Keegan Admits He Could Sell Emre In Summer

Saturday April 26th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 57 Comments

Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has admitted today that he could sell Emre in the summer.

emre-training.jpg

Emre - may not be in Kevin’s plans for next season

Newcastle manager Keegan said today:

“A lot of people say Emre has been unsettled but I don’t see an unsettled player here.”

“I see a player who is obviously very keen to play in Euro 2008, which he will for Turkey, and, if he doesn’t play in the next two weeks, I’ll let him go a week early to their training camp.”

“I don’t want to keep him around here if he’s not going to be involved and, with the way the team are playing, that may be the case.”

“We have four African players playing four World Cup games between June 1-21 so we need to decide how much of a summer break we give them.”

The bold piece of Kevin’s statement above seems to suggest he could let Emre move on in the summer.

Note: Or is that statement in the context of not keeping him around for the last few game of the season?

So much for keeping our most creative player at Newcastle. But Emre is extremely injury prone and we should still be able to get some cash for him in the summer, especially if he performs well for the Turkey in the European Championships.

We could get at least our money back on Emre, which will also help to fund bringing new midfielders to the club.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

He’s been injured to much, but still a very creative player

  • 2 Taiwantoon // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:18

Get someone really good before we sell Emre plz. He can be replaced, but we need to do it properly.

  • 3 adaaaam // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:19

wasnt he just talkin about lettin him leave early for the euros?

  • 4 sweendogg007 // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:20

We can manage without him think we should get 2/3 mil for him

  • 5 sweendogg007 // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:20

Sure let him go to spurs.

  • 6 ObaFan2 // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:22

Who’s this Emre you talk of?

Well he’s been injured so much we’re not gonna miss him that much.

I’m sure KK will find some great replacement, someone who wants to play for the team and hopefully they wont be as injury prone.

  • 7 robertsa // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:22

sell him and replace him with Derek Riordan from celtic. Riordan will be cheap as he fell out with strachan but he is top class

  • 8 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:23

Repace him with Van Der Vaart!!!!! :)

  • 9 Andy1 // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:24

I think Keegan is just saying that the current team will probably play till the end of the season. I think the team would be better though if he came in for Geremi - Barton movin to the right. He is more creative, faster and probably has better delivery from setpieces.

I think he can still be a great player here. If he plays to his best he is easily our best midfielder at the moment.

  • 10 Leo // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:24

well replace him with arshavin mcgeady moutinho the list is again endless…

have we all forgot that most of our signings will come from scotland….?

  • 11 Davy C // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:28

Come on Ed! You’ve obviously taken that out of context!! Keegan wouldn’t hint at getting rid of anyone unless there was a real problem (like the Bellamy fiasco).

I think that Keegan will be happy to keep Emre and won’t jeapardise him getting injured before the Euros but will be trying to help accommodate one of our best players.

If he comes back refreshed and fit for the start of the next season he will be a great asset. Emre’s had a decent break due to injury so getting fit for the Euros and then a short break before the new season may be ideal for him.

  • 12 sweendogg007 // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:28

I think we just need a link player to replace him with someone like carrick

  • 13 faustino // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:32

I agree Adam and Davy….that paragraph is in reference to letting him leave before the end of the season to work with the Turkey squad for the Euro cup NOT the will to sell him.

He won’t be fit enough to play for us this season anyway and as Kev says as long as we’re playing 4-3-3 and playing well he won’t get in the side so he may as well be getting fit with his national squad.

We can’t afford to sell Emre anyway. Creative midfielders are at a premium in our squad and the simple fact is if Butt, Geremi or Barton get injured he would get a start.

Come on Ed, there willbe enough people jumping on KKs quotes for sensationalist headlines over the next few months - you don’t need to do it to ;)

  • 14 Davies // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:40

To be fair to Ed, this was taken out of context long before it appeared on this page. Looks like Ed may have got to one of the other articles instead of the original source.

If Emre can stay fit, he’s worth keeping. If he can learn to tie his shoe laces so he doesn’t trip over so much, or avoid getting run over by the bigger lads, he’ll be okay. Otherwise let him go.

A creative midfielder is no use from the treatment room, no matter how good he is.

Note: Stop giving Ed grief, he proivides a valuable service and seems like a nice bloke.

  • 15 Bill F // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:50

I agree with Davies, if it wasn’t for Ed we wouldn’t be able to have such open and easily accessible discussions. Having said that if he was the wilting violet type he would probably told us all to stuff it years ago. So I don’t think he objects to some criticism so long as we do not go overboard.

  • 16 faustino // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:55

    Who’s giving Ed grief?

The reason it’s been misunderstood here and on Soccerblog is that the quote has been split into incorrect paragraphs; it’s an honest mistake.

If you don’t put a return in after ‘training camp’ it’s quite clear what KKs saying.

  • 17 norwegiantoonfan // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:56

i agree with you ronaldeano…..my man would be rafael van der vaart

  • 18 lee // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:57

    cum on van der vaart

  • 19 Jack // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:58

    lee that sounds wrong haha

  • 20 faustino // Apr 26, 2008 at 11:58

I think that’s going a bit far. lol

  • 21 ronaldeano // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:02

@Lee, all over your face?!!!! lol :)

  • 22 toonarmy08 // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:07

Agreed van der vaart is very good player ,but do we think we can get him???he will be guaranteed european football maybe champ league with hamburg .Absolutely gutted about modric ,he is class ,maybe spurs may have a chance against us now lol.Maybe someone like samir nasri from marseille would fit the bill.Come on big mike get that cheque book out.Its obvious we have the cash ,we bidded 8mill 4 woodgate in jan and sounds like we pushed spurs all the way 4 modric. If only we were in europe!!!

  • 23 Jack // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:08

we didnt push them all the way though
we had a full day to increase the offer but we didnt, ashley seems to be afraid of opening his cheque book

  • 24 t-g-w // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:17

Sorry this is taken out of context. keegan is just saying how he’s going to let Emre join up with the Turkey squad early for Euro 2008 if he’s not playing here…

incidentally I’ve been disappointed with Emre at Newcastle. He’s never performed for us but everyone here seems to really rate him. I say get rid, we can do a lot better. He simply doesn’t score enough goals for an “attacking” midfielder.

  • 25 Gooderz // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:19

If we sell Emre then we’d need to bring in 2 creative players. Hopefully this would consist of one from any of the better leagues in Europe, and then perhaps taking a chance on a fairly young South American, who would then have more time to adjust to the Premiership.

Whilst Modric’s move is a kick in the teeth, I’m happy we are at least looking for a playmaker. then all we’d need is someone a bit special in defence, and not special like Bramble was.

  • 26 spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:20

how much did woodgate cost spurs?

  • 27 toonrmint // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:22

go for all theses spl players.
    cuellar
    mcgeady
    riordan

dont get van der vaart hell be shit

  • 28 toonarmy08 // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:24

jack -we dont actually know if modric said he wanted to come to the toon as reports are now saying modric didnt come to the training ground,it was the mamic brothers who came.Modric probably wants euro football which unfortunately we cant offer him.I must say im still surprised he chose spurs and not a champ league team. But credit to spurs they put the money up.Hope he’s shite there lol

  • 29 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:25

Ed stop twisting the words of storys to make your own headlines .

keegan said he’d let emre goto turkey early , rather than trying to get him on the pitch when our teams playing so well .

this sites getting alot of criticism lately across the net among toon fans , and i can see why.

  • 30 robertsa // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:25

toonrmint I want to get cuellar mcgeady and riordan. But we NEED someone like van der vart!!

  • 31 IanG // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:28

Well Emre is a good creative midfielder and we need to hang on to him in my opinion.
In Turkey the premiership matches televised are always Middlesborough and Newcastle even over Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal. This is simply because of Emre and Tuncay. If we are serious about buliding our global brand then we need to bear this in mind provided we can keep him fit and in form.

  • 32 toonarmy08 // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:29

    Spyro-think spurs payed 8 mill 4 woody

  • 33 Eric // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:29

Replace Emre with someone better before we sell him. As for Modric? I think it was as I suggested yesterday. Te whole episode stinks. It seems as though the media diverted our attention away from Spurs by creating a scam to make us think Modric was interested in NUFC. It all smells of media manipulation and a bit of dirty tricks from Spurs and the Croat officials. Bilic let the cat out of the bag by mentioning Spurs. Anyway the player did not want us. Well? Let him watch next season when we are higher than his Londoners.

  • 34 Gooderz // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:30

Maybe we should go for Emre’s compatriot, Nuri Sahin.

  • 35 spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:34

    thanks toon army.

that means so far Spurs have spent:

    Gilberto -2.5
    Hutton - 9
    Woodgate - 8
    Modric - 15.8 with add-ons taking it to 20.5

35.3million already, with the add ons taking it to around 40million. All this and they still claim to want a Centre Back, Midfielder and a Striker. They are definitely going to be the biggest spenders this year, probably spending around the 60million mark.

Man City will probably spend around the same.

We need to start spending big time if we want to keep up with these lot.

  • 36 spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:35

    nuri sahin is class

  • 37 t-g-w // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:40

What criticism of this site Hadrian? I think it’s top notch and everyone else on here seems to think so too. Ed does a fantastic job and a little bit of respect wouldn’t go amiss…

  • 38 jeff // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:45

Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan Riordan
defenitley get him he was mint for hibernian.

  • 39 ToonKing // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:46

something is wrong with that spyro, where from the blue hell would be spurs be getting that kind of money from ???

  • 40 toonarmy08 // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:47

Spyro-they could accumulate alot of that back with the sale of Berbatov ,he will fetch 30 mill. His agent has said he wants champ league football, which he aint going to get there in the near future!

  • 41 robertsa // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:49

uh oh what have i started last month it was arshavin arshavin arshavin arshavin then modric modric modric modric and now riordan riordan riordan riordan riordan. He is good though.

  • 42 wsq // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:52

dun think that’s what he meant

  • 43 jeff // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:53

who is arshavin and who is modric. I only know riordan hope we get him. robertsa im not a freak or out but riordan is mint as im sure you know.

  • 44 robertsa // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:55

wateva jeff i know he is for sale i didnt say toon are defenitley getting him!! but king kev said he will be getting some spl players

  • 45 jeff // Apr 26, 2008 at 12:57

well i have my fingers crossed for riordan to come to tynside

  • 46 Ausgeordie // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:01

Modric seemed made for us and its a shame to see him go to spurs. He obviously didn’t watch the last game we played against them but perhaps them being in UEFA and having a UEFA winning coach makes them a better option for him. He sounded like the sort of quality player we should have made our priority

  • 47 spyro // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:17

i wouldnt be surprised if berba stays now they have signed modric for so much money, it shows they are really pushing for that fourth spot, then again, they wouldnt have spent so much if they werent about to sell berba, i reckon he will go for around 23 mill

  • 48 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:40

    t-g-w
ive been here since the start so dont give me that .
everyones sick of the headlines rehashed and every nufc story reprinted word for word .
it’s machine gun blogging , throw 100 articles out there and see what hits .
id bet ed’s lost alot of readers these past few month

  • 49 CRAIGG // Apr 26, 2008 at 13:47

Plenty more where he came from, Enjoy spurs annual double thrashing by Newcastle next season Luka.

    ————————Given————————
    —Beye——Taylor———Faye—–Bridge—
    -Wright-Phillips–Barton–Veloso–McGeady-
    ———————Owen–Crouch——————-

Subs: Harper, Diatta, Enrique, Emre, Milner, Martins, Viduka

To be honest now i’ve had time to take in the news maybe Modric and Barton would have been too attack minded, Veloso would sit and spread the ball about, While Barton could drive forward and play throughballs plus the pacey wingers and attacking full backs in the above side would give us a real threat down the wide areas as well and create plenty for Chances for our strikers.

  • 50 t-g-w // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:08

So have i hadrian doesn’t make you any better than me. i’m just rrying to stick up for Ed cos he puts a lot of work into this website.

  • 51 Hadrian // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:12

he’s a big boy , he can take the criticism .
i think that was my point , he doesnt put alot of work into this anymore , within 5 mins of a story being up on newsnow , ed’s got it up in print word for word , with the story manipulted to give him a sensational headline , something i expect the sun or star todo , not a site covering the toon .

  • 52 hanzowen // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:28

If if the offers for him go for highest bid then. We’d get some1 better replacement soon. If not & Emre is fit again play him as we’d knew under KK our captain MO is becoming as good as we’d expect when signing him.

  • 53 Galligator // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:30

I agree with those who think this has been taken well out of context.

I wouldn’t sell him for such small figures that are being quoted. he’s not that old for a centre mid, and it would be impossible to buy a replacement for that amount. I’d rather have Emre on the bench for 20 games a season (if his fitness record this season is anything to go by), than 3 million (and 60k a week) in the pocket. surely that peanuts to big mike.

love the site ed, you must put a lot of work in to it, my only criticism would be that there’s too many stories to try and keep up with!

  • 54 WILL // Apr 26, 2008 at 14:59

that is no statement saying he could sell him. it refers to emre being in the euros and there is no point in him staying to train with nufc when keegan just wants to finish the season with the same team, so he may as well train with turkey.

  • 55 Jonny // Apr 26, 2008 at 15:52

i agree with toon army, i think tottenham are already planning for a life without berbatov, lets face it, the amount of times his agent has came out and said stuff about him wanting to leave… either he has a really mouthy agent or somethings going on, i think the spurs fans are just being bought players like modric now to prepare for his loss.

  • 56 Swede1891 // Apr 26, 2008 at 19:46

i dont think kk is that clueless that he sells emre…he´s by far our best midfielder.. he´ll do great for turkey (as usual) in the euros…and for us next season!!

  • 57 Elliott // Apr 27, 2008 at 3:36

What is wrong with you people (well, some of you)? Emre is garbage and if we sold him I doubt any of us would really notice let alone care. What exactly has he contributed to us over the last 3 seasons that makes people think he’s this amazing midfielder?

He scored a belter against the Makems, fair enough and had a fine 15 mins against Everton, but what else, in 3 years?

Dyer, Parker hell even Bowyer were so much more effective.
