Norwich City have just signed Newcastle United midfielder Matthew Pattison, on loan until the end of the year – about 6 weeks.
The South African born 21-year-old has been with Newcastle since joining the Newcastle academy in 2003 at the age of 17.
The loan deal will end on January 1, with Pattison’s current contract at Newcastle due to expire in the summer.
Matty Pattison – on loan to Norwich until end of the year
When Glenn Roeder took over as Newcastle’s Academy manager in the summer of 2005 there were a number of excellent youngsters as part of the Academy at that time, and the team reached the semi finals of the FA Youth Cup in both 2006 and 2007. Pattison was acknowledged at that time as the Academy’s best young player. Roeder used him several times in the first team when he became manager at Newcastle in February of last year, and Matty looked good.
However Matty has lost his way a little bit under Big Sam and first team chances have been few and far between.
Pattison has made 15 appearances for Newcastle since he was handed his debut by Roeder against Everton in February 2006. His last appearance for Newcastle’s first-team came against Watford on the last day of last season. Matty has been on the bench a couple of times this season but with the infusion of midfield talent such as Barton and Faye, his chances at Newcastle look limited.
He becomes Roeder’s second loan signing since taking charge of Norwich a short two weeks ago, and the Glenn told the club’s official website:
“He’s a tough lad, the right sort for where we are now. He doesn’t know how to lose.â€
This is a good signing for Roeder, who thinks very highly of Matty. If Matty fulfills his promise at Norwich he could either be signed in January for a small fee, or picked up for nothing once his contract expires in June. We don’t think Sam will want to extend his contract at Newcastle, since there are growing rumors that Sam is after Russia’s versatile captain Andrei Arshavin and Villarreal’s Juan Román Riquelme, both attacking midfielders.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1saw that comming a mile off , but who’s this benefiting? not the toon , its not like were sending him out for experience so he can come back and challenge a first team squad , we should have agreed a loan with intent to buy at the end of season .

Comment #2Totally agree Hadrian, pointless decision for us, his contract is up , he wont get kept on and he will be able to leave for free when we could have at least got £500k for him

Comment #3A good move; win-win for Newcastle and Norwich.
Its purpose; to give young Pattison first team Chamionship exposure by placing him in shop window for others to observe. If he plays well, expect him to be picked up by Norwich or any other Championship side…….

Comment #4Well he will be a free transfer at the end of season. Roeder probably gave Sam a quick call and he agreed, good move for Pattison as he was never going to get in the first team.

Comment #5He won’t go for free. Due to his age and the fact he came through our academy, unless we actually release him as a free agent we’ll be due compensation from whomever picks him up.

Comment #8Why is it that our brilliant young promising players hit a certain age and become average or useless players. It doesnt seem to happen at other clubs.
Or am I being over critical or paranoid.
