Newcastle May Be Interested In Djibril Cisse

Thursday May 15th, 2008 by Ed Harrison· 64 Comments

Olympique Marseille striker Djibril Cisse wants to return to the English Premier League.

djibril-cisse.jpg

Djibril Cisse - when at Liverpool

And both Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle have been linked with the former Liverpool man, who is a bit of a speed merchant, and also has great acceleration.

Cisse played at Liverpool from 2004 until 2007, and he made 49 appearances for the Reds and scored 13 goals, during that time.

But he could never nail down a first team place, and was often used only as a substitute.

The Frenchman is also yet to be told whether his current club Marseilles see him as part of their plans for next season.

He moved permanently there only last summer after spending a year at the club on loan from Liverpool.

We never really rated him much when he was at Liverpool, but some of our readers have pointed out that he may do well on Tyneside.

He’s very fast and has always had a good record of scoring goals. And of course playing for Kevin Keegan, you’d have to think he would play well.

Here’s Cisse’s overall playing record. He’s still only 26 years old, and stands just under 6′0″ tall.

Years Club App Goals

1998–2004 Auxerre 128 70
2004–2007 Liverpool 49 13
2006–2007→ Marseille (loan) 21 8
2007– Marseille 34 14

1998-2002 France Under-21 19 6
2002- France 35 9

In 232 first class club games, Cisse has scored 105 goals, which is not a bad average at all. In 54 international appearances he has also scored 15 goals.

We have to say we’re still not too sure that Cisse would be a good acquisition for Newcastle, but let us know what your thoughts are regarding Djibril.

Comments very welcome.

had a funny feeling there would be an article about him put on tonight, he is awesome, hes my kind of player, all pace but has a brain on him and a good shot…

fantastic, glad i logged on now :-)

  • 2 alex // May 15, 2008 at 0:25

this story may not be true but it does look like keegan wants to add a pacey striker to the team. imagine oba, owen and another quick striker.

    mark who?

  • 3 nufcth.com // May 15, 2008 at 0:33

    Arshavin Arshavin Arshavin

    Arshavin Arshavin Arshavin

    Arshavin Arshavin Arshavin

    Arshavin Arshavin Arshavin

  • 4 Big Steve // May 15, 2008 at 0:34

would be welcome addition in my opinion, although i cant see king kev laying out the 4-3-3 next season.. more likely to be a 4-4-2.. this lad would provide healthy competition for captain fantastic and oba.. with young carroll breathing down thr necks also…

    Please also bring home arshavin!!!!!!!!

  • 5 leather // May 15, 2008 at 0:48

Still remember his gestures against us, he’s a proper knacker thought we’d seen the last of those. Squad player at best, waste of money and high wages at worst.

  • 6 Dirk // May 15, 2008 at 0:50

i never really rated him at liverpool, but saying that like all liverpool players (except anybody spanish, gerrard and carragher) benitez didnt give him a chance. hes got a gr8 record for goals and under the right manager he could shine. at marseille he proved he can score goals and yet they still dont use him enough they limit him to the bench, his auxerre record should have been enough to at least give him a chance at marseille and liverpool bu neither manager gave him that chance, i think cisse would be better off at bolton where hed b guaranteed first team football in order to shine again as i dont think he’d be playing too many with us, id rather see andy carrol get the games under his belt, blood him into the prem and alternate him wiv viduka. we need midfielders anyway, or a midfielder who can also play as striker if needed (cough*arshavin*cough)

  • 7 domtoon // May 15, 2008 at 1:05

we’re unlikely to get arshavin, mcgeady, or gomis this season. too many top clubs after them. we’ll go for em sure but they’ll turn into modrics. tempted by the possibility of european football, bigger paycheques and the bright fairylights of london.

cisse would on the otherhand be a viable alternative who doesn’t fall into the above category. yet is very pacey and could do well under kk who we all know likes to attack. i think cisse could fit in well with the new look toon.

didn’t know he gestured against us, tho!

  • 8 Kristófer // May 15, 2008 at 1:10

Hey did you see the Zenit - Rangers game Arshavin was unbeliveable, I really think this guy is good, he would be excellent for us. He loves to get on the ball and create, both the goals were made by him.

Would be great player for Newcastle

I don´t know about cisse though, maybe he is the kind of player who is good in the smaller leagues but can´t make the jump to the premier league. Maybe a little like Kezman at Chealsea, was great at PSV but sucked big time at chelsea.

But i still like Cisse a lot, great pace and can be brilliant at times….

  • 9 Tamas (15Himes) // May 15, 2008 at 1:11

Yup, in front of our fans in a Boxing Day game I think? Not sure, but still I was glad when he broke his leg (and the second time too) and I only wish it had ended his career.

  • 10 adaaaam // May 15, 2008 at 1:12

if ever there was an example of a player with no imagination on and off the ball…

  • 11 Nicke Alvaro // May 15, 2008 at 1:12

Hes just a tattooed Diouf in my eyes. Not to mention his obscene hair styles argh.

On a side note I think we should do anything to obtain Arshavin, he showed tonight just what he can do and at the same time highlighting what Newcastle need. Im sure if we acted we would have as much chance as anyone in getting him.

  • 12 Hamas (51times) // May 15, 2008 at 1:12

Also all of his stupid haircuts annoy me.

  • 13 MathewS.africa1988 // May 15, 2008 at 1:14

We seem to be linked with alot of players from the french league or spl.. Either the tabloids are talkin there usual rubbish or wise etc haven been lookin to far or hard for players to bring in, makes me really wonder why we are payin wise a stupid amount of money wen MA wants to reduce the wage bill, especially as the scouting team hasnt done much yet except loose out on modric

  • 14 domtoon // May 15, 2008 at 1:18

It’s early days MathewS.africa1988. Give em a bit more time..

  • 15 MagpieBlueBird // May 15, 2008 at 1:24

His goal record speaks for itself really. But he is a cocky little shit. And reckon he would be the kind of player to disrupt the player. Hope keegan is watching Cardiff’s youngsters in the final. Ramsey ledley and parry for the toon when there all about twenty five they will be world class for the toon and shit load of welsh international caps under their belts.

  • 16 MathewS.africa1988 // May 15, 2008 at 1:25

Domtoon-thats true, fully agree with you mate.. I just hope that behind the scenes they have been hustlin and bustlin to get our targets and that we will have the opportunity to get in quickly before the ‘bigger’ clubs come sniffing around

  • 17 emantoon // May 15, 2008 at 2:14

cisse better than the diane guy (psg)

i think we should break d bank for gomis..
we really need a big, holding striker..not much of speedy one. but gomis got all.

if not..get zigic of valencia or koller. anyone dat is big..

  • 18 JJ // May 15, 2008 at 2:15

He’s more crocked than Saha; Newcastle don’t need any more injury-prone players.

  • 19 RyanTeh // May 15, 2008 at 2:18

Cisse is shite, you guys ever watch him play in EPL last time when he’s in Liverpool? Not a nature goalscorer but indeed he’s fast. I prefer someone else to cover the post.

  • 20 yo // May 15, 2008 at 2:39

domtoon- That’s rubbish. Any money two of those three will be here next season

  • 21 vincent // May 15, 2008 at 2:57

cisse has a very bad shooting accuracy imo, that would be the last thing i want to on earth if cisse comes, alongside with swp.

swp is no difference with pennant, brainless crossing and narrow eye-sight.. would rather giv the chance to milner instead

should go for bently.. but ya i know.. no chance for us getting him

  • 22 seetow // May 15, 2008 at 3:05

emantoon - i really rate zigic and i really hope we can get him now since valencia are in a financial crisis! he’s big, he scores goals and he’s stronger than crouch, so he most definitely can win more headers than even crouch!

but koller on the other hand is in his mid thirties already and i don’t think we should go for somebody who is even older than viduka >

  • 23 bessi // May 15, 2008 at 3:05

plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz
don’t Cisse do you remember tha game against Liverpool what he did us and not for this i also have watched the french league this season and Cisse don’t fulfill our ambitions for next season

i think Ashton, Arshavin, Shorey, Lennon (SWP) will be a great to play for us

  • 24 Toon Down Under // May 15, 2008 at 3:09

Cisse, no thanks, he is injury prone, has lost a yard of pace after breaking his leg in half twice, & would command high wages. A player I would like to see at NUFC Bakary Kone , like a Bellamy without the court cases!

  • 25 Andy McNab // May 15, 2008 at 3:27

NO NO NO!!! This must be some rubbish rumor!!!
I`d rather see that moneygrabbin` slut Luque back on Tyneside before cisse steps out on St.James` in black and white!!

  • 26 Toon_Ksk // May 15, 2008 at 6:10

Linked with another player with a history of broken leg. I feel that it is kinda risky, especially when he has broken it TWICE.

  • 27 KKN39 // May 15, 2008 at 7:00

second on Zigic - reportedly he rejected loan move to portsmouth in jan so chance is that valencia is open to a loan bid if we pay them like 1m for a year long “trial” … at least much less risky than buying inflated/unproven Gomis, hugely injury-prone Cisse or another Big-4 reject Crouch, let alone the ageing Koller who’s slower than Geremi …

  • 28 KKN39 // May 15, 2008 at 7:09

if Mort could offer 16m for Modric why not 10 or 12m for Arshavin? more versatile and experienced, way better scoring record, small but strong, great skill / leadership / spirit on the pitch. yes he’s older but on the other hand we can convince him by offering 1st team football - at 27 he just can’t afford a couple seasons on the bench or loan to other crap clubs. he may join us if we remind him of his compatriot Smertin in the “big club” Chelski.

  • 29 Taiwantoon // May 15, 2008 at 7:44

Remember very little about him from his last time around. But I can tell he is terrible in headers from his hair style.

  • 30 TomPoon // May 15, 2008 at 7:52

Arshavin had an excellent second half for Zenit last night.

It would make loosing out on Modric worthwhile if we could sign him.

He really put himself in the shop window and I would not be surprised if someone like Arsenal went in for him.

  • 31 ELFER // May 15, 2008 at 7:55

He’s ok, but then DIANE would also be OK…I say let’s risk something and get GOMIS!!

  • 32 Hammy // May 15, 2008 at 8:16

Cisse is at best average, people seem to forget he’s broken his leg twice, could quite easily be another Smith.

    Sorry Leo, No thanks.

  • 33 Ausgeordie // May 15, 2008 at 8:17

Arshavin pass in the uefa final to set up the goal was exquisite and what we have been lacking. GET HIM NOW

  • 34 iain // May 15, 2008 at 8:17

imo having seen the effect 1 real quality player can have on a team like zenit i hope we justr go for 5 real quality players and keegan is allowed to spend.

gomis/arshavin/veloso/sakho/cuellar can you imagine the effect those players would have on our team ???

i was getting sick of all the talk surrounding nufc but like i said having seen arshavin play like that has made me dream again about what could happen if ashley would open his cheque book a little or put the club in a little debt at the expense of signing some real quality.

  • 35 ToonIndonesia // May 15, 2008 at 8:23

    why not Leroy Lita?
    he’s speedy, pacey and scores…

  • 36 Macas // May 15, 2008 at 8:25

    Cisse is a headless chicken

  • 37 ToonKing // May 15, 2008 at 8:31

    Cisse is crap.

  • 38 GM // May 15, 2008 at 8:35

Only one player for me…Arshavin he was fantastic against rangers, (albeit they are just a pub team who came with no intention of attacking to win the game) His passing, movement and vision were pure class, If I was CM, KK DW i’d be on the phone right now imagin him feeding oba and MO

  • 39 Stami // May 15, 2008 at 8:56

id rather take Diane or Gomis over Cisse!

  • 40 Nick Dryden // May 15, 2008 at 8:58

I thought the point of Wise etc was to nail down potential signings asap. Arshevin was someone who should have been wrapped up 18 months ago before his value trebled!! He’s been putting in performances like last night for ages now.

The defining moment of Allardyce’s failure was when given the chance to sign Elano or Smith for the same money, we all know what happened.

Smith’s agent says he doesn’t want to leave. No s..t, no one else would be stupid enough to pay £62k a week for a non scorer.

  • 41 Nick Dryden // May 15, 2008 at 9:01

    Iain, Have to agree.
gomis/arshavin/veloso/sakho/cuellar would be phenomenal. maybe add in Pandev?

  • 42 Rich // May 15, 2008 at 9:19

Anyone watch the uefa final last night?? ARSHAVIN is class totat quality, exactly what we need, i like Cisse as well

  • 43 figsdad // May 15, 2008 at 9:31

cuellar was no better than we got here allready..

    he was poor last night…

  • 44 John // May 15, 2008 at 9:44

looks like arshavin is leaving..but who too?

    http://www.tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=92919

  • 45 Micky Toon // May 15, 2008 at 9:51

I’d rather keep Alan Smith than sign Cisse. I think that says it all.

  • 46 geordie nick // May 15, 2008 at 9:55

were already in talks with psg about diane so we obviously arent goin for ciisse

  • 47 Davies // May 15, 2008 at 9:58

No to Cisse. It’s bad enough to have one player with N’Zogbia’s attitude, but to have a second one that isn’t as good would do enormous damage to the “team spirit”. Don’t bother with Cisse and flog Zog.

Buy in Arshavin and Zigic. These players would be huge compensation for losing out on Modric.

Of course, if we do show an interest, Ramos will probably step in. It appears that Spurs’ new scouting policy is to wait until we show an interest in a player and then hijack the deal.

  • 48 Jamie // May 15, 2008 at 9:59

13 goals in 49 games int eh premiership no way

  • 49 Ian // May 15, 2008 at 10:04

What the stats dont tell you is that he had two broken legs over that period of time from really agressive tackles when he was running at full pace, that is why his goals stats dont look as good as they should be, he was out twice for long periods of time.

However they werent hamstring or other repetitive problems they were other people breaking his legs and he has recovered fully.

Since 2002 he has averaged 11 goals per season, he is lightening quick and if he scores this many off and on the bench how many could he score if he was first choice???

That is the player I want to see, he has a weird personality, his facial expressions and taunts to the opposition’s fans etc arent great, but he has the skill and goalscoring ability in my opinion to put virtually all of the current premiership strikers in the shade, his goals are fantastic, this is the type of player we need, he has baggage in the way personality but not as bad as Bellamy so we can get him, otherwise Chelsea and co would have him, but he has all of the skill and isnt injury prone like Owen or Viduka and he is as fast if not faster than Martins.

66 goals since 2002 and he isnt first choice striker!!!!! Some in International games.

This is the player we want, he has won silver most of his career and forward of the year.

Otherwise watch Bolton snap up the next Anelka.

  • 50 geordie nick // May 15, 2008 at 10:37

he was crap at liverpool so no, dont want a player who breaks his leg evry yr or so either

  • 51 Singa_Toon // May 15, 2008 at 11:07

    Wished three years back:

    Harper

    Baye Faye Taylor Enrique

    Solano Jenas Dyer Robert

    Owen Shearer

    #####

  • 52 Bill F // May 15, 2008 at 12:25

Cisse is a top class goal scorer who has had a lot of bad luck with injuries. Doesn’t mean he is going to get more. Broken bones are less of a problem than torn ligaments, which can mean reccuring problems. He has scored a lot of vital goals for Marseille in recent weeks and I would be surprised If they are willing to sell him.
I think he would do a good job for us.

  • 53 autibo // May 15, 2008 at 12:26

this business about diane all seems to have come from him stating he’d love to play for the toon!! shameful way of putting himself in the shop window…

apparently the psg player we’re after is 18-year-old defender sakho. any news on this one?? saw him once and he looks every bit as good and promising as micah richards

p.s. please kev, go for arshavin!!!

  • 54 Geordie Gerrard7 // May 15, 2008 at 12:44

arshavin, veloso, dunne, shorey, gomis, thats the players id like king kev, go get them, and big dennis have a look at sakho, lulinha and a few other youngsters.

  • 55 Ian // May 15, 2008 at 13:19

    Look at these:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DItKXDh12NM

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6f2SZ1J_6-E

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/191821/djibril_cisse/

He is older now, his agressive personality gets him in to trouble, but he is definately the type of player to work well under Keegan.

French first division top scorer 2002 and 2004.

He is the man for us, would love to see him here.

  • 56 Ian // May 15, 2008 at 14:49

Agree Bill F, that is the problem with this player, he scores at vital times especially in high pressure situations, they were going to sell him at Christmas but he wouldnt leave mid season, now they maybe darent sell him.

Having two different legs broken by other players tackles isnt the same as being injury prone!!

This is a World class player, his wacky personality and being on the bench so much hides just how good this player is, let us get a player cheap for once instead of waiting until they are top price.

  • 57 robertsa // May 15, 2008 at 15:49

i worry he could be a replacement for micheal owen. id be gutted if owen left but i do want cisse.

  • 58 ScottyT // May 15, 2008 at 15:55

no thx defo not. arshavin is the player we need. cuts open defences with passes brilliant player.

  • 59 Ian // May 15, 2008 at 16:06

Arshavin 19 goals since 2002 and a main player.

Djibril Cisse 66 goals since 2002 and plays many of those off the bench.

    no choice

  • 60 Thomas // May 15, 2008 at 16:15

is it wise to sign a prem flop???

  • 61 Ian // May 15, 2008 at 17:29

Thomas he wasnt a flop, he scored a lot of goals, but wasnt first choice striker then he broke his leg, before he played again they peddled him, but he is as fast as ever.
His personality is different that is what has kept him away from the very best clubs except Liverpool not his playing, we need a top class striker and as Keegan said we may have to look at players with baggage, he only has baggage in his personality not his goalscoring ability.
He is perfect for us, however he has been on form this season and they may change their mind about selling him.

  • 62 Jamie G // May 15, 2008 at 17:48

The team next seasons will hopefully be….

    Given
    Beye Taylor Cuellar Riise
    butt

    Milner Mcgeady
    Arshavin
    Martins Owen

  • 63 Dom4Toon // May 15, 2008 at 18:00

how much would he cost? and we should break the bank for arshavin, probably up to 15mil i’d say. better than modric imo

  • 64 Ian // May 15, 2008 at 18:07

Dom4toon, Cisse is supposed to be £5.5-6m which I cannot believe they will sell him for, he has to be £8m, how many players who have that goalscoring average are under £8m???

That is the figure that keeps getting mention, Sven was supposed to be signing him this Summer.
