Newcastle Transfer News Today

April 30th, 2008 · 91 Comments

We will be linked with many players this summer so it’s going to be a little hard to single out which ones we are really after, but we’ll do our best.

richard-dunne.jpg

Richard Dunne - definite target for Newcastle

The Manchester City captain Richard Dunne is again the name dominating the transfer news regarding Newcastle United. And with Sven Eriksson leaving Man City in the summer, it may be a chance for Newcastle to get Richard to the club.

It’s the Northern Echo that says Keegan is ready right now to go after Dunne, and we believe Newcastle have already officially put in a bid of £5M, which is a good price for City, given Richard’s contract is up next season.

aiden-mcgeady-6.jpg

Aiden McGeady, the Celtic winger, who was the Scottish Premier League’s player of the year, is also mentioned as a a target and apparently Sunderland are also said to be interested in the player.

McGeady is rated at £10M, which seems a little on the high side to us.

The Daily Mail also mentions PSG’s 18 year-old Mamadou Sakho, who is a left sided defender, as another target. We covered our interest in Mamadou recently.

That’s about it for today so nothing really new on the horizon.

Comments welcome.

No huntelaar or van der vaart? :(

  • 2 adam // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:19

we should try and get micah richards instead. worth a try. i dont care if he signed a new contract. he mite be pissed of that sven is leaving

  • 3 Rich // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:20

Id be happy with all 3 of these players at Newcastle, I think 10million for Mcgeady is about right, hes a better player than Zog for sure with a much better attitude to the game! Add Bridge, Gomis and a Creative Midfielder and we would be all set!

  • 4 Graeme // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:21

Just 2 of the hundreds we will no doubt be linked to over the next four months, right up to the transfer closing day.

So will be genuine targets, most will be pure fiction, one or two will be completely out of left field; maybe even one or two will take our breath away. Oh, the joys of supporting this bloody club eh!!!!!!

  • 5 Spyro // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:23

10million for McGeady is about right. Spurs are also after him by the way, lol.

Dunne i could do without, but Sakho is a definite buy if we can get him for around 13million

  • 6 african-kenyan-ronniezog // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:23

magpie have suffered for long for lack of a defensive midfielder and since butt is on and off hence unpredictable we should look for a constant performer.

  • 7 Spyro // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:25

we should look to either snatch Flamini from under the noses of the italians, or bid anything up to 20million for Veloso. Both can act as the engine to our team as they are both class and have excellent workrate. Flamini is better but i think we have more chance of Veloso

  • 8 Rich // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:26

I think we are ok for DM - Butt and Fatye if we buy both these centre backs!

  • 9 adam // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:26

i would like to see arteta at newcastle

  • 10 Spyro // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:28

Rich, both are getting old, Also, neither has good enough passing ability and the days of a DM who cant pass are long gone

  • 11 Gunnar/Iceland // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:29

F-ing spurs are after McGeady too. Dunne, McGeady and Sakho would all be good signings that would improve the team.

  • 12 Spyro // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:29

Adam, Arteta is inconsistent and a moaner. He would most probably want to return to Spain now anyway.

  • 13 Graeme // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:34

Some creativity is long overdue in this team. Emre is a shadow of his former self; Zog is up his own backside. Who else do we have, really??

Lets get back to the days of Jimmy Smith, Asprilla, Beardsley, etc. Players who could open up a team, take on their man and stuff him, create openings and chances for our forwards to put in the net.

Get some FOOTBALLERS on the pitch and ignite the fans.

  • 14 adam // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:36

i would love it if tottenham were the next leeds. cant stand the bastards!!!

  • 15 Kash2 // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:36

@Spyro: How you getting on in FM? I bet you’ve got some team assembled?! Pity that the actual team will ever look like your fantasy team!

Get a f**king grip people. Van DEr Vaart, Huntelaar, Veloso, Micah Richards etc etc etc. If they’re top players they’re not coming to us. If Modric signed for Spurs then why would any of the other players sign for us?

Dunne would be a good signing and he’s probably the best CB we can get. And to be honest, he’s a good player, very solid! I like McGeady, and there’s a good chance we’ll sign him if he decides to leave Celtic. But what are the chances of him leaving when Celtic will be in CL again? There’s no chance Arteta would leave Everton to come to us!

And £13m for Sakho? Are you joking?!!!!!!!!!

  • 16 dick // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:37

toon will only get players spurs dont want,to many connections between clubs. ashley and the spurs owner best mates ,wise and poyet mates, tony jimerez and jeff vetere ex spurs

  • 17 Eric // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:39

KK’s list is beginning to resemble the Ipcress File. It does seem that Dunne will be the done thing now that Sven has got his P45. I like Micah Richards too but not sure where he would fit. I suppose we will have fairy story after fairy story until deadline day. OK, but we will have to recruit, and recruit quality. No more hand-me-downs or cast offs please. We also need to know who is going as well. That will say a lot about what positions KK is concerned about. Shola will go, and perhaps Smith, even Carr to Everton so he can play in Europe without having done naff-all for us. Smith at Rangers will play in Europe too having never scored for us. Still would like Wright-Phillips with us but what about Kazenga being given a chance too?

  • 18 adam // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:39

    i hope your wrong kash2

  • 19 Jimmie // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:42

If we could get Michael Owen sign for us, then why shouldnt we be abel to sign Huntelaar and Van der Vaart? Owen signed even though we had a crapy manager as Souness and now when we have Keegan and it looks like we are going places… why not?

  • 20 Whumpie // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:43

I think it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing any senior, expensive foreign players with no prem experience. For one thing, they won’t want to come here without European competition, and for another I don’t think KK wants them.

I’d be far happier to see us go for young foreign talent (like Sakho) for the future, and established, UK-based immediate 1st teamers like McGeady. Dunne could be the consistent boss at the back, which is needed.

  • 21 Hammy // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:43

Dunne would be nuts to stay at Man Shitty with that Asian guy at the helm, Man Shitty are not going to win anything anytime soon and Sven’s gonna be a gonna in a couple of weeks.
    Dunne’s solid if nothing else.

  • 22 Leo // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:45

dont look to much into the whole newcastle/ashley spurs connections, it will only make you bitter towards him, they offered way to much for modric, ive got over it, you should all do now, look to the future. sakho dunne and mcgeady would all be good signings. veloso would be the player i would go out for whole heartedly along with pandev/elmander/gomis

  • 23 tdt // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:45

well now spurrs have loads of players in AM role, who is gona go there with too much competition? lets hope spurrs = leeds… and manure, chelski and arsenal = Forest… then we myt win the league this next year! if not, i’m afraid we’ll just av2 w8 til the following year :)

  • 24 Eric // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:48

Graeme has summed it up well and Dick has made a very interesting point worth considering.
It seems the media is trying to make Newcastle appear as some shanty town on the wrong side of the railway tracks. We want and need quality creative players, especially on the wings and in mid-field. But above all they must have passion for NUFC and the Toon Army - if they have not got that it does not matter who they play for as long as it is not us. Still have that gut feeling that we will be shafted many time before we finally see next season’s squad. KK will sort it though and that we do know. What we can offer is what we can fight and play for, to go out and win. Too many of todays players want it on a plate. They want to sign for clubs that have made it to Europe etc without having actually helped those clubs get there. I think opportunists and selfish careerists are the words, not quite sure.

  • 25 Whumpie // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:50

Jimmie - Owen signed for us because we were the only club willing to meet Real’s demands, and because we were still looking at European football. Right now, to the world outside England (i.e. to any player in a foreign league), we’re just a lower-half team who’ve had a poor season. Money alone won’t cut it.

We’ll get the big names - but not for another year. But that’s not a big problem - look what we’ve already got, and what we can do with realistic targets like McGeady. It really does take years to get back up to the top end, and we should just enjoy the journey rather than moan about our failure to sign galacticos.

  • 26 Spyro // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:50

Kash2 i only speak of players i have seen play, and if i feel a player would come to us there is normally a valid reason as to why i think so.

Also, why not 13mill for Sakho? I bet you didn’t even know who he was until yesterday, yet you give an opinion….strange

  • 27 Rich // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:53

Totally forgot Pandev, he would be a good attacking midfielder for us i think! Trying to think of other realistic targets for this position! I think Geovanni can do a job for us doesnt play much at Man city??

  • 28 Whumpie // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:53

Eric - good point about Lua Lua. I’m as excited about the possibility of emulating Wenger’s ability to unveil exceptional new talent next year. We’ve been quite low-key about our junior signings, but I think they will enable us to compete strongly for two cups next season.

And did anyone see Kazenga’s goal in the cup final? Fantastic talent.

  • 29 Toonswede // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:57

McGeady and Dunne would be great! But then we need to focus at the midfield, with an creative player to come in or will we then play 4-4-2 with McGeady, Geremi,Barton,Millner? ,,
Another striker who can come in and replace anyone of Michael, Oba or Mark is important to. Maybe Carroll can take another step towards a good EPL-striker, but this Gomis-guy seems interesting. Have a look at the young swedish striker Markus Berg now playing att Groningen in Dutch Eredevise. He can be something big.

  • 30 aaron d // Apr 30, 2008 at 11:57

Players in Dutch, German and French leagues would jump at the chance to play in england, plus the wages on offer is so much greater than what they can get in their leagues.
What about Kennedy Bakircioglü from Ajax as an attacking middfield option?
Remember Jimmy Briand we were linked to in january is now a portsmouth target.

  • 31 adam // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:02

i agree with aaron g. players outside england know that the premier league is the most popular league in the world and would love to be apart of it. thats one advantage. but i mean, playing for the magpies in front of 52000 and king kev. id do it 4 free all day, anyday

  • 32 GM // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:04

cant dunne buy his contract out for £1million? if so why we offering £5 to mancity, just give dunne the £1mil as a signing on fee??

Agree with some other comments, as well as a much needed creative genious in the middle of the park we also need DM cover for Butt faye hasnt got the passing ability either,we need someone who can pass a lot better and run with the ball

  • 33 Hadji // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:09

    Veloso-17 mill
    Malouda-10 mill
    Gomis-14-mill

    Cristian Zapata-8 mill
    Total-64 mill
    N’Zogbia-8 mill
    Smith-5 mill

All in all 43 mill to spend.

  • 34 irish_al // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:12

you’ve got to be in it to win it, think we need about 5-10 targets for each position we are looking to bring players in

  • 35 Graeme // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:16

Hadji - 6 good players - if only!!!!! lol

  • 36 rab wright // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:17

we will probably sign players we never mentioned above? as long as they quality i dont care!

  • 37 NUFCFAN // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:28

hadji - malouda is rubbish he hasnt done anything since being at chels

Sypro, lap up your choice of players.

would like the players linked but Dunne, is just not that exciting, he’s not a defender who people fear. Would rather just take all the youth up, sakho is a great start and sign, and maybe others.

  • 38 NUFCFAN // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:33

still think bullard would be a great squad player and wouldnt cost much if they go down.

and glad to see in one season we have done what should have been done 4 years ago

started by big sam with bramble, and now needs to be finished with amoebi, carr, and the rest of the dead wood!

  • 39 irish_al // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:34

Evidently Andy Johnson has broken out hearts by confirming he’s staying at Everton!!!!

A perfect example of the bullshit that is going to appear over the next 4 months. WHY would we want him??????

we will have about 8 players come in this summer, as sqaud players will be leaving and we are also looking to sign qaulity youngsters, i have a mate who lives in rome now, and he says that he is sure pandev will sign for us, he said bayern have dropped intrest now that lazio have been stalling on a new deal, i would stroke roy keanes mallestred dog if we could get VDV, atleast with sven staying untill after the asia tour for city, that will slow them down in the transer market. I WANT DUNNE BADLY AS HE IS A GREAT LEADER, AND YOU CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF THEM

  • 43 sas1 // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:43

I’d go along with the theory that Dunne is probably the best CB in the Premiership we could attract. His development over the last few years has been remarkable (and if I remember correctly, started when Keegan told him he’d sack him if he didn’t cut out the boozing). Now he’d make a good role model for Taylor, he and Faye would be immense. Those talking about Richards instead, his pace is a major asset. With a couple of injuries, that’s likely to go, and he has had a couple of injuries now.

With regards attracting players from the German league, I’d reckon anyone that would improve on our current lot play for clubs looking at Champions League football, and anyone who is not looking at Champions League football (Van Der Vaart in particular) could take his choice of teams who regularly feature in the Champions League. I’d imagine that’s true of the French league too (Ribery to Bayern Munich, Malouda to Chelsea)

There is always the possibility of signing the likes of Tevez or Mascherano but Keegan has said he doesn’t really trust them (though he has a track record of signing Asprilla)

I feel confident Keegan will end up with the right players for the club, and though he’s not fully in charge of it this time around, he has got some stunning deals in the past for us (Ginola, 2.5 million, Albert, whatever he cost).

I still reckon this team was good enough to push for European places this year. It’s a pity Allardyce couldn’t adapt his approach to the game, he might have done well, and in the end, it cost us dear. Clear out some deadwood, bring in a few better players, got a few good youngsters who could make a difference, I reckon we’ll do well.

The fact that we’re going after the likes of Modric is great, but we have to face the fact, that at the moment, without European football, we’re not as great a prospect anymore. If we lose out, we lose out, but I have a feeling this time next year, our chances will be better.

  • 44 geoffo // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:45

Still think defence is given high priority, so Daniel Van Buyten from Byern would be high on my list, he has presence and doesn’t ‘flap’ and young Taylor would benefit greatly from him. Def go for Mc Geady pace skill, however Keane could well get one over on us given the huge Irish presence at Stad Du Plight.

  • 45 NUFCFAN // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:51

i would sweeten keane by giving him duff and we get mcgready

  • 46 Toon Al // Apr 30, 2008 at 12:53

spyro, i think was kash was tryin to say is no way in the world is an 18-year old centre back worth 13 mil especially one who was been plying his trade in the french league

  • 47 geoffo // Apr 30, 2008 at 13:01

Agree NUFCFAN Duff off the books to Blunderland, he’s lost his pace and done nowt for us really, so would be well rid. Lets not forget we’ve got some great young prospects coming through and could well be blooded at some stage next term. The likes of Kadar and Tozer could well be given the odd shout here and there.

  • 48 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 30, 2008 at 13:07

We’ve been linked to Joaquin, still young, very skillful but inconsistent. Not sure if he’s come to us!

  • 51 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 13:26

tribal say we’re in for Joaquin

  • 52 mark // Apr 30, 2008 at 13:28

1st things 2nd, im sick of the idiots on here like Hadji et al who come on saying “lets sign him for £13m”

we live in the real world, players who are good on Football Manager, arent as good in real life, they wouldnt score 20 goals in 50 games from right back, it just doesnt happen like that in real life.

I would go for Dunne, Arshavin, McGeady, Gomis and a few young players, possibly Wayne Bridge and Danny Van Buyten. should be all we need.

  • 53 mark // Apr 30, 2008 at 13:34

actually, aswell, I would try and sign Diego since we missed Modric. Arshavin as replacement for the surely outbound Emre, sad to see him go. Giles Barnes would be one of the youngsters I talk about ^^^

Were linked with Joaquin today aswell, but I think he is a sulky git.

  • 54 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 13:35

mark - Most players on FM are usually good in real life too. While I’m not saying you should sign players just because they’re good on a game, the development team do have about 5,000 scouts worldwide. I first heard about young stars like Messi, Bojan etc from FM so don’t dismiss them because you’ve never heard of them. The whole FM argument is b*llocks and is only used by those who never watch football outside of England, so they have no clue of who’s out there. That’s why people want us to sign people like Ashton when we could get so much better elsewhere.

  • 55 geoffo // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:00

Money talks!!Why shouldn’t we aim high and offer top money for top players?? Who’d have thought Benny Mccarthy to Blackburn? Anelka to Bolton? they go for the bucks first , Champ league, UEFA cup etc a consideration, but in a footballers world it’s money over everything else, it’s a short career so they make hay while they can, so aim high! Shy bairns get nowt as we say up north!!

  • 56 Faustino // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:03

Play FM as much as you want to scout players but can you all stop using the AM DM abbreviations they mean bollocks all in real life.

What needs to be remembered [and I know it's easy to forget as an Englishmen] is that the Euro cup is on. This means price hikes and over exposure i.e. the likes of Huntelaar, Klose, Van Buyten etc. shown on a world stage. If there any good the Champs league teams will pick them up, if there not we have a chance to buy a player who isn’t in form.

Plus I remember Keegan considering Alexei Lalas after the 94 world cup for gods sake, so expect some nuts decisions.

  • 57 Toon_Ksk // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:15

We should quickly get the deal dunne now…

  • 58 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:16

Those abbreviations mean bollocks all do they…you’re clearly out of touch with the modern game to an alarming extent.

  • 59 Toon_Ksk // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:18

    Faustino, did u mention 94?

That was years ago, people change, mentality changes as well. The fact that you are brooding over something that happens more than a decade ago shows that you should move on and get a life.

You are like those who said “No to Keegan” because Keegan dismantled the reserves many years ago.

  • 60 chuck // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:29

There’s a tendency for PL managers to think PL experience is something special, bull***t,
look at the young striker at Blackburn, first season twenty odd goals.
There are plenty of other examples.
Face it the best players in the PL are not natives,
    plus they come cheaper.
My point, don’t pay over the top fees for home grown talent when there`s better and less expensive players available elsewhere.
Did the fan not like the likes of Nobby Solano,
Ginola, even the Robledo brothers(the who?)

  • 61 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:36

chuck - Exactly. English players are more expensive and often not as good as cheaper, foreign players.

  • 62 Whumpie // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:43

Got to disagree on this one. If you look back at our history of expensive flops, notice one thing: they are almost all foreign and went wrong because they couldn’t adapt. Ginola and Nobby are examples of it working, but the list of far more expensive examples of it not working would be a hell of a lot longer!

Perfect recent examples: Viana, Luque, Rozenhal. All fantastic on paper, but totally unable to deal with our type of football.

Keep ‘em. Get me a hard-nosed Brit or tested prem player who’s here for the passion, not some grease-haired numpty who came for the money and is afraid of breaking his alice band.

Besides, it’s only a matter of time before the quota system comes in for domestic players, at which point the likes of Arse and Chelski are stuffed.

  • 63 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:49

The only way to win with English players is to be a top 4 club as they buy all the decent ones. Not to mention English players can’t play football as well as other Europeans/South Americans.

  • 64 Faustino // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:49

Hamas - no they don’t, the term is ‘holding midfielder’ not defensive if you use ‘DM’ it shows you’ve leanrn’t all you know of a computer game and not on the field. I suppose at a push you can have ‘attacking midfielder’ but to me that’s plain and simply a midfielder.

It’s you that’s out of touch my friend as every central midfielder in the modern game should defend and attack/support this is why the terminology is gaff. What’s Gerrard then smart arse DM or AM, cos to me he’s both?

Toon KSK - wind your neck in son, it was a throw away comment meant as a joke for anyone who remembers the laughable Lalas who could barely kick a ball.

Nice contribution to the thread there ; ignore what Eds written, the vast majority of what I and certainly everyone else has said to jump on somehting like that and basically get it sooo wrong you wouldn’t believe. Cos to me KK is god and he made the 90s what they were to me as a fan. Amazing.

  • 65 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 14:57

How laughable you would bring up Gerrard. He would not be talked about the way he is if he were a foreign player.

Also, he is a box-to-box midfielder. Don’t get pissed at me because England lags behind with outdated terminology.

  • 66 Whumpie // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:03

This is daft! To pretend that somehow players in other leagues are better than those in the Premiership is utter gash!

Three of the four teams in the Champs League semi finals, and both of them in the final are Premiership teams. Does that not tell you something?

Do get a reality check fellas - just because they have surnames ending in ‘i’ or ‘o’ doesn’t make them better players. If the ones from Real, Deportivo and all the others are so good, where the hell were they last night?

Premiership players - English or not - are what we need. And a raid on Manshitty sounds like a good place to start.

And while I’m on a rant: will those still saying we need a hatful of new players please step off. Like KK has said several times, we just need a very small number of top-end players in key positions and some more young talent for the future. And if they can pull that off, I’ll be impressed.

Hamas did you pull this out of your @rse?

“Not to mention English players can’t play football as well as other Europeans/South Americans.”

where dya get that from? are you trying to say the standard of players outside the english league is better? or are you trying to say there are more good players elseware,

england is a very small country there is bound to be countries who have ‘more’ good players, but the standard in england is outstanding

  • 68 Leo // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:07

i second what whumpie has said, where was these foreign teams in the championsleague? they were probably defeated by the english teams who are heading for the final.

  • 69 Obafan // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:09

McGeady: I have not seen him a lot, so I will not judge on him.

Dunne: not that convinced about him; he started vey solid this season, but Richards went out and Dunne his level went down.

Sakho: don’t know him, so again no comment, but it seems a lot of money

    Gomis; no news today???

Arshavin; what has happenned with our interest?? It would be ashame iof we not tried to sign a player of his quality. And he would love to come.

I think it is silly now to mention lots of Man City players to go after (Johnson, Ireland, even Elano, …). It is not because Sven goes that they are worth to go after (I would only choose 2 of them: Petrov and Richards).

  • 70 irish_al // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:18

uk nationals that have not been very good, alan smith (for mixed reasons), duncan furgeson, TITUS BRAMBLE, des hamilton, paul kitson, carl cort

players with premierleague experiance, duff, carr, amady faye

We’ve made some poor signing regardless of nationality or experiance

  • 71 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:20

All the top 4 have a majority of foreign players. Is Ronaldo English now? Honestly, it’s like you lot don’t want to win something.

You’re severely deluded in thinking English players mean anything. Why’s the English National team not going to the Euros then? Claim bad management if you like, the fact is English players are made to look good by the foreigners surrounding them at club level.

  • 72 Faustino // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:28

Hamas man, your on a board for an English football team, shut up or do one will you.

Anyway…….. back on point; notice today that Keegan has almost certainly confirmed that he only tried to bring in Woodgate in the Jan window…sooo who is this mystery player third player we’ve missed out on then? or was it a KK slip of the tongue.

  • 73 mark // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:33

Whumpie, so, as you belive the EPL is better, is the Football League better as they had a 3:1 ratio in the FA Cup Semi Final??????

You cant say the EPL is the best league in the world as it had 3 teams in the CL Semi Finals…its a cup competetion and its Football.

If your still of the opinion the EPL is the best because of that reason, then Im a firm believer that Swansea would trounce Real Madrid 9-0 and woah! A pig just flew.

  • 74 Hamas (51times) // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:34

Is that an admittance of defeat? I accept.

Also, I’m more Geordie than you could ever hope to be you barely-literate pleb.

  • 75 Faustino // Apr 30, 2008 at 15:41

It’s not an admtion of anything you deluded, I assume little, fool.

Listen mate rule 1; anyone flexing it and giving it agro on a messageboard is basically a little geek who revels in the fact that they can be who they could never be in real life, from the safety of their own home. You give yourself away.

This is a decent site where people have discussion about a club they love and keep it nice. No one wants your little hidden threats and borderline racist jibes at the English from behind a computer screen here.

Tell me this; what Geordie doesn’t rate english football players and behaves the way you are?

And literate, no need for a hyphen there my friend.

  • 76 Whumpie // Apr 30, 2008 at 16:00

Good point, Mark! But there is a key difference: the 3:1 in the FA cup is a first in 100+ years, but the prem has been well-represented in the CL for years now. But it’s still a good point. Dammit.

And I’d give Swansea about the same odds against Real as I would Barnsley beating Liverpool and then Chelsea.

    :)

It’s a global game now so it doesn’t matter if theyre from Hungary or Hetton le Hole, it’s a world stage, so for gods sake stop being so parochial in your thinking, target the best then throw your hat in the ring. I’m new to this site, but I may well dip out of these debates if they are going to focus on the personalities of the contributors!

Alan Smith’s agent has rejected reports linking the Newcastle man with a move to Rangers.

Recent reports have suggested Rangers are lining up a swoop for England international Smith in the summer.

Rumours over a possible switch to Ibrox for Smith intensified over the weekend after the former Leeds and Manchester United star was spotted at at the Old Firm derby.

Smith’s representative Alex Black has played down the rumours and says the player is happy at St James’ Park.

    Happy
“Alan has no intention of leaving Newcastle, he is happy at the club,” Black told skysports.com

“All this Rangers talk has come about because he was at a couple of their games.

“It was just a coincidence as Alan got tickets for the Old Firm game and he went with a few friends to experience a Rangers v Celtic game as he is a football fan.

“Alan is not thinking about anything else but coming back fresh for next season and helping Newcastle to success.”

HAHA Faustino you got him there!

  • 80 Bob // Apr 30, 2008 at 18:11

    Well said geoffo (post 77).

Let’s not start the petty jibes at each other. It happens on every other football forum (eg. 606 - and yes, I know this is a blog, not a forum) and it really brings the quality down.

I mean, what’s the point of aruging on the internet, seriously?!?

  • 81 karim // Apr 30, 2008 at 18:33

I wouldn’t mind dunne as a squad player but i think we need a quality cb with experience to play alongside taylor. All this mush about Joaquin I WISH it is true but no yet again another fabrication. Lets get Dunne, McGeady, Bridge, Ashton, and Try a cheeky bid for Eto or Van Der Vaat

  • 82 Slam Dunc // Apr 30, 2008 at 19:23

Tottenham apparently paid £22 million for Modric which included a few ‘extras’ to Dinamo Zagreb, so thats why we dropped out.
Also one of the 3 targets already turning us down was rumoured to be Steve Sidwell from Chelsea.
Here is a good article on likely midfield transfer targets:

  • 83 Punk Skunk // Apr 30, 2008 at 19:45

Viana, Roz & Luque aren’t really such ‘perfect’ examples…How many games did they get to prove themselves, probably not a seasons worth between ‘em?..
…Why don’t many english players go abroad?..

  • 84 Bafétimbi Gomis // Apr 30, 2008 at 20:03

    Hello Friends,

I am studying a very nice offer from your club, Newcastle United.

Can someone answer a few questions for me?
Are there any nice Senegalese restaurants in Newcastle?
Is the weather really that bad?
Why should I pick Newcastle instead of Tottenham (who also just made me an offer?)

    -Baf

  • 85 geoffo // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:45

They had plenty of opportunities to prove themselves, but didn’t cut it with us that’s all. It happens, Rush in the Italian league? Some players don’t ‘travel’, often nowt to do with ability but other factors, got to be mentaly right. Keegans a master at getting players heads right, with the possible exception of Nzogbia!

  • 86 Geordie Gerrard7 // Apr 30, 2008 at 22:52

i cant stand n’zog anymore, complete waste of time, hope he goes for a nice big fee though.

  • 87 Leo // Apr 30, 2008 at 23:26

well baf gomis, im very suprised you speak such good english if that is infact you, which i am sceptical about, the weather is not much different to the south, its a total falasy that the weather is that much different. i do know of a senegalese restraunt which is on the west road, maybe if you sign you will be able to eat there, both habib beye abdolaye faye and diatta also eat there, they close the restraunt for them guys, so you will have company. haha

  • 88 Leo // Apr 30, 2008 at 23:30

oh oh oh, i just thought i would name drop a bit hear since some person is pretending to be Gomis, my dad was in some restraunt with business yesterday night i cant remember the name of the place something 21, but obafemi was in there with his blue lambo outside the restraunt. he was apparntly very polite to everyone who entered the bar saying hello etc etc, when people left he would look up and say did you have a nice meal etc etc. what a nice bloke he is i say

  • 89 Toon Down Under // May 1, 2008 at 4:18

Newcastle will need about 6 players I reckon this summer. It will be hard to attract a quality attacking midfielder, but Luis Suarez from Ajax is awsome, & is signable!

The left side will need some signing, McGeady or Malouda are possible candidates, plus Butt is getting old, we need a really good replacement.

People forget that players don’t see Newcastle as a dead end club, but rather one with a history of terrible back room management. With Keegan back, I think many players could be wooed to Newcastle for the fact that Newcastle will play exciting attacking football, along with a good stadium & club facilities.

    Here are the suspects:

    Gomis or Gourfrann - 14M - 8M (Superstars)
    Lucho Gonzalez - 10M (DM)
    Dunne - 5M (CD)
    Taiwo - 8M (LB)
McGeady or Malouda - 9M (LM)

    Attacking Midfield possibles

Van der Vaart - 15 Million
    Maduro - 8 million
    Diego - 20 million
    Nasri - 20 million
    Menez - 12 million
    Suarez - 15 million
    Renato Augusto - 10 million

If we can sign one, it will be a great step forward!

  • 90 howway geordies // May 1, 2008 at 6:59

I don’t know how people can be bothered with all this speculation. 99% of it will lead nowhere. Only another 3 months to go!

  • 91 mark // May 1, 2008 at 10:20

3 months to go and we will have signed 5 or 6 players despite having been linked to 5 or 6 hundred.
