Mike Ashley To Join Newcastle Fans

November 9th, 2007 · 32 Comments

Well we did have an article earlier in the week asking why it was so bad that Mike Ashley wear his Newcastle shirt in the Director’s box at Sunderland on Saturday.

But it turns out that Mike has solved the problem himself, in a really creative way.

Mike says he so wants to wear the Newcastle strip for the game, that he will sit with the Newcastle fans in the away end of the Stadium of Light.

What a great gesture by Newcastle’s owner!

Mike Ashley will join ranks with the Newcastle supporters on Saturday as he is determined to wear his black and white colors to watch the big Tyne-Wear derby from the away end at the Stadium of Light.

Mike of course has been seen wearing his Newcastle shirt in the directors’ box at the majority of Newcastle’s matches so far this season, having taken control of the club during the summer. However, Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has stated this week that it was against club policy for away team’s colors to be worn in executive areas, Newcastle Chairman Chris Mort has today confirmed that Mike will join the Newcastle fans to cheer on Newcastle at tomorrow’s game:

Chris Mort said this morning:

“Niall Quinn and I have had some very constructive conversations on this topic,”

“He understands Mike wants to wear his shirt for this game more than any other, but at the same time Mike doesn’t want to cause anyone at Sunderland any problems by doing so.”

“Mike has decided to watch the game in with our fans behind the goal, and he is very much looking forward to doing so.”

Well, we’re sure the cameras will be focusing in on wherever Mike is situated tomorrow afternoon. That’s a great way to settle the argument of Mike wearing the famous black and white colors of Newcastle – well done Mike – and we hope you’ll be able to celebrate a victory – it’s been a long time since you last did that on the night of our Tottenham victory.

Hey, wonder is he knows the words to the Blaydon races, he will after the game. :D

Comments welcome.

I also hope this is not just a baby kissing exercise.

Talk about a chairman endearing himself to the fans. No wonder he’s done so well in business. Even if it all goes pear shaped at the game I hope he gets to experience the positive side of the toon supporters instaed of all the knee jerk negativity. Hopefully Sam will play Zog left and Milner right. Man for man we are better than them so who cares if it’s away.

  • 16 indian toon // Nov 9, 2007 at 13:50

i will hav mort on the back.. man he looKs like a nerd..damn..!!

  • 18 Mart // Nov 9, 2007 at 13:53

Excellent gesture - how many chairmen have ever done that I wonder ?
Let’s hope he brings us luck.

  • 19 Ross // Nov 9, 2007 at 14:14

brilliant idea, excellent gesture to the fans. shows he wants to wear the shirt, he wants to get involved. i’ve never heard of any other chairman do anything close to this, and i think its quality of him to do so.
pogo if you love big mike in the toon end tomorrow? ha.

  • 20 wsq // Nov 9, 2007 at 14:14

Doesn’t he get cold? with just that jersey on! he has a lot of blubber i guess.

  • 21 yet_another_indian_toon // Nov 9, 2007 at 14:44

Keep all Big-Sam-haters away from him!!!!

Dont want him to be brainwashed, do we?

(p.s. I dont dislike Big Sam, I dont like him either…)

  • 22 indian toon // Nov 9, 2007 at 14:49

the fans will decide on that at the end of the match..lol

  • 23 Bill f // Nov 9, 2007 at 14:55

LOL Obafan2. He will get his ear well and truly bent I bet, hope he is not adverse to strong language.

  • 24 ToonKing // Nov 9, 2007 at 14:56

  • 30 Toon Al // Nov 9, 2007 at 16:18

    Ashley = legend

sittin with the fans to wear his shirt.. wat a legend

  • 31 Leo // Nov 9, 2007 at 16:32

what a bloke, i guess he didnt get the chance to sit and watch football when he was younger, as he was out making his billions, he is reliving his childhood.

    good on ya ashley.

  • 32 Sparkey // Nov 10, 2007 at 5:34

Ashley is tops for sitting with the fans. The only other time i can remember that type of thing happening was when Gretna’s owner sat with their fans during the cup final against Hearts.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
