Lots and lots of communication from Kevin today on the official web site, so he seems to have ended his long silence big time - good.

Danny Guthrie - high praise from Kevin today
There was a little disappointment with Newcastle fans, when Newcastle signed Liverpool’s Danny Guthrie, but the more we find out about the lad, the more we like what we see.
Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has today compared him with former Toon favorites, Rob Lee and Paul Bracewell - praise indeed.
If Danny can get anywhere near to the contribution those two made at the club, he will be one of our best buys.
The 21-year-old has been training for the last couple of weeks with his new team-mates, and it looks like he’ll definitely get a game tomorrow at Hartlepool United.
Kevin talked again to nufcTV at the club’s training ground:
“Young Danny Guthrie, he’s a little bit of a mix, for the older fans, between Paul Bracewell and Rob Lee.”
“He’s that type of player. Good engine, a very good passer of the ball. A link-up player who can get around the field and of course in the Premier League you need that.”
“And over time he’ll probably learn to play in a defensive-midfield holding position.” “Both of those signings (Guthrie and Gutierrez) I’m really pleased with.”
“Obviously, the whole world knows that the squad is too small. Every Newcastle fan and the people at the club know that.”
“But getting the right players in was always going to be tough because there is a lot of competition for good players.”
Somehow we feel a little bit heartened by what Keegan has said today, about the size of the squad, and that Newcastle will, for sure, be bringing in more players.
It may well be that Danny Guthrie will get some games initially in the season, and that will be a chance for him, especially with Joey Barton still twiddling his fingers in jail - why do I feel depressed when I write that?
We’ll see how Guthrie does tomorrow, and Kevin has said he will field a strong side, although it’s sometimes hard to judge just how good players are, in pre-season games .
Comments welcome.

I am excited to see if he is as good as KK says (of course he will be)
2 ehssi // Jul 18, 2008 at 16:16
he will be the new Robert Lee
3 Leo // Jul 18, 2008 at 16:23
will this game be televised anywhere???
just a quick thought, maybe keegan has broken the silence today because he feels bad treating us to a new signing every friday two weeks running and this friday he is unable to do so, so he perks us up with his words of wisdome

Guthrie and Gutierrez seem to be very sensible signings… thank god the days have gone (I hope) that newcastle sign big name players that do nothing for the team! look forward to seeing who else will come in.

i think it might be another season before we start to see him more regularly. looking at kks comments it looks as though he wants him to be the long term successor to butt. hopefully if he can improve is defensive game he could be just that.
keep the faith

Just a quick question lads, on the official site, on the freeview: toon in training video, just over halfway through, can anyone tell me who that person wearing the orange bib and orange boots is? cheers

I see why he pulled on the Inlar deal is he doesn’t have 5mill to buy a defensive mid as he want Guthrie to play that role. All I hope is he keeps us informed as he’s been silent for ages due to finding players. Is there a way to watch highlights of hartlepool???
8 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 16:40
i knew it, i said this would happen, we dont want to spend money, so Guthrie was bought to provide competition for both Butt and Barton, i KNEW IT!
This would also explain why we weren’t really after Aimar, Gutierrez can play all of Aimar’s positions and more.
Also explains the Bassong Trial, competition for both the CB position and LB position, and the fact that we aren’t selling much players e.g. Duff & Smith
A lot of fans are going to be disappointed this transfer window, this is an indication that we aren’t going to sign many players, 5 max i think (not including youth squad players)

damn i’m reading your comments allways, but 80% of them are just crying about everything, we bought 21 y-o, with lots of potential, and you still cry… c’mon guys, keep faith in King Kev, and we should be as optimistic as he is !

I can’t find it, the new site is poor

If Guthrie is as good as KK says and he proves that early into the season then it’s bye bye Barton.
That will be until Barton assaults him in training rendering him unable to play for a few weeks and guess who will be expected to step in …..thats right barton.
Am I being a little synical boys.

Hi Ed,
any news on the players that we were hearing about 1-3 weeks ago and went under the raidar?
We had alot of quality young quality players we were linked with, sounds like the right players for the clubs ambitions right? so what happened?
or its all just rumors?
(sorry if I write some of the names wrong)
Inler
Gomis
and others
Someone also mentioned the player from Chile, Martinez is the name?
And the Liverpool Insua.
by the way, can someone explain to me please why some of the guys here have their names in BLUE ?
Thanks.
15 AndyNUFC // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:12
DC it’s on the right underneath the video player.
16 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:16
FrankieBoy why have you changed your name again mate?
Oleg G, names in blue have links to an internet address.

18 harrier // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:17
Andy looks like Carroll to me
19 Danny // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:18
Looks to me by KKs comments, that he’s really trying to build something. And not just scramble things together to keep it going, or getting the quantity.
It needs to be right from the start, and not fixed at the end of every season. But the squad is extremely thin. And we need allot more depth, but KK knows that, I just hope we can straighten it out in time…
20 toonfan1 // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:20
thats not andy carroll because he is currently injured. i think it is terziev who has came on trial for a week
21 AndyNUFC // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:22
Can you tell me more about this Terziev? Looks like a tall lad by first glance.
22 ToonKing // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:27
it’s Ryan Donaldson
23 harrier // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:27
http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php
Andy Carroll is not injured anymore
24 JackP // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:33
I’m presuming someone like Gomis will be our next signing, as Jesse’s diets as presented by Kevin Keegan appears to be following the tack of “this season I will be mostly signing players beginning with G…”
25 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:41
Terziev probably, looks like Carroll, no way is it Donaldson though, he is quite small.
26 toonfan1 // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:48
does anyone remember the name of that player who said he was better then george weah who graeme souness signed in his time at southampton
27 Tom_Toon // Jul 18, 2008 at 17:52
Ali Dia
28 Lacedaemonian // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:00
Was George Weah’s cousin apparently but turned out to be just a random bloke called Ali Dia who had no footballing ability. Souness picked him for a league match despite this sheer lack of ability. Proof enough of his ineptitude.
Ali Dia also played for Gateshead.

Spyro ur pessimism is really starting to piss me off :@, im all for each to his/her own opinion but every comment u make is jus belittling KK and newcastle saying we arent gonna get newhere cos we havent the ambition or buyin the players that would never consider us nemore. y not jus hold ur tongue unless its summit good?
30 toooooon fan // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:05
tom toon why dont you do the old fantasy football
test that big football brain of yours
31 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:39
When did i say NUFC arent going to get anywhere? I haven’t said anything negative about our ambition for ages now, and when i did i retracted my statement shortly after so please get your facts right.
32 Frankieboy // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:43
Spyro , namechange comment straight over me bonce mate, can you enlighten me.
33 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:45
there is a blogger on here named agnathe or something who is claiming to be you, i knew it was bull****, its that nob fernando
34 Frankieboy // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:48
Dirk
Think you have got spyro’s pessimism mixed up with realism mate
We all tend to dream this is gonna be our year and then the realism kicks in, normally about September.
Think he is saying it how it will be
and not how we all want it to be.
35 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:52
i wasnt even being negative thats the crazy thing about it. Im just saying that those who expect a lot of signings will be disappointed, thats it
36 Frankieboy // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:53
Not aware of this, have there been some derogatory comments made like.
If its abusive or offensive then it aint me.
That was me before with the post about Barton tho.
I can’t change me colours on that one .
37 Frankieboy // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:54
Think thats what I was trying to explain to Dirk in your defence.
38 Danny G // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:57
That player to me looks a bit fat to be Carroll…
I thought I recognised him and I found this link…Does look like him to me but I doubt it is really him!

39 Spyro // Jul 18, 2008 at 18:58
@ Frankieboy
the fernando guy is just pretending to be a toon fan whilst making slight pops at us and bigging up other teams, have a look through some of the previous articles and you will notive it, he is unbelievably sad
40 Hadji // Jul 18, 2008 at 19:07
Fernando…..The best nick for you would be ”CHAMELEON”
41 Frankieboy // Jul 18, 2008 at 19:14
Hadji
spreading some bad Karma there.
Spyro mate people who aren’t Toon fans are just looking for the “bite”
If all such comments are constantly ignored and they don’t instigate a reaction then they will get bored very quickly and move on to try to annoy somebody else on another site.
They have picked this site cos it’s obviously the best.
Am sure Ed agrees.

Is Owen in holidays?
I think so, I’ve heard no news about the Golden Boy and didn’t see him in the pre-season trainings.
46 Ben // Jul 18, 2008 at 20:58
I think the ideal replacement for Viduka is Kuyt,he has shown his desire last year when playing out of position put still putting in some serious shifts. His link up play wiht Owne and Maritns, plus his pace isnt too bad and work ethic is tireless would prove invaluable and talk of a £7 million fee,all be it speculative, is a good price for the player and how he would be used at Newcastle, very similar ot his position he played previously when he banged goals in for fun in the good old dutch league.
47 Oleg G // Jul 19, 2008 at 2:11
thanks Spyro, I thought the Blue is for people who have a “high” status on the blog, someone who writes here alot of something like that.
by the way- about owen, what’s going on with his contract ?! he signed? I don’t remember that I saw something about that, but maybe I missed it ?!?
