News today that Newcastle have failed in their three attempts to sign players for the summer.

Dennis Wise - top man in Newcastle transfer bids
But we have learned that there are some 20 players on the list, which will obviously be prioritized with the best players first. There are probably around four categories of players in that list - center back, left back, central midfielder and striker.
But news that we have failed three times already, at least initially, suggests what Kevin has been saying may be true, that it may be hard for the club right now to attract the very best players.
We’ll have to accept that, and do our best this summer, because it should be easier in January and next summer to attract the very best, when hopefully we are higher in the league and have qualified for European football again.
Kevin said today:
“We’ve earmarked about 20 players,â€
“We’ll be in there pitching for some very good players,” “If you don’t bowl, you can’t knock the wickets down.â€â€œWe might get hit for six, but we might get a wicket.â€
“We’ll get the targets we want hopefully. I’m sure if we had three top class players to what we’ve got and a couple of good youngsters we can look forward to a lot more in front of our fans next year.”
We’re sure this cricket analogy might be puzzling to our American readers, but basically Kevin is saying if we don’t go for good players we will not get them, and sometimes we’ll probably be knocked back big time in the process. But that’s the way it is.
However, courage in the transfer market was never a failing for Kevin Keegan, and we expect the club to attract some very good players in the summer. We’ve got to remain positive on that.
Comments welcome.

You must have. He scored twice against us when we play AZ last year!

5 Eric // Apr 28, 2008 at 12:03
If they want to come have a look at them. Perhaps we should scout down at Accrington Stanley. Gretna may have a few surplus. KK did say that he had several of interest for each position. So he goes for Dunne if Campbell said no already. Cuella not proven in the EPL but may have more quality. So who is the fourth choice for CB. Let’s face it we are down there already if KK’s got 5 on his CB list. Still think the gutter sports press has made some undeserved mud stick to us.

I know that players in Europe know that NUFC is a big club and have heard of us over the years, but if I was a top class European player and Newcastle were showing interest the first thing I would do is check their league position. If we’d have managed to finish in the top 8 we would be in a much stronger position as Europe would seem likely next season. However, we are not even in the top half and this makes things very difficult. I’m pleased that with KK the fans will be a lot more patient with our progression, but being realistic we will probably be looking at next summer before we can bring in any of the players we would like to see pull on the black and white shirt. Best of luck Kev, I’m right behind you all the way mate.
PS: If we can beat Chelsea then that would help us out big time, our form at the moment is very good so I am optomistic.

i think we need 6 quality players. 2 centre halfs, 1 left back, 2 midfielders, 1 forward, my forward would be either david villa, hunterlaar, midfielders i would love to see ronaldinho and then one of either diego or van der vaart. centre halfs dont no who is out there to get, need 2 quality ones though, left back, either bridge, emmanuelson, drenthe. we chance to get richard dunne at centre half, wes brown is so shakey after watching him on saturday. so for me, he;s a no no.

However comes in must have the desire to want to do well for Newcastle Utd.
I don’t care if they see it as a stepping stone to another ‘big’ club - just as long as they are hungry to play, and play well.
I have seen enough of the big time Charlies with there big salaries to match there big ego’s on the quayside!
27 AndyT // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:01
I think Jimmy Bullard would be a great signing, but he wont move up north. If Fulham go down, then expect to see him at West Ham or Pompey.
28 Jim // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:04
We’re going to have to replace N’Zogbia, Carr, Diatta, Rohzenthal, Ameobi & possibly Milner in the Summer, On top of that we need a LB and creative midfielder.
So… we need cover right across the back line, one of which must be a 1st choice CB. We need a RW (1st choice if Milner leaves), 1st choice AM, LW cover. We need a 1st choice commanding striker.
3 (poss. 4) 1st choice, top quality signings.
3 cover youngsters with high hopes.
This, coupled with our Reserve team will see us well in to the top half next season!
Is the 1st really Dunne or is it another false dawn. You think by now we would have waited until he was signed until we regurgitated more garbage.
29 Ross // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:06
Lewis McGugan from Nottingham Forest, A quality midfielder has made a hell of alot of starts for an 18 year old, he’s better than Gilles Barnes thats for sure and we put in a bid for him.
30 Micky Toon // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:15
Wes Brown has been offered a new contract at ManU, so let’s forget about him.
David Villa won’t join us, so forget about him.
Players I can see joining us are Wayne Bridge, David Dunne, Nicky Shorey, Giles Barnes and Leyton Baines. I would love Baines to sign for us, top quality LB.
If none of the top 4 are interested then we could persuade Bently to join us, but he’ll probably go to Liverpool of ManU. Joe Cole is a good outside bet if he doesn’t stay at Chelsea, but don’t be surprised to see him join Arsenal.
I would like to see us end Kenwyne Jones and Nosworthy’s miserable existance at the stadium of plight and sign for us. Both good quality players. If Jones is good enough for Shearer, he’s good enough for me!

I think Rohzehnal could back and be better player for us. I know he requested to move out at difficult times of our club and a bit selfish in that sense but who doesn’t? This is his first season in premiership, and we replace manager half way. He never heard of KK, results do not went our way and he want to make sure he plays in Euro 2008.
I won’t blame him for making the call to go out for loan. He has quality and class. We need to partner him with the right people and teach him the right mentality. At times, he wasn’t aware that premiership is so fast that they can rob the ball off you!
Of the 20 players, I believe at least 20% of them will be top class players. As Ed translated, we won’t get world class players if we don’t even try. We can try and fail, which better than we don’t try and never fail but we won’t get the players too.
Heartbreak is a process of living. How many actually find true love in first try?
33 James // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:34
Henry will be on the list.
As will SWP - KK often remarks that he is one of the best players he has ever worked with.
But like most of them on the list it is going to be hard to persuade them to come to a club that isn’t in Europe.
34 51times // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:34
Our main hope is to look into Europe and maybe even South America. The quality PL players aren’t available for us.
35 Jim // Apr 28, 2008 at 13:41
I mentioned it in another post but at the risk of repeating myself we have tough opponents in the transfer market with Villa, Spurs, Portsmouth, Everton and possibly Man. City if a new manager comes in. I’m not sure about Blackburn and don’t even need to mention the Champions League spots.
I think Villa, Everton, Spurs and Pompey are ahead of us in the transfer market as choices for the easy street’ers and foreigners. They all have good managers, European football and are developing well.
We have (an undefined amount of) money, a good manager with a core of quality players and a vision. I think it’s going to be a hard Summer for Wise and co. but a good last couple of games starting with a win against Chelski can only be of benefit.
Christmas is when we’ll know how things are. If we’re fighting at the top, we’ll attract better quality in January ‘09.
(and there’s a cracking young midfielder on loan to Aberdeen from Birmingham called Sone Aluko. He’s one who’d be a great young buy as attacking striker.

If we get Dunne that would be a good start. I didn’t realise that he’s only 28!
I’d like to see us not offload many players at all, and I don’t think KK intends to. Carr can go, probably Amoebi too (and Rosenzhal). I’d keep Diatta and if we let any other defenders go, probably just Cacapa. Diatta has to be worth at least a one year deal, because he looks strong and his understanding with Beye and Faye should be good.
Then new deals for Owen and Martins and take it from there.

To be honest I don’t think top players want to come to NUFC or Newcastle itself. Either because they are prima donnas with inflated egos and wallets to match. Or they believe all the myths about the northeast and think that the only civilised place in Britain is London.
I think we have the nucleus of a team that can challenge for a European Championship place.
I just do not, once the gutter sports press has bayed to its full moon, see certain players coming here. I still think Wright-Phillips could be a good acquisition and Diatta could contribute a good deal of soidity at the back. We do need cover for right and left back though, just as we need a midfield genius too.
Youngsters? Barnes? Vokes? Baines? Do not think Bridge will come - thinks we have too much coal dust I suppose. Carrick wants Euro glory with Manky Utd so won’t come home. Let’s face I think there is an awful lot of ignorant prjudice out there about Tyneside and the media do all they can to poke their snotty southern noses into what is our NUFC business. We need quality players who will be proud to pull on a black and white shirt. Players who can see further than their aftershave. We want footballers not fairies - the only little people we need are Oba and Owen!

Micky Toon let me try to explain your potty mouth comparisons. You suggest that players for the Toon include, “Bridge, Shorey and Baines” !!!??? How many back-up LBs do we need? Why would we want any of them since we have already passed on them or they already passed on us? A little originality goes a long way on here and I must say that anyone who opens up with “let’s sign Wayne Bridge” makes me browse straight past the rest of their comment.

49 Gooderz // Apr 28, 2008 at 15:13
Yobo and Arteta are regulars for Everton so they arent going to leave, unless we offer very good amounts for them.
But across the Mersey there are a few players that could be available. Riise is obviously one, but also Crouch and Alonso. Of the three Alonso would be a great signing. He’s got the experience, would add a bit of height to the midfield and has the kind of game we currently lack in the centre of the park.

Pointless guessing who it is, I dont think we would get Van der Vaart, Joe Cole etc. Carrick has just signed a new contract. Joe Cole is playing for Chelsea and Van der Vaart will go to Arsenal or something like that.
We need to be realistic now. Don’t get me wrong it’s not impossible, SWP would be nice, Metzelder and Dunne in defence? I wouldnt mind that! Van der Vaart for me is quality but have we been linked with him? No.
Ashton, Crouch or Gudjohnsen are all realistic too i think.

From setanta sports:
“Paris Saint Germain defender Mamadou Sakho has been scouted by Newcastle United as The Magpies compile a lengthy list of potential summer targets.
The Paris-born youngster captained PSG at the tender age of 17, a French record, and has also skippered France Under-17s.
Respected sources claim Newcastle posted representatives at the Coupe de la Ligue final, when Sakho impressed as his side overcame Lens in a dramatic match in front of Setanta Sports cameras, and a return trip to Paris is on the cards.”

Wow, I really didn’t think I’d have to explain every little part of my comments down to the last full stop. DC Magpie, did I mention we sign all of those players? No. However they are realistic targets that we could hope to sign. Or do you really want to have to hope that Enrique is really the finished article and not just a young kid out to impress? So you don’t rate Wayne Bridge, boo hoo, I’m sure I’ll get over it. Look, even Keegan thinks we can’t attract the big names. By all means play fantasy football manager, I don’t want to spoil anyones fun, but also realise that we aren’t the attractive club we used to be back in 97/98.
Be grateful that we have some common sense at the club, instead of the fat controller, because you can bet he would have spunked £25m on the croatian just to show how “big” we are. Thankfully the days of the overpriced, overrated trophy signing are gone and just perhaps we can use the Arsenal model and sign good, up and coming players that have the raw talent we can use to mould them in the NUFC way.
If we are to believe all the hype there is a lot of respect for NUFC from some top players out there, but they aren’t daft and they won’t play for a club who aren’t in europe.
Let’s get a good, solid PL team, finish in the top six, which hopefully will be good enough for europe and then let’s see who we will sign next summer.

70 Taiwantoon // Apr 28, 2008 at 17:50
Same as many on the forum, I agree that some of the names that appeared on the board are less realistic than others. Yet, I will not rule anything out just yet.
It is true that most players wanna to play at the highest level and we can not currently offer it. Can’t argue with it.
But lets face the fact, what are the reasons for the players to wanna to play in the CL? Is it all about honours? I am sure it is not always the case. Footballer is naturally a profession with high risk, you never know where it ends. As a result, players who are more concerned about how much they can earn from the next contract rather than the one after that do exist. My point is easy, just don’t rule us out of anything just because of no Euro footy. Footballers do not always share our dreams of playing in the CL as we have no risk of getting injured next minute and need to change a career.

we have absolutely no chance with some of those players adam - Lampard? i bet a good handful of those are on this list though, i certainly hope so - i just really hope we at least test the water for Diego AND VDV, you cant win the lotto if you dont put a ticket on eh

The reason I personally read these posts and add some myself is that it’s something to do and interesting in the “down time†at work, or if we just don’t have any Toon news at any time – inbetween matches etc. It is anorak corner, yes, but who cares?
The only negative aspect of transfer obsession is that it can deflect from appreciating what we have already. We’ve shown some great qualities the past few weeks and have the nucleus of something really good, so I’m just hoping that we firstly manage to keep the players we currently have happy. Martins is one who is very important, also Owen.
There’s also always some fans who don’t want us to sign certain players, and other players everyone wants. I think we should just have faith in KK and other staff and not cry out “______ (whoever) no!†Just get behind any decision to sign to sign a certain player and have faith.

What does everybody think about crouch? I mean, I know he’s taken a lot of flak but he would play the role viduka has played a million times better than him.
Also… keeping martins is more important that signing any of these players….ed….any chance you want to launch a ‘please stay martins’ campaign on this site? petition etc… go on!

Arshavin is the first player they should get as far as I’m concerned. I rate him higher than Modric, even tho’ they can not be compared.
And then let us go after Gomis, fantastic future!!
Oh yes, yesterday I saw the Blgian programme Studio 1 and Boussoufa was the guest, he told he will sign a new deal this weeek at Anderlecht, so he will not join NUFC, that is good news cause he is overrated.
I think it is funny how all the Belgian players (Kompany, Dembele, Fallaini, …) are all so overrated here at this site. Now I read Dembele would be a fantastic player for NUFC? why because he scored twice last year?? No he is not good enough YET for rhis level. Let him play a few seasons more in the Dutch League and perhaps he will be able to make s step forward, but not now. So please stop this crap.

i’m a Man utd fan.. for me, u already have many fighters in your squad. and now u need to add quality and influential player. I think Bullard, Diego-Werder Bremen, Luis Fabiano, Ben Haim, Sidwell, Chimbonda, of cos creative Van der Vart.. and why not resurrect Pablo Aimar future??? and keep N’Zogbia.. he’s one of ur brightest star

These posts on these threads are getting more annoying buy the day. Ed, you’re gonna have to moderate some of this garbage. I used to love this site but it’s really getting boring due to some of the comments posted.

I dont think this summer will be a complete overhaul so i only expect:
Ins-
McGeady
Dunne
Shorey/bridge/baines
Cuellar (swap)
Outs-
Smith (swap)
Ameobi
Carr
But of course i would love a big striker signed too, maybe crouch/ashton but bent would be my personal choice!

Remember some of the signings we have had in the past that nobody wanted?
Mick Quinn and Craig Bellamy are two that spring to mind. Rob Lee was an average championship player until KK got his hands on him.
If we do sign people who are not world beaters then lets all keep some perspective. Let KK work his magic and see what happens

Wisey drinks in my local. I can’t claim to know him personally, but I’ve seen enough to understand why Mort hired him.
Out there, our transfer team will meet just two types of people: convicted crooks, and crooks they haven’t caught yet. For that you need a no-nonsense, take-na-shite, bulldog of a man. We’ve got one of the best, and I think he will deliver.
Having said that, I don’t think we’re looking at any Decos, Henrys or other headline-makers. More young talent, a couple of proven names, and that’ll be enough to get us to UEFA in 09/10. From there, who knows?
And let’s not forget who we’ve already got. The likes of Barca, Real, Manure and Chelski would kill for one or two of our players. Owen and Martins, for a start.
88 SHEARER // Apr 29, 2008 at 12:13
I dont agree that the top teams would kill for martins or owen. owen couldnt get a game for madrid and the only reason we have him is because nobody else rated him enough to pay his ridiculous wages. Martins is good for us but i think the top teams have better strikers sitting on there benches
89 Andy // Apr 29, 2008 at 19:13
lets face it, we wont get any of the established top drawer players this time, but lets go for the up and comming.. like GOMIS, a great prospect who will complement owen perfectly! and if city falls apart, then why not richards?? he might just find a move interesting
