Edgar To Bulk Up For Success At Newcastle

Tuesday April 29th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 48 Comments

Newcastle United’s 20 year-old Canadian defender, David Edgar, knows he will have to get much bigger if he is to compete in the Premier League.

david-edgar-12345.jpg

David Edgar - only 154lbs in weight but 6′2″ tall

David has been at the club since 2003 and has graduated through Newcastle’s academy and he is a good bet to make it into the Newcastle first team in the next couple of seasons. Certainly in his two starts recently, he has looked the part after the first few nervous minutes of each game.

But at 6’2” he is listed at just 11 stones and 0 lbs in weight (154 lbs), and he knows he’ll need to get a lot bigger and stronger to compete in the English Premier League.

Steven Taylor is also 6′2″ but is listed at 12 stones and 11 pounds by the club (179lbs), and that’s a full 25 lbs heavier than David.

A summer regimen of yorkshire pudding and black pudding is what the youngster needs - and hey - eat some of those rice puddings the chef at Newcastle’s training ground is serving up especially for Habib Beye - who apparently cannot get enough of them. :D

Some of our readers noticed how slim David was when he started in place of Steven Taylor against Reading, and the Canadian center-back was given a tough test by West Ham’s big England striker Dean Ashton (6′2″ and listed at 192 lbs) last Saturday, at Upton Park.

But David has an excellent temperament and a great character, and of course his father Eddie was a goalkeeper at Newcastle, with just a single appearance in the FA Cup in 1976.

Edgar hopes he can build on that experience on Saturday as he told BBC Radio Newcastle today:

“I’m playing against England internationals who are big strong lads,”

“I’ve got to get bigger and be able to compete with them, but it’s a learning curve and I’m excited to be playing.”

Well it’s not a hard thing to bulk up, and we’re sure we’ll see him at least 14 lbs heavier at the start of next season. We would really like to see David make it at Newcastle, and we expect the club to put him on some kind of high protein diet in the summer.

He can play well anywhere across the back four and he is so committed to the club, he will never let the side down. David has so far made 10 appearances for Newcastle and hopefully there will be a lot more to come.

David - enjoy all those puddings (yorkshire, black and rice). :D

Comments welcome.

I thought he was one of the shinning lights last season when we had so many injuries. Really pleased KK has promoted him to the first team squad and is giving him a chance to prove himself.

    A great prospect

  • 2 DC Toon // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:10

Ever since his goal again ManU, I have been a fan of the lad. I really think NUFC are better off with young, flexible players like Edgar paired with superstars. We need to get past recruiting formerly great players on the downside of the careers to fill the bench. Edgar can fill-in all four positions and gives the team good flexibility. I would take Edgar over Cacapa any day of the week.

  • 3 Hadji // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:15

Too bad Bramble is not here anymore,he could have solved his weight problems.:-)

  • 4 zhun // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:20

anybody has the video clip of his goal agaisnt man utd?
    I just kinda miss it!

  • 5 Mr T // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:26

Maybe that’s why he’s so slim, maybe he was partnered with brambles in the reserves, and mopping up all his errors is gonna keep anybody’s weight down!!

Hunty and Edgar were both excellent prospects, shame Hunty left for Leeds imo.

Still, I think we can expect to see Johnny Howson @ Newcastle sometime soon, he looks class - my best mate’s a leeds fan so I’ve been a few times, be an excellent investment.

I don’t think Edgar needs to put on too much weight though cos as a consequence he’s going to lose some pace.

  • 6 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:30

I was gutted when Huntington left as well he was class when he played CB

I will be more gutted though if Rambo leaves this summer he is so misjudged on this blog watch him at CB and sometimes at RB and he is good believe me.

  • 7 Terry // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:43

I thought it was part of Edgar’s game to be a bit slimmer and more mobile, but then again he only has to look at someone like Micah Richards to see a young, professional defender who’s built like a wall of muscle and has both amazing acceleration, pace and strength.

  • 8 Tripp // Apr 29, 2008 at 16:44

No disrespect lads, but I’d find it hard to gain weight on English food too. :p

Seriously though, he’s a wee’un. I’m 11 stone 9 lbs and I’m only 5′ 9″. With the right training though, he shouldn’t really loose much pace. Look at the track sprinters like Michael Johnson. Fast as lightning and pretty ripped up. They’re certainly not twigs.

  • 9 Punk Skunk // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:03

Yea, but sprinters have explosive pace, they can’t track attackers/midfielders for a 100 mins a game!..
…Putting on too much weight/muscle slowed Shearer down & Owen, glad he’s got rid of a bit of that muscle now (Owen)…
…Also, too much muscle contributes to a lot of injuries, specially calf & thigh!..

  • 10 NUFCFAN // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:04

maybe we could give michah richards another shot if sven leaves - we look in better shape than they do at the moment - and better to spend big money on a defender who is going to be there for at least another 10 years

  • 11 Punk Skunk // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:09

Y’could ‘look’ at ‘english food’ & put weight on, it’s all stodge…About 60% of people are blerters!..

  • 12 Punk Skunk // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:11

Did KK coach Richards whence at citeh?..

  • 13 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:17

I dont think so he would have been in the youth team at the time but if we sign SWP and Dunne who are his mates to go with Barton who he was mates with as well then…

  • 14 Spyro // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:23

Craigg i agree with you about Huntington, but dont you feel Dunne has been poor since Micah has been injured? I feel it is a gamble going after Dunne.

  • 15 Punk Skunk // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:27

    Mmm!..

  • 16 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:29

I just think that Dunne is a quality CB yes his form has dipped but isnt that like saying we dont want Elano as he has lost a bit of form too?

  • 17 Spyro // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:35

fair enough. By the way, elano’s form has picked up again lately. It is just the rest of the team that are still crap.

DeRidder wants to leave Birmingham as he aint playing. I do not know why Birmingham do not play him, he is a highly rated dutch youth and was good for them. We should take him

  • 18 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:44

Yes i saw De Ridder for Ajax when he was younger and he looked good, I would love SWP though can De Ridder play wide left?

If so we could buy both.

Richards and Elano may be available when Sven leaves as apparently a load of their players are annoyed and are threatening to leave

  • 19 Hamas (51times) // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:53

Hope he does get sacked now then…I’d love Richards to come.

  • 20 Leo // Apr 29, 2008 at 17:53

nah putting weight on in muscle will not slow him down too much, as long as he does it gradually. imagine putting a bag weighing 15lbs around your weist and running, it wud be harder and you would be slower, instead gradually upping weight he will not notice it at all

good luck to him, ive got some good tricks to up the muscles, and ofcourse they do not involve sneeky underhand tactics like drugs…

did anyone see the program called “the man whos arms exploded”? absolutely grose he took too many steriods was disgusting, try typing it into google see if it comes up

  • 21 Luke // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:07

I’m 6 foot 6, 16 stone and somehow still slim. I just don’t get it.

  • 22 Ed Harrison // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:14

Luke - you must be one of the lucky guys.

  • 23 NUFCFAN // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:15

re: spyro - is the the dutch lad who went this season to the brum? He was quite highly coverted wasnt he - how did he end up there?

  • 24 Spyro // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:19

NUFCFAN, he started well but then they just dropped him out of the blue, weird eh. i think he can play both sides Craigg. but i am not sure, i am trying to remember a time when i have seen him on the left. What do you guys think of the Sakho situation? think he is worth that much?

  • 25 CRAIGG // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:25

I dont know ive never seen the lad TBH i would like Bridge at left back as he is a good foil for Beye both attacking full backs wouldnt mind Shorey or Baines either.

I dont think people should be as impressed with Sakho captaining PSG as they are, They are in the relegation zone and are s bad as they have ever been to my recollection.

De Ridder went to Brum on a free after Celta Vigo were relegated i think

  • 26 NUFCFAN // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:58

    Spyro

i would pay big dollar for Sakho, worth every penny. Makes a statement of intent and is going to be quality. Means we have almost got a back four ready to come into place in the next few years

  • 27 ToonDaft // Apr 29, 2008 at 18:59

Edgar is gonna be an amazing prospect imo - get Dunne in, SWP and then make a cheeky attempt for Micah - gotta be worth a shot eh?

  • 28 Hadji // Apr 29, 2008 at 19:34

Leo…I’m 6′1 and 230 pounds, for someone with my height would look really fat which is not in my case cause i’m thick set.
All he needs is some good proteins and 50 push ups a day.

  • 29 scottish mag // Apr 29, 2008 at 20:38

deco is looking good tonight might put a wee 8m bid in cos that is wot barca paid i think and he is getting older. some good strike and his passing has been genious, loved the littile chip over the top of the manure defence, although etoo messed it up

cmon BARCA woop woop woop as neg would say

  • 30 Scott H11 // Apr 29, 2008 at 21:27

Its a difficult question, weight gain training or strength training? I look at John Terry and Woodgate and their not really muscular. I do know Edgar is hitting the weights but you can be strong in the upper body without adding too much muscle. All credit to the kid by the way, straight back to training, no sitting licking his wounds, true professional.

  • 31 Tom_Toon // Apr 29, 2008 at 21:35

    Im 3ft 11 and 26 stone.

On a different note. Joe Ledley.

    I like De Ridder too.

  • 32 shearer4pm // Apr 29, 2008 at 21:43

i watched huntington play for leeds earlier in the season

    was rubbish

although i feel that david shud bulk up
ideally he shud become the size of fat andy reid, he is in the peak of his physical prime,

    the perfect footbalers body:)

  • 33 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 21:52

henry is wasted in barca.. he just stands there! wtf.

no one takes care of david’s diet is it?
but he’s still 20 right? so it’s fine.

  • 34 Leo // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:08

well im just under 6 foot, i used to do weight lifting but that was shit because no1 could keep up with me ;-) so i had to constantly change my training partners

i have something in my metabolism that allows me to put about a stone on in no time, then take it back off in just as little time

get him to do some weights in the gym then make him play some 5 a side footy because he will improve weight but remain fast

actually what am i going on about i hope he doesnt listen to any of this because there are soo many fitness experts at nufc that know much more about it lmao

  • 35 Spyro // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:12

i agree fernando, Barca desperately need a support striker. Henry does nothing but stand still. Eto’o is awful compared to what he used to be, and he cant pass for s**t! However, after seeing both Ronaldo and messi in both legs i have no doubt that Messi is much better at beating players than Ronaldo. Ronaldo does all the fancy crap but in the end just resorts to knocking the ball far and using his pace. The way Messi beats players is magnificent. It doesnt matter how fast or strong the player is he still beats them with ease. for me, he is the best. Performs no matter what type of game, big or small.

  • 36 Leo // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:13

tom_toon ur such a joker, ur surely not 3 foot 11 and 26 stone, i remember you saying you were a good badminton player lol…

  • 37 Spyro // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:14

why is everyone talking about their size and weight?

    im 5,8 12stone

  • 38 Tom_Toon // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:19

    8 inches.

  • 39 Fernando // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:21

    why is everyone using stones?

    goodness us kg!!

i think frank rijkard wont be there come nex season.. maybe mourinho will step in

  • 40 Leo // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:26

stones is the right way to state your weight in england

  • 41 Obafan // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:27

Could it be possible to go after Richards now that Sven is going to get the sack. I really don’t understand things at City, they played a descent season, one of the best I can remember and then they are going to sack their manager. I hope we can benefit from it and if I could choose 2 players from their team I would go for:
Richards (miles better than Dunne, who indeed like mentionned is not that good if Richards is injured)
Petrov (powerfull, lots of pace, great shot, good technique)

  • 42 shearer4pm // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:34

elano too im thinkin, micheal johnson, richards dunne, all good players

    im thinkin

    given
    beye,richards,taylor,bridge/enrique
    johnson,barton/butt, noble
    elano
    owen
    martins/viduka

would cost no more than 55m tops
    15m richards
    10m elano
    10m noble
    10m johnson
    10m elano

keeps the majority of the team english, and an 5-10 years we’ll have the 2 english frst choice centerbacks and proob centre midfirlders too

follow my plan kevin it cant fail lmao

    what dya think lads??????????????

  • 43 shearer4pm // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:39

    plus with these out goings

    smith 6m
    ameobi 4m
    rozenal 3m
    nzogbia 7m (19m for spurs)
    duff 3m

23m we wouldnt need to spend more than 32m for a new look team that i feel would be amazing in a few years, and worth it now

  • 44 Tom_Toon // Apr 29, 2008 at 22:45

    Joe Ledley - 3 mil.

  • 45 Oba 9 // Apr 29, 2008 at 23:15

dunne cuellar shorey johnson and ashton the names i am reading in the papers would those players take us to the next level in my opinion they would not make to much of a difference to the players we have got here we should be aiming for top class players.
dunne is good when in form but is ahuge liability
out of those names i would say ashton be our best bet
if johnson is the prolific scorer people say he is then why is it he rarely scores a goal other than the odd penalty
cuellar is a decent player but is he any better than taylor or faye
shorey is again a decent player but why sign him and hinder enriques progress

  • 46 sas1 // Apr 30, 2008 at 1:22

Viduka should toughen up Edgar the way Shearer did with Taylor

  • 47 Mr T // Apr 30, 2008 at 10:43

What, you gonna let Viduka put Edgar on the Parmo’s?!?!

Johnny Howson lads I tell you, with Wise and his Leeds connections, alas I doubt we’ll re-sign Hunty :-(.

In Other news: Titus Bramble is still a C***unt

    AND YOU’LL ALWAYS BE, A C**T!

    (To ‘never walk alone’)

  • 48 Scott H11 // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:46

Edgar’s dad Eddie has connections with www.morganspowerhousegym.co.uk, the owner is an IFBB Pro bodybuilder called Ian Morgan who is 6ft 2ins and weighs 20st 4lbs with almost zero fat, If he pops along I’m sure Ian will put some upper body mass on him. I hope you dont mind me posting the link just theres pictures and several articles about David on the site
