Good news released this afternoon that our young and ever improving center back Steven Taylor has been called up for the England B squad to play to play Albania at Burnley’s Turf Moor ground on 25 May.
He joins Michael Owen -who was already in the squad for the game.
Steven Taylor
Steven Taylor is one of the successes of our sparkling youth system and he signed for Newcastle – under some fanfare – when he was just 17 when at Monkseaton High School.
Although born in Greenwich, Steven moved to Whitley Bay when he was 2 weeks old and was a ball-boy during the Kevin Keegan days.
He went to Valley Gardens Middle School with future Newcastle team-mate Peter Ramage – and then continued his education at Monkseaton High School.
Steven turned 21 last January – and has made 85 appearances for Newcastle to date – with 81 starts and 4 goals.
He has appeared for the England under 21 team a total of 14 times and scored 3 goals.
To say he is a star of the future is an understatement – and we expect Taylor to play for the full England side and eventually captain Newcastle.
We would expect James Milner to follow in his footsteps – into the full England set-up in the not too distant future.
Both James and Steven expect to be in the England under 21 squad that plays in the European Under 21 tournament in Holland this summer.
The other center backs in the party include Michael Dawson, Joleon Lescott, Nicky Shorey, David Bentley and Phil Jagielka – but it would not surprise us if Michael forces his way into the starting line up.
This morning Steven talked about wanting a new contract at Newcastle – Major Newcastle News Stories – 18th May 2007 – Taylor Unhappy? – and that he doesn’t want to be messed around.
That suggests to us that Shepherd and Allardyce need to get him signed up to that new improved contract – and quickly.

Comment #1i am not in the least bit worried that steven taylor will leave. the man is pure black and white and its not even a concern. he just wants an improved contract as i am sure that even th0ugh he is one of best player, his wages are probalby a long way behind at this time.

Comment #2oh yeah, on a totally different note: i see there is yet another american tycoon looking at inversting in the prem. this bloke is called ‘will chang’ and owns dc united. who will he be going for i wonder. the most appealing club that is still up for grabs has to be us.

Comment #3Craig – I wish we could have gone the other way – and bought one of the MLS teams – like DC United – put them in black and white stripes and use them as a feeder club. There’s a lot more Americans interested in real football (as contrasted to the American version) and some good youngsters coming through.

Comment #4Don’t think Taylor will leave – too much black and white blood in him – but he deserves an improved contract – no doubt.
