Big Sam Scared Of Barton Suicide

July 5th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 79 Comments

Sam Allardyce signed Joey Barton to Newcastle last year for £5.8M, and it was a controversial signing at the time.

sam-2.jpg

Sam Allardyce -concerned for Barton’s frame of mind

So you may think that Allardyce may try to defend his decision to sign the player, after Barton is now serving 6 months in jail for a crime of assault he committed while a Newcastle United player on 27th December last in Liverpool city center.

But in his regular column for a Middle East newspaper, The National, Big Sam has defended his decision to sign Barton, and seems concerned there could be long term repercussions for the midfielder if he is sacked by the club now.

Allardyce said:

“If Newcastle sack him, then it will be another punishment and defeat the objective of Joey trying to put things right and become a better person.”

“It could also be dangerous to take away football from him. He is a complete football man.”

“His life revolves around it; there’s nothing else. Without it, he could re-offend and, even worse, go into a depression.”

“We’ve had people in the past committing suicide because they could not cope with life after professional football.”

“Dave Clement, who was with me at Bolton, was one at 34 and it’s very sad when something like that happens.”

“If Newcastle keep Joey, this is the last chance for him. He is fighting for his future because I don’t think anyone will take him if he steps out of line again.”

“He owes it to the club and playing could help rehabilitate him, especially if he puts something back into the community like working with kids.”

“Joey has had help but he needs to do things for himself now. There is no point blaming other people any more.”

“It’s down to him to steer clear of the people who are not good for him, to steer clear of alcohol and to control his anger.”

“Inside, he will have had time to reflect on what’s happened and I’m sure that he will not want to go through it all again.”

“Prison is the ultimate punishment and if this doesn’t make him want to get things right, then nothing will.”

“If he comes out with an electronic tag around his ankle, that will be a constant reminder about the experience and make him grateful he has a second chance.”

First of all we think Sam is thinking purely of Barton, and doesn’t seem to be interested ind defending his signing, since Joey let Sam, the club and himself down for the assault that happened on 27th December last year in Liverpool.

Barton got a 4 month suspended sentence for his Dabo attack, which occurred last May 1st (2007) while he was still at Eastlands, the trial completing earlier last week.

We think Sam’s words are realistic and to the point, and it’s obvious he hopes that Joey gets one last chance at Newcastle - this would not be his second chance, because he’s already had a few of them already.

We also think Kevin Keegan will have an attitude very similar to Big Sam’s, about Joey, and we think Kevin will try to persuade Ashley and others to give Joey once last chance.

We’ll have to wait until Newcastle meet with Barton, probably next week, when he gets out of jail, and whatever they decide we’ll support the decision.

After having some experience in management for quite a while at IBM, I know he would have been fired from his job long before now, if he worked at the computer company, or most other companies for that matter.

But if Newcastle decide to give him another chance we’ll support and that - and we’ll be pulling for Joey to make good - 100%. It’s not an easy decision for the club, because whichever they go will get plenty of criticism.

If Newcastle give him that last chance - and Joey does make good at Newcastle, that will be some story - but it’s all up to Joey, again, if indeed Newcastle give him one last chance.
Comments welcome.

    ‘Middle East newspaper’

Big Sam is a Fake Sheikh, hahah. :)

  • 2 ToonKing // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:01

although he speaks sense….can someone remind me what’s Sam’s role in the Newcastle United organization again??? ….everyone should mind he’s own business, including Joey, who i think will still prove that he is a good player. He won’t be sacked.

  • 3 The Entertainers // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:07

Its about time Big Sam spoke out regarding the Barton situation.

When it would have been easy for him to say nothing, he has chose to come out in support.

And whether you agree with him or not, i respect Sam for that decision.

  • 4 Yahya Ahmad // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:11

The same goes for me ‘The Entertainers’!

  • 5 Davies // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:16

Agreed Entertainers. I don’t like Sam or Joey, and I really don’t want him at our club, but the comments show Sam to be a bigger man than I would have given him credit for.

Whatever the club decide, we’ll just have to live with it.

  • 6 Spyro // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:22

i dont understand why people hate sam, fair enough he didnt do a good job at the toon in many peoples eyes, but as a pundit and person (from what i have seen) he seems a very level headed, nice guy

the way people go on on here, you would think he took us from top 4 to mid table, we were crap before he came, he just didnt make us better. I dont understand the non stop insults as soon as his name is mentioned.

  • 7 Ross // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:29

agree entertainers. he made the signing, and alot of people dont agree with him.
in light of a serious incident sam hasnt came out and defended his signing, but spoke more about his concerns for barton as another human being.
in the end i didnt like him managing my football club, but fair play to him for this.

  • 8 Frankieboy // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:34

So what do we all do when he goes of the rails again further down the road pussy foot around it all again in case poor Joey gets depressed on his £60K per week.
If you let anyone blackmail your emotions then it is not going to help the situation at all and all that happens is that person will exploit the situation (speaking from professional experience here)
Just compare his situation to gazza, his problems come from the fact he is not involved with football and look at the state of his life at the minute.Yes he has made mistakes (the incident with his ex mrs) but he is a good lad at heart and didn’t get some perverse buzz out of beating people up on a regular basis.
I realise this may sound harsh but the punishment must be fitting to the situation regardless.

at the end of the day since he has been at newcastle, most of this trouble came when he was at man city, he came to newcastle for a fresh start and ok he hasnt done this, he’s put in some half decent performances but watchin him at mancity there is more to come, give him another chance, bescause as much as i hate to say it dont really want anova gascoigne, im not sayin that cus i feel sorry for him, im sayin that cus i believe he has potential, we knew that when we signed him that he will be trouble, i belive that we need to stand by barton cus he is potentialy a great player, jus needs to focus and set a low profile for his career, look what ronaldo did when he came back after shrek stamped on him at the world cup, now im not camparing barton to ronaldo but it jus shows the charecter of a player when he comes out and does that, and i believe that joey has it in his charecter to do this,

1 more chance, for his sake, i know ill be the only 1 ever to say this but 1 more chance

also big respect for big sam on his input

Work with kids!! I would not let him anywhere near my kids. Fat Sam unbeleivable that crack.

  • 12 Frankieboy // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:52

    4pm
He didn’t put a foot wrong on boxing day last he just used his fists.Have you overlooked the fact he was locked up for 6 months for an offence as a Newcastle player bringing the club down with him
You must be related or you are his cell mate who he has put the frighteners on.

  • 13 stjames // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:56

“It could also be dangerous to take away football from him. He is a complete football man. His life revolves around it; there’s nothing else. Without it, he could re-offend and, even worse, go into a depression.”

This is completely ridiculous. I’d say stupid if it wasn’t Big Sam talking. Who’s taking what from whom? Did NUFC sentence Joey? Did NUFC stop him from doing something else than football like getting himself a decent education perhaps. Is NUFC responsible for future offenses or even a depression?

I THINK NOT. NUFC IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS SITUATION EXCEPT MAYBE FOR HIRING HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I sincerely think the best thing that can happen to Joey and the club is to let him go. It’s not right to let him think that he’s so special that no matter what, he’ll always end on top.

Restecp to Sam for speaking some sense for once.. Barton will come good from now on, i hope. I really do feel with the guy, since I know his type of person, and he it does seem like he has been making progress since going to that rehabilitation thing, and has his mind set on changing his life. Hopefully he will and still be a Newcastle player.

  • 16 Frankieboy // Jul 5, 2008 at 22:59

Fat sam is trying to justify his signing him in the first place.
Remember fat Sam walking from the dug out on Sky Sports after the lucky 0-0 at Stoke in the FA Cup.
He was smiling cos he knew he was gonna get well paid off on his way out of the door following that game. That gives you an insight to the type of man he is, like barton it’s all about himself. He wasn’t bothered about the level of the performance or the fans that travelled in the inclement weather, he was smiling, taking the piss cos of what he already knew.

  • 17 Frankieboy // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:05

Fair shout 4pm. The wonders of modern technology…did you use a rubber.
You’ve not denied being his cell mate.

bein honest mate ur attitude is sh*t, ur bein a total wan*er bout this,

in no way in sams comments does it represent anything about defendin his decision to sign barton, hes worrin bout bartons life, as u shud be too if u were a decent person mate, to be honest if ur gonna be so shallow minded and vicious bout this jus f-off yeh!!

    grow up

  • 19 shearer 4 pm // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:09

soz bout the language mate jus feel that people shudnt blame sam for this, barton obviously made a promise to do better, and he let sam down, this cant be blamed on sam, i dont really want barton at the club, i jus dont want him on a downward spiral, he cud honestly benefit from bein loan to a championship club, sumwhere where theres less publicity so he can finish his rehab in peace

and no, im defo not his cell mate :P

  • 20 Tommy // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:12

Slightly alarmist headline don’t you think Ed?

Don’t feel too sorry for him. If his life goes down the pan because he can’t do his job properly, then I’m sure he’s got plenty to fall back on..

  • 21 Matt // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:13

Joey Barton Is Potentially a dimaond, who just needs a little polishing, polishing being drugs to sedate him.

In other news, Oba wont leave, arsenal are already splashing out the upwards and overs of 10 million plus for nasri, arsenal maing two big money signings? never
    sleep easy

  • 22 CRAIGG // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:14

The annoying thing about Barton is when he keeps his nose clean which he doesnt do enough, Like he did when KK came back he is an outstanding player, He was one of our best players in the unbeaten run at the end of the season.

I hope this straightens him out as it did with my cousin when he came out of prison, Settled down with a lass, Kept a job down and stayed out of trouble.

I hope Barton can do the same.

  • 23 geordie genius // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:16

    TRY BRIDON FIBRES JOEY!!!

  • 24 daiv // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:26

How many last chance saloons are there? Three assaults and now another chance?
Having said that, I think we should keep him because he is a decent player and we have not goy too many of them in midfield. if we sacked him, some other Prem outfit would pick him up for nothing and put him on £60K aweek anyway. Why should we lose out?

  • 25 Frankieboy // Jul 5, 2008 at 23:31

    4pm
If Barton turns things around then good luck to him what I am saying is he should not be doing it on out books.
Fat Sam is saying he should not be sacked in case he commits suicide, if he is that concerned why doesn’t he give him £60K a week to help him get
    over it.
I certainly do not want Barton to remain at the club and this decision should not be influenced by Fat sams comments. The reason I feel for the comments bring made.
If it is the case he is suicidal then giving in to appease the situation makes matters worse in the long run.
As I stated I have experience of these situations and these guys were not on £60K.
I also stated I may sound harsh but being tough influences more positve outcomes.
I prefer realistic rather than shallow and vicious.
Barton has made that promise on more than one occasion.
I hope this explaination is more understandable.
You are correct about one thing though bud, my mrs says that I am a complete w?*nker at times, normally when i am pissed.
Time to sign off will catch up on any possible abuse in morning.
The Mrs will be calling me a W&*?ker about 8 O’Clock tomorra night.

As I’ve said before, I and other real Newcastle fans don’t care about Dabo or Scouse charvs. I care about Newcastle United and as Barton was our best midfielder in our end of season run I say keep him.

  • 35 Cloudstrife // Jul 6, 2008 at 0:37

he’s a good footballer. a bad person, but i wouldnt want to see him dead.

  • 36 rory // Jul 6, 2008 at 0:43

I Despise Sam Allarsdyce! I don’t like the way his teams play football, the way he conducts himself to the press, the way he said i have been to many LIVE matches trying to have a pop at kev while being a pundit.

  • 37 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 0:53

Barton will not be sacked,Fact. Barton was our best midfielder last season,Fact. If we don’t pay his wages someone else will snap him up,Fact. i don’t like what he’s done. But lets just get over it. I wanted him hung drawn and quarterd when he was convicted but in this day in age it is becoming common place. Iknow that is no excuse bbut why should we lose out and someone else profit from us taking the morale high ground. He will be back in a Black and white shirt next season and the sooner everyone realises that the better. Sorry about the spelling but i’ve had a few.

  • 38 rory // Jul 6, 2008 at 0:56

Also although i understand his comments i believe they could have been saved for another time as they put more unneeded and unwarrented pressure on newcastle.

  • 39 rory // Jul 6, 2008 at 0:59

Sorry for the add on, but im pretty sure barton was far from our best midfielder last year as many have suggested, i thought he was pretty poor. just ran about kicking perople and generallyplayimng poor balls often ending at the oppositions feet.

  • 40 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:03

Name a better one Rory. Butt gave the ball away i don’t know how many times. Geremi struggles to run and his corners never made it past the first man

  • 41 vin // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:06

So we should feel sorry for everyone who has muuged, attacked, raped, killed, stole, swindled, drank?…..No bloody way, we all have our problems, we all deal with stuff. Don’t jump on this just because one person got “air time” due to him being an ex-manager. barton seems to be like any little charver who couldnt give a shit about anyone elses feelings, or life for that matter, than his own. I hope i am wrong, for his sake. But to fear for his life? Well we could say that about anyone if need be. I hate my job, I get depressed, I have sought counselling…I dont have anyone standing up for me, except myself. But I didnt commit any offences, break the law and especially have scant regard for it. “I dont care if I go to prison” to paraphrase the scouse idiot….so, Barton, if thats the case, then you dont have regard for anything apart from yourself. So why should we care about the repercussions coming to you if you are sacked? Dont get me wrong, i wouldnt qwant anyone come to any harm…ever…..but this lad doesnt think that way himself.
I for one will no doubt find myself in a situaton that tears me apart if he plays for NUFC again using my money…when i would be on the dole if in the same situation, with no one giving a stuff about my mental health.

Nice one Gareth. Living in Liverpool i’l have to pront that off and take it into work on Monday.

  • 46 vin // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:20

thanks…it a hard call…if he was your mate and you knew him (obviously) then you may feel different. But we dont see any remorse…any sort of humbleness which he really should feel considering he takes away £50k a week…in a way id love to meet him, see what hes like and then make a judgment based on fact and feeling..and not what we hear in the papers…preparing the old lynch mob etc. But still, he doesnt sound like the sort of guy I want to know…he not that great a player, so why shed tears over him? he doesnt…doesnt give a stuff about the people who made him a “name”..i.e his employer and fans of Man City and NUFC. I remember when we signed him the MAn C fans were saying he’ll bring disharmony to the club..i wrote it off as sour grapes, well how right they were…BIG style.

  • 47 Gareth // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:22

By the way, a bit ironic of big Sam to suddenly become concerned about players. My mam’s former boss’s son (how convoluted is that!!?) played for him as youth player at Blackpool and apparently he was the most horrific, un-sympathetic, abusive and downright unpleasant man you could wish to work under, and sympathy was low down on his attributes… Maybe he recognises a kindred spirit…

  • 48 vin // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:23

51times we all know you like to act the hard man etc….but yep i do care, if someone is in hardship….i was saying maybe he doesnt deserve it tho. You can have a heart of stone if you like…not for me sorry.

But i think abt Barton…sack him…not for footy reasons…but for the fact he has used up too many chances, and money isnt the be all and end all. get shot.

  • 49 vin // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:27

If i used my head over my feelings then I wouldnt be going next season…but I am, of course….so is that what you mean? I dont think so. Im not having a go…and i dont partcularly want to attack a fellow NUFC supporter, but if u want to then o ahead, but theres more imprtant stuf to spend time on.

  • 50 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:31

Vin i do agree with what you have said but i honestly don’t thisk we should sack him. As i said earlier is we do sack him someone else will sign him and at the end of the day he is still a good footballer. I work in the Prison service in Liverpool and i know his brother the clown that killed that young lad in Huyton now he is a piece of shit but by all accounts Joey is a very nice man until he gets a drink in him

  • 51 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:34

Yes Barton has beaten someone up in a drunken brawl and he was caught on camera doing it. Tony Adams fantastic footballer but a drunk and a wife beater, would Arse fans hang him out to dry. Merson the same. Gascoine a genius but a drunk and a wife beater yet Newcastle and Spurs fans love him. Which is worse Bartons drunken fight or the 3 mentioned?

  • 52 vin // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:37

yeah…its a tricky one i guess. My guts say get rid…why have more chances?….But if thats it…knuckles down, becomes a great player but more importantly a decent human being with or without drink. We cant just use drink as an excuse…”hes a great husband, its just the drink thats talking”. Id prefer if none of it happend of course, but it does stick in my craw that footballers get paid so much, and they only need to be able to play football and are forgiven many sins…allowed to be stupid, childish idiots coz it fits in with the whole “football persona”. Not always the case of course (shearer)…but to get paid, go to prison, not apologise, not take (if misguided) olive branch of a wage cut (still more than my yearly salary)…..kind of kicks you in the nuts.

  • 53 mozza // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:38

51times people forget that he was starting to play really well towards the end of the season, its easy to take the morall high ground, are we all without sin? he’s becoming a bit of a scapegoat for some frustrated fans i think , but then again i’ve been out on the lash all day so what do i know

  • 54 Gareth // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:39

    @Mac
I don’t subscribe to the theory that someone is a prefectly gentle lovely human being when sober but evil alcohol turns them into a raging beast - as far as I’m concerned if someone is violent when they’re drunk they have some sort of a violent temperament when sober too, they just have more awareness and control then. Alcohol does not turn a non-violent person violent.

  • 55 vin // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:40

I hope he does get on the “straight and narrow” like Adams did, for his own sake and others he may hurt. I jus dont know if he should have that time using our money. I dont know…..

  • 56 51times // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:40

Act a hardman? I’m not threatening violence or anything like that. I’m just saying that I don’t see why we should get rid of him for beating up two people who have nothing to do with Newcastle United.

  • 57 mozza // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:40

vin you said it better than me pal

  • 58 Mac // Jul 6, 2008 at 1:41

O don’t get me wrong the money they’re on is criminal in itself. But what i am getting at is unfortunately this is the world we live in and things like the Barton incident are common place. We see them every weekend in Liverpool and Newcastle. I just don’t see the point in Sacking him as someone else will benefit from NUFC taking the morale high ground

Fair enough Mac. In a way maybe he should be applauded for, in his general everyday sober demeanour, trying to be a nice guy, perhaps against his instincts, genes or upbringing. But if he wants to be accepted as such, I reckon he has to prove himself first, not be given last chances - you can have a ludicrously highly paid job AFTER you’ve kept your nose clean in the face of provocation, not until you don’t. That’s why I say sack him, and if he works hard and improves himself as a person maybe someone will take a chance on him, and fair play to him then.

Id get sacked from my job….wouldnt you…..They get paid so much more than me in their job, why should they also be treated like a higher human being also????? If he was sacked, he would be forgotten about within weeks. Hes no hero, not a footballing one by any stretch (lol)…so why worry. NUFC lose money maybe…but dont loose face. ANy club is welcome to him.

At the end of the day everyone on this website would be sacked because unfortunately we’re not footballers. However this isn’t the rel world Gareth this is football. If we sack him he’ll be back in full time employment by the start of the season earning just as much as he is now. But just imagine if we can turn the situation around and we can change Joey. Now that is a story,we signed the player and at the first sign of trouble we drop him. Now imagine if Arsenal had of done that with Adams and Merson. People deserve a chance and deserve help when they need it.

51times, I just read one of your comments on an earlier post saying you wanted to use Zyklon B–the poison gas the Nazis used on Jews and others at the death camps–on Tottenham fans.

You probably made the comment in jest (I truly hope so) but, what the hell is wrong with you?

I take most of the posts here in stride, but that’s disgusting.

You’re bang out of order. That’s seriously wrong.

  • 69 xfer // Jul 6, 2008 at 3:47

I understand where Sam is coming from. Totally agreed with him. As much as I feel disgusted about his behaviour, i think he should be given one last chance (ok, how many times have this been said).

We all want to see him turn into a better person, get the devil out of him, and honestly, if you are in his position, you will think that after all the reflection he had in jail, he must surely realise this is indeed his last chance. If he blew it, its his own fault.

Hes still a decent player and could still have a future with the club, lets just give him another chance. Sacking him might do him a huge blow.

Who cares!!! Stop writings such crap. Barton is a thug, and allardyce is a low league wa”"£ looking for publicity. According to the sun Asley wants £420 for the ckub. Wot tos.Keegan will deliver anyway!!! Sick of reading rubbish man! Calm doon th lot of us.

Osama Bin Laden’s family want to buy us :D is that a good thing or a bad thing. i can imagine it “Let us win or we’ll send a suicide bomber.

A wealthy construction company run by the family of terrorist Osama bin Laden has emerged as a front-runner to buy Newcastle United. (Mail on Sunday)

This is typical Allardyce covering his arse for making another stupid signing. Allardyce who prides himself on player’s background checks - what a joke !!
Allardyce was arrogant enough to think he could turn Barton around when all the evidence suggested otherwise. Oh well let’s give Barton another 300th second chance. Suicide do me a favour. Barton loves himself way too much and thinks he’s untouchable, which sadly that useless judge has let him be. Barton failed the fans, but that judge has failed soiciety in general.
Ed you seriously need to look at the comments of 51 times and toon4life. I’m all for free speech, but these 2 are are a couple of very offensive and sick individuals. It’s a NUFC forum, not the BNP.

  • 74 Guinea Mag // Jul 6, 2008 at 9:50

I believe KK will want to give Barton one last chance to redeem himself. If so, I only hope he takes this oppertunity and stops pressing his self destruct button…..

Barton has so much potential but no player is bigger than NUFC and whether MA decides to sack him or give him one last chance, he must tow line!

  • 75 Frankieboy // Jul 6, 2008 at 10:45

Mac I agree with Vin about barton.
However if you read posts 8 & 25 last night am sure you can see the point I was trying to get across given your vocation.
Am sure given fat sam’s comments yesterday then the powers that be now have Barton on a 2052.,
Can you imagine the press if he was not considered a risk inside and he attempted to “end it all”. That is his attention seeking went too far. Don’t you agree.

  • 76 clinta // Jul 6, 2008 at 12:08

One potentially suicidal player(especially one like joey barton!) is nothing like the at least 52,000 suicidal geordies on a weekly basis when fat sam was in charge of the club.

thank god he was sacked , other wise there may not of been many of us left to support the toon!!

  • 77 Obafan // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:43

    1. Barton was defo not our best midfielder in the lasqt couple of games last year.
    2. How many more chances has he already had in the past???
    3. A ‘noirmal’ emplayee would be sacked the first hour after the fight in Liverpool. So wgy should NUFC not do that.
    4. Having him in our team will scare players to come to NUFC. I’m sure of that. Wha wants to be involved in a fight; like the Dabo thing.
    5. He is a disgrease to NUFC; the club’s reputation is going to be damaged if we keep him.

    Conclusion: Sack that dangerous guy!

  • 78 gonufc // Jul 6, 2008 at 16:16

These comments irritated me, especially this “Without it, he could re-offend and, even worse, go into a depression”. For the majority, his peace of mind is not a major worry, those he assaulted i expect would like him to spiral into depression but i certainly don’t go that far. I just don’t like him trying to shift the thoughts of many to feel sorry for him, as that just distances Allardyce from a poor transfer target, if people see Barton as a frail Deer in headlights then Allardyce will be seen as an attempted saviour. When the fact is he’s just an ungrateful idiot and Allardyce was a very poor manager.
