Ameobi To Stoke For £4M?

Tuesday April 29th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 104 Comments

The Shields Gazette is saying today that if Stoke City win promotion to the Premier league they will shell out £4M for Shola Ameobi.

shola-ameobi_543604.jpg

Shola Ameobi - will go to Stoke City in the summer?

We know that Stoke initially paid Newcastle £750K for the loan deal and are also paying his wages, but Shola has also been on the bench the last two games

Apparently Shola has had more injury problems since he moved to Stoke, and has hardly been worth his £750K loan fee so far, but if this puts Stoke in the driver’s seat to get Shola Ameobi in the summer, it may be worth it for them. And it would be very nice if Shola scores the winning goal in their last game of the season against Leicester City at home - a game which they only have to draw to gain promotion. They will also get promotion if Hull fail to win their game at Ipswich next Sunday.

We expect this is an option Stoke City have if they want to complete the deal, but we know Norwich City and Glenn Roeder will be very interested in taking Shola to the East Anglia club in the summer, so there will definitely be some competition for Shola this summer.

But £4M for Shola is a good deal for Newcastle – a great deal in fact, and if we can also get £6M for Alan Smith from Rangers, that’s another good deal for the club.

Things may be looking up for the summer.

Comments welcome.

Would be nice and gives us some funds to add a young striker (like GOMIS)

  • 2 Bill F // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:24

I saw the highlighted championship games on Sunday morning with quite a lot of the Stoke one being shown and I hardly remember him getting a mention. So if Stoke want him then it is a very good deal for us.

Watch the b*gger go and score against us next year. ;)

  • 3 Slam Dunc // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:24

    Both great deals.

Looks like we’ll use that money to buy the new drogba:

    Gomis for £14 million

  • 4 MattyDread // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:30

We definitely don’t need Ameobi or Smith. If we get a combined fee of anywhere near £10m for those two I’d be well impressed.

Bill F is right tho - Ameobi WILL score against us!

  • 5 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:32

im always skeptical when players are rumoured or claimed to be the new zidane new henry.. if they really are the new someone they’re usually snapped up by the big guns.. like the new maradona in barcelona.

DOn’t really mind ameobi and smith going out, they don’t contribute much to our european and other aspirations. time to move on for them. 4mill is a good value since he only score half the no. of goals oba scores if not less.

GO STOKE! jsut hope he dosn’t score agianst us next season. that’d bea joke

    MOre money for quality players!!

  • 6 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:35

I can’t believe someone is actually going to pay us money for Shola….there is a god.

I’d have happily paid a club to take him off our hands and wage bill.

  • 7 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:35

    anyone for the zarate kid?

  • 8 nightfall // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:37

    i agree…fantastic deals :)

off the topic, but i think we should go after:

    Sakho (DL, DC)
    Dunne or Celluar (DC)
    Toulalan or Vieira (DMC)
    Ribery or Nasri (AMRLC)
    Gomis (ST)

    + maybe Lennon

i know ribery sound a bit unrealistic, but he’s sth every team needs..he’s skillful, got great vision, can pass, can score, can cross, never complaines, fights for every ball, can defend and attack,…so just offer more than any other club…just get him :)

  • 9 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:39

ZARATE nope.. he’s goingn to sulk like n’zogbia and viana.. didn u see he was furious when subbed..

  • 10 JMC // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:39

zarate is good but has a price tag of bout 18mil! not worth that amount!

  • 11 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:41

How about make Blackburn an offer they cannot refuse for Bentley? £25 million should do it.

The amount of goals Owen and Martins would score from Bentley crosses and through balls would be massive.

Just look at how many Santa Cruz has scored this season because of Bentley’s delivery?

  • 12 azim // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:41

ameobi is not worth that much..he is 2m pound player meanwhile smith will only worth4-5m..and we have get rid both of them no matter we are offered low ..they are not the player keegan really want

  • 13 Jimmie // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:42

£10 mil for Smith and Shola would be great! Then sign Gomis or Elmander and we have a good setup of forwards with Owen, Martins, Viduka, Caroll and Gomis/Elmander.

  • 14 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:43

hmm don’t think bently would want to join us.

we seem to be unlucky to be in the wrong place when good english players are looking to move.

  • 15 John // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:45

I would like Bentley james, but jesus christ..Not for 25 million..Id be expecting a Ronaldo for that amount

  • 16 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:46

Ribery? Wake up, players like that don’t come here. Toulalan we might get but Viera? Anyway, I’d like to see us sign…

    Metzelder (CB)
    Bridge (LB)
    Veloso (Creative DM)
    McGeady (left)
    Gomis (targetman)

We’d also need an attacking midfielder (maybe Moutinho if Man U don’t want him) and a right winger though maybe we could use Lua-Lua as back up to Milner next season.

  • 17 KKK // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:48

4M for Ameobi seems fair considering Chopra went to the scum for 5M and big Shola is a proven goal scorer in the premiership.

As for Smith i dont think Rangers could afford his wages but a swap deal with West Ham for Ashton could be possible!?

  • 18 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:49

John - I agree it is a lot of money, but the players worldwide who are worth that right now, would never come here because of lack of european football.

So to fend off Liverpool offers, make Blackburn an insane offer to get him. He is the best crosser of the ball in PL, and to get the best out of Owen’s brilliant late runs into the box we need someone constantly delivering great crosses.

Bently will be England’s right winger for many years, and under KK could become one of the world’s best.

  • 19 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:51

We need pace and can dribble the ball. preferably striker/RW or LW. Ashton doesn’t have this.

  • 20 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:53

    Sell Harper? anyone consider this?

no good having two good keepres.. when u can sacrifice one for better players upfront?

    no?

im not sure what my position is yet. but im leaning towards no.

  • 21 nightfall // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:55

if smith really is a rangers fan he’ll join them for way less then 60k/week..he’s got enough money and playing for a favorite club, even for free, is every player’s dream (in theory.. :D )

  • 22 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:55

Fernando - Harper shouldn’t be sold. He should be paid loads for his loyalty. He has been an absolute superstar in terms of attitude over the last 14 years.

  • 23 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:57

player to sell= milner 7 mill to villa, roz- 2mill, smith5 mill, ameobi 4mill, le sulk 9 mill, carr free, id say we could rake in about 25 million.

im with hammas on most signings except mcgeady, would rather arshavin.

as for jeremy toulalon, cant see it. he is the best at the job he does, i think veloso would be a very good bet.

we need a very good free-kick taker, dunne/metzelder at the back, either add height for set pieces, and especially gomis. ribery definatley a great player but would never come.

we need some more foriegn influence. that is where we have been going wrong, we always try for young english players, bentley is class but one of the biggest dickheads going. and we definatley shouldnt sign giles barnes

  • 24 toonarmy08 // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:58

guys -how good is this gomis fella ,they lable him the new drogba.dont know anything about this guy.Anyone??

  • 25 tdt // Apr 29, 2008 at 13:58

many people think we dont have much pulling power in the world market, but this is what I have to say to that… Owen - superstar, worldclass, bought from Madrid, regular england player, £17M. martins - worldclass, bought from Inter, Tons of £££, regular starter and scorer for Nigeria, big4 want im. Emre - turkish legend, touted as one of, if not the best ever Turk to grace the football field, plays every game possible for turkey. Given, Viduka, Butt, Geremi, Taylor, Smith, Beye, Faye, the list goes on, stars for their contries at all levels, we have the pedigree, we only need it to be expressed fully, which KK is doing. A few, or even a couple, of big players will make us a formidable force next season, then once we’re big in europe next summer, buy the super super star names and become great again… :)

  • 26 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:02

Geordie Gerrard - I agree, Bentley is a dickhead, but in terms of the type of footballer we need he is perfect. Best crosser in the PL, and a terrific free kick taker.

We’re supposed to have bid for him in Jan for £10 million, and I’m still convinced he’s on the list.

As a person I’m not really a fan. But in terms of how many goals Owen and Martins would score because of Bently’s delivery, I’d gladly welcome him to the toon

  • 27 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:02

We don’t need to sell to buy.

Also I’m not too sure on McGeady myself, but he does have a bit of flair.

  • 28 nightfall // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:02

as for ribery…he’s 24 (i think) and he already played for 10 clubs…i don’t know what he’s seeking, but we might have it…

  • 29 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:09

    Recent past year trends.

These are type of players that come to newcastle:

    i)Twilight players (u know who they’re)
ii)Reserve players at top 4 clubs in england or italy wherever
    iii)Bad boy
iv)Good boy signed for wrong club need games for International place.

Anymore? souness started this.. oops actually.. it started when we signed carr.. what did bobby ever see in him

  • 30 briss // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:09

aie, we’ll probably end up selling for 4.5 mil for shola but 4 is still ok. we could get 3-4 youngsters for that price! if we could get rid of smith too that would be a dream but i doubt we’ll get 6. no matter what the print says today

  • 31 Faustino // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:10

    re; selling harper

I think it’s been quite clearly shown over the last 3 years that we DO need 2 world class keepers; as Arsenal, Chelsea etc. would also atestify!

Ribery will go to Chelsea or Arsenal this close season mark my words.

also you’d be lucky to get Ronaldo for 50mil at the mo. never mind 25.

  • 32 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:12

so if we can break our past trends our.. i’d be happy. signing modric would have broken that mould or trend

  • 33 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:14

yes bentley is has the best vision and best passer of a football in the premiership, he just really annoys me, in january i really wanted us to sign him, im pretty sure he is on the list. we need bentley and arshavin with a dm and an am. big target man up top like gomis, who i would say looks like we could well seal a deal.

  • 34 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:24

    how is this possible?

Sakho now has a buy out clause of 23 million euros.

and apparently we are tracking him.

    jeepers creepers…

  • 35 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:28

Fernando - A bit late aren’t you, that was reported yesterday.

  • 36 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:29

lol- jeepers creepers. great word. made me chuckle

  • 37 nasher // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:31

    Four million towards gudjohnson anyone?

  • 38 steve // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:33

Roeders already publicly said that Ameobi is only worth about 2 million and that Stoke are paying way over the odds.

Will be surprised (although overjoyed) if we manage to persuade Stoke to part with 4 million for him, especially as he’s hardly set the world alight in his time on loan there

  • 39 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:34

i didn comment on it yesterday.. but found out about the clause then just had to mention it.

  • 40 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:36

Yeah. While I hear he’s very good, I don’t think he’s worth his buy-out clause. Not yet anyway.

  • 41 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:38

would be ecstatic if we get gomis.. he’s a first team player.. for once we are signing a first team player

  • 42 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:41

what you mean fernando? for once were signing a first teamer

  • 43 Leo // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:47

good deals really. 4mil for shola is a great price.

hear is my amended list because it changed daily haha

Sakho (if its true that he plays both left back and centre back)
    Cuellar
    Veloso
    Arshavin
    Gomis

if we could get either mcgeady or lennon as well that would leave us with great options all over the pitch lots of pace and good passing ability.

  • 44 ScottyT // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:48

4m for shola is mint! hes on his way and tbh anything over 1.5m is a good price for us. smith if we could get 4-6m would also be a gr8 but i doubt he’ll be leaving unless we sign another striker. hopefully we sign this gomis who if hes anywhere near as good as adebayor or drogba we would have an outstanding player.

  • 45 Mr T // Apr 29, 2008 at 14:50

Ameobi’s injured again which is PART of the reason he’s doing nothing, the other is that he’s an altogether useless twit!

I’d love Bentley, but the £25m would be a bit pricey when he’s not considerably better than other midfielders we have. Like anyone, if the price is right, do it….but £25M for Bentley is not cool.

  • 46 Midjew // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:00

    Ha ha are you joking?

Bently is better than ALL Our MD

And would fit into arsenal, liverpool or chelsea

    so why not here??

    but 25m??? Mmmmmmmmm BIT STEEP.

Could get ronaldinho cheaper than that ha ha

  • 47 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:08

I read that Ronaldinho’s price is £30m. Not sure where Milan will get the money for him…likely why they want to sell Kaka for £55m.

  • 50 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:15

    We need :

    - Proven PL class
    - Great Crosser
    - Free Kick Specialist
    - Young enough to develop

Bentley ticks all boxes and unlike the Modrics and Diegos of this world, we can actually get Bentley if we bid big enough. Our £10 million in Jan was refused for being too small. So up the ante Wise and get him to the toon.

KK could sell the toon to anyone

  • 51 Knightbobmoncur // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:45

  • 55 Gooderz // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:48

Barca won’t get £30m for Ronaldinho, unless he agrees to go to Man City. He seems set on Milan and he can easily buy out his contract for about £16m, so selling Kaka isn’t necessary. Besides they’ll be building around him, Pirlo, Nesta, Pato and maybe Flamini.

  • 56 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:55

Hands up who think we will end up with Fazackerley again now Svens getting the bullet.

  • 57 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 15:57

On Man City Dunne, Richards, Ball, Petrov, Fernandes and Elano would be good signings.

    As would SWP and Ashton.

  • 58 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:04

Craigg - Michael Johnson is supposed to be on KK’s list as well.

  • 59 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:07

james- how u know that? no one noes who is on that list.

  • 60 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:10

“Sources” reported it in one of the papers. Could be nonsense I know. But he is the type of player KK would like

  • 61 Viper // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:11

Having skipped briefly though blog, my thoughts are…
    Are we stilla buying-selling club?
Yip, currently we need to do both, but for how long? KK for good stay with known, and choice players!

  • 62 James // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:15

Viper - I think KK will try and hold onto as many players as possible because he’s complained about how small our squad is. Only the really bad will be allowed to leave (Carr, Smith, Rozenhal, Cacapa, Shola)

  • 63 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:17

Yes Johnson looks a classy young un too, To be honest i was expecting to be slagged off for Suggesting Ball but as a back up to Enrique he may be a decent signing.

  • 64 scottish mag // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:32

with milan to pull out of ronaldinho deal and sven to leave city, so they wont go for him either we should defo put in a bid of £30m and offer £200,000 a week wages( wot milan offered)

  • 65 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:36

We are ready to bid £14m for Gomis when we could sign Wright-Phillips and Dunne for apparently cheaper

    Pathetic

  • 66 Midjew // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:39

Why not go for all 3 Craigg???

I think they would all be needed.

  • 67 Tom_Toon // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:40

Gomis is worth 8 million tops.

  • 68 Midjew // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:40

    ——Martins——Gomes—-

    Looks good to me

  • 69 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:53

Miralem Sulejmani? he looks a good player, and at 19, 16 goals and 11 assists is a great feat. heerenveen are reportedly willing to accept bids of around 8 million.

  • 70 OzZyMagpiE // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:00

if we bring in wingers we’re gonna be playin diamond with owen as an attackin mid??… hmm. Midjew ur team is cool replace milner with mcgeady or even arshavin. SWP n all are flair players can’t expect them to be playin too central..

  • 71 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:00

Yes youre right we could go for all three and we need a fair few players but i would go for Ashton or Crouch over Gomis

  • 72 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:04

Im so annoyed, spurs are paying for Modric in installments over 4 years

Why didnt we just give them £20m in Cash and be done with it, weve lost out on a cracking player to a club that cant afford him its a joke.

  • 73 OzZyMagpiE // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:09

craig i reckon we shud go for gomis merely coz hez not a finished article.. All we’ve got in here are finished articles lik duff, smith, duke well mostly all of em… we shud try out for this kid. He might just surprise us…. rather than a ashton like playa

  • 74 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:24

Yes maybe but im just not overwhelmed by him when ive watched him, As Tom_Toon pointed out earlier that Gomis misses so many chances and his scoring record is hardly impressive

I wouldnt say that Ashton is the finished article either he can improve with KK coaching him as well as training with top class CFs like Owen and Viduka he could be the next Shearer.

Crouch is someone who i ridiculed a couple of years back but the improvement is amazing, I think if he starts more often than not the youre guarenteed 15-20 goals minimum a season, Similar to Defoe who now with regular starts is banging them in.

If portsmouth sign Crouch then they will score for fun with him and Defoe together.

  • 75 Punk Skunk // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:25

Well, on the modric to spuds thing: another season like this one for them, after buying players they can’t afford, they must be in the red, & they’ll be heading the way of leeds!..
…They’ve spent millions in recent years for little or no return!..

  • 76 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:33

Comparing West Ham sh*te to Shearer actually offends me.

  • 77 toonarmy08 // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:36

    midjew-liking that team mate
swp would be really popular i think at sjp, with how direct and quick he is.Only prob with him imo is sometimes his final ball isnt good enough. Now there seems to be unrest at man shitty with sven geeting boot ,i think we will get Dunne (if he’s a gen target). How about elano boys???technically very sound player ,creative excellent passer ,with an eye 4 a goal.Need someone to fill me in on Gomis ,not really heard of him, except he’s labelled the”the new drogba”.

  • 78 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:40

Well watch his hold up play and aerial ability he reminds me of Shearer and would be an amazing player for the club much better than Gomis.

  • 79 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:50

As I’ve said I think he’s average. If we do sign him I hope to be proven wrong.

  • 80 Leo // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:03

do you lot know what worries me, when someone says gomis is going to be the next drogba, or when someone says such comments, because i just think about the fact that it might be the club who started this so that it ups their value.

we all know how much people take in what someone has said when they emphasise it, such as couple months ago i had not heard of gomis but as soon as someone said we shud sign him etc etc hes like drogba i looked on youtube and instantly thought YEAH

but if i had not had this outside influence i might have thought otherwise???

  • 81 m. // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:13

if this happens, it will be the best transfer deal we’ve ever done since that 16M pounds for Wor Al 12 years ago.

  • 82 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:14

Leo - Of course, you’re right. But he does look like that type of player, he just needs to play in a higher quality league with higher quality players so he developes better.

  • 83 ende // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:44

    4mil for shola? DEAL!

“Well, on the modric to spuds thing: another season like this one for them, after buying players they can’t afford, they must be in the red, & they’ll be heading the way of leeds!..
…They’ve spent millions in recent years for little or no return!..”

Would be a good time to pick off some of their expensive investments like Modric when they get relegated then eh?

  • 84 Andy1 // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:49

I’ve always thought we should be looking to sign Crouch or Ashton to challenge Viduka role. But, if we signed someone with the pace and power of Gomis the attack could be frightening. Having another player with pace alongside Martins means one can drop deep and the other stretch the play.

  • 85 Taiwantoon // Apr 29, 2008 at 19:18

    4 million?

    Aren’t we ove opmistic?

  • 86 kk // Apr 29, 2008 at 19:24

Fernando wwithout harps we would have went down

If another pacey striker is brought in (with height too) then defences could be pulled apart by him and Martins without them necessarily providing a threat, as it would just leave even more space for Owen and co.

I hope that the Gomis rumour is so true. He is young and is very good; I’ve seen him a couple of times at Belgian television and he always impressed me.

I hope that the Arshavin rumour starts again too, cause if I had to choose between Modric and Arshavin to join NUFC, I would always choose for Arshavin. I think it is now that we have to go for him. On the other hand the rumours last January how much truth was in it???

I’d like something like this set up for the future.

    ………………………….Harper
    Dunne/???…Taylor/Edgar..
    Beye/??????. Bridge/Enrique
    Faye/Butt
    SWP/Barton………Menez/Owen..Duff/????
    ……….Martins/Gomis….Crouch

  • 100 Hadji // Apr 30, 2008 at 9:37

    Wow…Compare this:
    Ameobi(4mill) vs Santa Cruz(4.5mill)

  • 101 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 30, 2008 at 9:41

hadji- it was 3.5 for santa cruz. haha. its coz shola is english and we all know what that means in the transfer market

  • 102 Hadji // Apr 30, 2008 at 9:59

    Oops :-)

  • 103 StevieD // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:05

I really feel for Stoke if they think Ameobi is worth £4 - but hey, I’d snap their hands off. Does this mean we can now afford Messi? ;-)

  • 104 Lawman // May 1, 2008 at 0:26

£4m for Amiobi???? Is that how much Stoke is asking FROM NUFC for them to take Shola off our hands??? Give it to them…. £4m to offload Shola is a bargain!!!!!

What? Stoke’s giving US £4m???? This is better than winning the lottery.
