Newcastle Offer £12M for Darren Bent

Sunday May 4th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 69 Comments

The People is reporting today that Dennis Wise is leading a £12M Newcastle bid for the available Tottenham striker Darren Bent.

Darren Bent - Newcastle target for £12M

Tottenham paid way over the top for Bent last summer, when they dished out £16.5M to Charlton for the player. And it’s interesting that Newcastle were interested in Bent during Bobby Robson’s reign at the club, when Bent was still at Bobby’s old club, Ipswich Town.

They signed Darren Ambrose at that time, in March, 2003, but also wanted Bent as part of the package. Bent apparently refused to sign while Ipswich were then in administration, because he didn’t think he’d play much for Newcastle, at that time.

We think Darren will want to join Newcastle, under manager Kevin Keegan, and the Tyneside club will be able to offer him regular first-team football he has not been able to get at White Hart Lane.

We think Darren bent would be an excellent signing for the club because he is a proven scorer in the Premier League, and those are the players Kevin Keegan wants to go after in the summer, so that the risk of getting a high priced failure is reduced.

The People are also reporting that Keegan has vetoed several of Dennis Wise’s suggested targets.

But the news is that he is keen on Darren Bent. If we can get Darren to Tyneside, our four strikers of Owen, Martins, Viduka and Bent will be awesome, with 19 year-old up and coming local lad, Andy Carroll, also pushing to play next season.

Darren played 126 times for Ipswich scoring 48 goals, and 68 games for Charlton in the Premier League, scoring 31 goals.

Bent has played just 22 times for Spurs this season with 7 goals, and played for the England Under-21 side 14 times (8 goals) and has so far got 3 full England caps.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

hmmmm, not too sure on bent, theirs better?

  • 2 toonarmy08 // May 4, 2008 at 10:21

Not sure about this ,not sure how he would fit in,with owen martins viduka and carrol ,not sure we need him.He not a bad player but feel 12mill is abit steep.I would pay 10mill tops.
    team 4 next season;
    gk-given/harps
    rb-beye
    lb-enrique/riise
    cb-taylor/faye
    cb-metzelder/yobo/dunne
    rm-swp/milner
    lm-barton/vd vaart
    cm-butt/gattuso
    rf-owen/bent
    lf martins/gomis
    cf-dukes/carrol
we would get top 6 with this squad i feel.

  • 3 smc894 // May 4, 2008 at 10:21

Why not, will be good to see ham faces when they realise they have paid 4.5 million for bent to play 22 games

  • 4 Greg B // May 4, 2008 at 10:23

I would see Bent as a good replacement for Viduka, however 12 million is ludicrous and just shows the inflated price of English players.
I think Bent would link well with either Owen or Martins, or both.

  • 5 nick toon // May 4, 2008 at 10:25

no thanks, we will probably only sign one striker this summer and if thats the case there is better options than bent, would rather see gomis myself

  • 6 Leo // May 4, 2008 at 10:27

well he can come up and teach me how to play badminton because apparntly thats his sport lol.

he is strong quick and got a good shot on him, age is on his side so he will be a good signing

  • 7 Marguerite // May 4, 2008 at 10:28

Way too expensive in my opinion.

  • 8 Leo // May 4, 2008 at 10:28

also someone said english talent is soo over priced, lets look at tottenhams recent signing, only 22 modric is and totally unproven in the premiership, and they pay 22.5mil pounds for him…

  • 9 ADL // May 4, 2008 at 10:28

I really hope this info isn’t true!

Buying Bent would be a terrible decision and would just be another one of Newcastle’s horrible signings.

I think that if we manage to keep Owen and Martins we shouldn’t be splurging 12m on strikers but should be using that money for defence and midfield.

  • 10 nick toon // May 4, 2008 at 10:31

i dont even want us buying cast offs from the big 4 never mind buying cast off from spurs, get gomis instd

  • 11 Pete // May 4, 2008 at 10:31

Everybody taking crazy pills today? I’m refusing to believe we’re bidding for Bent. He’s been a disaster for Tottenham, there’s a reason they’re trying to get rid of him. The price mentioned is ridicilous.

  • 12 toonarmy08 // May 4, 2008 at 10:33

Leo- thought they paid 15.5 4 modric???

  • 13 dan // May 4, 2008 at 10:35

go for Crouch instead…hugely underated player would link well with other strikers at the club. Viduka does nt have long left.

  • 14 Eric // May 4, 2008 at 10:36

Oh no, no, no, no. Over-rated, over-priced. Who is taking over the asylum. Hope it is just paper talk.

  • 15 toonarmy08 // May 4, 2008 at 10:40

Dan-agreed ,i would rather have crouch, and would be cheaper.7-8mill tops.Just hope because we have a billionaire owner clubs dont hold us to ransom 4 players we go 4 ,12mill 4 bent is way over the top !!

  • 16 Doctapaul // May 4, 2008 at 10:44

Get Oba and Owen to sign new contracts. And go for a target man to replace the ageing Viduka. As much as I rate him, I suspect Bent is not the right person. He is too similar to Oba.

  • 17 KKK // May 4, 2008 at 10:45

Not a bad player but definitely over-priced at 12M. I think Gomis looks a better prospect.

  • 18 nate dawg // May 4, 2008 at 10:47

not sure about it, if we can get him for eight id be happy but not the type of player feel the club really needs , feel we need a drogba/shearer player dont even mind if the player doesnt get twenty a seasons cause owen and oba will sort us with that,

  • 19 soccerfanbase // May 4, 2008 at 10:50

Darren could be a little more cheaper 6 million would be ok 8 million could be a waste…any soccer lover who will like to interact with other fans and dicuss any soccer related issues should check out Soccer fan base dot com it is free to join.

  • 20 SurreyMag // May 4, 2008 at 10:54

Whilst I applaud new moves in the market (and I still rate Bent despite the fact that he seems to have “gone out of fashion”) I think we should also be tieing up out existing strikers Martins and Owen.

Today reports suggest Keegan is unhappy at the delay in getting Owen on a new contract, and the NoW reports that Wenger has made Martins his no.1 priority. If we lose either of these guys it will be because of the procrastination of our Management Team. Perhaps Mort and Ashley should spend less time in the Casinos, and more time making the right decisions for our club.

  • 21 Toon1978 // May 4, 2008 at 10:56

Owen is keeping quiet about signing a new contract and Arsenal are interested in MARTINS again. Mort is taking way to long to get Owen signed and sealed seems like a total lack of knowledge of the game. The way OWEN is scoring goals ATM the big clubs will be sniffing once again. CMON get this sorted with Owen. As for BENT well its a no for me because i aint seen much of him if he aint good enough for SPURS he aint good enough for us. All we keep seeing of late is negativity, KK admiting “WE WILL NOT GET ALL PEBBLES ON THE BEECH” also “NOT SURE IF OWEN WILL STAY” and constantly beeing linked with the same players as ARSENAL knowing fine well we dont stand a chance of competing with them. Other clubs outside the big 4 cannot sniff at a decent player without the glutt of the big 4 being involved. FIRSTLY get OWEN tied up now, then GET TAYLORS contract sorted, THEN forget about looking at players the top 4 are looking at because it only ends up in tears and go for realistic targets.

  • 22 Mick G // May 4, 2008 at 11:07

Unfortunately thats the price these days.I think he would be an ideal replacement for Viduka, and also he’s gettable. Some of the names mentioned on this blog are ridiculous and would never go to a club that isn’t playing in Europe, besides that it isn’t my money so I don’t care how much he costs .

  • 23 Spyro // May 4, 2008 at 11:11

is this some sort of sick joke!? 13mill for Bent!? F**K OFF! If this happens i will really start to get suspicious with this Newcastle Tottenham connection our Chairman has, why are we doing them favours by signing their crap?

  • 24 Toon1978 // May 4, 2008 at 11:23

SPYRO Bent is a canny player but like i have said in the past if he ain’t good enough for SPURS then he ain’t good enough for us remember BENT has already knocked us back before so me personally would not go for him because of that. ASHTON would be a better idea, would be cheaper and IMO ASHTON is a better striker.

  • 25 Hadrian // May 4, 2008 at 11:27

what a load of shite .

  • 26 Slam Dunc // May 4, 2008 at 11:34

Just to pick up on one of the points above, Tottenham paid £16.5 million for Modric but ‘rumour’ has it that to seal the deal early and see of Newcastle and others they had to pay £6 million ‘extras’ to Dinamo Zagreb making the total transfer £22.5 million.

So yes, they probably need to off load Darren Bent to help fund their bid for David Villa.

Though Berbatov is wanting to leave as well.

  • 27 Punk Skunk // May 4, 2008 at 11:50

    omg!..

  • 28 ToonDaft // May 4, 2008 at 11:53

why on Earth would we want a reject from a team one place above us in the league? LET’S BE HONEST, as silly as it may sound to those in support of Bent being a good player, he has not made the grade at a bigger team like Spurs. It must surely be the case the he is not showing enough quality in training? Spurs are obviously wanting to off-load him so surely we wouldn’t be suckered into this? Crouch would be a much better signing imo, and cheaper no doubt. Also, if we end up with Bent over Gomis it could be disaster as one looks to have a great future whilst bent, on a reported 90k p/ week seems to be one of the most overrated players in the Prem - 17 m and 90k p.wk - GIVE OVER!
Anyway, rather than all of this crap about rumours I wish we would finalise some better news: the new contracts for Owen, Taylor and Martins - we seem to be taking too long over these, it is becoming worrying :(

  • 29 Hamas (51times) // May 4, 2008 at 11:54

What use do we have for Bent? I don’t see where he’d fit in to the team really.

  • 30 Swanx // May 4, 2008 at 11:58

You honestly think that he is going to get regular football up gere. I can’t see him getting in ahead of Owen or Martins, and I think keegan will only have 2 up front next season.

  • 31 Callum // May 4, 2008 at 12:02

Darren played 126 times for Ipswich scoring 48 goals, and 68 games for Charlton in the Premier League, scoring 31 goals.

I didnt realise his record is that good, thats almost 1 goal every 2 games :)

  • 32 Ashton // May 4, 2008 at 12:04

    Gomis is better

  • 33 ToonDaft // May 4, 2008 at 12:06

what’s his record at Spurs? aint so hot when there is competition

  • 34 ToonIndonesia // May 4, 2008 at 12:07

I’d rather have Leroy Lita. He’s strong, speedy n skillful. He’s more like Bent, but a lot cheaper I suppose.. Considering Reading is dropping.

Lita is Oba kind of player. Very fit in for traditional style football.. KK style.

  • 35 ToonDaft // May 4, 2008 at 12:09

if we are indeed going to sign a striker, let us at least hold off until we can sign top draw quality, what is the point is signing potential squad players as KK has already said

  • 36 ToonKing // May 4, 2008 at 12:10

i know i drank too much yesterday but pls somebody tell me this is just a bad dream……… Bent…..13 mil…….nightmare for sure.

  • 37 Toon1978 // May 4, 2008 at 12:10

Dean Ashton is a better option all together aswell as Crouch,or i know its a long shot Robbie Keane highly underated IMO and does not get the plaudits he deserves.

  • 38 Faustino // May 4, 2008 at 12:28

Oh f**k this…. It’s the People for gods sake . However if it is true it’s a sad reflection of the club to go for a Spurs reject.

But thinking about it 14mil for a player that at present wouldn’t get a start! Balls.

  • 39 Newcastle United. // May 4, 2008 at 12:28

    Please no.

  • 40 Jim // May 4, 2008 at 12:35

    nooooooooooooo……….

  • 41 robertsa // May 4, 2008 at 12:35

what a shit heap dont get Bent his name is a good enough reason not to get him but the fact is he is shite. Riise is good but not Bent. especially with arsenal going for martins. if we could get bent for 8 million maybe i would think twice.

  • 42 irish_al // May 4, 2008 at 12:35

to those he say he is not good enough for us as he’s not getting in the team, he’s behind berbatov

he’s not been poor whilst at spurs, he’s got a good scoring record when he’s been played, still the same player that finished high in the goal charts whilst at charlton, whilst not the tallest (5′11″) he can play the target man role

i think he would be worth considering, safer bet than the likes of gomis

  • 43 Guy // May 4, 2008 at 12:37

8 mil max. and do we really need another striker who isn’t better than owen or martins?

  • 44 Mson // May 4, 2008 at 12:46

please get crouch! or gomis if hes to hard to get. Or even better get us 2 highquality creative CMs!

  • 45 jacob // May 4, 2008 at 12:48

    Christ No!

  • 46 ToonDaft // May 4, 2008 at 12:48

i understand what you are saying Irish-Al, however, the point is Spurs are one place above us and are already making strides to secure a better challenge next season (much to our expense, a la Modric and Woody) and if Berba goes, which looks a certainty, they are still selling Bent; that means they are obviously looking at much better quality than Bent to replace Berba - we need to be looking at similar quality if we want to compete with Spurs next season and not fall even further from the pack - we must match the teams above us, or if possible, better them in the transfer market or the divide is going to get even bigger
i understand that KK seems to be getting these players playing much better than Sam was but to remain realistic, these same players have been shoddy for the absolute majority of a season - can they all be trusted for a full season next season? Personally, i feel we need substantial investment if we seriously are looking toward Europe - I just bloody well hope MA hasn’t been biased (tightening the purse strings) by looking at these lot at the end of the season and forgetting the whole picture

  • 47 Tom_Toon // May 4, 2008 at 12:52

    Altidore > Bent, Gomis etc.

  • 48 Toon1978 // May 4, 2008 at 12:56

Thinkin about this properly and realistically maybe we should be gratefull to be linked with these players for the time beeing as much as i would like to see VAN DER VAART or HUNTELAAR it aint going to happen until we can give then CL ffotball.

  • 49 yet_another_indian_toon // May 4, 2008 at 12:59

yea, on the money Toon1978. As I have always said, the current bunch have to play really well, upto their full potential to power into Europe. Then we can promise the new classy players regular CL football.

Since we wont be able to do that, we can look at only aging stars or good players who have fallen into a bit of a rough patch to sign up for the club….

  • 50 geordie in taipei // May 4, 2008 at 13:00

Bents really not been that good the few times i’ve watched him. My mates a Spurs fan, and he’d like to see the back of him so i really hope we go for someone else !

  • 51 yet_another_indian_toon // May 4, 2008 at 13:00

Wishing for Modric,Henry, etc is ludicrous. Can dream, but it wont happen. Henry may sign only if we offer silly money && he is 36 odd && he spent half of the prev season along with the physiotherapist.

  • 52 TooooooN // May 4, 2008 at 13:42

we can spend the money on other players…ashton, roque santa cruz maybe….

  • 53 Dom4Toon // May 4, 2008 at 14:25

Would much rather have dean ashton, or this gomis guy

  • 54 Paul // May 4, 2008 at 14:31

Not a big fan of Bent, but then I don’t see him in action that often, and neither do Spurs fans. I’ve always thought what they paid was ludicrous.
His goals/games ratio is good tho. If KK can sort him into the team, OK, but 6mill. max.

  • 55 Jack // May 4, 2008 at 16:29

He’s no better than what we’ve got.

    Enough said.

  • 56 petworth magpie // May 4, 2008 at 16:40

Tom Toon finally getting on the Altidore bandwagon I see?

Too late for us I’m afraid…

  • 57 Guinea Mag // May 4, 2008 at 16:47

We could possibly lose Owen and Martins in the summer, so would need to bring in replacements as well as an additional stiker to strengthen the squad. However, prefer Crouch to Bent.

It’s so important we finalize the contracts of Owen and Taylor before we lose them both!!!

  • 58 shearer4pm // May 4, 2008 at 16:57

you cant possibly know if gomis is better

u will never know how a player will adapt to the league, he may be “the next drogba” because he plays liike him in france, but some players jus dont adapt

    bent for 8mil tops

  • 59 Bakerman // May 4, 2008 at 17:15

Now that Stoke are promoted to the PL, don’t they have to purchase Amoebi for 4M? If this is so, paying an additional 8M to get Bent doesn’t seem too bad!

  • 60 Lawman // May 4, 2008 at 17:42

    £12m for Bent!!!!!!!
    F*** Me!!!!
If it’s true…. I’d give Wise the £12m and do a Sir Alan on him - YOU’RE FIRED!

I’d take him only if Spurs GAVE US the £12m to take him. If he’s REALLY a £12m player, don’t you think he’d easily fit into a top 4 team let alone Spurs????

Don’t want Spurs rejects!!! Come on, we’re better than this!

  • 61 Dondatta13 // May 4, 2008 at 19:39

    “Newcastle Offer £12M For Bent”

Does that mean we HAVE made a bid …. God I hope not!

  • 62 ScottyT // May 4, 2008 at 20:05

other positions need strengthening before strikers. bent not sure really i thought 16m was way to much and i still think 12m is way too much.

  • 63 Michael // May 4, 2008 at 21:10

Please, get Santa Cruz instead. if we have 12 mil to spend on a striker, be it Cruz, Van Nistelrooy or Berbatov only.

  • 64 geordie till i die // May 4, 2008 at 21:30

OH FELLA’s i see you’ve all heard the nasty runour about Darren Bent. Well i heard this one of FAT SAM’s targets (in the old regime) - as he ws after a left back…….ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

  • 65 scott9 // May 4, 2008 at 22:22

wud be an ok signing i would rather have santa cruz though and i think if we put a big offer in for him we wud get him especially if blakburn miss out on europe

  • 66 dcbashore // May 5, 2008 at 3:01

This is probably paper talk from two years ago.

  • 67 Toon Down Under // May 5, 2008 at 3:51

12 mil for Bent, what a joke! I would rather Bafe Gomis than Bent for that price.

Newcastle must hold onto Martins if Arsenal are sniffing, but If they are going to sell, they should ask for 20mil +, 15 mil is not a enough, & Newcastle would again be fools in the transfer market!

I surprised that nobody has had a look at Pizzaro from Chelsea, could be a Santa Cruz signing for next season, or even Saviola!

  • 68 scott9 // May 5, 2008 at 13:59

actually though guys were all havin ago saying wot a bad signing he would be but i just looked at his goal scoring record to be fair its a great record a goal every 3 games for spurs when he never starts . and 31 goals in 68 games for charlton.

  • 69 chuck // May 5, 2008 at 15:24

Gotta laugh at those who knock Bent then state how much better Gomis is, the truth is probably a tiny minority have ever seen Gomis play, as for Ashton, (an injury prone poor mans Shearer),
plus we allready have one useless platinum blonde striker.
Apart from the rumored weekly pay packet think Bent would be a good prospect for Utd.
He has had a rough ride at spurs, behind Berbatov & Keene, but he`s a proven goalscorer, young, size, could team up Well with either M.O. or Martins .
