but give it a few hours and it will be flooded with articles about it just wait till the mora it will be everywhere however just remeber it is the sun…..and we all know what that means jack****.

and top sources at dinamo have said he was a newcastle player on wednesday

  • 168 chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:07

a personally dont think barca or chelasea will come in for him but i dont tottenham are any more attractive than us and we have a billionaire owner so if the bid needs to be upped by 2.5 million why not do it?

yeh think so that is a very good point harrier that was my knee jerk reaction there`!!!

  • 170 harrier // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:11

looking more and more like bullshit, with newsnow adding articles every 4 minutes, none of them mentioning tottenham winning, its now been an hour since the sun posted this “news” from their “high placed” source, news being poo and high placed source being their colon

  • 171 chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:14

ramos?revolution? spurs have been toss since they won the carling cup and are languishing in the league exactle the same as us but the difference we have had a bad season the spurs fans are used to being mid table cannon fodder.
    MODRIC FOR THE TOON.

  • 175 harrier // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:20

why would the ramos revolution be any more attractive than the keegan one?

  • 176 chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:21

sorry jack yeh good point bowt the league form.. a think that dinamo are trying to get as much as they can for the player hence they are constanly leaking stories about modric so other clubs panic. the people surrounding modric are vey good businessmen.

what are you going on about spyro? there is no info about tottenham getting anywhere near with negotiations to us….

  • 183 harrier // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:28

I think what the Sun has done is taken the few croat news sources that said spurs are asking how much we bid and declaring that the london team has won the race. As time passes im feelig more and more its just BS, there “world exclusive” should have been picked up by more sources by now

  • 184 chris // Apr 26, 2008 at 1:28
