Newcastle need Quality Defenders in the Summer - not Forwards

April 23rd, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

There are several reports in the newspapers that Newcastle will be after strikers in the summer. One report in the News of the World says that Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United are eyeing Southampton striker Marek Saganowski. Marek Saganowski (born October 31, 1978 in Łódź) is a Polish footballer who is at Southampton on loan from Troyes AC. The last thing Newcastle need in the summer is another striker – we will do very well next season with Michael Owen, Obefemi Martins, Shola Ameobi, Andy Carroll and Antoine Sibierski. If we can get Steven Sidwell from Reading on a free transfer and keep all the midfielders and forwards we already have (including Charles N’Zogbia) then three class defenders is about all we need to have a team that will make the top six. That assumes that Oguchi Onyewu, Moore and Bramble are on their way out of the club – although Onyewu the American has looked safe and solid when in the team and I personally would like to see him stay at the club because he seems to have so much potential. Defenders have to be the target in the summer and Roeder certainly seems to know that – we’ll just have to see who he goes after - but quality is a must.

Think Newcastle need someone like Petter Hansson. Need someone to drive the defense in the middle with a strong fighting spirit and a strong will to win a match. Someone consistent. Heard rumors that Glasgow Rangers is tracking him for a summer swoop as he refused to sign a new contract with Heerenveen and should be a free agent.

Mats - Wikipedia says Glasgow Rangers are tracking him - looks like he’s 30 years old - think Roeder wants younger palyers - the two that keep cropping up are Anton Ferdinand and Curtis Davis - but the Argentinian Fabricio Coloccini - who is 25 has also been mentioned. He looked good during the world cup last year.

    Ed, I wouldn’t trust wikipedia much :)

please don’t go on world cup form.

If Mats is saying what I think he’s saying (that Newcastle need a hard man in defence), I don’t think Ferdinand fits the bill.

You need a player like Vidic :)

    Ahmed,

Agree with you. My point with Hansson was just an example… Need someone to push the rest of the team from behind.

The center backs we keep hearing about - from Roeder - aren’t the types that will boss the defense - agree we need someone like that. The current lot don’t talk much - apart from Taylor.
It’s a mystery which center backs will be at Newcastle next season.

Ahmed - good idea on Vidic. How about a straight swap for Bramble?
