There is some additional news today on the proposed transfer of Arda Turan to Newcastle.

Arda Turan - Newcastle still interested
We reported last week that Newcastle had already bid about £16M for the Turkish 21 year-old, and that they were wisely trying to get the deal completed before the European 2008 tournament starts.
And, not surprisingly, Galatasaray would prefer a deal after the tournament, when the boy’s value could be much higher.
The Turkish international has already played 66 times for Galatasaray and 16 times for Turkey, and the club would be reluctant to move one of their prized assets on so early in his career.
A club source revealed to The News Of The World today:
“The club want to at least wait until Euro 2008 is over.”“The offer will be considered and they will sell.”
“ They have to be seen to try to keep their best players or the club’s fans will go crazy.”
Newcastle are reported set beat Middlesbrough to the signing of the Turkish winger.
Coupled with this, it is being reported the transfer will mean the end of Damien Duff’s career at Newcastle, but we don’t believe one word of that.
Gone are the days when you sign one player in a certain position, and another player in that same position has to leave.
It’s all about building a strong squad of players, and Kevin has already said he wants to keep everybody he has right now. The truth is we still have a very small squad and we’ve already lost Ramage, Carr, Troisi and Diatta, with Ameobi also odds on to leave.
It would be stupid of us to let Damien go at this point, in our view.
Turan’s agent Ahmet Bulut confirmed there is a club interested in securing the transfer of Turan, and we‘re sure that club is Newcastle United.
Bulut said:
“One club is talking to Galatasaray and asking them to name their price.”
“If Galatasaray’s request is met, the transfer can happen.”
But this is also very similar to the situation with Luka Modric, when Tottenham came in at the last moment to sign him.
Unfortunately, we think there’s a chance his agent, and Galatasaray are hoping a bigger club will come in for the player – so let’s no get our hopes too high right now.
Newcastle should get in quickly and make the deal, or get out.
But they shouldn’t let things drag on for a few days, which only lets other clubs come in and make their own deal.
Speed is of the essence here.
But Turan would certainly be a great signing for us.
Comments welcome.

Ed, could you do an article of just votes, on what positions people want filled up and on the same page have a list of players in each position that we have been linked with. Would be interestng to get a overall perspective of everyones transfer opinions

yes if we get this guy it will start the big names coming in. he is a top quality player in Turkey and has what it takes to make it in England. Hope we get this guy
5 alex // May 18, 2008 at 13:24
i would like this fella but if his club are reluctant to let him go until after the euros its gonna be difficult to land him.
6 Andy1 // May 18, 2008 at 13:26
If we want to sign top players like this we need to act fast, and in this case before the Euro’s where his value could go up dramatically. However, I think this is probably just an attempt by the club or his agent to look for a move. We always get caught up in this sort of thing, with players the scouts haven’t even had a look at.
Having said this, I hope we are interested in this sort of player. We missed out on Modric but it shows ambition to be looking at the best young talent in Europe. I don’t really know what type of players we are looking for because there has been, as always, so much ridiculous speculation. From Thierry Henry to Anthony Gardner it’s hard to know what is realistic for us right now.

i thought it was $16m(dollars) in a previous report but today they are saying
£11m is what they want for him

8 Andy1 // May 18, 2008 at 13:27
It’s 16mil in euros I think, that’s about 11mil - the figure quoted in the stories I have read today.
9 spen27 // May 18, 2008 at 13:28
how close is close? i cant wait! its all about decent wingers i so miss laurent robert i dnt care he never tracked backed we finished 4th 3rd and 5th with him in the sqaud and he bagged some screamers and sh*t loads of assists milner and zog are good but we all no not good enough.turan can play on both wings happy days! duff will be missed but he’s allways injured and he’l never produce his best again a shame i no but true. snap up turan fast mort
10 Leo Smith // May 18, 2008 at 13:29
$16m not £16m, so it’s about £8m. Sounds good to me if he’s as good as everyone’s making out.
11 Marat18 // May 18, 2008 at 13:29
hope this is true.
if this kid turns us down and chooses, say, spuds - then we will be a complete laughing stock.
next our transfer should be done whatever the price. the more we fail, the more difficult it will be to attract better players.
12 Nick Dryden // May 18, 2008 at 13:30
fantastic if it meant the end of Duff but for 11 million, couldn’t we just keep N’zogbia instead?
Our 4-3-3 worked so well and was unbeaten until the useless Smith came in for Viduka.
All we would need to do is put Milner in for geremi on the right , and move Zogbia to the left and push Barton in the middle of them as Butt isn’t getting any younger.
13 Toon1978 // May 18, 2008 at 13:30
Andy1 that is why we need to sort this signing out sooner rather then later, im sure SPURS will be watching closely. If they come in for him then it will be pure spite.

21 Jeff D // May 18, 2008 at 13:46
I’m more excited at the prospect of signing Turan than i ever was about mordric. This lad is absoloute class!!! He won Galatasaray the turkish title in much the same way as Ronaldo did for Man U. I may get slated for this, but. i think he will prove to be better than Ronaldo. I just hope Newcastle pull out all the stops to get him.

but he ran circle around liverpool 1 of the best teams in our league. not many players perform like that against our big 4

Again i said he will prove to be better than Ronaldo. I accept he hasnt done it in a big league, i also accept that hes not there yet.
What he has achieved at 21 for galatasaray, and the impact he has had at international level is very impressive.

this team looks good, also don’t forget Edgar.
But we have to move quickly. All players you mentioned are available and want to move (except Veloso).
But I’m afraid we are not after Arshavin, otherwise I don’t understand what are we waiting for.
But hope there is a lot of work is done behind the scene.
37 Jeff D // May 18, 2008 at 14:17
Spen i was talking to a scouse mate who was at that Champions league match. ( is that a big league Hamas?) He said that Turan Frightened the living shit out of them when he came on and nearly nicked it for them. He was only 19 then.
38 Tom // May 18, 2008 at 14:22
who cares if duff goes??? hes paid far more than the likes of nzogbia and milner, does far less on the pitch, and could be replaced in the squad by lua lua
39 KKK // May 18, 2008 at 14:26
Marat18 - i don’t think we are waiting around at all. The club have been very quiet over the past week or so. They will be working flat out to get these transfers through. Especially with Turan and Veloso going to EuroO8 their values will probably double.
As for Arshavin, you never know, all this speculation about Turan has only just came out so who really knows who else we are after other than Keegan and co.
40 KKK // May 18, 2008 at 14:30

43 Toon1978 // May 18, 2008 at 14:35
Spen27 aint heard much about Veloso only that CHELSEA were weighing up a bid for him but thet are weighing bids up for every player that plays internationally lol but i dont think we have a chance with VELOSO tbh so i will ignore that one for now unless i see him at SJP for talks who knows hope we get this ARDA and GOMIS,ZARATE.
44 alex // May 18, 2008 at 14:44
he’s the sort of player that will get kicked a lot unfortunately. i’m sure he wins a lot of freekicks though - its a shame we have no one in our side who can take a decent set piece.
i think he would be a good signing but our priorities must lie with getting a central midfield who can ‘run’ a game.
turan, gomis, veloso - i’d be more than happy if we signed any one of these!

I’m beginning to think the M.Ashley is only prepared to spend big on young players and not prepared to spend on already proven players that cost alot of money. If ARDA, ZARATE and GOMIS arrive at NUFC then i think that will almost tell us what Ashleys plans are. I only hope he doesnt have FEEDER club in his mind.

No deals will happen get used to it..dennis wise couldn’t recruit jimmy krankie never mind Turan..players we will sign are players that want to use us a s a prem window then move to a more ambitious club..the rest will end up at clubs with ambition…I bet sunderland spend more that us.
Any players of any significance will end up at villa, portsmouth, spurs, city, west ham.,everton etc.

99 Jamie G // May 18, 2008 at 19:27
tdt, i appreciated your involvement in the debate which is obv a sensitive issue.
you may be proud of this link u just posted, but to be fair, we all know all of this and it just shows the military power which israel is forced to make in defence against people who don’t just want to see jewish people have no homeland, but don’t want to see jews at all. Now i am catholic and have no affiliation with jews apart from the fact my cousin lives in israel as part of business…but why are people like yourself taken in by the palestinian’s underdog status.
the main reason why so many palestinians are killed is because israel try to take out leaders of groups like hamas, terrorists who want all jews and christians to either die or become muslim. now in doing this people are unfortunately killed because they cowardly base themselves besides schools and civil areas.
palestinians on the other hand send kids in to blow up israelis in a restraunt or at a bus stop because they simply just want to destroy the nation and the religion.
i hope u understand what im saying, and dont just get taken in by what u hear on bbc news.

I am neither muslim or jewish, nor palestinian or isreali, or american, so I have no bias in that sense. your warped views on the situation should realy not be allowed to infect the rest of the bloggers here who dont know of the situtaion. if you were being invaded every day, would you stand around a watch? y are there refugee camps overflowing with displaced palistinians in the neibouring countries to palistine? you know what the western media want you to know. isreal has nuclear missiles given to them by america, palistine has nothing near that to defend itself from isreal invading it. disregarding the facts is an obvious sign that you dont have a clue

Jamie G i think your point is taken seriously mate i and i can see your point but really lets not talk about this on this site. ARDA is the talk of the day and i wait in anticipation of hearing fresh news on this story so when i see a fresh message on the ARDA story i click on it straight away hoping that a link has been put up to say the deal is done but only to find political opinions which is dissapointing. I can see your point Jamie and the point of tdt after all there are no good guys or bad guys in reality this is the world we live in and Football is a change from hearing horrible things that happen every day. Lets stick to footy and hope we can get ARDA, ZARATE and that lanky striker cant remember his name it think its Baftimbi Gomez.

and can i just say guys….sincere apologies for taking the chat off-topic, its just i feel strongly about it, just like i feel strongly about the toon.
this turan guy seems like a gamble. i feel aiden mcgeady is much better and would be better in the prem because of his experience against top class opposition in the CL e.g nesta, puyol etc.

Well if 14M is the fee get him snapped right up! If we do get him his value will only grow with being such a young talent.
Man U bought Ronaldo for a similar amount and now he’s worth 100M. I’m not saying Turan will be worth that or is even on the same level as Ronaldo but i’m sure u get my point.

http://www.nufc.com/
We understand that United were represented in the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium on Saturday, as Stuttgart ended their season with 2-2 draw at home to Bielefeld.
The object of our interest is claimed to be the home side’s 22 year-old forward Mario Gomez (pictured).
And Gomez was on target from the penaty spot as Stuttgart drew 2-2 and claimed an Intertoto spot.
Gomez signed a new five year deal at Stuttgart last summer in the wake of their league title success and has scored 28 goals in 32 club appearances this season.
He’s also expected to be an automatic starter for the German national side in Euro 2008 after having won nine senior caps to date and scored six times.
Inevitably Gomez has attracted the attention of a host of top sides across England and Europe, all of whom could offer the lure of Champions League football next season.

im confident we could snatch mcgeady away from celtic for around 10 million, who is a great, skillful winger who can cross, score goals and make things happen, something which we currently lack.
if we cant get deco which will probably be the case…..what about andres d-allesandro, basically he kept pompey up a few seasons ago b4 moving back to spain. looks in a similar mould to deco

We could be in for McGeady as well or if the Turan signing doesn’t go through he could be the next one on Kev’s list. Also remember Kev sayin how he would like to bring some SPL players to tyneside. What do u guys think of Steve Davis? had a crakin time up at Gers, reminds me of Scotty Parker.
136 Jamie G // May 18, 2008 at 21:10
well i don’t mean to join the club but im scottish too lol i wonder if any geordies actually get on this sight.
steve davis, in my opinion, is quite a bland player. a bit like a darren fletcher or a nicky butt or a joey barton…does a job fairly well but nothing to rave about. i dont think david would improve the squad.
mcgeady is actually a member of my golf club and i swear to god i spoke to him last week but he didn’t really have much to say about it, just that no offers had come in yet and that he was happy at celtic ‘but u never know..’
nacho novo is ok but again…do we really need him?
as for other spl guys….cuellar is great, as is stephen mcmanus, noth centre backs.
the celtic playmaker nakamura is excellent.

Hey mates, I’m a Galatasaray fan and just want to note that this lad is our star player. He led us to the championship title this year above the likes of Fenerbahce (who have proven their worth more than enough this year in the CL).
Every fan knows this kid’s way too good for the team but we really need him as well. Our biggest fear was that he might have gotten spoiled after becoming the star player of a top flight club in the Turkish league but it seems his performance hasn’t dropped one bit throughout the season.
Ye he’s a winger alright and will pounce on any opportunities you give him (be it creating goals all by himself or scoring it himself) provided that the other team isn’t aware of his capabilities (i.e: The game against Liverpool in the match where they got wasted 3-1 or something). Most teams just stick about 2 players on him to mess him up since his physical appearance is rather weak. Oh and I doubt he would really demand 50k a week according to some sources as he’s been payed peanuts currently compared to that sort of cash.
In summary, I’d say this lad’s the best young talent Turkish football has ever seen since Nihat Kahveci. He’s a young talent so it’s all up to the coach to bring out the potential in him! Take good care of him if you do get him and just keep in mind this guy’s performances fluctuate depending on the atmosphere the fans can create for him.
Feel free to ask any questions if you wish btw.

( even to showcase his talent to big clubs in a differnt league, boost his profile)
162 craig chisholm // May 19, 2008 at 9:58
lads, i would say our chances of getting this player are slim at best. he is shit hot and as of now - if they didnt already know it - the whole world will know. it does not help that fergie has said he is looking for a left winger too aswell as a striker. our only chance of getting this bloke is to offer big money right bloody now so that galatasary accept. the longer it goes on, the smaller our chances and given the fact that our baord are on their new sensible route, there is no chance of going over the top on an offer or salary. if fat fred was here he would have signed already, which way was right though. at least we are stable now eh. we also need keegan and probably owen over there along with emre sweet talking the lad cos lets be honest denis and mortisha do not do alot for our club in terms of convincing people to play for us!!
i give us a two out of ten chance on this one. lets concentrate on getting crouch in and maybe SWP, they are more realistic. sorry but thats the way i see it.

if anyone wants to talk with me they can add this : my_new_smsn_@hotmail.com
166 GSfan // May 19, 2008 at 11:25
First off, yeah he has 7 goals and 9 assists in his record for the season so far (with 3 of those goals being in the championship decider match against Sivasspor). But this lad’s main contribution can’t really be seen from statistics as he focuses on keeping defenders busy and taking them out instead to create opportunities for his teammates. He might not even get a lot of direct assists because he tends to be the one that builds up a play rather than just doing the finishing touches.
GeordieGerrard7, I’d say there is an “Arda hype” at the moment because he led us to the title above the likes of the favorites Fenerbahce. And good for him because he well deserves such praise like that. Thing is though there is that issue of uncertainty whether he might be able to perform on the same level in the premiership due to various reasons (e.g: adaptation, etc.). I’ll be honest, it’s not really like going out there and picking up someone who you know for sure will be a star player like Christiano Ronaldo. So there is that uncertainty and risk factor when buying Arda and 11m pounds (as the papers project) sounds a bit too steep for him as it is now. However, if he does perform in Euro 2008 then he would be justifying this 11m “bid premium”. The only reason for his value to be at 11m as I see it is because he’s on the spotlight now where clubs ‘may’ become interested in him which undoubtedly has an effect on his value. But I’d say Newcastle definitely has a chance to get him, it is the Premiership after all and everyone knows almost every team is of quality there in terms of European standards.
But that’s where the risk factor comes in, if you buy him before the others do with a massive bid of 11m right now he could either perform really well and become double or even triple the value when he plays for you guys, or he could turn out to be a major flop and that would be 11m gone down the drain. So the decision is more like should you take the risk or not. He seemed pretty consistent in the Turkish league like I mentioned before but there is that uncertainty if he can do the same there.
Oh and as a final note, I’d say it’s way too early to compare Arda to the likes of Hagi. Hagi really was a true legend. Nihat is also a player who has proven his worth in La Liga for the past 4-5 years or so and helped Villareal become the runner-up in the Spanish League above the likes of Barcelona while also having done such an achievement before when he was in Real Sociedad. Arda’s only record so far is leading Galatasaray to the title and I’m sure he hopes to add to that record in Euro 2008. I’ll be perfectly honest saying this though, due to the Arda hype that’s going on, don’t be surprised if some things about him are exagerrated at times. But one thing’s for sure, this kid definitely has the potential to perform, it’s just down to whether or not you can squeeze the potential out of him under those circumstances.

170 gas fan down under // May 19, 2008 at 16:22
In response to gsfan. Having followed the development of arda for a few years now I am convinced that arda has what it takes to be as good as C Ranaldo. Gsfan is right everytime arda goes near the ball in Turkey he is surrounded by at least three opposition players yet he still managers to dribble his way out of trouble. His short powerfull legs ensures that he manages to stay on his feet all the time and he is difficult to dislodge from the ball - this will be an asset in the pysically demanding epl. He is also much quicker that what people give him credit for. He is a good shot on goal although at gala he seems to be more interested in setting up the king of Turkish soccer hakan sukur rather than shooting himself. He can get around players with less effort than C.Ronaldo whereas C Ronaldo seems to have to jump through hoops to pass an opponent arda seems to just glide past opponents. The only thing seperating C Ronaldo and arda at the moment is C Ronaldo’s goal scoring. I have no doubt that should arda be given a licence to go for goal as Ronaldo has been given - then the next big thing in world soccer will be arda turan.

173 Sirevren // May 20, 2008 at 11:22
Turkish papers confirming 11m pounds bid for Arda. Galatasaray board is considering the offer however Galatasaray fans are totally against the sale, the price is not enough to convience the supporters. Arda still has a mission next year, and he will play in champions league - newcastle may not be a very tempting club. Emre will be a huge factor tho, if Keagen is willing to build the midfield with emre and arda, then it may convience arda. I will say, 50/50 for the transfer to go through until another club shows interest! If toons want him, they need to complete the deal b4 euro08.
