HT: Everton 1 Newcastle 0 - Magpies Still In It

Newcastle were a goal down at the break at Goodison Park today, due to a Yakubu headed goal, and it looks like as the game has progressed Everton have been getting more and more on top.

Newcastle made a reasonably good start to the game, and in the opening period Charles N’Zogbia was prominent for Newcastle.

For the first 30 minutes the play was fairly even but Everton were starting to get on top.

After 27 minutes, Newcastle missed a wonderful opportunity to take the lead, when N’Zogbia got in a great low cross, but there was no Newcastle player anywhere near the ball.

But Everton had been starting to get on top of things at Goodison, on a beautiful sunny day, and they went ahead when Newcastle gave away a soft goal. :(

On 29 minutes there was a free kick given to Everton, for which Duff received a yellow card for his foul on Pienaar.

Pienaar himself took the free kick, and he found Yakubu in the penalty area, and the Nigerian rose high to easily head the ball home, giving Harper no chance.

Yakubu was unmarked and just 8 yards from goal, so there will be lots of questions asked about our defensive marking but it was a poor goal to give away. This was similar to Ballack’s goal on Monday afternoon, where he was also completely unmarked.

After 36min Anichebe played a great backheel to Fernandes, which put him clear, and his curling shot was very well saved by Steve Harper, who was at full stretch.

After 2 minutes of added time, the half time whistle goes and Everton lead 1-0 at the break.

Newcastle are still in this game, but they will have to move up to another gear, if they are not to end the season with two successive defeats.

Where are you guys watching the game? Do you have a good live commentary Sites?

  • 14 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:19

Century radio ( not digital) prefer the commentary on there to radio Newcatle which I belive is on digital radio.

  • 15 Toon Al // May 11, 2008 at 16:21

    FOOTY DOCTOR IS UP NOW!

  • 16 Toon Al // May 11, 2008 at 16:22

  • 18 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:24

Zog sounds like he’s gonna be up for Toon’s MOTM.

  • 19 Rob Kirton // May 11, 2008 at 16:28

Ausgeordie: Sorry to say that the best coverage is probably from Century radio or radio Newcastle (my choice)

Unfortunately that nice Aussie guy Rupert Murdoch prevents the commentary from being broadcast over the net. Have a word next time you see him….

  • 20 Tom4NUFC // May 11, 2008 at 16:29

    Aww ffs!!!! Smith got booked

  • 21 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:30

Cacapa big mistake but he’s not had much 1st team play what do we expect.

However I believe KK is making a point about our squad but with us at 1-1 it may have back fired lmao.

  • 22 Tom4NUFC // May 11, 2008 at 16:31

No Europe for us next year now smith is booked

  • 23 ende // May 11, 2008 at 16:34

” Alan Smith, Michael Owen (c), Alan Smith”

Wow, that’s gotta piss off some fans. The people are calling for Smith’s head and management just ups and clones the bloke and puts both clones on either side of Owen??? What a slap in the face!!!

  • 24 Terry // May 11, 2008 at 16:34

66 - BOOKING : Smith is booked for a late lunge on Pienaar.

    Same old Smithy!

  • 25 Tom4NUFC // May 11, 2008 at 16:34

    aww ffs 2-1 everton

  • 26 Chate // May 11, 2008 at 16:34

thats on the actim stats which is just 2 points for a red and one for a yellow. I dont think the premier league use that system, they have their own very complex system.

Its a system with a max of 30points per game, which taken into account cards, positive play, respect for opposition and officials etc. In this league we are 14th and 43 points behind city and just cant catch em.

    http://www.premierleague.com/p…..06,00.html

    We aint qualifying through fairplay

  • 27 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:35

Fulham have scored, that could keep them in the prem.

  • 28 Ausgeordie // May 11, 2008 at 16:36

    Crap another goal

  • 29 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:38

Doesn’t sound like Owen’s done much again this half except score from the penalty spot.

    Another great save Harper.

  • 30 Soren // May 11, 2008 at 16:39

Sounds like Harper has one hell of a game!!! Give him a new contract!

  • 31 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:41

    Come on Carroll SCORE

  • 32 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:42

I agree Soren, motm for Harper even though he’s had 2 goals scored against him.

    Good LuaLua on for Enrique.

    Birmingham down with Reading

  • 65 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 16:58

Well thats it EPL season over and it’s again been a huge dissapointment however our only good thing so far is KK returning and lets hope that he can strenghten the squad this summer and make a real bid to get in the top half of the league if not 5th place and European football.

Come on Ashley back your manager or I can see trouble ahead for you.

  • 66 tapir // May 11, 2008 at 17:00

thanks ashley for all the motivation on Friday

    benn. LOL!

  • 70 Mad_Magpie // May 11, 2008 at 17:04

Thank god this season is over. We can learn a lot from Everton, they outplayed us today and will be playing in Europe next season and deservedly so. Great entertainment elsewhere - Birmingham and Reading both thrashing other teams and still going down. United deserve to be champions.

  • 71 YongMalaysia // May 11, 2008 at 17:05

    wow, midde win city 8-1

season is over now lets go into hibernation until it starts again lol

  • 77 ppg // May 11, 2008 at 17:13

NO, it,s true. Go to http://www.premiership.co.uk/
and open statistic and pick up disciplionary. Man city was ahead of us but Dunne was sent off. So we are next to the Uefa spot. Check this mate

  • 78 Chate // May 11, 2008 at 17:14

city got the place, even with the sending off.

its not up on the site yet but sky sports and bbc five live got the news

gna be tough in the summer, with all our transfer rivals in europe

  • 79 Pete // May 11, 2008 at 17:14

Blessing in disguise , not good enough by a long way. Duff and Smith are pinching themselves god knows what they are on a week, 70k? Emre get rid, 65k ? waste of space.
Geremi not good enough anymore, Diatta, Cacapa, Rozenhal…
All in the wrong stage of their careers, picking up big cheques, Nicky Butt excluded.

  • 80 Rich // May 11, 2008 at 17:25

    @ppg

It’s not just the disciplinary table that matters, it’s decided by the fair play table, in which we’re quite low.

    http://www.premierleague.com/page/FairPlayTable/

  • 81 ScottyT // May 11, 2008 at 17:25

man city fulham west ham wigan pompey reading all ahed of us man

  • 82 Rich // May 11, 2008 at 17:27

Has it been confirmed that City definitely got it then, even with the yellow and red? Here’s hoping they messed up enough for Fulham to qualify…

  • 83 Chate // May 11, 2008 at 17:31

bbc five live said that they didnt have the figures but it had been confirmed by the premier league.

we did ok for cards but our negative play (not sure why that comes into it, but ta anyway big sam) and lack of respect for the officials (butt , barton and smith please stand up) screwed us over

  • 84 ObaFan2 // May 11, 2008 at 17:33

Yep though Fulham were behind City for the spot and Hammers behind them, we’ve no chance.

  • 85 Rich // May 11, 2008 at 17:35

    Oh arse.

Today made me really want us to bid for Bullard, wasn’t even at his best today but took a great free kick, was 100% committed and very clever both on and off the ball. Unfortunately results today mean that a more substantial offer would be needed to prise him away…
