The Times and George Caulkin have a good article out this morning, indicating negotiations on a new contract with Michael Owen’s representatives is underway.

Michael Owen - contract negotiations underway
It’s no secret now that Newcastle will be lowering their wage bill to manageable proportions, and it looks like the £115K/week Michael is on will need to be reduced.
Michael has only started 41 times in his 3 seasons at the club, and has appeared as a sub 6 times and scored 20 goals. That return hardly deserves the wage packet (£18M over 3 seasons) or the £17M Newcastle paid Real Madrid for him in transfer fees.
But if the club does offer him a basic wage of £80K/week Michael could make that up by some bonuses, such as a goals bonus, or even appearance bonuses, given his injury record over the last 3 years.
Newcastle’s contract negotiators are Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez and they will attempt to get a deal made fairly quickly.
We would love it, if Michael Owen signs a contract quickly, and that would give everybody a lift at the club.
We’ll just hope for the best right now.
Comments welcome.

When he signs it will be the best signing we make all summer, and be a huge V’s up to all the media.
He’s become a great captain for the team on and off the field. But also seemes to have developed into a true “fan” of the Toon. He is often the first player to run and congratulate other scorers, and celebrates like the rest of us.
Owen is the heatbeat of KK’s side and will lead us into Europe next season

Poor bug*er how is he going to manage on that.
4 Obafan // May 14, 2008 at 9:59
Let us hope for a good ending on this. And after that I hope the board starts to give a new contract to Oba, cause he will be also very important for us in the upcoming seasons.

We need to sign up Owen / Martins / Taylor on new longtern contracts soonest!!
When they put pen to paper, that is when the media (In particular the Tossa’s at the Daily Mail) can write anything they want about us, it doesnt matter!
Yes SPYRO/DRAGONER, Taylor as well!! See your prediction once upon along ago that Cacapa was the best defender at the club, taylor the worst, has fallen dramatically by the wayside!!
7 ronaldeano // May 14, 2008 at 10:04
The Sun (skumbag newspaper) recons Faye and N’zogbia had to be pulled apart before the Everton game in a row over wages!!!!! They are also loving the fact that Spurs are going to bid for Bentley!
BOYCOT THIS PATHETIC NORTHERN HATING PAPER PLEEEEEEEEESE!

13 Matthew Tom // May 14, 2008 at 10:44
Sorry this is all a bit negative, but …
I’d be amazed if he stays any longer than the end of his current deal. Numerous clubs will offer him £120,000 a week and we are fools to impose a salary cap (assuming it’s true) if we want to compete at the top level. The extra £40,000 a week amounts to £10 million over 5 years and Michael Owen is not a financial idiot - someone will pay him that. He’s got one more big contract left in his career and I fully expect him to follow the money.
I would LOVE it (of course) if he proves me wrong.
14 Toon Boy // May 14, 2008 at 10:54
Mathew Tom- Who are the “numerous clubs” who can afford to pay him 120000 a week???
before you respond, bare in mind that MO has stated that he will never play abroad again!! He give it a go once, it wasnt for him!! His words……….
So I await your response about Numerous clubs????????
15 Stami // May 14, 2008 at 11:02
Owen has only got a few seasons left in him, he is a fantastic player, and im sure a number of clubs would have him as Mathew Tom stated, but not at 120000 a week mate! His injury record is a major factor! Im not saying he isnt worth that much, im saying it would be a gamble for any club to sign him and have him sit on the bench injured for that wage!
Owen will stay at the Toon till he is too old to play! the end
16 Julio Geordio // May 14, 2008 at 12:01
To get Owen to sign another contract so soon into the summer would be a welcome coup and a boost for the club, not only for the present players but for potential buys.
Got to say it has only been this season that I’ve started to appreciate his skills, but obviously that has a lot to do with his horrendous injury record. He can make his new playing role his own and spearhead next season for us.
With regards to N’Zogbia, the sooner he goes the better. I didn’t think there would be anything worse than a welsh gobby big-timing player, but there is…….a french gobby big-timing player.
I wish Faye would have chinned him and then got his Zog’s contract.
17 Angryman the Angry fan // May 14, 2008 at 12:05
Julio Geordieo, I agree 110%!!
Zog the frog is a trouble making little Merde tete and the quicker they get rid the better!!!
And Zoggy fans, dont be coming on here with the “how do you know for certain this is going on behind the scenes” Like you lot I dont, but as the old saying goes, no smoke without fire, and there is alot of smoke surrounding the little ungratefull frog prat boy!!!!!
Get rid now KK before the little Merde undermines every frigga!!
Angry over and f***ing ouT!
18 Spot The Zebra // May 14, 2008 at 12:16
I dont believe one of the top 4 will come in for Michael. The problem is however if we now have an uncomfirmed wage ceiling of £80,000 a week then we have allowed the likes of Man City and Everton to compete with us for his signature.
Both of these teams will not only be able to offer around £70,000 per week but also a North West base and, in Evertons case, European competition. There is a strong chance we will lose our only true World Class player ths summer.
I totally agree our total wage bill is too much however there is a better way to reduce it than what has been suggested this week.Surely instead of limiting ourselves to a wage ceiling we can be more selective to who we offer good wages to in the future.
I think it makes sense to give players what they are worth and in my opinion Owen is worth more than what he is rumoured to be offered this week.As before i believe Michaels new position will mean he has less injury prolems as he no longer comes up against big centre halves for 90 minutes.
Move the likes of Smith and Emre on if need be but lets keep the ones that do the business on the pitch. For instance Smith could easily be replaced by Carroll and Emre by LuaLua, both of the younger players being on considerably less money.
Id hate to think that fantastic headed goal against the Mackems will be the last thing we can remember Owen by.
19 Leo // May 14, 2008 at 12:40
cant kapo also play left wing, so if it is true about nzogbia and he leaves kapo would be a useful replacement
although i think its sh1t stering by the press to make us turn on him….

if calling a frenchman a frog is racist then 90% of the poulation should be held to account for racism!!
And as I have already told one of your alter ego’s, calling a jewish lad Hitler is just plain F***in sick, and drops way way way down to the bottom of the racism barrel!!
70% of my friends from uni are either Black, mixed race or asian, i also have a lot of gay friends of both sexes!! Oh and yes, 2 of my friends are french, and calling the froggy twats often brings a smile to their faces!! that is a fact, so get off yer f**kin high horse, stop likening me to Hitler, and come on here (A football Blog) and talk F**kin football, otherwise piss off to your PC brigade headquarters and stay there!! Lads lads lads, i dont want to jump into a none football argue ment on a footy blog, but i have to totally disagree with the boyos on here who are saying calling the french frogs or froggies or whatever, is racist!! Utter Bollox! Saying it is racist is very PC, and I have to agree with the odd thing angry man says! If we call Viduka an Aussie or Shay a paddy or mick is this racist??? I think not and i dont think they would think so either, so to call someone racist for that is very very saddening, and sums up the state of this country when people pull the racist card for something so trivial!! Punk skunk, i think you need to chill mate and maybe take that acid cap angry man has been instructed to write on ….
Anyway, Nzoggy must go, he is obviously a disruptive influence, and doesnt want to be here so get rid of the young frenchman!!!

Punk Skunk, I am 38 year old, I have been going to NUFC matches since i was 12 matey, missing only 5 home matches in all that time, one of which was due to me getting married. (traditional Jewish wedding, would you like some photo’s) i have hundreds of friends from uni, as i did go to uni from the age of 18 to 22 years of age!! Are you keeping up or will i do the maths for you? i dont have to lie about friends ethnicity as I am not at all racist and what indeed would I gain from lying about my friends?
So I suggest you take a step back take deep breaths and get on with YOUR life, and stop worrying about me calling French the frogs, australians aussies, south africans (I have 4 mates from SA) Boks, it all is the same to them and me, as they would call me limey, honkey and yiddo!!!

…What you say to your friends is all well & good mate, but this is a public forum!..
45 Angryman the Angry fan // May 14, 2008 at 15:47
Punk skunk, public forum, but you are the only one accusing me of racism!!!!!!!!!!!!
Which is blatantly wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
46 macitect // May 14, 2008 at 15:52
punk skunk - yes this is a public forum, but that’s not the debate here. The debate remains whether calling french people “frogs” is racism or not. I am sure that 99% of frenchies would agree that it is not in any way offensive. Comes from our appreciation of “cuisses de grenouilles” actually. Like calling a german a “kraut” (dad’s german so don’t try calling me out on that either…) - comes from our appreciation of sauerkraut. Not racism, slang.
Anyways, saying that the way you act with friends and the way you act on a public forum should be different is a sad statement on today’s society. It’s calling people to be untrue. “Be one way in one circumstance and another way in another…” or “You’re allowed to think or speak in anyway you please - even if it is totally wrong - but DO NOT show your true colours in public.” How would we ever really get to know each other?! Debate is dead?
Someone already made reference to Hitler. One thing that characterised his “reign” was that people were unable to say in public what they really thought and felt. Scary parallels with today’s Britain, actually…
I respect angryman’s integrity - he says that he speaks like this amongst his real-world friends and he speaks like it here. Nothing to hide.

52 macitect // May 14, 2008 at 16:21
Punk Skunk - conceded, mate. Your point is true and valid, I simply get really sick of how it can be taken way too far. Here in canada pc rhetoric has gone so far that it really is like a totalitarianism of sorts. If - heaven forbid - anyone lets a little candour slip in public the media go immediately into a “moral high ground” frenzy. It just gets so frustrating… I for one will step back out of this “argument” now, just wanted to bring another POV, from someone of very mixed racial background.
As ScottyT reminds us this is about football and the toon. I am in no way saying that all us football fans are uncouth goons, but I certainly didn’t expect to find such sensitivity (to a remark that calls us frenchies “frogs”) here of all places.
BOT - I have always thought that MO’s loyalties have been unfairly questioned. I think he is class, on and off the pitch. I hope he redeems my faith in his integrity and stays at SJP even if it means “taking one for the team”.
