Kieron Dyer is not unaccustomed to playing right back.
He made his debut in 1999 for England against Luxembourg in that position – and set up a goal in the first half for Alan Shearer in that game – after moving at speed down the right wing and laying one on for Alan. He has also played that position many time when at Ipswich Town.
Kieron Dyer
Luke Edwards is reporting in the Journal today that Allardyce has already talked to Dyer about playing right back next season for Newcastle – so we’ll take our own look at the possibility.
With Dyer’s previous experience taken into account it’s not altogether surprising to hear that Steve McClaren will play him in that position for England against Estonia today.
Certainly when we have seen Kieron at right back he has looked accomplished – because he has the skill and positional play to make it all look very easy. Add to that Dyer’s pace to scream down the wing and the fact that England are in need of a right back shortly – to take over from Gary Neville – then from Dyer’s perspective that may not be a bad move. For both his Newcastle and England careers it may be an excellent move for him and if he has a good game today for England – that will only harden Allardyce’s thinking on this.
Dyer has never really had a set position at Newcastle and we think this would help Kieron settle more – if he held a regular position each week. Dyer can always be used in an emergency – in other positions by Sam as events warrant.
If Sam wants to use him in that position and Dyer objects we think he will be out the door – probably to Tottenham or even Chelsea – so it’s a win for the club whichever way it goes. But the news seeping through is that Kieron was at least open to the idea when Big Sam met with Dyer and Owen at the England B training camp a week or so back.
If Sam is going to play Dyer at right back there are some things a little puzzling. We already have Nobby Solano – playing very well in that position last season and who has signed for another year for us. We are also reported to be after Toulouse right back Albin Ebondo.
Stephen Carr – Moving On ?
Whatever happens with this situation it does not look good for Stephen Carr – three right backs is a little overkill – and maybe once Sam is satisfied with the skillful Solano and Dyer – he will let Stephen Carr move on. So we are now convinced there are many possibilities at right back for us next season.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Dyer as an emergency right-back would be acceptable, but that’s about it. We still need to bring in an experienced full back who can defend properly. Although, Kieron would be able to keep up with the likes of Robben and Ronaldo, I think defensivley he would be a little misplaced and afraid to get stuck in. Personally, I’d like to see Luke Young or Michel Salgado.

Comment #3We certainly won’t miss Carr. I have to say however that I’d rather start next season with a recognised right-back as neither Solano or Dyer are too hot defensively. Both players are capable of maximising the effect of attacking down the right wing but there were a few moments last season where Nobby was exposed in defence which caused us one or two problems, and when was the last time you saw Dyer put a tackle in? All well and good if we’re going back to tactics of ‘scoring more than them’ but I doubt it will work tbh.

Comment #4I think you’ve got a little confused. No way in the world will Dyer be played at right back. He can’t tackle, Allardyce won’t want that. Think you’ve got a bit carried away with the rumour that he’s gonna play right back for England- even if this is the case (which i don’t think it is) its only because Estonia are pants and offer no attacking threat.
Allardyce will sign a right back or start with Nobby.

Comment #5In my opinion it would be a good move to convert Dyer (for both NUFC and Dyer himself) to RWB/RB. I also agree with the OP that it’s likely Dyer will be sold if he doesn’t want to play RWB/RB (not a bad move for NUFC either). All in all it feels like a win-win situation.

Comment #6Andy – it’s not the first time I’ve been accused of being confused or even carried away. 😀
Still think Dyer is a good right back – when he’s played there – but if he’s not going to be used as a right back and the story turns out to be untrue – we should sell him and get the 10M – which would be a good deal for us – we’ll have to wait and see.

Comment #8Dyer has played at right back for the toon before. A couple of games under Gullet and also a couple under Robson. Having said that, I would prefer some hard ar*ed take no nonesnse tackler there.
If we’re looking at alternatives at right back within the current squad, there’s also Stephen Taylor, though then we’re not looking at somebody who can tank up and down the wing when needed.
All we need is a right footer with Stephen Taylor’s physique, Nobby’s ball control, Kieron Dyer’s speed, Jon Beresford’s attitude and Jon Anderson’s tackling (remember him?)
All applications, ideally by next week to Sam Allardyce, St James’s Park etc…..

Comment #9Dyer should be sold……..he isnt good enough to warrant wearing the shirt….he’s had enough chances,He’s either injured or in a huff cos he’s not playing where he wants to….Or cos one of his mates is getting blamed for bad displays…Little tosser should go now..Overated dwarf.

Comment #10The RB position is Solano’s after the amazing job he did there last season. He has great vision and set up a some amazing openings from our own half, something which none of our back four have done in years. Dyer is too soft to be a defender and after his injury record i doubt he will be jumping in for a tackle. I would leave Solano there and try and go for Michel Salgado ( or someone similar perhaps Miguel ) as he is nearing the end of a long successful time in Real Madrid and would be up for a new challenge. Dyer could be a super sub for us as he brings a different approach to our game.

Comment #13sorry Kieran but i completely disagree with you on the fact that Dyer is a Central mid player. CM muct be:
1. commited
2. strong
that is about it, with these basic elements you hav decent foundations for a centre mid player.
dyer has none of these, he jumps out of the way of challenges- he is a spineless coward in my opinion.
in CM ther will b a lot of 50/50 tackles with opponent CM, can you imagine how dyer would perform when playing against Gerrard, even Nolan, Speed, Campo (mojority from Sam’s bolton team) in which he knows that to compete in a football match you CM area muct be strong to overpower the opponents CM area. there is only 1 way in which all NEWC fans should be happy to see Dyer in CM……..playing for the opponent there!!!

Comment #14sorry kieran, but i do agree with your ‘Dyer playing RB… no way’, still need the basic elements to be successful in these types of positions
