Who Should Newcastle Play Against West Ham

September 19th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 87 Comments

After the diabolical performance on Monday night it’s going to be interesting to see what team Big Sam picks for our next game against West Ham United on Sunday.

The game kicks off at 1:30pm at St. James’ Park.

A win on Sunday and we can think of the game against Derby as a blip - but anything less than that and we’re probably not as good as some of us had thought - so it’s a key game for Newcastle.

sam-allardyce-2.JPG

Sam Allardyce - needs team to give a spirited and winning performance Sunday

We think Harper will retain his position in goal but since this is the first of 3 games in 6 days we expect Shay to be back on Tuesday evening, for our game at the Emirates against Arsenal, in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup.

As far as the back four goes we really think we need to have Charles N’Zogbia further upfield so we can use some of his creativity and skill. We’d like to put Enrique in at left back if he’s recovered from his slight hamstring strain. If not then we’d switch Steven Taylor over to left back because we think we have to start playing Beye at right-back. He was only on for 15 minutes on Monday night but he’s an experienced right-back used to playing in the European Champions League for Marseilles so we think he will be ready.

We need more creativity in central midfield bu again Emre is out injured so we’re not sure if he’ll be available – probably not otherwise we would have played Butt and Emre in midfield. Butt and Geremi are too alike and neither of them is very creative.

The middle 4 in a 4-4-2 formation could be Milner Smith Butt and N’Zogbia and you could also change N’Zogbia and Smith around. Up front we’d start Owen, and if Viduka is fit we’d start Mark up front with him. We did seem to miss Viduka on Monday night with his good hold up play and Ameobi just didn’t get the job done. We’d only see Shola start if Sam has sat down with him and told him his chances are running out and not only has he to start playing better in holding up the play – but a goal or two would also be nice.

Other alternatives here would be Alan Smith up front and of course starting Owen and Martins up front together. But since Sam goes for the big guys we’re not sure he’d ever start the two small strikers up front together, as they do play a similar game.

So here’s the team we’d like to see and it depends on who’s available – this assumes the worst case scenario that Viduka, Enrique and Emre are not available. If either of them is available we’d include them as discussed above.

Harper

Beye Cacapa Rozehnal Taylor

Milner Butt Smith N’Zogbia

Ameobi Owen

As we mentioned we’d only start Shola once Sam has let him know his chances at Newcastle are not infinite and he has to shape up – and a couple of goals would be nice. With Emre and Viduka out, Sam’s flexibility in team selection is somewhat limited. We think it’s time to change the team around a bit – what do you think?

Let us know here and we also have a long running analysis piece on the West Ham game on our Newcastle United Blog.

Your ideas and comments are appreciated.

Which player will have the biggest impact. I think mark viduka will play a large part in the games coming up. I think that he should play in a CF position. The think the team should look like this against arsenal.

    Given

    Beye Taylor Rozzy zoggy

    Milner Smith Geremi

    Viduka

    Owen Martins

And when barton and duff come back i think the first team should be.

    Given
Beye taylor Rozzy Zoggy or “the bull”

    Milner Barton Duff

    Viduka
    Owen Martins

If Beye is not fit Geremi should move back there

    ……………Given
    Beye….Taylor…..Roz…….Enrique
    Milner…..Geremi………Zogbia
    …………Smith………..
    Martins……..Owen

Bench Harper, Viduka, Butt, Capaca, ?

  • 3 TimT // Sep 19, 2007 at 9:57

I realy do hope we get a win on sunday to get the momentum back. T o be creative in attack with are current sqaud we must play the wingers (N’Zogbia/Milner) and not play Butt/Geremi together as we create bare to nothing without the above. what about Viduka (when fit, or Smith) as attacking midfielder, N’zogbia on left wing and Milner on right wing, Butt or Geremi in the defensive midfield role in front of the back 4, that would be an aggessive yet defensiveless solid midfield. With that Martins and Owen could play of the big attacking midfielder (ie Viduka or Smith) and use Amiobi as a sub if needed? The back 4 is not a problem because great defenders can play in any position alone the back row, and we have some great defenders, so play the defence of “Beye Cacapa Rozehnal Taylor” then put Enrique in when fit, then Taylor is available to play the other positions in case of injury or tiredness, dont you think?

What do you think? thats my ideal set up

  • 7 Jammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:01

You talk of Habib Beye playing in the Champions League every season with Marseille, yet Marseille haven’t featured in the Champions League since 2003. Think you are making too many assumptions in the articles, which is a shame, as they are usually a good read.

  • 8 Jammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:06

And after getting my rant out of the way, my ideal first 11 when all fit would be.

    Given

    Beye Rozenhal Cacapa Enrique

    Milner Barton Butt N’Zogbia

    Owen Viduka

Strong bench of Harper, Taylor, Emre, Duff, Martins

I think Alan Smith brings nothing to the team apart from guaranteed yellow cards.

My team for West Ham: Based on no Viduka, Enrique, Emre being fit.

    Given
    Beye Cacapa Taylor Rozenthal

    Milner Geremi Smith N’Zogbia

Owen Martins Subs: Harper,Faye, Ameobi, Butt, Troisi

  • 10 Hammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:09

I hope we play with Martins and Owen up front as I think we’ll be shelling long balls in if either Duke or Shola Omygod plays…….it is pointless playing long high balls in this league, any decent centre half will nod them out all day.
    C’mon Sam…..surprise us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 11 Rich // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:10

With everyone fit the team i would play:
    Given
    Beye Cacapa Rozenthal Enrique

    Milner Barton Emre N’Zogbia

Owen Martins SUBS: Harper,Taylor,Duff, Geremi, Viduka

  • 12 Hammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:13

Looks good Rich……if Emre is in the right frame of mind.

  • 13 valle // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:15

I honestly cant beleive how many ppl gives tayls are cb position after his horror show against derby and after the strong play of both roz and cacapa this season… Well here is my pick

    Given

    Beye Roz Cacapa Enrique

    Milner Geremi Butt Zog

    Viduka Owen

When all is fit, change Butt for Barton and Zog for Duff

  • 14 Hammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:17

Valle….I’d drop Tayls…this guy needs a reality check

  • 15 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:19

Whatever team we play, Ameobi must be kept as far away from the starting XI as possible.

You’re not mates with Darren are you Hammy? ;)

  • 21 Cyprus Mag // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:56

I can’t understand the anti Shola brigade. Ok he didn’t produce against Derby but who did? and how many chances has he had since he came back from his operation? Doesn’t anyone remember how well he played carrying a serious injury ,scoring goals which got Roeder the job.
Why is it that local players rarely get the chance to settle in whereas costly imports can play weeks without delivering, viz Geremi?

  • 22 Hammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 10:57

    Toon Chicken..
Couldn’t possibly divulge my sources my friend…..

  • 23 maggpie // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:03

Sam can talk to Ameobi till the cows, pigs, sheep and goats come home but he’ll still be useless. Glad to see most don’t even have him in the sixteen. I wouldn’t even have him in the 16 with our current injuries.
The only reason to keep him involved is so we can get some money for him in January, but we’ll be lucky to get anything.

  • 24 maggpie // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:06

Cyprus Mag - I like many have been watching Ameobi for about six years now. he wasn’t just crap against Derby, he’s always crap. One goal every 5 games tells the story. Sure there’s been the odd half decent game, but if you give anybody 230 run outs you’ll eventually get a performance.
    He’s rubbish - sell him!

  • 25 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:17

I used to fight Ameobi’s corner against all comers. I remember some extremely good performances for England U21’s - he once did a Cruyff turn against the Dutch before laying it on a plate for his strike partner to score - unbelievable but true.
The thing is he’s almost 26 now, has played well over 200 times for the Toon and only scores once every 5 or 6 games, and contributes next to nothing by way of assists. Yes he’s had injuries, but so has everyone else. The sad fact is that he has made no progress at all since those U21 days - if anything he’s gone downhill.
Come in Shola Ameobi, your time at the Toon is well and truly up!

  • 26 ToonKing // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:25

@Ed : “Emre and Geremi are too alike and neither of them is very creative.” , come on mate, Geremi has no crativity and they are nothing alike.

I would love it if Emre featured agaist the hammers.

    My lineup :
    …………..Given……………
    Beye..Rozy..Cacapa..Geremi

    Milner..Geremi..Emre..Zog

    ……..Owen……Smith……..

  • 27 yemozone // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:39

Why did big sam buy Alan smith when we needed someone to replace dyer?

    my first 11 is

    beye cacapa rozzy enrique

    faye
    geremi barton milner

    viduka
    owen martins

  • 28 maggpie // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:40

Just looked up Ameobi’s stats and if you look at league games only they are even worse. He’s scored 28 goals in 166 league appearances. That’s one goal every six games and on that basis if he played all 38 league games in a season he’d end up with 6 goals.
    Not good enough.

  • 29 Dave // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:45

    Given

    Beye - Cacapa - Rozenhal - Enrique

    Milner - Barton - N’Zogbia

    Martins - Viduka - Owen

Subs: Harper, Ameobi, Butt, Taylor, Faye, Duff

  • 30 Hammy // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:45

    Toonking…we got two Geremi’s???????

  • 31 yemozone // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:49

I dont believe taylor is suppose to be in the the first 11 ,when we have players like rozzy & cacapa fit…………I also hope big sam will quickly replace harper with given

  • 32 Mick G // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:53

Toon King I know Geremi likes to do every thing, ie. take corners(badly) freekicks,(just as bad), throw ins etc., but now you have him playing in two positions, blimey NUFC don’t half work their captains hard.

  • 33 Canadian Mag // Sep 19, 2007 at 11:57

I watched the game on Monday night and Ameobi was shit as was most of the other players, with that said it just wasn’t there night. Zog must have had his trainers on, as he couldn’t stand up. And I’m a huge fan of Zog, not to mention the terrible service. Smith was also useless and I do not rate him. With that said my starting 11 would be:

    Given

    Beye, Cacapa, Roz, Geremi

    Milner, Butt, Zog

    Martins, Viduka, Owen

  • 34 Ace // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:00

    Harper

    Beye Rozzy Cacapa Zoggy

    Milner Butt Emre

    Owen Martins

Subs Given Viduka Taylor Geremi The Bull

Let Shola watch a few games from the stands!!!

  • 35 Ryan // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:05

Im sorry but i have to scratch my head everytime i see someone opy for Butt instead of Geremi as our holding midfielder. He’s past it and although he plays with his heart thats about all he offers. Martins must start, hes the type of player that when u give confidence to performs and i havent forgotten his debut goal came against the hammers and im sure he’d score against them again if given the chance.

  • 36 Ed Harrison // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:13

ToonKing - that was my error - I meant Butt and Geremi are too alike - changed it - my mind is on the wane :D
Emre is very creative - pity he’s injured right now

  • 37 Pete // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:14

    Heres my line up
    Stephen Hawkins
Po , Laa Laa , Dipsy , Tinky Winky
    Huey , Luey , Duey
    Zig & Zag.
    (Bunch of Losers)

  • 38 Ed Harrison // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:14

My point was we’ll have to play one or the other (Butt or Geremi) in central midfield but never the two together. We also have Faye as a possible central midfielder but he’s defensive minded too.

  • 39 Roadhog // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:22

I would save the Duke and Enrique for Tuesday if there is any doubt of the m being unfit for Sundays match.

If Sam wants to stick with 4-3-3 I would go with the following

    …………… Harper……………..
    Beye…Cacapa…Roz…Taylor

    ……Milner….Geremi….Zog…

    …..Martins..Smith…Owen…..

But my much preferred formation of 4-4-2 I would drop Smith back to midfield and give the Martins-Owen partnership a try. If Martins can drag defenders with his pace it should leave space for Owen to get in and score or vice-versa.

    Tuesday Night I would play

    …………… Given……………..
    Beye…Cacapa…Roz…Enrique

    ..Milner…Geremi.. Smith…Zog

    …..Martins….. Viduka…..

I would rest owen, he didn’t look ‘match fit’ on Monday night and could do with a break. Plus I wouldn’t mind martins showing wenger what he has missed out on!

  • 40 Joe // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:39

Team against West Ham, Presuming Viduka isn’t fit for sundays game:

    Given

    Beye Rozehnal Taylor Enrique

    Milner Butt Emre N’zogbia

    Martins Smith

  • 41 ToonPipes // Sep 19, 2007 at 12:56

Ameobi can get lost .. hes not up to it … BUT its down to BSA job to get shot of him and get a replacement .. In long term, lets hope Andy Carroll can replace him HOWEVER, short term, why the h ell is Smith not playing up there … hes a better CF than Midfielder and hes more mobile than Viduka (tho granted not with the ball skills) ……. AND ditch Nicky Butt hes too slow and trys to things he doesnt have the skill for … heres mine:

Given (sorry hes better than Harper and more imposing)

    Beye Roz Cacapa Enrique

    Milner Geremi Faye Zog

    Smith Owen/Martins

  • 42 John // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:02

    Roz
    Cacacpa
    Enrique

    Milner
    Faye

    Martins
    Owen

That team would beat anyone on there day

  • 43 yemozone // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:04

geremi is not a defensive midfielder like nicky butt…he plays central midfield.Remember when he was in boro.

  • 44 John // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:07

thats the point off Faye playing next to him. Hes a quality defensive midfielder

  • 45 ToonPipes // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:07

John, im wit you …. lets hope BSA makes same call .. monday night has put me on a downer !

  • 46 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:07

toonpipes - seems like a pretty solid team. I’d maybe start with Owen and Martins up front and have Smudger linking the play between midfield and attack in place of the more defensive Faye.
Sounds like Enrique is still struggling though. A few people have suggested playing Taylor at LB, but this harks back to the old square pegs/round holes regime of Souness et al.
How about this as an alternative formation…

    Given
    Rozenhal, Cacapa, Taylor (back 3)
    N’Zogbia, Milner (wingbacks)
    Faye (holding midfielder)
    Geremi, Smith
    Owen, Martins

  • 47 John // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:08

i would like to see it, but i have a feeling he might still play ameobi if viduka is injured

  • 48 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:09

got me left side and right side mixed up there, but you get the idea

  • 49 John // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:15

that looks prity good , but being honest i would’nt try it out on west ham , but probably use it against a weaker side to see would it work..

  • 50 ToonPipes // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:17

Toon Chicken .. surely your suggestion of Smith ‘linking’ play is sticking square heads up round holes ?? .. he is best upfront AND as a target man .. using his patented ‘’smudger-agression” (TM all rights reserved) to win balls leaving the finishing to others .. Left back is a problemo .. we have to get Beye playing .. and i really want to play 442 .. and so does BSA which is why Smith keeps playing left side midfield .. so:

    Given

    Beye Roz Cacp Zog

    Milner Geremi Faye Martins

    Smith Owen

Faye has got to track back on the left.

HOW D’YA LIKE DEM APPLES ?

  • 51 John // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:20

i like … Could easily turn into a 4-3-3 if need be also …Just depends how hard Martins will work for the team on the left .

  • 52 John // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:22

Does anyone know when exactly Barton is going to be back. We could os do with someone like him at the moment.

Last season he was awsome. Man City would off ben relegated if it was’nt for him. It was a complete one man team and now we have him and he has got quality players round him also which he never had..

  • 53 yemozone // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:36

I also agree with joe’s selection……martins should come b/4 owen

  • 54 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:39

toonpipes - Martins on the left could destroy the shape of the team, leaving huge gaps for the ammers to exploit.
The kid (Oba) still hasn’t learn what to do when he’s playing up front - divint want to confuse him unnecessarily by playing him outa position.
I do like the idea of Smith and Owen - think they combined quite well for England.
That said, I don’t think Fergie is as daft as he looks, so don’t see that Smudge would be such a square peg in the attacking mid hole.

  • 55 Ed Harrison // Sep 19, 2007 at 13:53

John - over the weekend Sam said it would still be 3-4 weeks before Barton was back playing - he’s started light training a week ago. They were saying 22nd Oct against Tottenham at home - was likely return game.

  • 56 ToonPipes // Sep 19, 2007 at 14:13

Toon Chicken .. to be honest, as John alluded to, the players pick could easily switch to 433 if needed, which worked at Bolton .. therefore if anything, by detailing Martins to work back, we would have even more cover down the left to assist with defensive duties - and in anycase according to BSA Faye has defending pretty much detailed in his DNA so i expect superhuman perfomances from him .. so we have cover at the back whilst also giving us more attacking options, which will be needed at home … i want us to win this next game and win well .. we need owen and martins on the field …. knah wot i mean

  • 57 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 14:26

Aye, i’m with on the Owen/Martins issue. But I don’t think we can expect Martins to play out of position - his positional sense is the weakest aspect of his game at present.
Hoping and praying he starts with Owen and Martins - even if Viduka is fit.
I’d take Owen and Smith, also.
Maybe Ameobi could fill the problem left back slot?

  • 58 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 14:27

Left back in Jesmond that is!!!

    Waah!

  • 59 stjames // Sep 19, 2007 at 14:57

After mondays performance Sam has a chance to change the team. In doing so I would address 1) that we lost most headers , 2) the poor passing and 3) the nonexistant right wing play.

    1) Tayls seems to be our best header so he’s in.
    2) Much of the poor passing starts with Geremis longballs so I will give him a rest and in comes Nobby, our best and most creative passer.
    3) Nobby will of course solve our right wing probleme too.

    The team.

    Harper or Given
    Beye, Rozy, Tayls, Zogs
    Solano, Smithy, Faye, Milner
    Martins, Owen

Subs: Geremi, Shola, Cacapa, Butt, Harper or Given

  • 69 JackKnife // Sep 19, 2007 at 16:00

@Toonpipes, Ameobi is not to blame. come on now. as it has widely being stated we lack creativity and no desire to win that game on monday. simple and Martinez & Owen is how it should be up front.

  • 70 ToonPipes // Sep 19, 2007 at 16:04

No … tbh, it was a cheap response to our new friend ‘yemozone’ (writting above) …………………… you might be right, it was an all round poor performance BUT i in partic Ameobi and Butt were both cack .. I would rather have Faye instead of Butt and i would rather Ameobi never played for us again .. as i have stated above, i would rather play Martins on the wing with Smith/Owen upfront than have either of Butt/Ameobi meandering around the pitch - Ameobi with every ball played up to hm bouncing away harmlessly for an oposition throw in and Butt trying to skin the oposition when he has NO pace … baaaahumbug

Martinez does’nt play well on flanks look at previous games he’s lost when he gets the ball in the middle and run at the defenders that’s where he’s most dangerous….just look at when he came on (monday) that nice thru ball from milner on the edge of the 18 he turn inside and they had to foul him.. that’s how he score 11 goals FOR US LAST SEASON.

  • 72 JackKnife // Sep 19, 2007 at 16:12

lol, lol i agree, Ameobi & But were both worthless , (Ameobi should still be playing for the reservse or be sold he’s not able for it anymore, BUTT, has experience but he’s not a consistent player. which is what we need from him.

  • 73 Toon Chicken // Sep 19, 2007 at 16:17

JackKnife - is this some sort of in-joke that i’m just not getting???

    His name is Obafemi MARTINS!!!

  • 74 Rich // Sep 19, 2007 at 16:41

Great idea - Fredrik, why would you have Martins on the right wing? Hes left footed! sure he could cut inside but thatd be the worst position ever for him, him and owen up front all the way no doubts!!

I agree with u guys.newcastle is abig club and we are suppose be competing for a champions league place,to do that we have to get rid of players like Ameobi, Butt & Babayaro.Thank big sam for saving us from BRAMBLE.

I like it. Our current CM are not cutting it so lets try a few things out before Barton and Emre get fit. Maybe play Triosi on the wing and give Owen a break. Me thinks Zogs and Geremi could make a decent pairing in the center. You have to be willing to work for each other and from what I’ve heard those two get on great.

Also nice to see a few of you putting Triosi on the bench. I think this guy can make the cut and surely must be better than Matty Patty.

    given

    beye cacapa rozehnal enrique

    milner geremi faye nzogbia

    martins smith

smith is useless in rmf and we have players like faye who are better cmf than smith sp why play him there ?
at least upfront he can do the closing down etc oba doesnt do and he has the height/strength to hold the ball up, which is what man utd used him for mainly allowing their mf talent to run in behind onto smiths flicks/headers.

viduka doesnt win enough in the air for me, hes a target man but doest have the legs to get up and compete with good ch in the air as villa showed at st james. i cant see sam giving the long ball up tottally so that why smiths gets in a head of him in my team.

we will need owen/viduka more for arsenal so theres no sense risking them and if owen does have a hernia problem no matter what sam says it is a huge risk playing him vs whu with his injury record.

i put shay back in even though harper has done well becuase shay is more often than not always our best players vs arseanl and we need to see vs whu if hes 100% ready or at least give him a game to get near that.

Based on Roz and Enrique being injured, my team for Sunday is:

    Given
    Beye-Cacapa-Faye-Taylor
    Milner-Smith-Butt-Zog
    Viduka-Owen

Subs: Harper; Gerami; Martins; Ameobi; Pattison/Edgar

We need Barton, Duff, Roz, Enrique and Emre back asap to give us more strength in depth and some creativity in the middle of the park…..

  • 84 Simen // Sep 19, 2007 at 20:59

    Given

    Beye - Taylor - Roz - Enrique

    Milner - Geremi - Smith - N’Zogbia

    Owen - Martins

Sorry about Solano you guys. Guess I miss him so much. Like the man said, it’s not so much that I’m getting forgetful as that I know so much to forget. Major bummer though, - wasn’t it. :(

  • 86 Geno Toon // Sep 20, 2007 at 1:25

Given ( agree with the best keeper in the world comment)

    Beye Rozenhal Cacacpa Enrique
    milner faye geremi nzog
    martin smith

bench- owen, taylor, viduka, butt, harper

why not try oba and smith together and have geremi or faye hold the middle down and the wings make the runs they do? It really pains me to not see Given start… have
