Newcastle In For Deportivo’s Coloccini Again?

July 25th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 91 Comments

Newcastle United have been interested in Argentine and Deportivo La Coruna’s central defender Fabricio Coloccini for over 18 months now, and reports today, in the Independent, suggest that Kevin Keegan and Newcastle may be after him again.

Fabricio Coloccini - Newcastle after him again?

Fabricio would cost around £8M and Coloccini has been known to Premier League scouts over the last few years, but there are some nagging doubts about his suitability for the English game.  Glenn  Roeder first became interested in the player back in January, 2007.

We’ve always liked Fabricio, but it’s difficult to know how big defenders will do in the Premier league, and you must be physical or else you just will not do well, as we witnessed last season with David Rozehnal.

An advantage with Coloccini is that he is versatile, and has played both at right-back and as a defensive midfielder for Deportivo in Spain.

Coloccini is 6′0″ tall and has appeared 99 times for Deportivo and 27 times for Argentina, and he was was born in Córdoba, Argentina.

He went to AC Milan in 1999 but was loaned out to a number of clubs before he joined Deportivo permanently in 2004.

Coloccini is a good player, but since he’s untested in the English Premier League, he would still be some level of risk if Keegan does sign him.

Coloccini is contracted to Deportivo for the next three years, but the fact that we have just signed another Argentine, Jonas Gutierrez, should help him settle on Tyneside, if he does finally arrive.

Only yesterday, Keegan challenged the club to bring in two defenders, before the squad travels to Mallorca next week.

We’ll have to wait to see if we can achieve that goal, but time is starting to run out in the transfer window, and we just must start bringing some top players to the club.

Comments very welcome.

i hope we pull this off to get over the bitter disappointment of being apparently being knocked back by antos ferdinob!!
id have been gutted to sign ferdinand because hes is pretty average but mostly cos hes an absolute tool.
Would love to get Collocini though so i hope this is true!

  • 5 Taiwantoon // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:27

He is too expensive at 8M, isn’t he? Don’t think he will settle for a small financial package too.

  • 6 geordie // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:28

id prefer this lad than than rios little bro, lets hope jonas can persuade him to opt for tyneside.

Spurs are after him so is west ham so we got to get in there quick.

    But carn’t see it myself…

  • 9 gorskino10 // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:32

I agree a tad too expensive but he would be a first choice defender I feel. And if he wants a left back he will not have enough cash for a mid or striker but atleast in the last few days he is a positive player we have been interested in.

    hope we get him

  • 13 broon ale // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:36

i am hoping that newcastle are encouraged to make some quality signings due to the fact that sunderland are splashing out on 4 players which are not bad at all.

i hope it serves to encourage our board to make some moves.

it looks like he has only spent approx 4-5 million so far but brought in 6-7 million by selling players.

his net spend since he has been here is pathetic.

  • 18 Cyprus-Toon // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:44

We wont get him, either because we won’t spend 8mil on a player or he turns us down due to lack of wages or free suits.. :(

    This is feckin depressing!!!

I would like to see young Evans from Manu U too. I assume now that the mackems are no longer interested after their recent acquisitions.

Could be worth a cheeky 5million bid?!

  • 25 liam // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:49

we’ve been linked with this guy for the last few seasons and every time all it is is paper talk. I can’t see him joining newcastle just like he hasn’t the last few seasons. To put it in a nutshell newcastle are in a real bad situation and i think we are going to struggle to get any class in the squad this summer.

  • 32 Hatty // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:56

Ed, Keegan DID NOT challenge the club to bring in two defenders in the next week. There were no qoutes from Keegan. ALAN OLIVER challenged the club to bring in defenders in the next week.

  • 33 dick // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:57

8 million , no way the toon are going to pay that for one player. may as well sign 4 championship players for that, because thats where we will be next year

  • 34 Hatty // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:57

Keegans latest on transfer (from Newcastle World Interview):

    - he isn’t expecting any news imminentely.
    - working very hard behind the scenes.
    - not just our club - most clubs are struggling to tie players down that will improve their team.
    - doesn’t know how long before a breakthrough, could be a week, ten days, or they could come just before the start of the season.
    - emphasises that everyone’s working hard and it’s just a case of being patient.

  • 35 David Dutch // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:57

well here we are again, the new season just around the corner and we are looking to see what scraps the Mackems and anyone else don’t want so we can pick them up. Unfortunately not many players will come for the minimum wage packet so I think Mr A needs to adopt a different attitude regarding players wages. Unfortunately you have to pay the indurty’s going rates if you want the best, of course if you want monkeys they will come for peanuts and the odd bottle of brown. I do not think that the management structure has worked out either, I doubted it from the start as you were taking decision making out of a manager’s hands and the clubs that have tried to do it have reverted back mainly to the old way of doing things. I could just imagine Fergie or Wenger leaving everything to someone else especially someone who has not had the experience of dealing with the right end of the market if we are to be a big club, and someone who will not say no to Mr A ‘cos he wants his ‘cushy number down South. I am afraid fellas unless a miracle happens we are in for another season of medeocrity and maybe KK will call time if he can afford to walk and then we can have Mr Wise as manager I would rather have Gordon Brown, well he is used to losing isn’t he?

  • 36 Ericles // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:58

A good signing if…but hope it is just not more speculation. I still believe that the split setup between Wise etc in London and KK and the rest in Newcastle is a recipe for the disastrously slow
transfer situation. The way things are going we will be challenging the EPL with a skeleton!

  • 41 valle // Jul 25, 2008 at 11:14

Some guys posted concerns that the Modric bid was just a hoax yesterday and i have been thinking about it… KK went puplic with the failed bid a few days after he went to Spurs and said that we had a bid for him accepted but he chose Spurs over us. That means that either KK knew it was a hoax and lies to us all, or the entire regime of upstairs men are perfectly happy to lie to KK and have him do the sympathy talks to the media… I really dont believe that neither of these scenario’s could be true, and the bid must in fact have been real. KK would never lie to us fans like that, in fact he would want us on his side if he was to press money out of MA for transfers. Also the upstairs men couldnt tell KK such a big lie, allot of people are involved in transfers and there would be someone who had sympathy KK, and that would be the end of KK’s 2nd toon adventure… Furthermore if it was a hoax it has backfired completly since it started this rotten mood that allot of fans are in.

  • 43 Hadji // Jul 25, 2008 at 11:22

Geordie…..We’re not Sunderland and we’re definetly not Hull.
We have class players in our squad, the only problem is that is too small and is not gelled to perfection.
Hull must spend cos they cant depend on players such as Dean Windass and Nick Barmby.
We only need to offload Ameobi and get 4 senior squad players.

  • 44 hitman // Jul 25, 2008 at 11:26

hadji you missed the point where getting out spent by smaller clubs.

  • 45 sean667 // Jul 25, 2008 at 11:27

i feel we need to get used to the fact we do not have the pulling power we used to and despite competative bids and wages they are choosing to go elseware. While this is extremly disapointing it canall change IF the team start playing exciting football or challenging at the top of the table. I also believe the press and poor publicity has not helped by turning us into a bit of a laughing stock over the last few years.
Despite all this we must keep the faith and hope that things change for the better quickly.

  • 46 The Corner // Jul 25, 2008 at 11:27

Fair point about a Liverpool reserve, but at the same time, I never saw any articles linking us with him, Pompey were. Can you name the source where he was linked to us?

The board now seem to be able to keep a hat on who they are really interested in(Modric apart), yeah KK has stated that we have “missed out on one or two” but as long as people keep believing the shat that tomorrow’s chip wrappers print then they’ll keep on doing so.

    Figsdad?……do I know you?

I think you missed the point that we’re not desperate to spend as much as they do.
For sure if Newcastle just came back from the Championship division we would be spending massively.
We only need 1 CM-starter,1-CB-starter and
    1-LB-back up,1-DM-back up

  • 51 sean667 // Jul 25, 2008 at 11:34

We have class players and nobody can convince me the oposite, they just underperformed in the last 2 seasons.
Look Dickie,i would also like if we gonna spend 40-50 mill this summer but that obviously is not gonna happen so i always look at the bright side.
GET THE MAXIMUM OUT OF EVERYTHING.

  • 58 Capt Darlin // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:01

Why do you all think we re going to spend big etc etc. Its obvious that the days of spending 10m plus on a player at our club are long gone.
Poor signings last summer other than Beye, no signings in January when the squad was depleted and in need of new faces to lift the place. And so far a 2m Liverpool reserve and a free transfer. Thats the level that we are now pitching at, you need to stop kidding yourselves man….

  • 59 valle // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:27

4 good players for 20-24 million should be enough to get us a good season i think… A CB, LB, AM and DM imo… I cant see the urging need for a striker. If we play the ball on the ground then Owen and Martins could play together and then we have Viduka, Smith, Carroll and Ameobi also pressing for a starting place and whether or not you like Ameobi and Smith they will have to do till the more urgent positions have been filled, and who knows, perhaps KK’s magic will have them perform to make us eat our words.

  • 60 Bakerman // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:31

Hadji is right. The one thing this club needs more than anything is stability. No need to go out and buy a whole new sqaud. KK was getting it right at the back end of last season. We now need to consolidate, add a few more and hope for some improvement - not radical improvement. Look at how Everton got to where they are, not by making huge splashes in the market - but by gradually improving their squad. As a long-time supporter, I am remaining patient - hopeful in the sense that that the current board have a slow long-term growth plan for the club, not some gimmick to appease supporters.

  • 61 Jim // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:37

After reading some of the recent articles I get the impression that Wise et. al. were given KK’s list, took it away and went for them. It would seem that we agreed with clubs for the players and then the recruitment team squeezed the life out of each one with personal terms. Reyes seems to be the latest one. Because of that it looks as though Wise’s agenda is being pushed through with S. Americans on the cheap.

If I’m even close to the truth then KK must feel isolated and frustrated that the players coming in are other peoples signings and his job is ’simply’ to manage what he’s given.

    Any comments?

  • 62 valle // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:38

Jim… Could be, but its all speculation… If i know anything about KK, then he would get frustrated by that and spill over to the media.

  • 63 gorskino10 // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:39

oh my god, ok blaimimg other teams for slow Market well they haven’t look at the machams bidding for 4 players, what a load of crap kk is chatting about, just do ire job and buy as we need em badly after another rubbish year.

  • 64 Jim // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:46

    Valle…

I don’t think KK will be in such a hurry to air his grievances in the media after the storm in a teacup over his Champion League comment at the end of last season.

Over recent weeks he has kept very quiet on transfer news. I think that he’d go public only if he absolutely reached the end of his tether and that would put him publicly head to head with the board.

  • 65 Micky Toon // Jul 25, 2008 at 12:53

This is getting daft. Who gives a Kevin Carr about who Scumderland have signed. Do people really want us to sign dross just to prove that MA is backing Keegan and we have some new names on the books.
I just don’t understand why people would want that to happen. Just signing someone for the sake of it is wrong. And we wonder why the TOON fans get slagged in the press for being fickle and the most impatient fans in the league. Some posters to this blog are just giving ammo to the tabloids.
Look- MA isn’t the be all and end all, but I do have faith in him. KK isn’t, IMHO, a good manager and I feel we should have better, but I will back him. Bottom line is we don’t have any proof that MA and KK will do a good job this season, nor that they will do a bad job. The only time that will come is this time next year. If KK does the job then I will gladly shut up. If MA damages the club then I will shout for him to go the same as I did with fat fred.

Actually here’s something to talk about.
Those of you who don’t think MA is backing KK. Do you think it’s because he doesn’t rate KK? After all KK was second choice to ‘Appy ‘Arry.

  • 66 Jim // Jul 25, 2008 at 13:07

    Micky Toon…

I think you’re out of line. Fair enough if you don’t rate Keegan but I and so many others do. As for your comment about MA backing KK to sign dross, screw your head back on. KK has always had a tremendous eye for talented players, proving it during his last stint. That doesn’t sound like you’re getting behind Keagan at all.

You’re right that time will tell and I expect to have a pretty good idea by the end of the January window. As for Harry Redknap, I’m personally pleased we didn’t get the bent geezer. There’s enough Cockneys at the Toon already. I do wonder about MA and KK though, especially with Wise in the background signing a squad which will be ready in 3 years (just as KK’s contracts up).

  • 67 Paul141726 // Jul 25, 2008 at 13:17

I have thought Collocini would be a good signing for some time now. I don’t know if any of this is true, but as I have posted before this could help with our central defense. If he could team with Steven Taylor it would help Taylor develop his reading of the game and cut down on mistakes in the mental part of his game. Also, it could give Faye the chance to move into a defensive mid position, which I think would help the team, too.

  • 68 Taiwantoon // Jul 25, 2008 at 13:22

    @Micky Toon,

No offence, but I think KK is the best manager we could have for the moment. There may be better skilled managers out there but no current top managers would have joined a team that has just started its first team building process from youth players.

Signing a top manager is a lot harder than signing top players IMO(and we can’t not get near to any top players in the current climate). There are simply fewer top managers than top players.

  • 69 Micky Toon // Jul 25, 2008 at 13:35

Jim - I don’t doubt KK’s ability to spot talent, but I do doubt his ability to match guile and wits with managers like Fergie, Wenger, Big Phil and Maureen before him. Can you imagine the fun Maureen would have had winding Keegan up?
I will show all of my support for the club and that means I am willing to give Keegan a chance.
Don’t get me wrong, I also am happy that Redknapp didn’t join as manager.
As for my comment about Keegan signing dross. What I was getting at was that it seems to me that some people would be happy that we signed the next Frank Pingle because that shows we are signing players and therefore are going places.
I’d rather sign no one than sign someone who is overrated just to get some new faces in.

Tiwantoon - I agree. We are not seen as a top tier club anymore by anyone outside of this club.
It’s a shame that everything went so wrong after keegan left. Putting the Sir Bobby years aside we should have built on Keegans previous stint and we could now be sitting up there instead of Liverpool or Arsenal.

IF we did sign Colocini that would be terrific, though I would ease him in rather than have a “rabbit in headlights” start against Man U. Anyway, it’s still unlikely we’ll sign him!

  • 73 ANON // Jul 25, 2008 at 14:06

i have to say , i this transfer somehow transpires i’d pair him with faye and stick taylor on the bench.

  • 74 micepie // Jul 25, 2008 at 14:32

I can understand that many posts over the past few weeks point out we’re no longer an attractive proposition for many players because we’ve been mid-table or below the past few seasons. But I don’t feel that’s always relevant. Many of, for example, the kind of players that Arsenal (I know, I’m quoting Arsenal again!) signed in the past few years we’re not established and I bet would also have been happy to join a mid table Prem club. And there are many players out there, not yet “stars” or under the radar of the top 4 who would be equally excited to join us. That’s part of the challenge of putting together a great squad without being too obvious in who you choose to sign. I don’t go along with the opinion that we can’t sign excellent players because of the past few years.

Anyway, the phone is going too much at work – it’s got to the point where if I get interrupted by having to answer the phone when I’m on this site I have to hide my irritation!

    derdiyok is rubbish
    coloccini would be nice

and i here real madrid have bid 5.5m for van der vaart haha

although next year if he doesnt sign a new contract he can agree a 1.2m fixed fee move away

Colocini is too dear because he will cost more than £2M. Fulham have signed Johnson for £11m. We are spending less than the Championship clubs. Will somebody tell me what is going on? MA won’t and KK daren’t so I suppose we’ll just have to wait like mushrooms.

yeah true, though at 28 he still would have quite a few good years in him. wasnt aimar around the same age and we did try for him???
in terms of cost, i think somewhere around 5mill pounds perhaps? he spent most of last season on the bench and has stated that he wants to leave so i dont think they will be expecting too high a transfer.

Not sure if we had tried to sign Aimar, the club hadn’t and wouldn’t make any comments on these kinds of affairs…

  • 82 Piers // Jul 25, 2008 at 17:15

Exactly the type of player we need at this club….would be a terrific sign!

I’m getting tired of those rumours. I don’t get carried away anymore (like I did with Aimar). I will be happy if nufc.co.uk gives the news.

Coloccini would be a very good player for us. That’s all I’m going to say.

Jesus wept……why does everyone here lick up the bad taste that all the cynics and muppets of our media world leave hanging around the street corners when they know nothing at all!!

I really enjoy coming to this site and reading the articles, even if some of them turn out to be balloney, and I used to enjoy reading the comments…now the comments just depress me. Most of the slagging is completly unfounded. What happened to belief and eternal optimism :)

we cant afford Coloccini .MA wants to take us to championship & win it,he wants to win something atleast.

This guy fits the bill of what we need, but it’s just all conjecture. Simply recycled speculation because they’ve run out of names to pluck out the air.

I’ve decided I’m not going to judge until the season starts.
