HT: Hartlepool 1 Newcastle 1: Magpies Fight Back

July 19th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 101 Comments

In their first pre-season game of the season Newcastle found themselves level with hosts Hartlepool United, after 45 minutes, with the scores at 1-1.

hartlepool.png nufc-crest.png

In a lively first half that had both teams playing attacking football, the first half ended with the teams level at 1-1.

Both sides started well with Hartlepool having more of the play in the first 5 minutes but then Newcastle started to get into their stride.

But then, after just 16 minutes Hartlepool took the lead, when Joel Porter sprung Matty Robson clear with a ball that went behind the Newcastle back four, and the winger shot nicely past the oncoming Shay Given.

It looked to be some poor positional play by Newcastle, and no doubt they will go through this goal next week with the coaching staff.

The game was to and fro and both sides could have scored as Newcastle looked to come back in the game, and on 40 minutes Newcastle finally drew level.

They broke quickly out of defense with James Milner with the ball and Damien Duff in support of the 22 year-old.

Milner then waited and then put the ball through to Duff, and the Irishman placed the ball nicely past the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net, from just inside the penalty area. A nice goal from the Irishman - and maybe Damien can start to score more goals for us.

But it’s a nicely worked goal from the Magpies and very well put away by Duff. This will be a big confidence booster for the Irishman, who hasn’t scored many goals in his two years on Tyneside.

A minute later and Newcastle were almost ahead after Oba Martins rounded goalkeeper Lee-Barrett - and had tried to tap the ball home, but he missed but it was a difficult chance for the Nigerian, and he was alert enough to almost get the ball in the net.

Just before half time Charles N’Zogbia hit a terrific shot from distance and the goalkeeper could only parry the ball, and it was cleared for a corner - a great effort from the Frenchman.

The half time whistle came, and we would expect some changes to be made for the second half, with presumably 21 year-old Danny Guthrie coming in for his Newcastle United debut.

Someone just pointed this out on 606:

Danny Guthrie has now done more in less than half a game than Alan Smith done in a whole season, its very true!!

Get Smith ooot, dunno why Martins came off and smith stayed on? maybe its incase of injury, and lets be honest if Smith gets injured its better for us in the long run!!!

  • 53 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:34

sounds like forster is having to make some saves

  • 54 Martin // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:35

    cheers lads!

  • 55 Stephen // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:35

Its Amazing to think that Ameobi for years has gotten away for being a sh*t footballer…

He gets atleast 30 grand a week maybe even more and plays for a huge club and wouldnt even be good playing for my local team Cork City………..

    Talking bout my local team

maybe we should buy dave mooney.

    Scors like 2 goals a game…..

Could get him for like 200 grand maybe

Is alot better than kevin doyle who played for us too…

I heard he is training with blackburn at the moment we should try to hijack the deal

would be worth 10 million in a few years

  • 56 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:37

    isnt he about 24 now?

  • 57 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:39

duff sounds like he is keen to make an impact this yr

  • 58 Stephen // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:39

He is 23 but the man has being lethal in front of goal has extreme pace and is alot more clinical infroont of goal than doyle

Doyle left for 10 grand at the time and reading turned him into a 10 million player he is only worth 5 now as reading got relagated

    but if anyone likes doyle

then mooney would be the guy to go for cause he is much better

  • 59 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:40

    duff is having a blinder

  • 60 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:40

duff just missed out on a hattrick def M.O.M

  • 61 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:40

doyle has never been worth anything over 5million in my eyes, and i am talking about when he was in his best form

  • 62 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:41

Hope Duff keeps this form up :D

  • 63 Piers // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:41

Duff is having a great day…..and by the way i really don’t like Allan Smith….no point in keeping him at the club…..didn’t even score last season.

  • 64 Ross // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:41

according to nufc.co.uk duff sounds like he’s having a brilliant game?
fair enough its not prem opposition but its refreshing to hear he’s in the thick of the action.

  • 65 shirts // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:42

Always felt Duff’s been unlucky. Hopefully with a proper pre-season, he comes back to life… FOR US–not some other club.

  • 66 ToonKing // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:42

Duff is having an impressive game…….maybe he can spark some kind of form..

  • 67 Stephen // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:42

    Doyle or Ameobi

I wonder who would be the better squad player ha

  • 68 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:42

good news is even against hartlepool sounds like we are playing inventive attacking football.

Best not get too excited eh.

  • 69 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:43

Doyle is worth about 2.5-3million now, no more

  • 70 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:43

smudge is a waste of cash a real joke

  • 71 Stephen // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:43

    Im irish.

Duff is world class when he played for Blackburn he was probably one of the best left midfielders in the game.

He went to Chelsea and was fantastic with robben down the other side

Injurys and age have effected him as a player

    but if he stays fit

then he is still REAL QUAILTY

  • 72 neil009 // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:44

Join the club Piers, Alan Smith is an over-gelled tool. A tool not in the useful Handy Manny type of way either.

  • 73 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:44

I agree Duff was best at Blackburn, but he was only good at chelsea for one season

  • 74 Midlandstoon // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:45

maybe Duffers can do the same thing with Jonas this season and cause havock swapping wings

  • 75 Patrick // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:46

Glad see DD seems to regain his terrific form in Blackburn and Chelsea!

  • 76 thelongshanks // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:46

    Duff having a stormer!

  • 77 Spyro // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:47

Duff is playing well apparently, but lets not get carried away, this is hartlepool remember

  • 78 Stephen // Jul 19, 2008 at 16:47

I hope we buy an attacking player by next week

Lets bid for arteta or Reyes

And just hope we get one of them with abit of luck

I couldnt face having Smith and butt in the centre of the park..

Its soooooooo boring and gives me nightmares :(

  • 88 euanpolo // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:02

  • 89 Geordie Gerrard7 // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:02

duff got a hattrick, ideal ian beale

this little quote made me chuckle:

Shola Ameobi then somehow to contrived miss an open goal. The Newcastle substitute held off Humphreys, rounded Lee-Barrett and then unbelievably managed to back-heel the ball when all he had to do was pass it into the empty net

  • 90 Stephen // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:03

I can confirm to you now

Ameobi will never get a hatrick in his football career starting from now

  • 91 ToonKing // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:05

good start to the pre-season, looks like Duff had a blinder, hope he keeps it up.

Doncaster Rovers next and then hopefully we can watch the rest.

    HOWAY !!!

  • 92 Ben_BKK // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:10

    bloody typical shola, eh… :P

Good to see Guthrie with an assist and a goal, and hopefully Duff might start something good.

  • 93 figsdad // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:12

shola is a pile of crap should just leave now.,..

  • 94 Rocking Rio // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:19

Let’s leave the Ameobi knocking to one side for a bit, hey? Get off the bandwagon.

He’s a decent, honest bloke and in case it passed you by, set up one of the goals today, in a game that was going nowhere until he took to the field.

Sure, it’s only Hartlepool you might say, but the way you’re treating Duff and Guthrie after this game, you’d think Newcastle had just signed Keegan and Toshack in attack.

  • 95 Darryl // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:20

I heard ameobi is the new Berbatov? :P

  • 96 Toon1978 // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:23

I really do hope we get a few more players through the door ie defenders. IMO we need another CB a LB and an attacking midfielder and another striker.

    CB-Evans
    LB-Bridge or Insua
AM-Diego or Turan probably a little ambitious lol but we can hope.
    Striker-Gomez would be nice!!!!!!!

Probably an ambitious list but if we are to push for Europe we need that class of player.

  • 97 Toon1978 // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:25

Maybe buying JONAS has put a bullet up Duffs backside so he has decided to buck his ideas up.

  • 98 beye the great // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:32

smith i think is a good player though he hasnt proved it with us though with king kevs ability to bring out the best in players i feel he can do well and he should not be so harshly criticized at the very least he has gave a 100 per cent which last year was one of the things people complain about under allardyce but smith always did his best and not to forget that he does have ability its just a question of getting it out of him and with the work he put in he atleast deserves a 2nd chance

  • 99 normski1930z // Jul 19, 2008 at 17:40

Striker-Gomez would be nice!!!!!!! yes he would but fat boy aint gonna way over nee 18 mill tho….

  • 100 Matt // Jul 19, 2008 at 19:52

    Gomez wouldn’t come here anyway.

  • 101 Rubber Guard // Jul 19, 2008 at 20:46

Who was responsible, if anybody, for their goal was it Cacapa or Edgar? Some are pointing the finger at Edgar. The kid has just come back from a hernia operation and is not 100% but really wanted to play today as his mum was over from Canada to attend the game. I like the look of him but some have already decided he wont make it.
