Good information in the Daily Telegraph today about how much merit money each team gets according to their finishing position in the Premier League this season.

Each position in the Premier League is worth £720K, and it looks like Newcastle will finish in 12th position and receive £6.48M.
Here is the full table.

The lowest Newcastle can finish is 13th position and we’d get £5.76M.
£6M isn’t too much but with the TV rights and sponsor deals included add at least £30M to that figure at least - and graduated between the top and bottom teams.
Again, we point out that the top clubs get more money than the bottom clubs because they finish higher - so the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. That’s not even to mention the many clubs in the lower leagues, who are having a hard time just existing.
That inevitably leads to a few clubs over time being so rich that other clubs cannot compete, and that’s exactly what’s happened, and what Keegan was pointing out last Monday.
In fact in the 16 seasons since 1992, when the Premier League has been in existence, only 4 clubs have won the Title - Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Blackburn.
And Blackburn won it only once.
That’s what Kevin’s point was when he said the league was boring.
To prove it, we know right now that next season the winners will be between Man United, Arsenal or Chelsea.
It’s a 3 team league because Liverpool have never won the Premier League, and are perennially 4th in the league in any case.
And of course the top teams in the European Champions League get huge amounts of additional revenue each year too.
What Kevin said last Monday was the absolute truth - although it may be something the PL executives don’t want to hear.
They defended the entertainment value league because Kevin used the word boring - but that wasn’t really the right word, and he meant boring because we know Blackburn - and 16 other teams in the PL that include Newcastle, have no chance whatsoever of winning the league next season. That’s a fact.
Comments welcome.

As we’ve been discussing earlier, with the tv rights and sponsor deals arranged by the FA you can add £30 million to that figure at least (more like £35 mill) which dwarfs the merit awards imo.
Or is that for MO’s wages for a year lol.

not to bad

I think that the powers that be are worried about the fans reaction to Kev’s message about not making the top 4. They don’t need to worry, the true fans kind of knew that already. Also, Kev will be saying these things to dampen down over-optimism, but I guarantee that his team talks before the games will involve telling the players that they can beat any team on their day, and the sky is the limit.

I pretty much agree, although I don’t think it’s *impossible* to break into the top 4.
To do so would need a club with a manager at least as good as the Ferguson, Grant/Jose or Wenger, an owner willing to back that manager through everything (except maybe relegation of course) for 3-4 seasons and invest £100’s of millions in the process.
Not many clubs will do that that. Managers get sacked regularly and accountants or shareholders often reign in even very rich owners.

well if we were to go by entertainment value fair enough manu should get alot of money, but then what about chelsea they may be high up the table but they are such a bore to watch
i think it should be equal and not to do with what position your club finish, the big clubs already get more because they are on sky and setanta more than the lower teams therefore that would be fairer

Yeah i guess it stinks that the top four keep getting stronger and richer, but we were top four once upon a time and i doubt anyone would be complaining about the unfairness of it all if we were still there ed?!

Give the champions an automatic Champions League spot and make the 4 below have a premiership version of the playoff’s for two CL spots. The loosers then get the Uefa cup spots. That way over 5 years or so you’d expect plenty of different sides getting the benifit of Champions League experience and also the additional revenue to keep things on a equal footing. It’d also free up another CL spot for the FA Cup, which would really bring that trophy back to priority it should be for clubs to go for.

We were top four until Freddie decided that he’d save himself some shillings and just get Lee Bowyer on a free after qualification for the Champions League in Summer 03. I still shiver when I hear the words PARTIZAN BELGRADE. Then after sacking SBR after finishing 5th in 03-04 (and UEFA Semi-finalists, I had myself two UEFA Cup final tickets in my back pocket out in the Velodrome
) he decides to employ Mr Souness, bye bye top 4. Souness dismantled Robsons team just like Daglish/Gullit did Keegans entertainers. Now if only Keegan had handed over to Sir Bobby back in 97…

Eamonn , you are so right , but I do wonder sometimes if the 08 KK is as fresh and adventurous as the 95 KK was ? We need to be bringing on the likes of Carroll and some of the youngsters more quickly . Fergie would ….
