Newcastle United are said to be confident of landing Sol Campbell form Portsmouth this summer.

Sol Campbell - heading to Newcastle United?
Portsmouth confirmed yesterday that the former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal player will leave the club after the FA Cup final next weekend.
Kevin Keegan is said to be a huge fan of the 33-year-old and tried to see if he could sign him in the January transfer window. The news from Newcastle is that they will sign the England International, who has 73 caps for England a two-year contract.
Campbell will be a good acquisition for Newcastle, even though he is getting a little long in the tooth (he turns 34 in September), but his vast experience at the highest levels will be a huge advantage for some of our Newcastle young defensive players like Steven Taylor, David Edgar and Tamas Kadar.
Obviously Sol will be a free transfer and Newcastle will be able to offer him a very good wage package.
One thing we don’t know is whether he still has a Newcastle girlfriend, which will be another positive for us, if he has. A year ago, we wrote that Campbell’s girlfriend was the daughter of a Tyneside businessman, and therefore a move to Newcastle would certainly suit him domestically.
Anybody know of Sol’s current romantic situation?
Sol played 255 games for Arsenal (10 goals), 135 times for Spurs (8 goals) and has played 59 times for Portsmouth (2 goals).
Comments very welcome.

2/3 years too late. With respect it has always been reported that Sol has a different sexual agenda, so not sure about the ” geordie ” girlfriend.

Good, a much better target than the ManC carthorse. I would be as happy as a pig in sh*t if we got him.
3 Obafan // May 8, 2008 at 10:54
Get him perhaps this is the beginning of the good news. much better than Dunne even at this age.
4 ELFER // May 8, 2008 at 10:56
Why getting this old slow man into our back four? Wouldn’t be that happy with him no…
5 Jimmie // May 8, 2008 at 10:56
Why not give him 1 or 2 seasons, would be good for our younger defenders to learn from him.
6 RayNUFC // May 8, 2008 at 10:57
On a free transfer, i can”t argue with that. Yeah it’s prrobably two or three years too late but he will be a good mentor for our young defenders.
7 Bill F // May 8, 2008 at 10:58
Personally I couldn’t care less about his sexual preferences so long as he does the biz on the pitch. I understand that there is a certain aggressive midfielder at the toon of a similar ilk and it seems to work OK as far as the other players are concerned so why should it bother us, unless you are an out an out homophobe.

A good addition and said so the other day. At 33 he has got the experience and solidity that can rub off on Taylor, Edgar and Kadar. Go and get him. Have a chat with Diarra KK while you are at it.

good replacement for ramage.got the experience and ability to play at the top for 2 more seasons [with a younger faster centre half alongside] to nurture.hopefully taylor when he signs a new deal.we could maybe then use faye as a defensive midfielder.thought he did very well there when he played under fat sam a few times.also adds height into midfield which we lack.

As I said in a previous blog some players can slow down a bit as they get older but they compensate by having a bit of footy savvy upstairs and I reckon Sol comes into this category. Not That I think he has lost much of his pace anyway.
11 JenniP // May 8, 2008 at 11:03
As a Pompey fan I dont really see this happening, the director who made these comments has already retracted them, while Sol may leave its more likely he will go to Europe as he did say he wanted to play in a European league before he retires.
Saying that, I think we or anyone who takes him on will be lucky to get another great season from him, although a ok Sol season would still be an major improvement for most clubs.

no way like tenner says if he signs he shares with joey B , careful bending over like tying boot laces like you might trip.
13 James // May 8, 2008 at 11:03
To think that Roeder turned him down when he was 30 for saying he was too old. And now we’ll talk him after everyone else is finished with him.
14 jimmynails // May 8, 2008 at 11:06
hes been around like really likes it on the chin might be a bit rusty like

It was in one of the tabloids at the weekend that he is still with her. It had a pic of her saying that she had critcised Victoria Beckham or something like that. Apparently she is Sir Lawrie Barratts granddaughter.

Hi I am Sols Newcastle girlfriend - I for one hope he signs for Newcastle so that me and Sol ‘Mandingo’ Campbell can enjoy more nights out at Powerhouse and Camp David.
17 Toon boy // May 8, 2008 at 11:14
Dont want him, too old!!!Why would we sign somebody like this when the Tech Director, Manager, Chairmen have openely stated that they want players at the right age!!
Who would he get into the team in place of? Faye and Taylor arguably have been our most consistent performers since KK took over!!
Will Campbell be content with a place on the bench?? Doubt it…………………..
This would be a step back in my opinion……..
18 craig chisholm // May 8, 2008 at 11:16
i think he is good for one year. having said that, who wants him? wise or keegan. chrsit knows whats going on there but to be honest i think kk will either get it his way or he will leave. i am fed up with mort.
19 Hadji // May 8, 2008 at 11:17
Do you honestly think he’ll be here to teach Taylor,Kadar, etc the trade.
Who’s next….Maldini and Ballota.
20 Kash2 // May 8, 2008 at 11:19
the rumour was of him and Lennox Lewis, did anybody here that one?
OK signing, we need 2 centre backs, and to be fair to him he’s probably quicker than all our CB’s anyway as Faye is slow and Taylor isn’t that quick. We do need a very speedy CB however, and I hope we have someone lined up for that!
21 Nick C // May 8, 2008 at 11:19
Alan Hansen might be a good bet Mr Ashley. He has a lot of experience and would also be on a free!
22 Bongo // May 8, 2008 at 11:22
Why would he be a free transfer? He still has 1 year of his contract at Pompey to run?
If they are releasing him from his contract, that would have to make him a Pomepy cast-off?
23 JenniP // May 8, 2008 at 11:29
Looks like your not getting a sniff anyway, this was just posted on the offical Pompey site
http://www.portsmouthfc.co.uk/?cms_id=78&qs_articleid=1205&qs_media=html
Saying that it wouldnt be the last time someone had said that said a player was definately staying only to have them leave the next day.

Sol is not on his way to the Toon. Expect him to turn up overseas…
25 valle // May 8, 2008 at 11:33
Very good deal, especially if its a free transfer… Who cares if he is slow?… We need a guy who can dominate the box especially at set pieces and who knows where to position himself when danger lurks… I expect us to buy at least one more CB tho, as we will lose Roz. Whether that will be Dunne or Alves i dunno.
26 Archie Brand // May 8, 2008 at 11:33
Sorry - should be heading for the glue factory not for St James’
Wise old head only goes so far. I suppose when the likes of Cliche and Lennon and Ronaldo are tear-arsing past him, he’ll probably figure out that he’s been stripped much quicker than the younger inexperienced defenders would.
Keegan’s set up the left and right sides of defence with 2 fast attacking defenders - hence our new flowing style, if they get caught upfield then I doubt if Campbell is the man to hold the fort at the back.
As for his personal preferences, maybe he’s just the man to stop the big boys getting in round the back and hammering balls across.
27 Toony // May 8, 2008 at 11:34
GOD NO!!!!
Campbell is now a has been, bring him in as a coach for the young uns but I would not want him in the first team. Too slow now and any team with a bit of pace up front (almost every premiership team) will zip past him and score before he even turns around.
Ceullar looks class and should be the standard we are looking for not like Nick C just said potential past it BBC pundits!
28 keeganpleasecomeback // May 8, 2008 at 11:34
experience and class - is something he got…and something we need..
Dont know about the girl friend - unless she got a beard and a “duck” thats always been sol’s “girlfriends”
29 ToonDaft // May 8, 2008 at 11:35
i have to ask the question then: why is Harry getting rid? obviously he sees his as surplus to requirements for Pompey, so why would we want him? i thought we were going to be challenging them next season, not fielding players deemed not good enough anymore from them - we are about two years late in this signing imo as I very much doubt Sol would sign in the knowledge that he was going to be a squad player
30 Nick Dryden // May 8, 2008 at 11:37
BILL F . Not homophobic at all. Just pointing out that the mention of a girlfriend to lure him to tyneside was probably wide of the mark.
31 Nobby's dad // May 8, 2008 at 11:38
Portsmouth are apparently looking at Luisao the Brazilian at Benfica - so we get their cast -offs?
32 broon ale // May 8, 2008 at 11:38
who is this agressive midfielder you speak of who is a certian way inclined?
33 Bill F // May 8, 2008 at 11:54
Nick, sorry if that sounded like an accusation or insult it wasn’t intended like that. I should have read the editorial more throughly. Thats the problem when you skim a story.
broon ale, someone some time ago suggested that a player who may be currently involved in a courtcase may be inclined towards the male gender. Of course it may be total rubbish but it was quite a strong rumour.
34 Hadrian // May 8, 2008 at 11:55
not sure about sol, he’s been poor everytime ive watched them this season ,b ut also got some rave reviews when ive not watched them /shrug ,
for free aye , at 100k pw ! no chance !
35 broon ale // May 8, 2008 at 12:06
Bill F- didnt he get arrested with his girlfriend outside a liverpool Mcdonalds?
36 Gordon // May 8, 2008 at 12:09
“Anybody know of Sol’s current romantic situation?”
You keen to date him Ed?!
When he was at Arsenal all the talk in London was that he’s gay!
37 Dondatta13 // May 8, 2008 at 12:15
Sol Campbell had the chance to join NUFC before he turned his nose up at the offer and joined Portsmouth ….. I dont want him!
Dont know if he’s gay mind you, wasnt he in the papers when all his women sussed he was playing them all. One was a middle aged bint! Then he went missing for a week or so to get his head right. Im sure Wenger gave him time off because of it.
Now then … Can I have a B&W Van man pls.
Van der Vaart for the Toon!
38 Bobby Ollox // May 8, 2008 at 12:16
It really doesnt matter - we could get the England back 4 and put them in black and white shirts, and they would play like cart horses. We dont do defenders, unless they can run like stink up the wing.
Anyway - whatever - he is too old - no thanks.
39 ronaldeano // May 8, 2008 at 12:50
He could do a great job with the young un’s and he still has 2-3 more seasons in him, the bloke is a solid CB. For free, get him now!
40 Bill F // May 8, 2008 at 12:51
broon ale I think you have had enough clues, as a certain other gentleman said it’s elementary Mr Watson.
As for Sol being to old I reckon we could assemble a whole team of oldies (30+) who could more than compete in the EPL. I aint suggesting we should go down than road but some oldies aren’t a bad thing.
41 Hadji // May 8, 2008 at 12:52
Soo it wasnts embarasing enough that we were buying top 4 rejects in the past,so now we’re picking up the leftovers from Portsmouth.
Honestly…nothing can suprise me anymore.
MA..you know what,i would rather be like Roman sitting by himself instead you mixing up with the fans on the games.
You have a big body MA but you aint got balls.
42 Bill F // May 8, 2008 at 13:05
Off course the gay allegations could be a load of tosh, similar to the ex-Chelsea full back who faced the same thing and he was a straight down the middle heretrosexual but he got some real stick on the pitch because of the rumours. God I’m starting to sound like a bloo*y tabloid journalist. Some one tell me to shut up please.
43 seetow // May 8, 2008 at 13:21
raul albiol anyone? quick defender if i saw one.. better than this old carthouse imo and he plays fantastically for valencia. still young too! i think he’s like 23 or something..
44 dave // May 8, 2008 at 13:28
bill you must be stupid if you think sol is better than dunne,it proves you dont watch football
45 Bill F // May 8, 2008 at 13:46
Thank you Dave not quite what I had in mind though.
So do you actually think they are both rubbish or do you think Dunne would really be a good buy. If so I am more than happy to return the compliment back to you. In spades.
46 newcastlefan // May 8, 2008 at 15:24
BILL F, who is gay that plays for the toon?
47 geordie nick // May 8, 2008 at 15:58
newcastlefan he was talkin about joey barton, its a load if sh*t as when he got arrested for fightintit was because someone spat at his girlfriend tht he kicked off
48 faustino // May 8, 2008 at 17:05
Never going to happen… his wages demands would be ridiculous!
49 scott9 // May 8, 2008 at 17:50
woud be a perfect signing if we cud get him however i wud prefer dunne if it was one or the other but i wud be more than happy to take both haha
50 Ian // May 8, 2008 at 18:29
Hope his wages are sensible if he does arrive here.
51 Bill F // May 8, 2008 at 19:31
I think it was his brothers girl friend, however I could be wrong.
52 Leo // May 8, 2008 at 21:36
i thought u were talking about jermain jenas at first bill f haha.
we need to improve the size our squad therefore he would be good on a free a better option than playing 5 mil for dunne for sure.
we however need a fast strong defender in the mould of micah richards, im not saying specifically him but someone like him.
53 robertsa // May 8, 2008 at 22:14
not happy with this one kev. keep to your main target - cuellar
54 Elliott // May 8, 2008 at 22:15
Would be an amazing signing if only for what he’d do for our young players.
Desailly was a bit rubbish at Chelsea but Terry credits him for a vast chunk of his education.
I still think Sol has something to offer in the 1st team.
Positive!
55 Oga // May 9, 2008 at 0:37
Yeah I wouldn’t complain if he came on a free for a year. As long as we were to sign another centre back.
56 Lawman // May 9, 2008 at 2:15
Good squad player to have for “free”.
Should be ok for next season at 33/34yo but a 2 year contract would mean he’ll be 35 almost 36 by the time his contract runs out. Too old to be first team regular at 34 nevermind 35.
57 jeffa // May 9, 2008 at 8:12
were did you get the information from that we are closing in on him ?
