Newcastle United Reserve Team manager Adam Sadler seemed satisfied with the lads’ performance at Gateshead last night when the Reserves gained a 1-1 draw, against a good Gateshead side.

With Kevin Keegan, his coaching staff, and goalkeeper Steve Harper watching from the stands, we’re sure the youngsters would love to have impressed the boss.
But Gateshead are a good team, and gained promotion last year to the Conference North, and made it very difficult for the young Reserve side last night.
It certainly wasn’t a great performance, but so much better then the 6-2 defeat against Newcastle Benfield last week.
Sadler spoke today about the game:
“It was a good Gateshead side and they were well organized.”
“So credit to Ian Bogie and Jeff Wrightson for that.”
“In terms of our work ethic and fighting spirit, the lads put in a real shift again.”
“However, I don’t think there is any doubt we need to be better with the ball – particularly when they started to tire in the second half.”
“We forced our passes and gave it away within one or two passes – we would expect the lads to do better.”
“I would like to see a bit more adventure and creativity around opposing penalty areas too.”
“But what we did get was a real honest performance from the lads at Gateshead.”
“It was vital to get some confidence and we gave ourselves a platform to build on.â€
The crushing defeat at Sam Smith’s field last week against Newcastle Benfield was probably still on the minds of a lot of the youngsters, so it was good to get a solid display under their belts.
Adam continued:
“We had been back only two weeks at Benfield and we were quite cold in terms of organisation – and that’s not making excuses.”
“However, the two lads who played center-half at Benfield – Ben Tozer and Callum Morris – came on against Hartlepool on Saturday, and they did very well.â€
Newcastle’s next Reserve game is quite a ways off, on August 13th (3 weeks tomorrow), against Newcastle Blue Star at Kingston Park.
But it’s expected that quite a few of the young lads will be participating in the upcoming first team games against Doncaster Rovers and the Multi-Media Sports Cup tournament in Majorca.
That will be an opportunity for some of them to catch Kevin’s eye, and maybe even stake a claim to a first team squad number, for the coming season.
Both full-backs Callum Morris and Darren Lough looked very good last night, and they will probably get a run out for the first team at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium, this coming Saturday.

There’s a whole season ahead yet, so we shouldnt worry too much if the team dont click straight way.
I’m sure the youngens will have a good season.

he does .. but he cuts inside everytime .. and he passes the ball very well .. plays more like a center midfielder out on the wing IMO…

off topic but stuttgart have said fernando meira can leave- would he be worth a punt Ed? I think he would!
Also, what do people think of the idea of playing a song over the tannoy after we score? A favourite is the song played after each goal at euro 2008- I would love it if that was played over the tannoy after every goal we scored- what does everybody else think?

Whilst accepting it is a pre season friendly there is still a need to put in a good show and by all accounts it was far from that - las t min equaliser - after a 4-1 reversal against Benfield Motors. SATISFIED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a nugget you are. It was boys versus men. We had a group of young boys playing against Newcastle Benfield and Gateshead who have alot of ex professionals playing.. What did you expect? Judge are boys against boys there own age! Sadler is doing a great job what do you know about coaching?

Anyway apparently we’ve offered £5m plus the Zog for some player I’ve never heard of and can’t remember without going back and looking.
