Phillips May Be Key To Ameobi Move To WBA

July 6th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 21 Comments

West Bromwich manager Tony Mowbray expects to find out in the next day or so (maybe today) whether veteran striker Kevin Phillips will remain at the club or make the switch to Birmingham City.

Kevin Phillips - WBA’s former Sunderland striker may move to Birmingham

Phillips was West Bromwich Albion’s leading scorer last season with 24 goals, and he is now attracting interest from Blues manager Alex McLeish.

If he does decide to switch clubs he wouldn’t need to move at all, since WBA is close to Birmingham.

WBA manager Mowbray is keen to keep the 34-year-old for another year, and held talks with him yesterday, on whether he would be willing to stay at the club.

If Phillips does move, that could mean that Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi’s mov to WBA could be back on, as Mowbray looks for experience in his front line.  Earlier it had been agreed with Shola that he would move to WBA, but then Phillips indicated he may stay.

Mowbray expects to learn with the next day or so whether Phillips will be staying at the club.

Mowbray said:

“I am pretty sure it will be resolved one way or the other in the next day or two.”

With Shola still not moved out of Newcastle, he will be reporting for training with the rest of our squad, tomorrow at Newcastle.

However, it is clear that Kevin Keegan does not see Shola as part of his new revolution at the Tyneside club.

Hopefully Shola moves on and fetch us a good price.

Stroller wants to stay at NUFC because it is a great club and pays loads. Which club will pay the same sort of money for a very average player. He would probably prefer to sit on bench than take 50% pay cut. Stroll on.

i agree we dont want ameobi hes no good and cant even get a game for the magpies

The issue here is simple, Phillips scores goals Amiobi doesnt. Why do we need him, he’ll be money wasted and as a club we cant afford those sort of mistakes. Give Kevin his 2 years and look elsewhere for a promising young striker to come through with him.

West Brom is’nt in Birmingham and we don’t want Ameobi!!

Fairplay BAGGIEBOY. He was good in his day, which was a while ago now.

It might just be that he needs a new opportunity to prove his worth somewhere else. I know he wasn’t brilliant at Stoke, but you never know.

I wouldn’t want him either though. I think he’s lost his premier league quality.

Has anybody seen the story the Mackem Echo has put up this morning re Bin Laden??

Ouch, I hope they have done their research on this otherwise I can see a MASSIVE law suit coming on.

We might get an unexpected boost to our transfer kitty with a bit of luck!!

Might be interesting to see Osmana doing his next terrorist broadcast from his cave in a Toon shirt.

Why not do a swap, he might be getting on but he is still more likely to score goals than Shola.

It has only been reported in the chronic’le that Ameobi was going to west brom, I for one cant see TM signing somebody whose goal record is as poor as his, after hearing all you geordies up here whinging about him being “so laid back his head needs a rollerskate” I definately dont want him, Godforbid we do sign him, at least he will score against you like your other loan signings do :)

EVERYONE…. i have news thats a bit late…. but Ameobi is joining Glen Roader at Norwich in the next few days.

Didn’t anyone watch that pre-season training interview Glen gave to skysportsNews on thursday/friday.

Well if you didn’t he talked about Norwich and when asked about signings he replyed…
“we are on the verge (or very hopeful…I cant remember exactly) of signing a premiership player”

Now everybody knows that Glen is an admirer of Ameobi (when Glen took charge his goal ratio averaged a goal every 2 games)and he has tried to sign him before and even tried to get him on loan last January.

Players don’t get trasfered on a weekend so expect some news on the deal sometime next week.

the “bin ladin” they refer to is probably the Saudi Bin Ladin group which is one of the most respective companies in the middle east and, I understand, has no existing ties with Osama.

  • 20 Tom_Toon // Jul 6, 2008 at 13:27

Nick, that is Bin Ladens family, but they are allright people, unlike him.

If they do take over it will be egg on the face of the “newcastle fan” Ashley, making a profit from his own club leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
