Top Swiss Striker Wants To Join Newcastle

Thursday May 1st, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 44 Comments

It’s usually the other way round - that Newcastle are after a player, but today a youngster has come out and said his dream is to play with Michael Owen at Newcastle United.

Eren Derdiyok - wants to join Newcastle United

Kevin Keegan may want to check out 19 year-old 6’ 3” striker Eren Derdiyok of Switzerland and Swiss club FC Basle.

That’s because the Daily Mirror are reporting today that the youngster would like to come to Newcastle, so he can play alongside Michael Owen.

Eren is quoted in the Mirror today as saying:

“My dream is to play with Owen at Newcastle.”

And remember it was Derdiyok who scored that great goal against England in February for the Swiss, and from what we can tell from his record, he would look a good buy.

He has played for Basel 23 times this season and scored 10 goals and has represented the full Switzerland side twice and scored one goal. He previously played for the Swiss Under-19 (7 goals in 7 games) and Under-21 (7 goals in 5 games) sides.

He seems to have little trouble scoring goals, that’s for sure.

At 6ft 3in Derdiyok is a powerful striker, who can also play at center-back if needed. He is of Turkish descent and started his career with the Swiss club BSC Old Boys, at the beginning of the 2005/06 season.

He scored 10 goals in just 18 appearances for BSC Old Boys, and FC Basel snapped him up in 2006 at the young age of 18.

The 2007/2008 season has turned out to be even more productive, and he has been a regular in the Basle side.

Derdiyok scored his first hat trick playing away against FC Thun on 2nd March this year, and in early April, Basle won the Swisscom Cup.

He’s worth it, for Kevin to at least check him out, and it’s kind of nice that we get young players expressing an interest in playing for our club. It certainly cannot hurt our image. :D

Yes, we know we also have young Andy Carroll at the club, but it’s the more the merrier almost for youngsters, because they will not all make it to the first team.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

what a cool name he has, just love saying it lol.

might be a good signing, let keegan decide tho lol. not going to get over excited over anything unless they are holding a contract and signing it

  • 2 Spyro // May 1, 2008 at 10:40

I have only seen him play probably four or five times in my life but he has looked decent i must admit. He is a good youngster and good prospect. Perfect replacement for Ameobi. Someone who wants to play for our club and wont mind not starting every game. Carrying on with our youth route.

  • 3 toonhitman // May 1, 2008 at 10:42

give the lad a try out let kk see what hes got

  • 4 Hamas (51times) // May 1, 2008 at 10:44

Sounds like he could be a good prospect, wonder if Keegan is interested though? Perhaps he was on Wise and co’s list?

  • 5 Matt Lacey // May 1, 2008 at 10:47

Never seen him play apart from the England game, looks powerful and his goal was very well taken (crap defending, but a good finish nonetheless).

Surely he’s worth a look - scored 7 goals in 5 appearances for the Swiss U21 side, same age as Andy Carroll and he dreams of playing for the club - how much? :)

  • 6 Hamas (51times) // May 1, 2008 at 10:51

I think he’s more interested in playing with our skipper, but still it’s nice that he wants to come here.

  • 7 AZ // May 1, 2008 at 10:53

    FINALY A REALISTIC TARGET!!!

  • 8 Bill F // May 1, 2008 at 10:55

He is probably testing the water and trying to get some interest from the EPL clubs. He will no doubt have noticed the interest stirred up by other players saying they want to come to us.
I would suggest that no one gets to excited by this current paper talk.

  • 9 Hamas (51times) // May 1, 2008 at 11:05

Bill F - That’s very possible, but while we shouldn’t get excited by this surely a little optimism isn’t that bad once in a while?

  • 10 Spyro // May 1, 2008 at 11:09

guys dont get excited because this is nothing to get excited about, lol. He is a good prospect, thats all.

  • 11 Marko // May 1, 2008 at 11:13

Hamas, is that your name, or are you advocating an Islamic terrorist organisation?

  • 12 Benji1892 // May 1, 2008 at 11:18

I live in Basel and I’ve seen him play a couple of times and he defnitely seems like a very good prospect. Still needs to work on his finishing a bit, but he’s a strong lad as he showed whilst playing against england at wembley. and at only 19 he could be a good signing to add to the pool of youngsters we’re bringing in.

  • 13 Hadrian // May 1, 2008 at 11:19

    sound him out Kev !
exactly the kind of commitment we like at this club , if he’s such a good prospect he could have said any team in the world , i like the lads attitude !!!!!

    p.s . whats he like ? :P can he play ? :D

  • 14 Ant // May 1, 2008 at 11:22

Andy Carroll wore a belt to liquid in town with “There’s only one Andy Carroll” on it….He can get hit by a bus for all I care…

    Go to Peru…find another Nobby…:)

  • 15 Hamas (51times) // May 1, 2008 at 11:26

Marko - Some would say the IDF are terrorists…

  • 16 sirjasontoon // May 1, 2008 at 11:32

These sort of rumours are starting to get on my nerves and the window is not even open yet !

Explosive comments from Hamas.hmmmm very very strange..what’s up with Toon Tom normally he would have surfed the net by now and found out what Derdiyok likes for breakfast and all his stats zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Anyway I am not going to lose any sleep over transfers I am having a chilled summer I am sure Steptoe Ashley will bring in a ramshackle bunch of chancers in over the summer that will make us all cringe.

  • 17 Bill F // May 1, 2008 at 11:32

Hamas I did say don’t get “TOO” excited. ;)

Capitals are OK by the for a little bit of accentuation to a word or phrase.

  • 18 irish_al // May 1, 2008 at 11:57

i thought we’ve misunderstood, FC Basle are about to launch an audacious bid for Owen, lol

  • 19 michael // May 1, 2008 at 12:09

My dream is to play with Owen at Newcastle….

Funny, I don’t see the Mirror printing anything about me.
Perhaps that quote will be in tomorrow’s issue.

(I serve to highlight the loose footing on which this article is based!)

  • 20 geoffo // May 1, 2008 at 12:19

sirjasontoon what have you based your opinion of Ashley on? ramshackle bunch of chancers?? will we alll be cringing???, for f***s sake have some faith!!

  • 21 Obafan // May 1, 2008 at 13:10

Since when are players saying where they want to play. I think it is a bit strange.

I hope tomorrow Gomis makes the same comment in a newspaper, cause he is the one we defo should go after!!!!!

  • 22 Mark // May 1, 2008 at 13:13

yeah maybe the toon have been scouting him, ive never heard of him, on paper, he looks good, but id have to see him play.

  • 23 chuck // May 1, 2008 at 14:22

Yep! another one for the youth side, if he does`nt cost too much.
Building a young outstanding side that will hopefully come to fruition within the next few years, providing first team back up and perhaps permanent roles.
    Think it`s a good policy?

  • 24 Shaz // May 1, 2008 at 14:27

he might want to hang fire and see if owen stays first.before you all start having a go at me , i’m proud of the way our boys played last night and Newcastle can only dream of being in a champions league semi final.

  • 25 Hamas (51times) // May 1, 2008 at 14:35

    shaz - Are you a self-pitying Scouse murderer or a Neo-Nazi cockney?

  • 26 gonufc // May 1, 2008 at 15:14

Looks great, was really impressed with him in the england game. If he’s fairly cheap then he could be a great buy.

  • 27 ChrisL // May 1, 2008 at 15:15

This is the type of reason Keegan wants to extend Owen’s contract… He’s a talisman figure & it’s a statement of intent.

  • 28 ende // May 1, 2008 at 15:32

Derdiyok, Carroll, Gomis… we can always sell off the extra talent for $$$.

btw, you heard it hear first: DIRTY-YOK! DIRTY-YOK! Maybe we should sell him to sunderland.

  • 29 Tom // May 1, 2008 at 17:25

can play centre back as well? now theres something you dont see every day

  • 30 robertsa // May 1, 2008 at 18:13

get him he at all costs

  • 31 Jamie G // May 1, 2008 at 18:16

Sorry to go off in a slight tangent…but HAMAS, why have u made this your name? u say the IDF are terrorists which is just a reaction to them defending their country brilliantly and being militarily stronger than Hamas, who are a disgraceful killing cult who HATE jews and christians alike.
Now your allowed to have your own opinions but it just incites the wrong kind of vibe for the blog, and you are obv just crazing attention.

  • 32 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 1, 2008 at 18:16

I hate religion - all a bunch of bollocks.

  • 34 Leo // May 1, 2008 at 18:24

i dont hate religion but i agree with you tom, its not toally nessesary, everyone is allowed their beliefs, i dont believe in a specific faith i have my own beliefs, which im sure many have, a religion in alot of cases gives someone something to live for…

back to the point, putting your name as “Hamas” if intended to point out that you agree that someone should be kulled in light of their beliefs and religion is totally wrong, and if it is the case, my view of you will have seriously dropped.
i hope that is not the case

  • 35 Jamie G // May 1, 2008 at 18:31

I agree with you Leo, i see a few of your comments and your obv an intelligent guy. and well done for spotting the fact that religion (whatever your faith or opinion is) has no place in football. This Hamas guy obv has a right to a say but why doesnt he put his name forward so he can be taken seriousley.
religion is private and has no place in football.

  • 36 geoffo // May 1, 2008 at 19:00

I agree Jamie G, religion has no place in football, but who isn’t relishing the third coming of the Messia? back in the Mecca of football St James, where the disciples in their worshipful hordes come to pray and where miracles can and do happen….

  • 37 Jamie G // May 1, 2008 at 19:04

haha very good geoffo…maybe we can make one exception.

  • 38 Punk Skunk // May 1, 2008 at 19:09

    There’s only one religion:
    …N.U.F.C!..

  • 39 JoeToon // May 1, 2008 at 19:42

    shaz - Are you a self-pitying Scouse murderer or a Neo-Nazi cockney?

wtf are you on Hamas (51times) ?

I’m Newcastle thru ‘n thru coming from a line of many generations of Geordies, i will support and defend the toon til i die but ffs you are a f ookin disgrace.
you obviously have sympathy, as your name and your remarks would suggest, with terrorists!

”Marko - Some would say the IDF are terrorists…”

This should be enough to ban you from every decent board going, but your comments i believe stemming from stadium disasters shows what a pr iiick you really are.
Banter is banter but you have overstepped the mark.

maybe you should go check if ya dick can touch ya arse and go fook ya self.

  • 40 geoffo // May 1, 2008 at 20:13

We all love the toon, there’s a great sense of anticipation for next season (justified for once) but wooah there ‘Hamas’ bigotry has no place in football, racism has no place in football, aligning yourself with terrorists is frankly pathetic, go support a team where your views may be welcome. I don’t even believe you have a geordie passport. Not welcome.

  • 41 Punk Skunk // May 1, 2008 at 20:25

How shaz, telt ya’, ya’ luck had run out like!..

  • 42 valle // May 2, 2008 at 0:18

Perhaps, but these transfers needs to be put on a backburner till we get some class players in for the 1st team.

  • 43 Hizbullah // May 2, 2008 at 8:19

Any overseas player that wants to come to Newcastle should be allowed to (as long as they don’t suck).

Shows some spunk… Better to have “untried” youthful players that wanna play for the club, then primadonna “stars” that don’t care about the club…

Who knows, he could be a gem, and the swiss ain t just good at producing cheese and chocolate and neutral opinions y’know…

  • 44 ELFER // May 2, 2008 at 8:31

    WOAAAAAAH ;-)

this would be a dream for him come true…you know that I’m swiss and I really think he’s a promising young talent (comes out of the fantastic basel and former tottham gaffer CHRISTIAN GROSS).

I said that he has the availability to be even bigger as PETRIC (who also came out from basel).
