Newcastle After 21 year-old Dutchman

October 19th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 29 Comments

Ajax Amsterdam defender Urby Emanuelson is said to be attracting the attention of Premiership duo Aston Villa and Newcastle United. The Dutchman has also been interesting Roma.

Emanuelson is a 21 year-old left back and has already expressed his desire to leave Ajax in the January transfer window.

Urby Emanuelson - looks an emerging star of the future

He looks like a top class player but he’s a left back, so we’ll see if he comes in January. As you recall we were already linked recently with Real Madrid’s 20 year-old left back Krzysztof Krol.

Italian side Roma recently expressed an interest in the player, but they are only the third of clubs already interested in the youngster.

Urby Emanuelson was born in June, 1986 in Amsterdam and is a Surinamese-Dutch footballer. He can play left back but can also play as a left midfielder. Emanuelson has come through Ajax’s youth system, joining them from Voorland SC. He appeared in Ajax’ first team squad for the 2004-05 season and made his debut on April 10, 2005. In the 2005-06 season he became a first team regular and won the 2005 Johan Cruijff-schaal and the 2006 KNVB Cup.

He was a member of the Dutch squad that won the UEFA U-21 Championship in 2006, who beat England in that terrific game that went to penalties in the semi-final. Urby was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament as a left back. He stands nearly 5′10″ tall.

In August of 2006 he made his debut for the Dutch national team in a friendly match against Ireland. As a result of his efforts he was named “Amsterdam talent of the year 2006″.

This boy looks good, and we think it’s great Newcastle are being linked with these top youngsters. This is a new strategy expressed by chairman Chris Mort - to bring in top class youngsters from across the world, before they have fully reached their potential. If things go well we’d expect Newcastle to bring in 3-4 excellent youngsters in January. We’ve already made a deal for the Le Havre youngster - 18 year-old French striker Wesley Baheng.

Comments always welcome.

anything on his height..!? as sam prefers tall players..

  • 2 Ed Harrison // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:05

5′ 9.5″ - just put it in article.

  • 3 michael // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:09

Why don’t we sign him but ask Ajax to keep him til he’s 20 so that he won’t be a muppet trained by the awful Newcastle academy.
Did we actually sign Baheng? I wasn’t aware anything had been released to confirm. What happened about that Yank we “signed” too?

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:33

michael - the deal has been done for Baheng and will be executed in early January - that’s our understanding.

  • 5 Ed Harrison // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:34

michael - i assume most of these youngsters Newcastle get will be good enough to go straight into the first team squad. Also Emanuelson is already 21.

He would be a good target for us. But isn’t it a bit early to start the transfer rumours again.

I would be very happy if Edmilson joins us in January.

emmanuelson is a brilliant player, very lik drenthe of real madrid (not bcos of his looks obviously). would be a brilliant signing but he would cost in around 6/7mill i reckon

I think the Krol story might be a load of poo. Emanuelson looks a better bet to compete with Enrique. Remember we’re also signing Danny Szetela for RB in January too. So we’ll have good compo for places for both full back positions. We do need another Right Winger though, and I think we’d be very strong for next season with that squad.

  • 9 Kash // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:43

And lets not forget Edmilson who’ll slot in for Defensive Midfield. I’m starting to think that maybe Ameobi and Butt maybe coming to the end of there Toon lives. Carr and Baba are defenites to leave!!!!

  • 10 malaysian geordie // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:52

ameobi, carr and babayaro could leave the club… we should keep butt for atleast another season… the lad has a tremendous attitute, could help the youngsters

  • 11 Bob // Oct 19, 2007 at 16:55

Urby Emanuelson is a fantastic player, I’d be surprised if we could get him to be honest.

I think he would slot straight into the first team.

  • 12 Tez // Oct 19, 2007 at 17:42

Bob - Do you think he is better than Enrique? To be honest I have not see the lad play much.

Would be great to have 2 young talented LB’s with loads of potential rather than just having one average injury prone one (Babayaro)

  • 13 James // Oct 19, 2007 at 17:44

Danny Szetela is not a RB he is a midfielder and i hope we sign him

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Oct 19, 2007 at 18:16

Was about to say hes not a RB and he’s already moved this summer to Racing Santander rejecting us and Roma.

  • 15 Bob // Oct 19, 2007 at 18:25

tez - I would say so. Although, to be fair, we haven’t seen much of Enrique yet.

Barca were reputed to be after Emanuelson in the summer and he is pretty highly rated - Ajax academy’s Talent of the Year 2006 and he was a member of the Dutch squad that won the UEFA U-21 Championship in 2006 and was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament as a left back…. it would be great if Sam could attract him to Newcastle.

  • 16 ToonKing // Oct 19, 2007 at 18:32

The kid looks looks great on paper, but i watched him in the national team lately, and he’s pretty short, weak and to attacking for my liking, i think he might get hammered in the EPL, i would rather have the polish guy.

  • 17 Bob // Oct 19, 2007 at 18:38

Really? I thought he looked very good against Slovenia, skillful and with a bit of pace. He is pretty attacking minded as you say but I think it’s good to have fullbacks who can bomb up the wing and add to the attack.

  • 18 Tom_Toon // Oct 19, 2007 at 18:53

we have N’zogbia for that, id like to see him attack as much as possible.

  • 19 Greg B // Oct 19, 2007 at 20:55

Emanuelson is a very good left back for his age but I agree with a couple of people who have already stated that he may struggle in the Prem. Saying that young Dutch players tend to adapt very well, Van Persie a prime example.
I would prefer his team mate though, Johnny Heitinga, a solid right back, defensive midfielder and an accomplished international for Holland.

  • 20 leo // Oct 19, 2007 at 21:24

i heard that we were looking at heitinga, how strange someone would say that they would prefer him, i think get krol and urby and at least there is competition for lb and lm respectively. and urby could play both… who are we going to get as a right back

    also how good is heitinga?

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Oct 19, 2007 at 21:28

To good for back up :)

    His prefered position is CB.

  • 22 Tom_Toon // Oct 19, 2007 at 22:05

Tiendalli could be good back up and still fairly young so he can learn from Beye.

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Oct 19, 2007 at 22:06

@Bob, Tiendalli was named as the RB :)

  • 24 nightfall // Oct 19, 2007 at 22:18

bob - everyone can play well against slovenia :)
well…the fact is they suck…weather i like it or not…

    (p.s. i’m a slovenian)

  • 25 d // Oct 20, 2007 at 4:59

he may prefer Roma than us if Roma makes offer for him!

  • 26 exi // Oct 20, 2007 at 6:32

He will not come to newcastle, fact.

    Why? Luque is his teammate.

  • 27 Bob // Oct 20, 2007 at 9:01

    Nightfall: Haha :)

Fair enough. I see that a lot of people don’t rate him that much but in my opinion he would be an excellent signing. Heitinga would be a great signing as well.

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Oct 20, 2007 at 18:52

I think a definite signing for january will be

    RW - Darijo Srna

& i think we also need a young RB (Tiendalli), an experienced LB (?) and possibly a playmaker (?)

  • 29 ToonKing // Oct 20, 2007 at 23:46

Darijo Srna is the shizzle, would love him. :)
