Newcastle Interest in Birmingham’s Olivier Kapo

Wednesday May 14th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 54 Comments

News today that Newcastle may be interested in Birmingham’s midfielder Olivier Kapo.

olivier-kapo.jpg

Olivier Kapo - midfielder interesting Newcastle?

The France international played very well in his debut season in England with Birmingham City following his £3M move from Juventus last summer.

With Birmingham now being relegated, they know they will need to offload some of their players in the summer.

A number of clubs have already been linked with the 27-year-old, but the news is that Kevin Keegan, now he knows Birmingham will definitely be relegated, will beat the competition to the midfielder.

Newcastle are said to be willing to bid £5M for Olivier, and that would be difficult for the midlands club to turn down. In fact an offer may already have been lodged by the Tyneside club.

Olivier Kapo, full name Narcisse-Olivier Kapo-Obou was born in September 1980 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

He is a French international, Ivorian-born football player who has previously played at Auxerre and Juventus (then off to Monaco and Levanate on loan) and signed for Birmingham City last summer.

He appeared for Birmingham 26 times last season and scored 5 goals.

Comments welcome.

  • 4 Bleek1988 // May 14, 2008 at 11:12

Wat do you guys think bout going for one of the chelsea mids- mikel, kalou, swp? No doubt chelski will be buyin top class mids in the summer which would mean alot less playin time for these lads.. And wat about pizzaro on the cheap as a target man for oba and mo?

Shabani Nonda is undergoing a medical at St James Park as we speak.

havent seen him much but what i have seen ive been fairly impressed, was it the goal against arsenal or? cant quite remember which big team it was but was a beauty!

  • 9 ronaldeano // May 14, 2008 at 11:23

not the quality we need to move forward. We are better than this man! there are better realistic targets we could be spending our money on. This is more drivel i recon, made up by the media cos birmingham are down

  • 10 HonoraryGeordie // May 14, 2008 at 11:23

Well I don’t know about the Birmingham manager, but Steve Bruce was in Jesmond on Monday night…anyone in Wigan’s team worth signing?

On topic - He would be a good addition, not the star man we’re craving, but would do a very good job

  • 11 ronaldeano // May 14, 2008 at 11:24

Sydneytoon@ its from the mail! complete LIES as always!

  • 12 Kash2 // May 14, 2008 at 11:25

I like this guy, and I also like McFadden too. Isn’t Muamba on loan from Arsenal?

I like the look of Zarate too. He’s a right footed Messi. A bit rough around the edges, but his potential is amazing!

  • 13 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 14, 2008 at 11:29

kash2- zarate is a rough diamond as they say, and no muamba is a permanent deal to brum

  • 14 Leo // May 14, 2008 at 11:30

    Narcisse-Olivier Kapo-Obou

wow thats going to make the club shop a fair bit when someone wants his name on their shirts

great looking player especially that when you look and find its his first season in the premiership, fast player and has an eye for a ball… get him and larrson and muvamba in

how do you spell mvamba im trying out different spellings to see which looks right

  • 15 James // May 14, 2008 at 11:34

A good team to start in August made of possible signings and some long shots

    ————————GIVEN———————–
    BEYE——–TAYLOR——DUNNE—–SHOREY
    ——-BENTLEY—-VELOSO—NZOGBIA
    ————————OWEN————————-
    ———–MARTINS——–HUNTELAAR——-

Subs : Harper, Faye, Enrique, Butt, Viduka, SWP

  • 16 Kash2 // May 14, 2008 at 11:34

I think there are some good players to be had from the relegated teams. Most of them have alot of ability and possibly a point to prove. KK would definitely get them to do a job for us!

  • 17 Hamas (51times) // May 14, 2008 at 11:36

On 11 May 2007, Muamba made his move to Birmingham City permanent,[7] signing a three-year contract for a fee reported by the club of £4 million.[8]

Wouldn’t mind Muamba at all. Kapo is a good player, not brilliant however and we could maybe get better. Zarate would be wonderful but the money his club in the Middle-East want for him is too much.

  • 18 HeronMag // May 14, 2008 at 11:36

We were tracking Zarate when he signed for Brum so I wouldn’t be surprised if we make another bid.

McFadden would be a great addition. For me he’s one of the most underrated strikers in the premiership. Like Robbie Keane he’s skilful and strong. He had a poor strike rate at Everton because he was played on the wing most of the time.

I’d be very interested to see how McFadden would do in an attack minded Keegan side!

  • 19 Matt Lacey // May 14, 2008 at 11:38

I think Muamba would be a better signing than Kapo. Perhaps Keegan might want to look at Antonio Valencia from Wigan as well…?

  • 20 Eric // May 14, 2008 at 11:38

Do not know much about him and opinion on this blog seems divided. I think he may be the level KK will go for. Is he an entertainer though? On the lighter side he has an unfortunate name. Wasn’t a kapo a concentration camp trusty? What side does he play? He might, being French, persuade Zog to stay.

  • 21 geordie nick // May 14, 2008 at 11:55

leo- its spelt muamba the birmingham player but there is a player for pompey called mvuemba maybe u gettin the spelling confused with that

  • 22 Angryman the Angry fan // May 14, 2008 at 12:19

F*** Off NZOG!! Ur a timewasting whingeing a*sed little Turd burglar!!
You have whinged for the last 2-3 years about being un happy….
were you unhappy when we plucked you from obscurity?? Paid you 1000 of pounds a week, put you in a luxury pad? Give you a massive pay rise to make you stay?

You deserve all you get and if it was up to me it would be training with the babies and made to rot in the reserves!

Angry over and OUT!!!!!!! PS! Rottweilers are all B*Stards

  • 23 CRAIGG // May 14, 2008 at 12:34

Ive seen Kapo a fair bit this Season and he has looked good especially aginst Chelsea on the opening day, I also remember seeing him for Auxerre in the champions league Vs Arsenal and he looked really talented against a quality team (Who were champions at the time)

Plus we need Left wingers with Zog leaving and Duff leaving his talent at Chelsea

And height is something else we lack he is a monster of a left winger 6″2 I believe.

  • 24 Hamas (51times) // May 14, 2008 at 12:37

Kapo isn’t a left winger is he? I’m pretty sure his position in central AM.

  • 25 CRAIGG // May 14, 2008 at 12:49

I dont know you may be right, Every time Ive seen him hes always on the left or up front.

  • 26 TER // May 14, 2008 at 12:54

I can’t believe we are getting excited over players from relegated teams. Although I would love to see Zarate in the black and white so I guess I am a hypocrite.

  • 27 CRAIGG // May 14, 2008 at 12:59

Just because the teams are relegated doesnt mean the players linked with us are bad.

If Valencia were relegated would we have turned our noses up at Joaquin, Albiol, Silva, Villa, Miguel etc.

  • 28 Tom_Toon // May 14, 2008 at 13:10

Kapo is a good player. Much better than Muamba who cant pass a ball.

  • 29 Julio Geordio // May 14, 2008 at 13:27

Kapo - A decent player in a poor team.

Had a decent start to the season but then faded quickly and by all accounts, was disappointing when push came to shove.

Zarate on the other hand, to some brum supporters that I know, is their player of the season and from what I’ve seen of him (not much admittedly) he looked a class above anyone else in Brum’s team.

But as said earlier, he is a rough diamond but with some group hugs from KK and Terry Mac I think the boy could be a star and I’d be more than happy to see him sign than I would Kapo.

  • 30 Tom_Toon // May 14, 2008 at 13:30

Al Sadd want 15-20 mil for Zarate. No way is he worth that.

  • 31 alex // May 14, 2008 at 13:52

would be a good signing. has pace and scores goals - plays in midfield or upfront. he’s also left footed which will add balance to the midfield. replacement for smith i hope.

  • 32 Bill F // May 14, 2008 at 14:13

On a slightly quirky note Ed, that (very fit) Lass at the top of the page must have a very clean glass by now. :)

  • 33 Rich // May 14, 2008 at 14:27

I know he wasn’t (quite) on a relegated team, but get Bullard in now! Very clever, committed player. And he can cross and take free kicks - both things we need.

  • 34 ScottyT // May 14, 2008 at 14:40

    not sure about kapo/larsson/muamba

zarate would be a decent signing. maybe we could try and get him on loan like birmingham did this season. still think bullard wouldnt be a bad signing even though they sadly didnt get relegated. shorey would be decent cover at lb i feel.

would still like to have a punt for SWP. doesnt seem to play much at chelski and hes still young and a very good player.

  • 35 Tom_Toon // May 14, 2008 at 14:42

Why would Bullard come when the whole reason he moved south was to be with his family.

  • 36 ScottyT // May 14, 2008 at 14:48

who knows why dont u go ask him urself..

also to be fair we are a much bigger club than wigan/fulham so may be hard to turn down.

  • 37 Mehzeb // May 14, 2008 at 14:52

BBC Sport is linking two Premiership clubs to be in talks with Zarate over a summer move.

    Any ideas who?

  • 38 OzZyMagpiE // May 14, 2008 at 15:43

i would love it if we sign zarate…. he has heaps of potential…

  • 39 OzZyMagpiE // May 14, 2008 at 15:51

    think about it this way….

    Given/Harper

    Enrique/Shorey Faye/Cambell? Taylor/Dunne? Beye/Geremi

    Emre/Zoggy Butt/? Barton/Milner

    Martins/Duff Owen/Viduka Zarate/?

Fill in the ? with realistic targets and we have got a squad with skill and charisma which Could compete for the 5-8 spot..

I like dat team.. zarate is class trust me on this!

  • 40 scott9 // May 14, 2008 at 16:43

i think kapo would be an orite signing hes a good player but iwud want someone a bit mote spectacular if possible mind

  • 41 Davy C // May 14, 2008 at 18:04

I think Kapo is a really good player and looked class playing in a very poor side. He would, in my opinion, be a good buy at this stage. I think he’d develop withing our team and Keegan could get a lot out of him. His attitude is spot on as well and he’s apparently very well liked down in Brum. He also shelled out £30,000 for a car as a present to say thank you to his boot boy at the club as well. How many would do something like that?

I have every confidence in Keegan building a squad to challenge the likes of Everton next season as he is to me the best since Cloughie to get the best out of players that other clubs may give up on. He is also brilliant at finding the best position for players and how to slot them into a formation. Just ask Steve Howey!

  • 42 Danny // May 14, 2008 at 18:48

Better attitude than N’Zogbia and better than Duff!

    Enough said! lol

  • 43 toonrmint // May 14, 2008 at 19:13

totally agree danny i mean kapo bought his boot cleaner a 30 thousand pound car as a thank you. get him in he is quality nd ill get up there nd get a job as his boot cleaner!! lol

  • 44 toonrmint // May 14, 2008 at 19:15

he will be cheap aswell so our so called ‘20million pound buget’ won’t be harmed.

  • 45 robertsa // May 14, 2008 at 19:17

got to agree with danny nd toonrmint kapo isnt fantastic but he is beeter than the sh1te we have at the moment.

  • 46 JJ // May 14, 2008 at 20:32

    Watching the Eufa Cup final:

Two players have stood out and no surprise they are:

Arshavin (creating all Zennits danger balls)

    and

Cuellar (clearing all Arshavins dangerous deliveries) ; )

If we could get these two then Cuellar would add quality to our defense and Arshavin would be the set piece specialist we are lacking.
He looks very much like a right footed Emre to me except he is better at set pieces, quicker and less injury prone.
Arshavin could play on the right of a 4-4-2 formation (he is on the left tonight) or in the AM position Owen is currently playing.

So my tranfer list would be

    DC: Cuellar
    DL: Shorey/ Bridge
    DM: Veloso
    AM: Arshvin
    ST: Gudjohnssen/ Ashton
McGeady for Zog if he goes.

These signing are possible and would make us a top quality side with depth.

  • 47 robertsa // May 14, 2008 at 20:44

my transfer list is a touch more down to earth

    cuellar
    riise
    kapo
    mcgeady
    arshavin

  • 48 JJ // May 14, 2008 at 20:49

    So robertsa.

You dont feel we need a striker to hold the ball up seen as though Viduka is out for 6 months.
AND you dont think we need a DM seen as though Butt is our only one since Parker left?
And you want two left wingers so that we can then have four at the club? with Zog and Duff?

  • 49 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 14, 2008 at 20:57

anyone see the goal mouth scrambe just then? should have been a pen handball, robertsa all your targets seem to amaise me as you go on bout signing players like ronaldinho, then now your saying players on a list who in my oppinion are a bag of tommy tank.

  • 50 scotty // May 14, 2008 at 22:02

Good player. Ne chance of buying shavin arse after that performance against rangers.

  • 51 Mag 4 Life // May 14, 2008 at 22:09

The player that we should be after is arshavin he just ripped rangers apart the second half of the eufa cup final :D

  • 52 richie // May 14, 2008 at 23:01

ashavin looked class, we should go get him..there could b competition for him tho??

  • 53 SCOTOON // May 15, 2008 at 16:52

Wudnt make a move despite his potential! Aim hire! Although Brum may offload Larsson and Mcfadden who we should aim for. for the last time ZARATE IS NOT BRUM’S TO SELL!!! anyway he is pricetagged at 17 mill wich is way to much for someone part of a relegated side though I agree that he is the new Messi! Lets get a target man for oba and MO but some1 more pacy than Dukes and with more skill too!

  • 54 Oga // May 18, 2008 at 17:21

Kapo would ultimately address a big problem in our midfield. The fact that none of our midfielders score.

Kapo has a brilliant shot and has proved he can use it to deadly affect in the Premier league. Would definetely be a worthwhile signing, but for a bit less than the said 5mil.
