Newcastle Face Stiff Competition for Lennon

Thursday May 8th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 50 Comments

It’s reported today that three clubs Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester City will all be in the battle to sign 21 year-old impressive winger Aaron Lennon from Spurs.

Aaron Lennon - Spurs winger available

The Manchester Evening news are reporting that Lennon will be allowed to leave White Hart Lane this summer, as new Spanish boss Juande Ramos will bring in some other player for the right side of midfield.

The reports say that Aaron will favor a move to Liverpool (surprise, surprise) and will certainly not consider any move to Eastlands, until a new manager is appointed to replace Sven Eriksson.

jermaine-pennant.jpg

Jermaine Penannt - good buy for Newcastle?

But Newcastle could do a lot worse than taking Jermaine Pennant from Liverpool, since his chances of first team football will be further reduced should Lennon join the Reds.

We feel Pennant could do well in a Kevin Keegan attacking side, and that Kevin could bring the best out in the player, who certainly has considerable skills.

We really don’t see too much difference in the skills between the two players.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    NOOOOO!
    both of them are crap!
milner is better than both of them!
better off “attempting” to sign SWP

  • 2 Nobby's dad // May 8, 2008 at 11:25

In all honesty I cannot think of a more overated player than Lennon. He’s like Ketsbia on speed!

  • 3 Kash2 // May 8, 2008 at 11:28

Milner is not better than both of these players. Milner tries hard but he doesn’t have the end product. If Milner is so good, why isn’t he in the England squad?

  • 4 ToonDaft // May 8, 2008 at 11:28

    SWP please!!!

  • 5 Charlie Bucket // May 8, 2008 at 11:28

Wesley Ngo Baheng has been ruled out for up to a year with a knee ligament injury.

Baheng had a big reputation when he joined Newcastle United but struggled to find his form in the reserves in a miserable season culminating in a sending off against Manchester United.

  • 6 Nev // May 8, 2008 at 11:34

kash2 - when was the last time either of them was in the the england squad ?
i live in liverpool and everyone cant wait to see the back of pennant for one simple reason , he is shite
and the majority of my mates who support spurs say the exact same about lennon as we do about milner but puts no effort in and relies on his ego rather than skill
in all honesty id like bentley .. but i see no need splashing £15m+ on someone and then play 4-3-3

  • 7 Nobby's dad // May 8, 2008 at 11:34

Baheng….don’t know where you got the ‘he had a big reputaton Charlie B. I go to some of the reserve games and I think he’s very poor. No way will he make it IMO

  • 8 valle // May 8, 2008 at 11:40

Lennon looks very dangerous when he attacks the right and i would love us to buy him, he is certainly head and shoulders above Milner… KK could do wonders with him

  • 9 Nick Dryden // May 8, 2008 at 11:44

Shocking final ball. Speed is great if you know what to do with it.

  • 10 Eric // May 8, 2008 at 11:46

Go for Wright Phillips. Pennant won’t come and Lennon couldn’t pass pee. Our priority is a LB and cannot think of one in the EPL who would come. The way some of these prima donnas carry on you would think Newcastle is a leper colony.

  • 11 HeronMag // May 8, 2008 at 11:51

LOL Nobby’s Dad - Ketsbaia on speed!? Get him in. I’d love to see that haha!

  • 12 HeronMag // May 8, 2008 at 11:53

PersonalltyI’d like SWP, but Pennant is talented and Lennon can be devastating on his day.

Keegan could make any of them play well.

  • 13 THELONGSHANKS // May 8, 2008 at 11:55

i would prefer jaoquin(4m),bentley(15m) or kranjaer(10m hes left but can play right). If we buy squad players we will not move on.lb has to be bridge(6m) shorey(4m) or riise(3m).

  • 14 Taiwantoon // May 8, 2008 at 12:06

Pennant is not the way foward IMO. He fails to hold down a regular place as he is not consistent. At the age of 26 and considering his style of play, I doubt how much he could still improve.

Hvae a mixed feeling about Lennon. He looked fantastic several years ago, but seems to be strggling to deliver the end products likes our very own Milner.

  • 15 Gordon // May 8, 2008 at 12:07

    Pennant is AWFUL Ed!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 16 michael // May 8, 2008 at 12:09

It’s a testament to the English press, that having destroyed the career of the greatest crosser/dead ball specialist in the world over the last 20 years, they have now moved on to the speedy wingers they so yearned for. Surely reason must dictate that at 21yrs old, the likes of Lennon and Milner are far too early to be judged. Neither will really improve unless they get an extended run in the Premiership, something that will not happen at Liverpool, so from a footballing point of view it would be best to see him here.

    …thats more like it

  • 18 milovan // May 8, 2008 at 12:44

THELONGSHANKS - where’d you hear that Joaquin would be available for £4m? he cost Valencia four times that just 2 years ago, surely they’d want more…

  • 19 Oba // May 8, 2008 at 12:49

Both crap, don’t need a winger anyway. We’ve got Milner.

  • 20 ronaldeano // May 8, 2008 at 12:55

    Joaquin………?

We would have a good chance of getting him and he is a very good player, i dont care what anyone says

  • 21 Rich // May 8, 2008 at 13:21

Ye Joaquin for me to, KK could turn his form back around, the guys immense on his day!

  • 22 John // May 8, 2008 at 13:53

Michael very good point..think people forget what age these guys actualy are and what real potential they have..id be happy with milner or Lennon..Masses of potential that surely fit in with the new newcastle strategy

  • 23 Peter Hughes // May 8, 2008 at 14:06

Pennant is awful, he is reallt rotten. I would be devasted if we got him. Joaquim is a wonder player and any chances of us gettting him are null and void. It’s gonna be a long long summer as teams we should be better than sign better players than us. If Jonathon (please kkep my shirt waiting for me) Woodgate turns us down for spurs and so does modric for less money, what chance do we have…..we’ll end up signing clowns like sidwell,Hunt and brian Mcbride. I’m not looking forward to the tranfer window opening one bit. Still hurts so so much o think Modric signed for spurs and not us.

  • 24 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 8, 2008 at 14:11

get over the modric buisness, we have made a concrete offer for miguel veloso

  • 25 ToonKing // May 8, 2008 at 14:21

if were all ready talking about wingers….. some paper linked us with him today…..get ready….. Zoltan Gera of WBA. he would be a perfect buy for is. He isn’t the fastest but he’s delivery is great and can score too, he can also play in Owen’s current position. He is/was the best player in the Coca Cola IMO so i say get him in, a possibly cheap and very good player.

  • 26 Ashton // May 8, 2008 at 14:29

I think we don’t need wingers anymore with our 433 formation Geremi is playing more defensive role like a RDM !

  • 27 aaron d // May 8, 2008 at 14:39

being linked to kaboul and veluso now

  • 28 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 8, 2008 at 14:47

kaboul is qaulity i think, i dont know why he doesnt start for spurs, keegan has called the interview a day early hasnt he.

  • 29 Tom_Toon // May 8, 2008 at 14:48

    Both are crap.

Get Oleg Huysev from Dynamo Kiev, quick, has a brilliant cross and can also fill in at CM or RB.

Kaboul was quality in France. Veloso is just quality.

  • 30 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 8, 2008 at 14:57

tom toon- is that veloso your refering to as crap or zoltan gera, as you said “BOTH”

  • 31 LyNX18 // May 8, 2008 at 14:59

Pennant is awful!!!! Come on, get some one really capable to play in Newcastle Utd!!!

  • 32 Tom_Toon // May 8, 2008 at 15:10

No, Pennant and Lennon are both crap.

  • 33 Cloudstrife // May 8, 2008 at 15:13

Pennant is awful. i wouldnt particularly like Lennon but he is much better than Pennant. i believe we need a right winger to challenge Milner and force him to improve his game.

however a more pressing need would be on the other wing. the Zog is on his way out and Duff is past it. i saw Arshavin in the UEFA cup and he looks pretty decent.

  • 34 Yahya Ahmad // May 8, 2008 at 15:54

Imagine our midfield was like this:

Aaron Lennon , Miguel Veloso , Jaoquin , Aiden Mcgeady

  • 35 Hamas (51times) // May 8, 2008 at 16:08

    Joaquin is a winger…

  • 36 christopherbunton // May 8, 2008 at 16:36

Lennon is a GREAT player, much better than SWP, Pennant and Milner. He’s quick, skillful but most of all he’s got a great footballing brain, anyone who doesn’t rate him doesn’t know football.

  • 37 scott9 // May 8, 2008 at 17:53

i think either wud be a good signing wud rather have lennon but pennant wud be a great signing defo a keegasn type player he would definatley get the best out of him

  • 38 Oba // May 8, 2008 at 18:17

Yahya Ahmad lol. Why change the whole of the midfield around, and three of them don’t even have any EPL experience, and speak three different languages.

Barton will be in the midfield next year, but if we play three then I don’t see Butt and Geremi there like they have been under KK recently.

Also, some of our apparent targets are stupid. Joaquin??Veloso?? Heh.

  • 39 e // May 8, 2008 at 18:18

“Get Oleg Huysev from Dynamo Kiev” tom_toon mate stop kidding your self, you aint a professional scout, how many times have u came up with players names that no one has heard of and you claim they are better than most prem players like you know it all,

  • 40 e // May 8, 2008 at 18:21

lets get Mehhembubula Tamokilaidolk from Fc Creeta, he is only 14 and has great speed and and can play GK, CM, and LB, get him now before Halifax snap him up, hes better than gerrard

  • 41 Tom_Toon // May 8, 2008 at 18:26

Yes but Husyev has about 50 caps for his country and has played in the champions league.

  • 42 Leo // May 8, 2008 at 21:47

swp would be much better, although keegan cud get lots out of both lennon and pennant nuff said

  • 43 IrishMan // May 8, 2008 at 21:59

Does he come with a free pair of gloves?

  • 44 Elliott // May 8, 2008 at 22:20

    SWP, Bentley or Jaouquin

    Pass on these 2.

  • 45 Oga // May 9, 2008 at 0:42

Pennant is the best crosser in the premier league! However he does lack pace and rarely beats a player. Ability wise, he is miles ahead of Milner, however Milner has the perfect attitude while Jermaine is the complete opposite. Having said that, he has calmed down a lot.

Lennon is one of the best in the league, at dribbling at very fast speeds. However he has no end product. I would again say he is an upgrade on Milner.

Whatever the case, we do require more competion on the right hand side.

  • 46 richie // May 9, 2008 at 1:11

is this fact or pure speculation?spurs are hardly going to let lennon go..are they??

  • 47 Lawman // May 9, 2008 at 1:44

Got rid of Bellamy, Dyer and Bowyer….. why on earth would we now want Pennant????

And Oga, if you want a good crosser of the ball, then we should go for Bentley - NOT Pennant.

  • 48 richie // May 9, 2008 at 1:50

    would bentley sign for us??

  • 49 Nobby's dad // May 9, 2008 at 7:33

christopherbunton…….Lennon has a great footballing brain anyone who doesn’t rate him doesn’t know football. I’m sorry but if you rate him highly it’s you who doesn’t know football. He’d be my definition of a brainless footballer.

He’s like a headless chicken…..absolutely NO final product. I think Ramos knows football and he obviously doesn’t rate him.

  • 50 ChrisL // May 9, 2008 at 14:54

Both are crap, give me someone that can cross a ball.
