Newcastle After Croatian Ivaca Olic

News today that Hamburg are willing to sell their Croatian International midfielder Ivica Olic in the summer.

Ivaca Olic - played 52 times for Croatia

28 year-old Olic is a hugely experienced player who plays on the left-hand side of midfield and he has played for Croatia 52 times scoring 9 goals.

He has been at Hamburg since last summer and has played 34 times for them scoring a massive 15 goals this season.

The transfer fee is said to be around £4M, and that looks a good deal to us. Newcastle and Portsmouth are said to be competing for the Croatia international.

Olic, has been a good goal-scorer all his career and scored in Croatia’s 3-2 win against England last November.

Here is Ivaca’s playing record so far.

Season Club Games Goals

1996–1998 Marsonia 42 17
1998–1999 Hertha Berlin 2 0
1999–2001 Marsonia 42 21
2001–2002 NK Zagreb 28 21
2002–2003 Dinamo Zagreb 27 16
2003–2007 CSKA Moscow 78 35
2007– Hamburger SV 34 15

2002– Croatia 52 9

In 255 first class club games Olic has scored 125 goals - not too bad, one goal every two games, which is a similar record to top goal-scorers like Alan Shearer.

Olic seems a typical Keegan type player - let’s sign him - quickly.

Comments welcome.

Hope he is on Kev’s list. The first signing has to be King’s decision.

Also thought he was a striker, which changes the picture somewhat…

i thought he was a striker too, good player and if we get him he could convince van der vaart to come too(hoping),

  • 11 Gordon // May 5, 2008 at 19:29

keegan has his links with hamburg, and olic is oviously more realistic than VDV and Kompany, but still we may aswell enquire about all of them

  • 13 Petey // May 5, 2008 at 22:14

lol, i would rather a certain other hamburg player by the name of van der vaart, but hey, this guy does score alot of goals in the famous bundesliga, so yea, id take him.

he is a striker, and he’s very fast striker and his name is not Ivaca,it’s Ivica

  • 15 Ausgeordie // May 6, 2008 at 0:23

We need a target man like Crouch or Gudjohnsson. As soon as Smith came on last nigh tto replace Viduka we were shite

  • 16 Oba // May 6, 2008 at 9:34

Don’t want him, and don’t need him. Simple.

  • 17 Eric // May 6, 2008 at 10:06

Checked him out on other sites. In videos he looks like a striker in the Shearer mould. We have just as good if not better in Martins. Bet your boots some other team will come in for him. Why in transfers are we always competing with Pompey. Is that our benchmark. Hope not!
