Euro 2008 star Andrei Arshavin of Russia, who looked great in his only game so far when Russia dismantled Sweden on Wednesday, has told his Zenit St. Petersburg club he wants a move.

Andrei Arshavin - wants to move from St. Petersburg
Andrei has been linked with a move to the Premier League recently, and has told his club, Zenit St Petersburg, UEFA Cup winners this year, that he wishes to leave.
It looks like Arsenal, and Everton have joined Newcastle in the chase for the Russian International, who at 27, is Russia’s principal play-maker, which we all witnessed against Sweden, when Russia looked great.
Arshavin been at St. Petersburg since 2000, and played 249 times for his only club, and scored an impressive 47 goals.
Zenit manager Dick Advocaat said yesterday:
“Andrei has told us that he wishes to change clubs,â€
“At present in the way of offers it is quiet.”
“The situation may well change after tomorrow’s game against Holland for the national sideâ€.
Andrei will be on display again tonight, when Russia take on the Netherlands in a quarter final tie of Euro2008. That should be some game.
But it will have to be something special to beat the incredible excitement of the Turkey Croatia game last night, when the only 2 goals were scored in the final 3 minutes of extra time, and Turkey went on to win on penalties 3-1.
When Croatia finally scored with just a minute remaining of extra time, it looked all over.
Turkey lost 3 players from that game with a second yellow card in the tournament, and one or two seemed to also pick up injuries.
Since Turkey reportedly started the game with only 15 fit players, it will be hard for them to even field a team in the semi-finals.
But it seems that miracles are still possible, as Turkey scored their equalizer 2 minutes into injury time in the second period of extra time, which was just 15 minutes long, after no time was added in the first extra time period.
So Croatia were not too happy at that.
Turkey have now come from behind to win their last 3 games - unbelievable.
What a great game this football is.
Comments welcome.

Im afraid we have missed out on any chance we had in signing this terrific player. Our summer would have been so different if we got Modric as more top players would have fancied it. Now we are firmly behind the top 4, Spurs, Man City, Villa, Everton and probably Portsmouth.
I suggest we get some full time scouts out in Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe if we haven’t already and hope to pick these players up before they become well known.
I think we should go for SWP as he was quality under Keegan.
2 The Entertainers // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:38
Our only hope is if we move fast or it is possible Wise may already have some of the ground work done on him.
Spurs have shown if you strike fast in the transfer market you can pull of great signings

giv em wot they want and in return u will giv the fans wot we want MA
come on if we get arshavin i would be exxxxstatic

something special to beat the croatia/turkey game??????
were we watchin the same match??? its was boring as f*k, was only gd for the last 2 mins of extra time!!!
5 Jack Franklin // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:41
We needed to get him quicker, now Arsenal + others involved we have little chance. Same story with that Turkish winger Ardan, now he has played at Euro 08 more bigger clubs are after him, and we have no chance against teams like Arsenal.
6 Paul R // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:41
Bang Goes Our Chances of getting him then !! Why are we sitting back and waiting ?? If we have any chance of getting him we need to act before the others and close the bloody deal FFS !! We have so lacked somebody like him for ages someone who can unlock the door in tight games !! COME ON NEWCASTLE !!!!!!!!!!!
7 Geordie Nick // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:42
cant see us gettin arshavin now tho, wud luv him but we are FAR TOO SLOW in everything we do, everyone at the club better pull their fingers out sharpish, hopefully well see at least one new face this week with kk back at his desk monday
8 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:45
arsenal will not go after arshavin or arda, they are both too expensive
we too should stay away from the overpriced arda as he is worth around 10 million and definitely no more than 12 million
9 scottish mag // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:47
ac milan want arshavin now
10 Leo // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:51
well it would be fantastic if we sign him, but you have to think if we have been able to find this sort of player before he became the ‘big name’ then maybe we have found some others who are not yet that…?
11 natedawg // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:52
we dont even no if we are still after arsharvin anymore we were in january but that was a different manager and set up. he wont go to arsenal to old and exspensive , plus he isnt french lol
12 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:53
Agree Spyro,no more than 10 mill for him. They put such a price for him as if he was Pandev. No thanks.
13 DMag // Jun 21, 2008 at 10:55
Have faith!
There’s something cooking at SJP. Keegan’s upbeat,Owen and Taylor are all of a sudden in contract talks and both are saying very positive things about Newcastle.
I honestley think were going to pull off a couple surprises!
14 Bryan // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:01
What are Dennis Wise and his cronies doing? Can we hounestly say we are getting value for money from these people. When are we going to start to make any signings as apposed to talking about these signings. Very worrying. Wise is a joke in my eyes. If MA wants to trim the wage bill then I think there are a few non playing staff who can go quite easily starting with Dennis Wise.
15 Magpie6699 // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:01
No European football to offer = no chance to compete and no chance to make any high profile signings. All of these stories are just making me feel more like the kid with his face pressed against the sweetie shop window.
We must resign ourselves to that - and hope that KK can get the best out of what we’ve got (and we have a few stars) plus a few more decent signings plus maybe we can unearth a new Zog from our youngsters this season. If we could sneak up the table we might start to threaten for a European place - I think MA’s philosophy is more likely to be that - sound footing first, then steady progress. Boring but true.
16 Marat18 // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:04
scottish mag,
i will be very surprised if AC Milan do want Arshavin.
As far as I know Ancelloti is one of the UEFA specialist on deciding MOM award, so after Russia - Sweden game he said that he was impressed by Arshavin.
After that Russian tabloid published the story “Ancelotti: Arshavin is the star of this tournament” (after just one game, ffs). Few hours later they said “AC Milan wants Arshavin”.
That all are paper BS.
AA himself said that he is willing to play in Spain and England.
So, IF we are really interested, then the only competition we have so far is Arsenal (and they are in pole-position, tbh. IF the are also interested, of course).
IMHO
17 51times // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:04
Don’t think we’ll get him, but there’s no harm in trying.
18 Danny // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:07
I agree….People think that because we have not bought anybody already that we never will!
FFS people the transfer window isn’t even open yet and the majority of our real targets are playing or have been playing in Euro 08!
Keegan coincidently came back from holiday just as the group stage finished so now we can expect some activity…But to be honest if we are to make solid moves for Arda or Arshavin then it will be when Turkey and Russia are no longer involved!
Show a bit of faith lads…Just because Everton and Arsenal are mentioned that does not mean he is automatically gonna choose them..I think they will be reluctant to spend that sort of money on him and they still have to have a bid accepted like we do…Its never a given that he would automatically choose the better team!
19 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:10
pandev aint worth anywhere near 16million either, only way i can see arsenal going after arshavin is if they do indeed sell adebayor
20 Leo // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:16
anyone know who this milito is that tottenshite are being linked with, i know he is a big name but know nothing about him… how come every club in the prem are setting transfers up but newcastle… nothing, im excited
21 Danny // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:19
Arsenal don’t need Arshavin I think….They reckon Eduardo should be fit towards the start of the season and if Adebayor does leave then he will be replaced by somebody a bit younger and with someone who is more of an out and out striker which Arshavin is not!
Van Persie is now fit and Bendtner will play a more important role for them next year!
Its just because Arshavin is a good player that they have thrown their name into the ring…If Wenger wanted Arshavin the he would have bought him before the tournament started…Hes far too clever to be involved in a bidding ward with AC Milan Newcastle and Everton!
22 Geordie Nick // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:19
arshavin isnt a replacment for adebayor, more likely be a replacemtn for hleb wen he goes to barca
23 Marat18 // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:24
Geordie Nick,
but I suppose Nasri is the replacement for Hleb.
but then, they have to replace Flamini also.
I heard that they are interested in Ben Arfa (he is french, lol).
Or I have an idea! They get NZogbia for 10m, we get Arshavin for 12. fair deal for me.
24 WIGAZ // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:26
Taking a break from AA for a mo! has anybody else heard spurs in for Van Nistleroy! if he’s up for grabs we should get in for him! i know he’s getting on abit but he’s still world class! look at the job he’s been doin for Holland in Euros! imagine front 2 of Owen & Van Nis for toon! OMG thats got goals written all over it! if you add AA supplying! top 4 here we come! what you lads think of taking Van nis?
25 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:27
n’zogbia aint worth a penny of 6 million right now
26 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:27
tottenham hotspur already said they aint going for nistelrooy
27 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:30
Spyro….Maybe not 16 mill, but there’s no way you would get Pandev for less than 14 mill.
He’s proven world class player…unlike:Bent,Ryan Babel etc.
28 Spyro // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:35
would take babel over pandev anyday of the week
29 Marat18 // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:36
Hadji,
honestly I think Pandev’s worth 10-12 mill. He isn’t established world-class striker at the mo.
and I’d like to go for Mario Gomez for target man, he had a poor Euro, but now we have chances to get him.
30 Dave // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:41
Leo are you taking the piss?
Right, it’s clearly just rumours with Milito and Tottenham but somehow to you that means that they’re in negotiations and are “setting up a transfer”. F**
k me.
People complain endlessly on here whenever Ed puts up a story linking us with a player, saying “I’m sick of rumours” etc.
And as soon as a rival club get linked with someone, it automatically means that they’re going to sign them. Jesus Christ mate get a grip.
31 jacob // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:42
It hurts me to say it but since Ashley’s takeover, we’ve become the proverbial ‘tyre kickers’ of the transfer market. You know, those people who turn up to view a 30 grand mercedes, kick each tyre and say ” Not much call for these nowadays mate - I’ll give you five grand!”
We can’t compete with the big smoke clubs for location, and as a result we NEED to offer big money to get the best players - young or old. Youngsters are great - if they turn out to be diamonds - but how often does that happen? Don’t get me wrong - I know the days of trophy signings are long gone, and I agree in principle with the club’s aim of buying for the future - it makes perfect sense. But be warned, if Ashley doesn’t put his hand in his big pocket and produce some funds for the first team - as opposed to funding dozens of coaches, directors and strategic managers - then we’ll struggle stay in the premier league… never mind making the top five!
32 natedawg // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:43
i still really like gomez , he had a bad tournament but think it may of just been a big step up for him , he would be ok at the toon cause we wont be in euro comps for a while lol plus kk can get the potential out of any one
33 Dave // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:46
Sorry for the double post haha!
34 WIGAZ // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:46
I’d still take gomez! might be a blessing he’s had a shat tournement! means we might end up with one of the buys of the summer! work really well with either owen or oba!
35 bigarn // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:50
Remember Maric oh and Tomason….etc all jinxed at SJP after such promise. While Arshavin looks like the new Beardsley in more ways than one we seem to scare the skill out of players.
I would suggest the best transfer for NUFC would be a crowd transfer!
36 Danny // Jun 21, 2008 at 11:53
I agree Dave….Patience is very hard to come by on this blog! lol
Dont worry lads…Keegan knows what the team needs and hes not gonna go into a season with an under strength team! The transfers will come!
Were in good hands….

Now I will start to believe things when I know that he has commented.

40 ronaldeano // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:01
@Jabob, i totaly agree. MA has to put his chubby little sausage fingers in his fat pockets and sign a few players who who can make things happen. If (god forbid) we get the scraps by the start of the season and all our targets are snapped up by other clubs, we are screwed, big time. If that happens, i will hold Mike Ashley personaly responsible and i would seriously question why he baught the club in the first place.
Only time will prove me wrong. I hope i am
41 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:10
Spyro….Thats like comparing Nadal to Federer
Nadal’s wins are mostly cause of his huge stamina while Federer uses his brain more than his feet.
But in football life Spyro players like Pandev who is more intelegent thna Babel last longer while Babel’s stamina will soon run out and then what.
Anyway mate everyone’s entitled to their own opinion,it wouldnt be interesting if we agree about everything.
Cheers
42 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:13
Marat…its cause he’s playing for Lazio,a team without service to his goals.
Put Pandev in Man Utd or Arsenal and i’m sure he’ll change your opinion in 90 minutes.
43 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:15
Ronealdano….Spot on mate…we arent even negotiating with anyone never mind signing him.Well i just read on Goal com that Lazio will sign Palacio, maybe our chance for Pandev.
44 Marat18 // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:17
Hadji,
how do ypu think what’s wrong with Roger now?
I do want him winning Grand Slam, he deserves it, but this season he isn’t the same Roger he used to be. May be something to do with confidence, hope Wimbledon will help him.
And Nadal is just soil monster, sometimes I think he is able to play 24/7.
45 DMAG // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:17
Patience!
I’m positive we will see some activity next week.
46 ronaldeano // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:20
@Hadji, MA appointed KK in January and we ALL thaught he would seriously BACK him to the hilt come the summer. Nothing has happend YET, but when all our targets are signed by other clubs i will be realy pi*sed off like.
My Sunday league squad is bigger than NUFC’s atm. The way its going now it will probly stay like that!
47 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:22
we should go for rodrigo palacio, it has been rumoured that lazio have bid 14 million euros and had it accepted. the only thing is KK doesnt want to take the risk on south americans, we should also be going for diogo as a striker, arsenal just bid 9 mill and wont go higher, his club want 12 mill for him and he is worth every single penny.
Ancelotti has said that arshavin is a player he would be very intrested in, so if they come in for him there wouldnt be a competition to sign him, he will just go straight there asmhe is 27 and that will be his first and last big move.
im hearing alot that ronaldo has decided to go madrid (MUG), and fergie was looking at arda, i hope this isnt true, im just saying there are alot of alternatives in tht position around the world so dont be to dissapointed.
Also, missing out on modric is the worst thing that could have happned, he is qaulity above qaulity. every bit the player that cesc fabregas is, we should have just offred 23 million or something and got him straight up, spurs have meant to have got bentley also.
even though mario gomez is having a shocker of a tournament, we should still try sign him
48 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:24
Marat….I think he lacks motivation,he won everything so fast.
49 Marat18 // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:25
btw, it has also been rumoured that Lazio is in 9m (18m usd) Riquelme bid
50 Hadji // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:35
Ronealdano….I knew this would have happened from the day they appointed KK.I hope i’m wrong though…but if we dont sign at least 6 good players then we’re doomed. But dont worry mate cause they will come up with the excuse that not playing in Europe was our big handicap of not attracting good players to the club.
Thats bulls..t if you ask me mate.
Is Lazio in Europe….NO
Palacio even stated that he would love to play for them, and next signing for Lazio will be Riquelme.
The point is Ronealdano…our board is only bidding for players knowing that their bids wont be accepted cause they’re ridiculous bids. And then they come up to the fans by saying that at least they tried but the player didnt wanna join our club cause of this and that.
For MA only to survive in the EPL with those silly wages he’s giving to the players its a huge profit for him at the end of the season…but what about the ambitions….scre* the ambitions as long as he can make 30-40 mill profit a year.
NEWCASTLE IS BIGGER THAN THAT
51 Bob // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:41
Lazio is based in Rome, though. So there is still some attraction for the players.
52 robertsa // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:42
no messing kev we know arsenal and mancity want him so get in there first.
53 Marat18 // Jun 21, 2008 at 12:45
Hadji,
calm down, mate.
may be someone on Lazio messageboard is also complaining about their interest in Palacio and Riquelme, stating that NUFC is going to sign Arda, Arshavin, Gomis etc.
may be you are right, may be you ain’t.
it’s better to be optimistic - at least you are guaranteed few days of a good mood.
54 Davies // Jun 21, 2008 at 15:34
DMAG, do you work for the club?
You’re the only person posting on this site that has been positive about who we’re signing since Modric went to Spurs.
I had a little chuckle when Modric missed his penalty last night and Arda banged his in straight after. It would be somewhat poetic if we actually managed to sign him now.

58 kapulya // Jun 21, 2008 at 22:21
Bugger, that game just sealed our inability to purchase a player who we should of snapped up straight away. Well done to all involved for missing this chance, Arshavin just quadrupled his value and all but guaranteed a move to London…aaaaarrggghhh
59 NUFCAl // Jun 21, 2008 at 22:21
Might as well forget him now boys, we haven’t got a hope in blue hell after that.
By the way, whoever was talking about Wimbledon, apparently Roger Federer has been suffering from glandular fever nearly all year. Lacks motivation, rubbish, he’s on course to become the greatest Wimbledon player of all time this year if he wins.
60 TooooooN // Jun 21, 2008 at 22:48
Russia 3 - Holland 1…
Arshavin is damn world class…we should sign him earlier. Now i guess big clubs will target him and i don’t think we can get him. same goes gor arda.
We never going to compete with other clubs interm of transfer issues.
i can bet we only can sign average players, top 4 rejects and maybe some unknown unproven players….
61 ArtyH // Jun 23, 2008 at 10:49
Well it certanly looks like Ashley is keeping his money in his pocket, I have a feeling that may be catching at the toon. Instead of buying a season ticket ……I’m keeping MY money in MY pocket. Arshavin should have been signed in January as Modric should have been. I’ll watch the toon on MOTD recorded of course as we are alway last to bee shown.
Really sick of what is going on at the toon now!
