Kevin Keegan believes that Newcastle United should consider Everton, who will most likely finish 5th this season, as a team they have to overtake in the league – maybe even next season.

David Moyes - great job as Everton manager
Everton need a single point on Sunday to secure fifth position and qualify for the UEFA Cup next season.
There’s no doubt whatsoever that David Moyes has done a great job at Everton with very limited resources, and it should give us hope that Newcastle can shortly finish just beneath the top 4 in the Premier League.
Kevin said at the news conference this morning:
“This club is the fifth biggest club in the country so there’s no reason for me to believe we cannot finish fifth,” “That’s our target next year and it’s a very good target to set ourselves.”
“David Moyes has done a fantastic job at Everton and they are the only team that have broken into that top four in recent years.” “Unfortunately in the following season they finished fairly low down the table because obviously you have more games and need a bigger squad.”
“But with the resources David has got he’s done a great job and it’s up to us to catch them up.” “They are a bit like ourselves in that they haven’t got a big squad, but it proves that it (top four finish) can be done.
“It’s a good test for us on Sunday and it’s very important that we go out there and put in a good performance.”
“We need to take that first-half performance from the Chelsea game and play like that for 90 minutes, if we can do that then you’d have to fancy our chances of getting a result.”
It now looks official that 5th place is our target next year, and that’s great because we’ll need a much improved team to finish just below the top four.
Hey, just think, if we overshoot and do better than we think we’ll do next season - we could even finish in 4th place.
There’s a thought.
Comments welcome.

FIRST!
i think everton is the kind of unit we should be looking to emulate. solid, no nonsense and committed performances from all members of the team. they have no superstars but instead rely on solid team play and a tough defence to win games for them. think we could do the same?

5th is a bit high.
We will finish 9th next season. Id be happy with that aswell.

Don’t be daft mate.
You sound like a fan of Allardyce. That’s what we’d have gotten from him.
You must be crazy…Haway Keegan, Bring ni someone ridiculous.

sounds a bit like KK is trying to make up for his negative comments post CFC game!
“They are a bit like ourselves in that they haven’t got a big squad, but it proves that it (top four finish) can be done.”
if it can be done KK is the man for the job!

We need to sign the following players
David James
Sol Campbell
Danny Mills (to replace Stephen Carr as Beye’s backup)
Wayne Bridge
Kieron Dyer (missed his pace so bad this season)
Darius Vassell
Emile Heskey

agree with KK top 6 anyways.. aim - get a few players in summer to boost squad size and quality then get into europe however possible and hopefully have a good cup run that we are so long overdue
also only 1 ad hv out of them would be bridge at a push. danny mills looool
9 Charlie Bucket // May 8, 2008 at 17:12
No I think we could get those players without spending a great deal of money and they would really boost the squad.
10 ScottyT // May 8, 2008 at 17:17
james - dont need a keeper, ‘calamity james’
campbell - too old and slow now
mills - wtf?

Charlie Bucket - That is the best joke I’ve heard in years. Do you want NUFC to go down or what? I didn’t expect to read the name Dyer again in the same sentence as bringing to NUFC lol.

If we were to maintain the form next season that we have shown over the last few games then we will be right up there in the top four. It’s a big if though.

Reasonable goal for Utd. but not with this present team, no way.
Need a few decent signings as it looks if all the PL teams will be strengthed and will be more competetive.
Its become apparent we will need an additional striker, preferably one with size that our small fast pair can match up with, with the ability to hold up the ball, as Viduka may be out for some time . Like Bent.
Love to get Veloso, to take charge of midfield, plus cuellar looks good in central defence, plus
playmaker McGeady anyone?
Thats my wish list.
20 JJ // May 8, 2008 at 21:08
HAHAHAHA Charlie Bucket nice one…
Here are my five signings I feel are quite realistic (in order of importance):
1 Veloso (CM playmaker) - 16M
2 Cuellar (DC) - 9M
3 Gudjohnssen (ST, hold up and link up) - 8M
4 Ashton (ST, to replace injured Viuduka) - 10M
5 Bridge (LB to compete with Enrique) - 5M
6 Jimmy Bullard (CM) - 2M
Total = 50M
Sell
1 Smith (crap) - 4M
2 Emre (always injured) - 4M
3 Ameobi (just as crap) - 3M
4 Rozenhal (dont wanna be here) - 2M
5 Casapa (not needed) - 1M
6 Ramage - 500 k
7 Carr - 500 k
8 Triosi - 0 k
Total = 15M (so total spent 35M)
Team as follows:
4-4-2
———————-Given/Harper———————
Beye——–Cuellar——-Faye/Taylor——Bridge
Milner——Veloso——Barton—–NZogbia/Duff
——-Owen/Martins—-Gudjohnssen/Ashton—–
4-3-3
———————-Given/Harper———————
Beye——–Cuellar——-Faye/Taylor——Bridge
———————–Veloso/Butt—————-
———Geremi/Milner/Barton/NZobia/Duff———
—————— Gudjohnssen ——————-
—————Owen/Martins—-Ashton————–
Subs: Bullard (quality backup in CM), Carroll, Edgar, Lua Lua, etc.
See, not out out reach and we dont have to go over the top spending 100M like everyone says.
Fifth place would by no means be out of reach!!!!
21 JJ // May 8, 2008 at 21:09
If Nzogbia want to go, replace his name with McGeady!!!

isnt it amazing how the press yet again make a mountain out of a mole hill regarding Keegan…..Could his meeting with Ashley not just be an arranged meeting pulled forward abit…I mean he was always going to meet him one day…Yeah ashley mightve wanted to know what he meant by what he said….But at times the press obviously think us geordies are so thick and cant see reality……..Of course we know where keegan is coming from….All he was saying is that without big investment and time we will never be anywhere near the top four….
Come on Keegan we’re all behind you
23 Eamonn // May 8, 2008 at 22:20
I reckon Keegan will complete a BIG clear out over the Summer and then bring in at least 4 top players. With all the changes maybe 6th is the best we’ll do in 08-09 . But I expect KK to push for 4th the following years, he’s only calming down Ashley/Mort/Fans/Press expectations but in his head I suspect he’s aiming to take us back to the Champions League!!
KK is a born winner, I flew over for the Chelsea game hoping he’d do a walkaround but totally understood why it didn’t happen. Keegan dont want to celebrate failure, total respect to the man, he’s saved our Club for the 3rd time.
24 geordieglen // May 8, 2008 at 22:25
players in
at the back —–cuellar, campbell, bridge
in the middle —veloso,arshavin,walcott,lennon,
up front———-crouch,ashton
carr, ameobi, troisi, rammage gone, so i think these would be good aquisitions and thats only 5 extra in the squad, unrealistic?? i dont think so and i reckon we could get them all here at decent prices, wenger unsure about walcott so i reckon we cud get him here for the right price, the rest all available i think, would transform our squad and im sure we’d blow everton manc villa etc away get europeean footy n build again next year
ps feck the southern journo tramps they’re sh!ttin themselves coz they dont want a team from up here kickin their arses and they know with cashley n king kev we r gonna be a real threat soon
up the toon!!!!!!!!!!!!
25 Leo // May 8, 2008 at 22:35
well funny enough i fully expect newcastle to beat everton but 5th place next season would be absolutely fantastic but i would not be unhappy if we didnt quite make it, just show good progress
26 JC // May 8, 2008 at 23:15
Given
Beye Cuellar Taylor/Faye Bridge
Lennon Veloso Barton Arshavin
Owen/Martins Ashton/Gudjonson
50m but worth it with 1om on outgoings
27 Whitt // May 9, 2008 at 0:48
i like your list, JJ, but Cuellar wouldn’t really cost 9M would he? seems high to me…
28 Oga // May 9, 2008 at 0:54
Most definetely agree. There is no reason why we shouldn’t be fifth. I still firmly believe that we are the only club that stands a chance of breaking the top 4.
29 azim // May 9, 2008 at 5:38
whatever next season ..we must finish ABOVE tottenham …i start to hate them.
30 tapir // May 9, 2008 at 5:46
i read somewhere that we are goin for a keeper and Carson name have been mention..
what do u think
31 Frankie Sedgewick // May 9, 2008 at 7:35
We need to get ‘Calamity’ John from Liverpool LOL…
Other targets should be:
Didier Domi (would be a rock in the back 4…)
Sylvan Wiltord (nothing like a 10th rate Henry to warm the bench…)
Paolo Maldini (one for the future…)
Darren Anderton (ex-spurs legend could hobble up and down the right flank with his walking frame…would make a good partner in crime for D. Duffer)
Serious targets,
Per Ciljan Skelbred (Rosenborg)
Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen)
Per Nilsson (somwhere in Sweden)
Per Jonsson (somewhere in Norway)
Per (Gremio)
