There is some talk that before the start of the season Newcastle may go after a big name signing which in the local media is said to “stun the soccer worldâ€.
That would not surprise us as Sam Allardyce has been building the squad with good players brought in at very reasonable prices.
Let’s take a look at what this story’s about.
Mike Ashley
A source close to owner Mike Ashley admitted that, while Newcastle’s haul of four signings so far this summer is impressive, there will be more to come. And that will possibly include the arrival of a big-name player that will stun the soccer world.
Mike Ashley and his senior executive in charge at Newcastle – Chris Mort – will never go public on how much they have to spend in the transfer market because it makes no sense from a business point of view. But a look at Ashley’s successful businesses makes you realize fairly quickly that the new United owner thinks big. To be big you have to first think or imagine where you want to be.
The source told the Evening Chronicle:
“When you look at the incoming and outgoing transfers so far this summer, Mike has only really spent £1.5M because Geremi and Mark Viduka came in on free transfers and Joey Barton and David Rozehnal’s arrivals have been helped by Scott Parker’s £7M sale to West Ham, so from a business point of view, that’s good business.“We know that Big Sam would like two left-backs and a center-half too, and he will listen to any other possible signings that the manager would like.
“The transfer deadline is not until the end of August and the feeling here is United could be about to pull out all the shots to land a big one.â€
Of course the very interesting question is which player would they bring in? Not sure bringing anybody to Newcastle right now would “stun the soccer worldâ€. One player we think is a world class player in the making and did wonders at West Ham last season is Carlos Tevez. He would be great at Newcastle but we already have two small forwards in Owen and Martins – so he might not fit in too easily.
But that’s the question – which world class name could Sam bring to Newcastle that would truly be worth the money and assist Newcastle in becoming great again?
Comments and thoughts – and choices – very welcome.

Comment #3We already have a massive signing in Mark Viduka. Nah seriously we won’tsign a world class player in his prime because we are not in Europe. We could possibly get Huntelaar but unlikely.

Comment #10I don’t mind the thought of Newcastle making big name signings, but don’t start blowing cash for the sake of it, and don’t be held to ransom just because we have cash on the hip for the first time since Gullit. We know the area’s we need to streghten in (DEFENCE) so let that big name signing be someone in that area for a change were we really need it. I can’t say who to bring in but to suggestions are, Miguel at Right back and wantaway centrel defender Curtis Davies. They are two of many but i’m sure Sam Know’s what he’s doing.

Comment #16Generally “massive signings” are either strikers or midfielders and I dont think there is much more room for anymore. Possibly 1 more striker (I would let Martins go) and 1 more midfielder, but the emphasis must now be on top class full backs. Carr, Babayaro and Ramage are simply not good enough. Big Sam has made a huge difference already and the squad already looks much stronger. A top 5 or 6 spot this season will allow us to progress even further next season and hopefully compete for silverware

Comment #17How about ronaldiniho, Barca have eto’o, henry, messi, deco and gujohnsen so its obvious they all won’t play at the same time. the big toothed brazillian has expressed an interest in playing in the premier league so why not make a cheeky bid!!

Comment #19i think sum of tha players that are being mentioned are unrealistic targets, especially with not being in the champions league. i think our obvisous choice should be curtis davies, ashey cole, is worth a cheeky bid too, we def need a quality defender at tha back, who will do th job for us.

Comment #24Our squad is looking stronger but there is still some vulnerabilities at the back.
I think we need two more CB, 2 LB and a RB if not too so there’s some competition and also the bigger the squad the more progressive we will be next year. If we were to buy a BIG player I would expect it to be a Defensive Midfielder or a Defender.

Comment #26i don’t think terry’s avalible…he is the best defender, along with vidic and nesta..those are the names we can only dream of…for now… but we can still get very good players, such as coloccini, appiah,… i’m disapointed we didn’t made a bid for ribery…he’s a fighter with talent…
what do you all think of ricardo gardner as LB? and what about j.baptista as DMC?

Comment #27Big problem is, what world class player would want to come to a team that finished 13th last season and no European competition this season? We’d have to finish in the top 4 this season to have any chance in attracting the likes of Eto’o, Nesta or Deco. Perhaps Gujohnsen is as close as we’d get to a big name signing right now. Personally, I’d love to see Zidan talked out of retirement and playing for the toon (…well, he’s familiar with black & white stripes, i.e. Juventus).

Comment #29A stunning signing would be a top midfielder or striker who makes our current crop of largely excellent midfielders and strikers look a bit workaday. I think everyone takes it for granted Big Sam is going to strengthen the defence. He has already done so. The only existing defender he was keen on was Taylor and I think there will be a perfectly adequate defence built around him. There will at least be one good Geordie in the team. But a stunning signing … I honestly think Big Sam will go for Crouch, because he likes big chaps.

Comment #31LEt’s just hope that the players who come to us, will give all they have to make us a top 6 team next season. First we need to progress in the table and after that we can dream about making one or even two big name signings. I think you have to be optimistic in this case. First thing to do is continuing by building a solid and good defence!!
Does anybody know how the situation on HABIB BEYE is at the moment? Cause 2 days ago it seemed to be very close and after that I didn’t hear anything else about it.

Comment #36HAHAHAHA ! Why not Kaka, Totti, Terry AND Et’o. COMMON MAN, be serious. It would be difficult for Man utd and Chelsea to pull some of them. Be realistic with this BIG signing malarky. Seriously though, if we sign any big name players, they would need to be young and at a smaller club than newcastle regardless of how good they are. Jaquin, David Villa, Huntelaar, Berbatov, Lennon, Riquelme, Kompany, Collocini, Alves, etc
