Edmilson First Newcastle Signing in January

November 13th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 68 Comments

We expect one of the new arrivals in January to Newcastle to be Edmilson, the Brazilian International, who has said for many months now that when his contract expires in June he will not be signing a new contract at Barcelona.

The Brazilian international center-back or defensive midfielder moved to Barcelona in 2004, and helped the Spanish giants to UEFA Champions League glory in 2006. We wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Edmilson arrives on Tyneside in early January.

edmilson_459402.jpg

Edmilson - admired for a long time by Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce

However, Edmilson has been troubled by an injury to his right knee since last Spring, which probably stopped Big Sam making a move for him in the summer transfer window, when he traveled to Barcelona to discuss a move with both Edmilson and his wife.

It was expected it would take until November for the 42 times capped Brazilian to get fully fit again, so he’s probably approaching full fitness now. It seems a good time for Big Sam and Chairman Mort to check back with the Brazilian International and his club, Barcelona.

The 31-year-old, who has been played 79 times for Barcelona, has also been targeted by AC Milan. But we wouldn’t be surprised if Sam has already made some kind of provisional deal with Barcelona and Edmilson. However, our current league position may be a little worrying. We had hoped we would have been higher in the league by now, and any drop before the end of the year, could potentially jeopardize a deal.

With all the defenders we’ve brought in, we also thought that maybe we didn’t need Edmilson, but the performances of the last few games has proved that we need as much class, at the back, as we can get. Edmilson certainly has that class, plus loads of experience at the very top level. He turned 31 last July and stands 6′1″ tall.

Edmilson is a perfect player for Big Sam, since he has resurrected many careers during his time at Bolton. We’ll soon start looking seriously at who Newcastle may bring in during January, but don’t be surprised if Edmilson arrives at Newcastle early in January. We think Sam should also be able to get a good deal for the Brazilian, with just a little over 6 months of his contract left at Barcelona.

What do you think? Is Edmilson the type of player we need? We think so, but let’s hear what you think.

Comments are always very welcome.

Edmilson would be a good one for us to sign. But we really need a creative midfielder. I hope that remains top priority in January.

  • 2 Jerry // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:17

And we think its a given that Edmilson would want to join us???

  • 3 Kash // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:21

I think our Defensive midfield position is definitely our top priority. We had smudge breaking up play and then giving the ball back to the mackems. We sorely missed Butt, thats why its vital us signing Edmilson. “Break oppositions attack and counter”, something Butt does well and i’ve seen Edmilson do for both Brazil and Barca (Marquez is even better at this). Don’t think AC Milan will go for him considering they signed Emerson plus all the controversy in Italy is a turn off. Creative midfield player should be looket at after Edmilson has given us the word so that we can find a complimenting playmaker!

  • 4 Hadrain // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:23

no thanks , as far as im concerned sam has already done his wheeling and dealing, its time to spend .
lets face it , he’s had all these players targeted for bolton. what bolton brings in is not what we should be aiming for , sam’s moved to newcastle so he would have a club with the reasources behind him to push it up a notch .
we cant aspire tobe among the best and keep on bringing in players ‘the best’ are wanting shot of , beside’s signings of age 30+ just dont float my boat .
Edmilson may come on a free , but his wage’s wont be cheap . we could probaly fork out millions on a good youngster and it still work out the same price when you take in a contracts worth of wages , and the young un wouldnt be close to cashing his pension when said contract was over .
this season in a loss , whatever hype we all bought into at the start of season , we accepted then that this was building time and despite a few moans here and there and what the press would lead you to belive, we ALL still know this is building time , lets target next season , bring in youngsters and work them into the team in the remainder of this season , as long as it looks like progress is being made any league position is fine .
i think this is what sam isnt getting , we all know its building time , the deafeats are only taken so badly cos we look like shite while losing , if we looked good and lost most of us couldnt give a monkeys , cos we know its building time !

  • 5 ToonKing // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:30

Edmilson, Darijo Srna, Arshavin, Laursen or Ben Haim and Dean Ashton and were set. ;)

  • 6 Hadji // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:41

Instead Dean Ashton i would prefer Luis Fabiano all the rest is good choice.

  • 7 Paul // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:41

not likely my friend. you must be american burger head.

  • 8 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:50

All the players we have been linked with since the end of the transfer window:

Jozy Altidore (New York Red Bulls)
    Oscar Cardozo (SL Benfica)
    Urby Emmanuelson (AFC Ajax)
    Loic Remy (Olympique Lyonnais)
    Etienne Capoue (Toulouse)
Wesley Ngo Baheng (Le Havre AC)
    Krzysztof Krol (Real Madrid Castilla)
    Kyle Lafferty (Burnley FC)
    Eddie Johnson (Kansas City Wizards)
    Gretar Steinsson (AZ Alkmaar)
    Ivica Dragutinovic (Sevilla)
    Andrei Arshavin (FC Zenit)
    Juan Roman Riquelme (Villareal CF)
    Espen Hojmark (Aarhus)
    Jussi Jaskelainen (Bolton)
    Peter Crouch (Liverpool)
    Deco (Barcelona)
    Edmilson (Barcelona)
    Eidur Gudjohnsen (Barcelona)
    Alan Hutton (Rangers)
    Brede Hangeland (FC Copenhagen)
    Emile Heskey (Wigan)
    Nuri Sahin (Dortmund/Feyenoord)
    Even Hovland (Sogndal)
    Per Egil Flo (Sogndal)

Of those id only bite you hand off for Arshavin, Sahin, Altidore, Hutton, Emmanuelson or Cardozo, maybe Edmilson at a push.

  • 9 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 18:53

    And deco and Gudjohnsen etc

But out of those names listed that could come into our first time id only look into Sahin, Arshavin, Emmanuelson, Hutton, Cardozo, Altidore, Edmilson

  • 10 yet_another_indian_toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 19:02

Damn, we haven’t even been linked with Huntelaar!

  • 11 J-TOON-OH // Nov 13, 2007 at 19:25

Yeah Huntelaar is on fire at the minute for Ajax. Theres a rumour he’s got a pre-contract agreement with Juventus but if EMO was to go to Citeh, he’d be an top (if costly) replacement. Love the guy, wached him for a while now, could Sam sell him on the toon, hmm not sure. Scored a crackin goal against us at SJP when he played for Heerenveen.

  • 12 Espen // Nov 13, 2007 at 19:43

Edmilson in, Butt out! And bring in a striker, let Owen go and play Martins! We need players who want to play for the club, not like Owen who’s focusing more on England.

  • 13 yet_another_indian_toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 20:05

Geremi vs Butt, which one will you pick as a holding midfielder?

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 20:41

    Niether, id pick Joey Barton

  • 15 Tripp // Nov 13, 2007 at 21:04

“not likely my friend. you must be american burger head.”

WTF is that supposed to mean?

Hadrian, I think to get the prime young talent, we’ve got to build a better name for ourselves. Older, experienced players can help us build that reputation (though, at the moment they’re not doing that for us too well).

  • 16 iain // Nov 13, 2007 at 21:29

cacapa is cool calm and collected and experienced, but even the pl has shown how it can cares not for reputations when it comes to pace and power and thosoe are two aspects greatly lacking from edmilsons game these days, granted hes a good passer and reads the game well, but weve been shown all season how geremi/butts lack of pace has left us exposed and sams solution is to buy a player just as old and just as slow and less physical than geremi and butt ?

    no thanks.

try floging emre to fenerbache and part exchange for appiah, whether emre would go for fener being a galatasary lad i dont know, but appiah is about the only expereienced big physcial quick good passing defensive mf player the right side of 30 left not at a big club in a major league.

if its good enough for barca to buy yaya toure for his pace/power then its good enough for us i reckon.

another advantage of appiah he already speaks english and should fit in great with the other african lads.

  • 17 Cockney Magpie // Nov 13, 2007 at 21:52

i definatly agree with tryin to get Dean Ashton i think he is most Shearer type player around at the moment and if not then lets get Heskey to partner Owen! and Edmilson is a must if he still wants to join us!

  • 18 Cockney Magpie // Nov 13, 2007 at 21:56

and as for the creative midfielder i think we should get Rochemback from middlesbrough or Daniel De Ridder from Birmingham both players play some amazing football but 9 times out of 10 their team mates they have got around them are not on the same wave length!

  • 19 Cockney Magpie // Nov 13, 2007 at 21:58

i think with players such as Barton, Duff, N’zog, Owen, Martins etc Rochemback or De Ridder would be perfect for the creative midfielder gap we have in our squad! in fact why not get both!!

  • 20 Cockney Magpie // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:00

and both quite young aswel. Rochemback 26, De Ridder 21 (i think)

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:06

De Ridder is 23 and i rather have Bouazza than any of them even though hes not a playmaker.

  • 22 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:07

Sahin and Arshavin would be my choices for creativity, arshavin will probably play RW not worries there, he is brilliant in that position.

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:11

Oh and this whole deal with Martins apprently he had bad flu the whole week before the game.

  • 24 Cockney Magpie // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:11

ive got myself excited now at the thought of signing rochemback! lol i wish i had BSA’s mobile number, i wonder if Rochemback has ever crossed his mind? hmmm?

  • 25 Cockney Magpie // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:12

i have not heard of arshavin tom_toon who does he play for?

  • 26 Tom_Toon // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:19

Zenit and soon us hopefully, he said he was looking to move abroad once zenit have won the russian championship and they did that on sunday.

  • 27 iain // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:25

i think we all agree we need a target man as cover for or for 1st choice ahead of viduka. smith/ameobi not good enough.

imo id be happier with a fitter quicker cf like anelka then owen, anelka may be grumpy and tempremental but the way owens body language is these days i doubt there would be much difference anelka would probably be cheaper in wages even 90kpw would free up enough for what owens on to give stevie t the pay rise he’s after.

mf i the area that needs most work imo, we need a quick, strong dfm who can pass (appiah, poulsen, keita, kovac) and either a hard working goal scoring cm like cahill, or a creative wide/cm player like arteta/arshavin. no luxury players like riquelme unless sam decides full time we are playing 433, or possibily all 3.

defence is fine imo selection wise bar fb cover, with enrique looking like our most settled/consistent player this season a young fb wold have to be really young to be patient cover for him, the polish lad krol makes most sense.
as for rb either get an attacking one like nelson (who could play rw as well) or a defensive one that long term could be another ch for when cacapa is past it like ujfalusi.

imo the least outlay is on

arteta wing + acm - emre out
nelson rb + rw - carr out
    radoslav kovac dfcm/ch
    krol -lb - baba out
anelka - owen+shola out bring carrol through as 4th cf.

those 5 players would provide choice in all the positions we need imo. for 5 out and 5 in thats a good solution.

  • 28 Halliday // Nov 13, 2007 at 22:54

I would have him. He is a good composed player. A bit like Rozehnal.

I think its attacking flair we are crying out for though. Barton doesn’t seem like he is going to give it, Brilliant in the tackle but not much more.
Emre has the qualitys, Maybe If Sam played two wingers, N’zogbia, Milner either sides. Then Emre in the middle. Would make sense. Butt is a must starter in my eyes. He’s just brilliant. Smith, Barton, Geremi.. All good players. But aren’t peforming. Am not sure.

Get Berbatov in. I reckon. Or Ashton. That type of player. Because of how much Viduka is injured. As great as the big lad is. He has only a few years left. And it will probably injury hit the whole time. We look lost without him. Berbatov and Ashton would fill that gap, Maybe even be a quality partnership. Martins needs to play more, He is our main man.

  • 29 Hammy // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:03

Anybody else notice we are pretty shit Aerial wise at the back and I’m not talking washing powder here……a lot of teams are hoofing the ball up high against us as we seem to win very little first time along the defensive line.
If this Edmilson can head a ball and organise he would be useful but how many centrehalfs do we need?
Our Geordie greek god Dabizas had his moments but he didn’t lose much in the air. Ah well….think I’ll have a glass of red…..toodle pip.

  • 30 joshi // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:07

yer a bit of a rethink up front with a new target man would be good, and a strong, quick, skillfull, creative cm who can also track back would be excellent.

  • 31 Hammy // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:09

What is the average age of our squad? anybody know……

  • 32 Leo // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:10

i wouldnt care if we had 8 different Center Backs, as long as our defence improves

  • 33 iain // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:16

our defence wont improve until our mf does imo.

  • 34 Leo // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:19

iain your right, both your comments ive really agreed with, well written also.

people keep saying our defence have not improved at all, but it is the midfield that is our current problem, with them constantly giving the ball away, puts massive pressure on the defence. no matter how good they are goals will flow against us

  • 35 Chris W. // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:32

Arshavin would be great — fast, creative, and I think still developing.

  • 36 joshi // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:38

just watchin some vids on arshavin…. he looks shit hot! where is his best position?

  • 37 Bill f // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:39

Hammy is right we are shit in the air and always have been, well in recent years anyway. Oh for a McGrath, Moncur or even a Stokoe. I reckon our biggest priority is a good defensive coach.
How about Beattie as a forward he playing well now and would probably love to follow in Shearers footsteps.

  • 38 joshi // Nov 13, 2007 at 23:57

wooaaahh, moved onto a vid on emre, pure class!!! when we played against chelsea last season…. he was brilliant.

  • 39 Cockney Magpie // Nov 14, 2007 at 0:35

Iain and Leo, totally agree with u both that with a midfield that gives the ball away so often any defence would look bad.

  • 40 Matt // Nov 14, 2007 at 0:35

Tom Toon… im with you on Sahin.. he is a gun waiting to go off

  • 41 Cockney Magpie // Nov 14, 2007 at 0:40

still to this day i dont know what we was thinking selling scotty parker he was fantastic for us last season a complete rock in the midfield and never stopped working from start til finish, i will never forget that game against Arsenal when we won 1-0 with a nobby solano goal and Scott Parker was getting beaten into the ground and jus kept getting back up over and over again to win more n more tackles Arsenal had to literally knock him out in the end and he had to be subbed and even then he was tryin to get back on his feet to play on, I had never been so proud to be a Newcastle fan that day!.

  • 42 papscrunt // Nov 14, 2007 at 1:08

We all know we need someone with abit of creative flair its what we up here love. Someone who excites and can become a cult hero. But what is the point of getting a creative midfielder when BSA’s tactics bypass our midfeild alltogether? I think he’ll be at the worlds strongest man scouting players cuz if your not 10 foot tall and at least 14stone of pure muscle you’ll not get signed by him!

  • 43 PK-Norway // Nov 14, 2007 at 1:30

1.Edmilson wont get us better..and i doubt it will be with the style we play with..
2.Barton is back as the same old..matter of time before he will kick a team mates ass..

  • 44 PK-Norway // Nov 14, 2007 at 1:31

ment i doubt we will get better with any players with the style we play..

  • 45 vincent // Nov 14, 2007 at 2:15

ive seen some matches of edmilson playing, he can hit long ball nicely as what pirlo doing for ac milan.. that would suit BS’s tactic.. but is that what all magpies would want to see? ball flying all over the pitch producing more goalkicks and offsides lol..

but imo, he is much better than butt or geremi as holding midfield surely

and if im not mistaken he is in one of the world cup winner first team squad

  • 46 Len // Nov 14, 2007 at 2:36

Before I spent a fortune on high risk buys I would see how we could make better use of what we have. You want a creative midfielder? How about Zoggy, he was brilliant there in the warm up matches. You want a big centre forward, step up Carroll. I would like to us make better use of what we have before buying even more players we dont know what to do with.

  • 47 Len // Nov 14, 2007 at 2:55

For me ins and outs minimal. Nobody with any ambition will join a club treading water in bottom half of the table. If we can make Euro Vase next year I would go for Eidur Gudjohnsen in the summer. I would try and trade Ameobi plus cash for Anelka in January. And look for a couple of FB’s as they come available. Edmilson? Riquelme? Cacapa already showed us how the EPL treads experienced players who have lost pace and strength. It dumps them on their arse and runs off and scores.

  • 48 joe // Nov 14, 2007 at 3:21

Imo edmilson would be an ideal choice to partner barton in midfield. Barton’s damn good at driving forward but isnt all that creative. He needs a creative defensive midfielder to cover for him, sth like a mascherano/alonso for a gerrard.

  • 49 Brisbane Mag // Nov 14, 2007 at 4:06

Edmilson is injury prone and will cost a fortune in salary. Suggest we forget him and go for Ben Haim of Chelsea….

I like Dean Ashton, but another player who is injured too frequently.

If we release Carr, Babayaro, Pattison, Ameobi and possibly Emre in January we need to bring in top class replacements who’ll improve the current team immediately and not just squad players; i.e. Andrei Arshavin as a starter….

  • 50 G. // Nov 14, 2007 at 5:39

what about Colocini, does he still play at Deportivo?
He should be a good EPL cb imo

could be costly though, but id prefer spending cash on a decent cb rathar than taking in new uncertainties

  • 51 Aussie Geordie // Nov 14, 2007 at 7:53

Andrei Arshavin. Dont care how he plays the man has the name of a future legend! How can you not cheer the fella on.

    I’d like to see

    Beye…..Capaca….Roz……Enrique
    Milner….Butt…Emre…..Zogbia
    ………Martins…………..Viduka

    Taylor, Emre, Barton, Owen

I’d like to see Zog and Enrique linking up better. Emre for the free kicks and the pinpoint pass, Butt because he has shown he can still break up play he just needs to pass the ball to the closest player and not go on the attack. Milners work rate is spot on and his confidence will grow with that goal. Martins deserves a shot over Owen at this point. I see no point in having Smith in the team unless injuries hit.

  • 52 Cyprus Toon // Nov 14, 2007 at 8:37

The reason our midfield are always losing the ball is because they are all short-arses, Milner, Barton, Butt, Zog, Emre, etc not one of them is over 6ft, so if we’re gonna get someone in, we should make sure there above 6ft, that why Pompy beat us, all their players are giants compared to ours!
We also should be looking at players between the ages of 21-28 if possible, someone with experience but not to old & slow to be a waste of money, Gudjohnson, Ben-Hiem, Ashton etc were gonna lose at least 4-7 players due to teh African cup & injuries, so need to bring in just as many, we must have one of the smallest, if not weakest squads in the Prem & hopefully with Mike Ashley being in the crowd, he will understand how the fans feel & see we need to spend some real money, not stupid money but real money of quality players in January.
BTW, I love the fact our new owner gets amongst the crowds & isn’t bothered about showing off what his wealth as paid for, gud on yer Mike!

  • 53 Tom from Aus // Nov 14, 2007 at 8:49

i believe another good and YOUNG brazilian would be cm + acm is lulinha. good player

  • 54 S // Nov 14, 2007 at 9:33

Just what we need another injury prone player.

  • 55 sirjasontoon // Nov 14, 2007 at 10:02

I think these old players on frees and stuff is just taking the P@@@ out of the fans paying top dollars to watch dross.
The fans don’t want golden oldies we are not Bolton we are Newcastle United !
We need more players that are of the calibre of owen and martins (WORLD CLASS) not over the hill prima donnas on a final salary pension,if he is building for the future we should be scouring the planet for some talented hungry youth before we end up like an old peoples home.
I get the impression this manager has not got the talent to manage top players at the highest level..his bag is squeezing the last bit of juice out of players that are well and truly over the hill.
I bet he signs Gary Speed and Heskey in the winter window..zzzzzzzzzz it is going to be a very long season at this rate.

  • 56 Craig Allen // Nov 14, 2007 at 10:12

Agree Len. I’d like to see Zog tried out in the middle for more than one match to give a better indication of promise or not. Wish Sam would try him out there but i doubt that he will - probably see him at LB more than anywhere else this season it seems.

  • 57 Marko // Nov 14, 2007 at 10:15

Dont need him, as has been said above a creative midfielder is the kind of player we want, remember when Deco was linked, that was a good rumour! :D

  • 58 Will // Nov 14, 2007 at 11:38

Cockney Magpie agree fully with your comments about Parker. That Arsenal games was one of the best performances Roeder mustered and Parker was class. I think we are missing him and I hate to say it but Dyer as well.

Finger crossed we get this Arseshaver in seen him a couple of times and he looked quality.

  • 59 jiM Baker // Nov 14, 2007 at 12:52

Personally this possible signing doesn’t excite me, something which is becoming more and more common with Newcastle signings.
Back in the day we would sign the likes of Ginola, Tino, Ferdinand and the list could go on. these signings got you totally excited and you couldn’t wait to see them pull on the black and white top…but sadly this ageing Brazillian injury prone bloke just doesn’t float my boat. (i hope i’m wrong though, i hope if he comes he’s flippin fantasic)
I don’t see the point of Smith?
i don’t understand why Big Sam refuses to play our two wingers in their correct positions.
If Bartons not fit then why start him…he looks shocking at the min.
    Emre’s class!
    Owen…????
We are crying out for a crative midfielder! Ashley get the cheque book out.
    and a real striker.
What we need is sime crazy scientist to make us another Pedro, oh and while you’re at it mate knock us up another Shearer.
And i too agree with Cockney Magpie Parker was mint, and that game was tremendous, Nobby bought me my mate and some lasses bottles of wine in the Cooperage the Tuesday after taht game….legend!
Parkers much better than Smith, Butt and Gerimi.
And just to throw this in. Pedolski and Klose from the german team!

  • 60 nightfall // Nov 14, 2007 at 13:33

i’d like to see (when all fit)

    given
    beye rozehnal faye enrique

    martins berbatov :)

Just as a matter of interest where do the players signed, rank in Football Manager?

  • 64 aaron d // Nov 14, 2007 at 15:32

Habib Beye - is pretty shit in the current game i’m playing

Faye - Is pretty good, a few player of the month awards

Alan Smith - not too great average ratings of 6.67 and 3 goals in first season

Mark Viduka - Never gets in the team.

Rozenhal - an average player in the game

Cacapa - gets in the 1st eleven, and played ok so far.

Geremi - average soom good games

Joey Barton - is the best of the lot of them.

Three Seasons in and out of all the above only Faye and Barton are still at the club. I know its only a game, but some of the researchers have now been employed as scouts at football clubs. I found out about players that i had ever heard of on this game and now they are superstars Ronaldinho, Saviola, Aimar for example.

So on that basis we have a pretty average squad, which aint far out.

We have good enough players, but none of them can seem to pass the ball a long the deck. This has got to be down to the coaching, training methods and the managers preferences to where he wants his players to play.

At the mo they have no cohesion at all - its just get the ball and hook it up field as far as possible. Personally, one player who i would replace would be michael owen - i think someone at the start of this thread mentioned something about not wanting, “overpaid prima donnas”. Ya right! we need them out!!! sign kanoute, gudjohnson or anelka.

i think edmilson would be great i still think also need a rb cb creatine mid playet and a target man though. rb alan hutton would be perfect create competition for beye/cb possibly ben haim or a a world class cb like hetinga or barzagli creative mid- Andrei Arshavin would be quality/target man- i think cardoza the kid from benfica would be good hes 6.5foot and good with his feet or someone like adriano i would love he would be perfect but theres not much chance of that happening.
